Does anyone else think it's sad that George never had any sweethearts? that always stuck out to me in the movie..like his whole life revolves around just working and taking care of Lenny.
In the book she seems more flirtatious like she wants to get with all the guys on the barn for no reason. But in the movie she is just in need of a friend and lonely since Curley won't let her talk to anyone.
You have to admire the character a lot. He gave up a good bit of his early life just to take care of Lennie when he had no real obligation to do so. He could have abandoned him at any time but he chose not to. Even when he shot him, he was ironically only doing it to protect him from an inevitably worse kind of death.
Let it Shinewolf yea I agree with u but it's not just that. ECURB511 we need to start the ancient torture technique of removing men’s testicles and organs without solid evidence that they committed the crime they were accused of again
I know a lot of people probably hate Curley's wife, but I honestly feel very sorry for her. Sure, she's smug, arrogant, lusty and irritable, but can you blame her? She's in an abusive/possessive/empty marriage with a smug, selfish, possessive asshole who doesn't let her talk to any one but him, and even then he's not nice to her. Before any of you come at me with him being vengeful and grief-stricken when she died, I think it was more of him feeling like a prized possession was stolen from him. Curley already has a temper and picks fights constantly over nothing, so I don't think he's above going to the extent of murder if someone stole from him.
The whole point was the fact that she could be trouble. And no one wanted anything to do with her because of the consequences. She could have been innocent for all they cared but the fact that she had a man was the reason why she was trouble. Remember the time period this is based on. Behavior like hers wasn't really praised.
Could care less about her sob story. In the book, she proceeded to call Crooks that one racial slur plus tells him that she could get him hung. Lynching was a thing in the 1930s.

John50 Beach one of the main points the book was trying to show is how unfairly women where treated, we never even find out her name, because no one cares
***** she didn't want to be killed she didn't think she would be killed. Her death was an accident. Your opinion is one John Stienbeck wanted. It makes the death of Lennie more tragic. But when you read the book again and again you realise that she did nothing really wrong. She is a young, naive and lonely girl with her dreams shattered in a loveless marriage there are no women around to talk to and at the end of the day she just wanted a friend and sadly that was Lennie.
Even though this scene wasn't in the book, its written so well and in character that it pretty well could have been. Gary Sinise was a great George and he knew what he was doing with this movie.
The story coulda took an interesting turn right here, where George and 'Curly's wife' run away with Lenny and the old guy and they go buy that farm; and then Lenny and the Old guy could tend the rabbits, animals, etc, and George and Curly's wife could get married and she could get her big break in hollywood, then Of mice and men 2 could've been a romantic comedy. But such is life
This scene wasn't in the book, a lot of scenes with Curley's wife aren't in the book, but they're really well written and play to her character very well in my opinion. This scene shows how flirtatious and lonely she is when Curley interrupts them, and in a later scene it shows how lonely she really is. Though Steinbeck didn't give her many scenes, and the writers of the movie had little to nothing to actually work with on her character, they were able to add in more scenes and cjange a few other scenes in very good ways. In my opinion, her character is explored more in both the sense of her loneliness and her flirtatious manner. Really shows the talent and time that went into it.
You guys should read the letter John Steinbeck wrote to Claire Luce about who Curley's Wife is. Even he, the man who wrote this part, says she's not a tart.
Honestly, George should have taken the time to warn Curly's Wife about going near Lennie in this scene. It likely would have completely prevented the hellish trouble that would come later.
I believe the entire direction of the story was to illustrate just how sad and desperate *everyone* was - its very bleakness was what made it starkly beautiful.
The poor woman needed someone to confide in. Steinbeck’s letter explains that she wasn’t trying to get with them, she was always conditioned to act towards men this way. She didn’t know any different.
I agree. She's just lonely, since her and Curley are in an abusive and possesive relationship. Curley abuses her and forbids her to leave their house and talk to anyone other than him. You can tell in the things she says.
At school my class had to watch the whole awesome book and movie then do an exam entirely focused around how curleys wife expresses strong feelings and attitudes. I literally wrote down 9 pages worth of information about that character and we still never know her real name.
We know she is older than 15 as its stated in the book that when a carnival came to town they wanted to take her but her mother said no. She was 15 then. she meets the man about the pictures and curly at a dance and it sounds like that happened a few years later. I would put her between 16-19. Still, very young.
because it shows curleys wife a minority, and its presented by the book where no name is given to her, just 'Curleys Wife' which refers to her as a just an object. :)
Because when this film was set girls were seen as a mans possession so by calling her curleys wife it tells us that she is just curleys possession and doesn't need a name
it also shows how she has no real identity and that women back then weren't thought of as there own person Nd didn't have as much rights as men and also that it's as if she is curleys property
The only character I didn’t feel heartbroken for in this book/movie was Curley. Everyone else just had such a hard, lonely, hard life where all they wanted was a damn chance to live a happy life. We all think about Lennie (and rightly so as he had it worst of all) but George has to give up his whole life to work and look after Lennie, and Curleys Wife has no one to even just talk to.
This is also why, in your GCSE, you have to learn the book, since if you talk about the film, or something which wasn’t even in the book itself, you’d instantly lose marks for it. This film does it justice imo, and this scene is in character for Curley’s Wife despite the fact this entire scene was never in the book, it’s also worth mentioning that characters in the film behave slightly differently too, especially George who seems like spiteful as opposed to how he acts in the book. You can’t quote what they say in the film either in your GCSE, you’d again lose marks (unless it’s something literally the same).
There are good reasons why the visual medium cannot be an exact representation of the text medium. Just appreciate each on its own merits, and there'll be no disgruntlement required.
