I feel sad because all of these people are like ‘ who’s got an exam tomorrow’ but they all said it 4-5 years ago which means they most likely graduated
This book honestly brought a tear to my eye. You like to think candy and George got a farm for themselves, but in the back of your head you know George and candy died broke and on a farm
That's ridiculous. You have to remember, Lenny was kinda holding George back. Sure, they got to pool money, but it was only gonna take a month. Give them 3 months and I can't see why they couldn't make it.
“‘I’ll work my month an’ I’ll take my fifty bucks an’ I’ll stay all night in some lousy cat house. Or I’ll set in some poolroom till ever’body goes home. An’ then I’ll come back an’ work another month an’ I’ll have fifty bucks more’” (Steinbeck 95).
This is months old but it helps me practicepp for the exam so :/. no matter how much Lenny held him back, the main reason George even wanted that farm was because of Lenny. George is a fairly average person, and his friendship with Lenny in a world of migrant workers where everyone is lonely and such close friendships were rare is the only thing that made him worth something and prevent him from completely being hopeless. the kind of childish naivety in a depressing adult world that Lenny had and the constant repetition of the dream made him actually believe it and work towards something. That childish naivety is however what brings Lenny's downfall in the novel, as if he was capable of understanding the seriousness of his situation with Curley's wife, she probably wouldn't have died. This is Steinbeck's main argument in the book - that happiness can be achieved through friendship, but cannot be achieved in a world as cruel as the one itinerant workers had. At the same time, being blinded by a dream and child naivety is also wrong and brings to destruction. The american dream is long dead.
George killed Lennie because he knew if Lennie was found by Curley and his posse, what they did to him would be much worse than what George did, in essence, saving Lennie from a crueler fate.
This was probably one of the only books that every school is forced to read and yet I actually enjoyed. Update: Apparently you all didn’t read enough if you think “I” (meaning my own personal experience) means “everyone else.” What books you read and liked are different than mine. Sorry I thought Great Gatsby was Mediocre Gatsby but chill.
+Payton Newman The hallucination scene at the end demonstrates that Lennie remembered all the things that George told him not to do, and all the wrongs he had done that he claimed and pretended he had forgotten. Then he ignores his aunt telling him about George and talks to an imaginary rabbit instead, demonstrating that he doesn't care about George, and is only pursuing his dream of tending to the rabbits, using George as a means to reach his own goal, and in the process, destroying George's dream. All in all, Lennie is the selfish one in the story, and George is the one who has to kill his only friend, and has his dream destroyed. pretty much just copied that from my hw xD
+Payton Newman Yeah, it really shows you how far the treatment of people who intellectual disabilities has come-back then they didn't treat them with dignity and respect like we do now
If anyone is watching this because they dont want to read the book, READ IT!! I read it when I was about ten and it didnt take me very long. It is absolutely worth it.
I know a lot of students are here because they didn't read the book, but please take time to read this short, insane classic. I couldn't set this book down. The emotions grabbed me much harder in the book than any explanation.
Lennie's disabled and when he gets panicked, he focuses on holding onto the thing he likes and making sure it doesn't escape his grip. He's not aware of his own strength because he doesn't know how to control himself and doesn't comprehend what's good and bad to do.
A important part is that candy said he shouldn't have let them shoot his dog. He should have done it himself. Kinda putting George in the perspective that if Lenny will be killed it shouldn't be by a stranger but someone that cares for him. Someone he loves and trust near by and not surrounded by anger and fear. I honestly find this book so emotional and suggest you read it instead of spark notes. I seriously cried reading this book
He dealt with the problem himself rather than having the others do it. It's kind of what Candy said after they killed his dog: "I ought to of shot that dog myself, George. I shouldn’t ought to of let no stranger shoot my dog."
I remember lamenting the fact that I had to read this in school but as I actually read it, I turned out to be a great book. A truly heart-wrenching story that reminds you that if you have somebody, cherish them because so many people don't have anybody.

I just finished reading this book, and i absolutely loved it. I personally think the book talks about mental illness, using other people for your own personal benefit, and loneliness. But that's what i personally think. I loved it 8/10
I find it so ironic that Lenny always keeps pet mice that he ends up killing, and in the same way Lenny is goerge pet mouse, because he has to take care of him and ends up killing him.

I didn't read this book in school, it was in the 1960s, but I read it because I loved to read John Steinbeck's work. But when I saw the movie, it really shook me. His reaction was more his way of dealing with the death of Lenny. Sure Lenny was borderline useless most of the time and was way more trouble than he was worth, but George still cared for him. Throughout the book George always dealt with things like it wasn't his problem and that it was being forced onto him by others. Him just saying "I killed Lenny; Lets go back" was him trying to say "I fixed the problem for you guys and forget it ever happened." was him trying to get away from what he did.
After George about Lenny's crime, he knows that Lenny has become too much of a problem and prevents the pair to be truly happy in the lonely migrant worker community. His fateful decision is truly decided by his care for Lenny. George has been his guardian since Aunt Clara died and wants to protect him. He doesn't know how to protect Lenny at the end since the situation got way too out of hand. George felt that the best way to protect him was to shoot him. Lenny's death parallels Candy's dog.
Hi, I'm French. I read this book during my second year of high school (we have 3 years of high school in France) and it was a pleasure to discover the english literary... In french, Of mice and men is Des souris et des hommes Enjoy ;)
Yeah, I’m from Quebec and even though it’s been over-done in this comment section, I do actually have an exam about it tomorrow- I’m in secondary 5 (which is, according to Wikipedia, the equivalent of Première au lycée (?) (j’ai jamais compris l’affaire où vous comptez vos années d’école à l’envers (comme combien d’années il vous reste au lieu de ça fait combien d’années que vous étudiez-) en tous cas 🤷♂️) and we also read the French version~ That was all lol
This is an excellent idea for people like me who really should be able to have conversations about great novels but can't be bothered reading.. Or because of dyslexia so thank you.
Have to read this for American Lit and I already read the book twice before we started on it in class. I cried a lot and we're only halfway done in class. Its gonna be so difficult at the end. :(
I think this is the first Steinbeck book I read. The last was Travels with Charlie. This one made me sad, but I realized that sudden death is better than being lynched. Travels with Charlie gave me a little insight into life, but it was pretty weak tea compared to the other Steinbeck novels.
don't mean to be harsh, the costumes are pretty good, and the character placements are spot on.....but the "old black guy, Crooks" looks like a 20 year old kid at 4:22!!!!.....Steinbeck says he had DEEP LINES in his face, deep set eyes, and a back injury!!!
That is definitely a summary but I had to read it for school in the UK and... It hits different. When you read it you imagine people, like I thought Slim was - Slim but built. Carlson a guy with stretch mark on his face from runnin' his jaw too much and potbelly. Candy is just a wrinkly old man and Dickface Carlson just went out and shout his only companion. Curley in my minds eye had curly hair... It's a great book and I would recommend everyone ever to read it. P.S. I didn't even know about the Great Depression before I read Of Mice And Men.
After reading the book, one can appreciate all the details included that were not in the movie. The one that irks me the most is the fact that in the movie, Carlson's "luger" is a revolver. A luger is a semi - auto pistol that looks like the pistols Nazis use in movies.
I feel sad because all of these people are like ‘ who’s got an exam tomorrow’ but they all said it 4-5 years ago which means they most likely graduated

Thank you for helping me with my exam tomorrow
Did anyone get a decent grade by watching this for an exam?
B+ I'll take that all day from a 10 minute video
+Tom Pham HEEEELLLL YEAH!
A+
I aced it :))))
I think this is the first Steinbeck book I read. The last was Travels with Charlie. This one made me sad, but I realized that sudden death is better than being lynched. Travels with Charlie gave me a little insight into life, but it was pretty weak tea compared to the other Steinbeck novels.
I really enjoyed this book. I also enjoyed the 1992 film adaptation as well. ^^
Well i don't have to read the book for my exam and you sir just got a sub for thanks
Fuck this exam tommrow 😴
+Ryan Wiggins LMAO
Im so thankfull that I pass the test by watching a 10 min video.
This is such a great summary thank you!
I love this book so much it's been so many years since I read this
don't mean to be harsh, the costumes are pretty good, and the character placements are spot on.....but the "old black guy, Crooks" looks like a 20 year old kid at 4:22!!!!.....Steinbeck says he had DEEP LINES in his face, deep set eyes, and a back injury!!!
john iorio 20 year old kid doesn’t have a nice tone
You just saved my English Grade thanks
this really helped, easier then re-reading the book. I don't remember the giant rabbit hallucination though?
This totally answered my homework. THANK YOU SPARKSNOTE!
Who's here in 2024 hours before the HL English exam 😂
1 hour lect
Me 😂
That is definitely a summary but I had to read it for school in the UK and...
God bless you all have a great day, And holidays!

z7zKrazzy Thanks man hopefully we will
After reading the book, one can appreciate all the details included that were not in the movie. The one that irks me the most is the fact that in the movie, Carlson's "luger" is a revolver. A luger is a semi - auto pistol that looks like the pistols Nazis use in movies.
