For anyone interested in my mindset for this solo, my priority was to focus on rhythmic melodies the entire time, and to avoid falling back into my tired personal chops that tend to come out when I get anxious or feel like I need to do something "impressive." I am attempting to play an engaging solo where the melodic content *is enough*. For what it's worth, I considered it a personal success on this front. I was happy not to jump ship from the goal. I'll be teaching a new course on JPBouvetMethod.com in 2024 on how to use paradiddles and doubles to play unfolding melodies on the kit. You can hear some of this type of stuff with the cross stick and snare-focused material in this solo. Stay tuned.
looking forward to it JP! your 16 invisible rhythms course has completed blown the doors off my playing recently, been a member for a year now and that one has really stuck with me. Sounds like 2024 is gonna be the year of the paradiddle!
dude I've always enjoyed your playing but this was a cut above. then when I read this comment it really made sense. This type of melodic creation is so staggering, not once in this entire journey did u loose the groove and the tension was amazing. I was enthralled from start to finish. Such restraint..... big lesson learned here today for me. Thank you.
Amazing solo that showed discipline and great melodic structure! You're have been one of my favorite drummers for quite some time. Thanks for all the years of great content!
I’m taking your courses , beginner/intermediate level. Having hard time to understand 2 and 4 melodies. I think this stuff is the best ever I came across. I’m starting to understand little by little. So far I don’t get it with up and downs content.
I'm a little older than you. 42 and a drum teacher, This was an amazing solo! I did just hear an amazing drummer but an amazing musician. I'm so glad you didn't start doing a bunch of gospel chops machine gun chops the whole time. Don't get me wrong, we all love to button mash on the set sometimes. But dynamics, varying your speed and applying rudiments patterns and flams will always trump an abundance of licks. This was amazing!!!!
JP I've been following you for a long time and your development is amazing and its visible what you are trying to achieve in long term. You are a very fresh and unique musician amongst the drummers here on youtube. Keep doing what youre doing!
I love your playing because it actually tells a story. I think I described Matt's (Halpern) style like that as well. When you can take the viewer on an adventure just with a kit, then you're doing it right. Loved it!
Jp, you have been such an inspiration for me. I really like how you approach the creativity on the drums it’s something different unlike the usual chops that I see around (which with due respect they kind of sound the same) I’ve been following you since I watched your participation on guitar center. BTW What’s that ride?
Sounding amazing as usual JP. I hear and see your teachings in your playing. Very inspiring. Those drums sounds so good. Nice sound mixing. Is that the Jazz or collectors series? Peace brother ✌️
Thanks so much Eddie. Indeed, I am always trying to reverse-engineer my playing into courses, and then making the courses injects new ideas into my playing. The loop has become really wonderful. I believe this was a Collectors but I play a Jazz Series at home.
Always love your dynamic range JP ! Is there really such a thing though as a totally improvised drum solo? You always have some kind of idea of directions you're going to go right? But then again is there such a thing as I'm saying that I'm watching this video right now as I'm typing this! 🤣 Happy Thanksgiving! We are all thankful for your drumming and contribution to it 🤘🥁
Thanks so much for the kind words. It's a really good question too. I like to define "completely improvised" as going into it with absolutely no plan and avoiding falling back into whole sections that you've basically played before, even if not exactly. We can't escape using the same patterns, like how we use the same words with language when we express a new thought, but it feels quite different, as the speaker, when you're saying something "new" (to you) versus when you're telling an old story you've told several times. That's just where I draw the "improvised" line though. What about you?
@@JPBouvetI feel like it is such an art to be able to seamlessly put ideas together on a whim. This has definitely been something not easy for me to access in my playing but I do feel like I'm making strides in the right direction. I find that even having the little subsets where I can control them as exercises is one thing. Let's say two on the hands and one on the feet and doing all the possible accents. Then doing the same thing with two on hands and two on the feet but also using displacement so I'm not starting the group of four in the same place every time with the different accent patterns. And then doing this with three on the hands and two on the feet which leads to way more accent possibilities. Then taking all of these and playing them as 16th notes, 16th note triplets and 32nd notes.... But now taking these and just playing whatever comes to mind is a whole another ball of wax. Certain days are definitely better than others regarding flowing. It is such a great feeling to have when it seems like you can turn the analytical mind off. But some days that damn thing just wants to get in the way! 🤣 But it is just so fascinating when the work has been done with the exercises And then you just try to let everything go in an improvised way, that if you recorded yourself, there's no way that you can play the exact same solo each and every day. Just like what you played on this solo. There's no way that you would play this exactly the same ever again unless you transcribed every single note. It's really mind-boggling when you think of how the possibilities are literally endless and that you can explore and just stumble upon new ideas. It's actually pretty exciting. I think as long as the solo isn't something that you could play everyday exactly the way it is, you're pretty much improvising. I definitely think exposure to some kind of jazz or jazz fusion helps in this regard immensely. Btw, Nice email to all the members today on Thanksgiving ! Speaking for myself I can say I appreciate the work that you do on the website and how you put the lessons together. And I'm definitely looking forward to and curious to what the new course is going to be in 2024 on how to use paradiddles and doubles to play unfolding melodies on the kit. I've been working pretty hard on that type of stuff and the other things I mentioned earlier into solo contexts but now I'm finding that it's even seeping into drum fills which has been getting me out of that deep dark area where you feel like you're playing the same 💩 all the time. So here's to finishing 2023 out strong and full speed ahead in 2024! Keep inspiring us ! No pressure! 🤣
Perfection. Meanwhile, complete garbage is getting millions of likes on some other channel. Thank you JP for sharing true talent with us lucky listeners. Greetings from MN
Drum solos SUCK. But not this. Congrats mate, you told a story. Also I'm no expert on tuning by any means, but the bass drum seemed not integrated with the rest of the kit, imo. Wondering what yor mindset was behind the more muffled? tuning.. Cheers JP!
I completely agree about the kick drum. Good ear. It was partially due to lack of time and partially because the other stuff we filmed required a thicker kick sound like this. Also in this mix from Drumeo the close mics are used quite a high in the mix, whereas in the room the kick drum blended with the kit a bit more nicely. Anyways, thanks for watching and for the kind words.

JPB is a genius!
Totally different and way better than any other drummer I heard!
You've been my GOAT since the Guitar Center Drum off!!

Perfect solo musically. Interesting progression! Great Footage & editing. Grts from Belgium
Drumeo really does take some beautiful drum video. And thank you!

Ive been into drums for over 18 years and this video has inspired me to put them back in the storage because I will never reach this level
Sounding amazing as usual JP. I hear and see your teachings in your playing. Very inspiring. Those drums sounds so good. Nice sound mixing. Is that the Jazz or collectors series? Peace brother ✌️

THE KICK DRUM !!!!!1
Is that a frequent flyer bass drum? Just curious cause it sounds sick!

Kick sound is sooooo thick
