- "Monkey Man" is my favorite song from the unreleased album Lillywhite sessions, and for the matter, my favorite DMB song ever. So I decided to put together my own music video (with full lyrics) for the song.
The sections with no words is mostly just a blank screen, so sit back and enjoy. Thanks to Karmageddon for remastering the entire Lillywhite album.
I would be interested in knowing what you think. Thanks!
UPDATE: antsmarching.org/news/2014/03/...!
Brilliantly written song. I love the vibes of this tune!
By far the greatest "should've been album" ever. Can't wait for the summer!!!
We can hope and dream to see this live
Never gonna happen but I really hope I'm wrong!
I think Dave basically repurposed for this for So Right, which is probably the biggest reason why it will never see the light of day.
@@brett66 ...but it sees the light everytime we watch n listen to this majestic gem...thanks to jake...☝🏼💜
Seriously thanks. I didn't expect to get that much- and in such good quality!
Favorite track of the Lillywhite sessions by far... You rock for uploading this btw. Cheers
Dude, if they did that, I wouldn't even know what to do. Imagine being at a concert, and all of the sudden... it comes on. WOW. But honestly, I don't think it'll ever come back.
...you have predicted that one my friend...☝🏼💜
...ty...#dMbfamily
one of my favs from DMB.. Good times
Jake - Great job - that's what I think! I clicked on DMB Monkey Man just to see if anyone loves this song as much as I do. I know almost every DMB song, but I think this one's my #1 favorite, out of many. BTW, I think he sings "drive faster" at 1:08 (fits the topic). "Build higher, still higher" always gets me too...
Gret job Jake! I love this song and you really nailed it bro!
One of the finest songs DMB has ever written...really a shame that this might be the only recording of such a great song & it's never surfaced with the band live, but at least we have this! Thanks for posting!
I think this is probably one of DMB's classic songs. I'm glad to find I'm not the only one! This album is just raw...love it.
Great song... thanks for posting.
Well, I would certainly that some of their new material looks to be outstanding. What I like most about this song is Carter's drum line. When listening to the high quality version, you really pick up a lot of stuff that Carter does that is really good. This summer tour should be awesome... TIM REYNOLDS!
Great song, one of my favorite on LWS. I hope they resurrect it at some point!
nice job man, thanks for this. gotta love lillywhite sessions. at least for the true fans
You know, that is a very valid point. LeRoi was so amazing, and it's sad to think we'll never get to see him again on stage. Apparently, he use to help write a lot of the songs, so it will be interesting to see how DMB changes with his absence.
I think we see where it went
Definitely a different sound and writing style
Still love the band though
Thanks for this video. Very nice visuals makes me want to see along. Good editing I just would add more pics of Dave during the blackened screen. Very well done...thanks.
Thanks for this. Hope they play this for the first time ever I might add in Camden this year! lol
That is so true! The album is raw, and showcases DMB very well. Very insightful
He's totally obsessed with the Monkey!
...hello my friend...☝🏼💜
For sure. Makes you wonder how much other unreleased DMB material there is...
...too many to keep count...12yrs of having this majestic gem in my rare dMb playlist n I just wanted to thank you for leaving it up...☝🏼💜🍻
I will not sleep until I find this song.
Thanks. I felt the same way I first found them! I'm working on another vidoe right now... should be done soon.
Break Free was played only 16 times during the 2006 tour and since the new studio album that is about to come out next year is going to have all new songs, it is likely that we will never hear Break Free again, which is a shame because it is such an awesome song.
Yes, that it is true. I think it would be awesome if Break Free is on there.
But more importantly, I am VERY excited to hear studio recordings of Rashawn with DMB. All of their live stuff has been absolutely outstanding.
So true. I can't believe he passed. He was such a big part of DMB.
Jake1729, thank you SO MUCH for downloading LWS online.
ahhh..I'm in love...
DMB why in the world would you cut this amazing song???
Thanks!
the most amazing thing is that this isnt even the finished product, there is supposedly a finished version out there with boyd in it.
How about Break Free? I've got that one on my Ipod! But their older stuff is still incredibly priceless.
Dave did an interview recently. The DJ asked why he sings so much about monkeys, to which Dave replied (basically): "they're really interesting".
Has this song ever been played live?! I like it.
Everyday for one.. but i'm really digging some of the new songs like shotgun, cornbread, and idea of you..
Yes. The next one will be Sweet Up and Down in about 6 weeks when I'm done with classes...
Oh, I completely agree. My hope is that Dave is just being Dave and just messing with the fans and in fact there are a few songs that fans already know on there. Just like you said, my first choice would be Shotgun. The way the lyrics have developed, its become an amazing song, especially live and it would be a shame if it doesn't get put on an album.
Ron redhead Jr you're own sun because you warship moon..
I was referring to the album itself. Not the EP and what might possibly be on there.
Yep :-). Karmageddon did a wonderful job..
The crazy thing is that this isnt even the completed version, there's no violin, i'd love to get my hands on the finished product
They should release this album. I know it might seem too late, but they should really officially release it.
Drew n Lea, hello my friends...couldn't help myself, enjoy...☝🏼💜
I am curious why Dave soured on this song. It is a catchy tune and my favorite from the Lillywhite Sessions.
lol, yes! First one to catch that!
You know, that's something my wife pointed out after I had posted video. But I'm glad you liked it!
Dave has said that the album is all new songs.
Apparently this song ended up turning into "so right" don't quote me thats what everyone said on the message boards a few years back. Probably the greatest out- take ever
love lillywhite sessions your site is sick too
I'm actually really curious, what about the song indicates to you it's DMB at their worst? Or what about the song bores you? I really am interested in knowing what you specifically think about it.
YOU are welcome!
Of course there are some other really great songs as well. What are some other songs you think are much better than this one?
@jake1729 WOW, that would be epic!
he says "well did you think grey was the color of bliss, you think i dont know quite what to say but im worried for my self in this" just to let you know
How many KB is this song?? The ONLY one that I can find on Limewire is 3500 kb....sounds way too small
has never been played live, doubt it ever will sadly
I like this song! Its got a great melody and maybe it does have a profound meaning. Maybe he's singing about how the humans have destroyed their planet and now we have no place to go.
where did u get these songs man?? please
so fuckin' true !!!!
Yeah I'd sill consider it new but what I meant by that is that he said its all unheard songs. I hope thats not entirely true and they put a couple like Break Free on there but we'll see.
Never been played live. Probably never will be.
Thanks!! Wish I could return the favor, but at least you'll be happy to know that I slept like a baby.
Basically, SHNs are compressed WAV files. Checkout etree[dot]org/mkw[dot]html for directions
the album itself will have absolutely none. All that live stuff like shotgun and maybe IOY and others will be on the EP to be released later in the year
I have posted high quality WAV files of the entire album (and then some) on my website at jake1729[dot]com/dmb
My guess is the South African/Nature theme seen throughout most of his music.
Creep- Radiohead?
Sean Hopkins interesting
Friendly reminder, it’s pronounced “The Summer So Far.” This brilliant gift no one was supposed to hear, can’t we at least call the album the right name? Or did LeRoi, Boyd, Stefan, and company round table the possible album name and scratch summer so far in lieu of paying homage to Steve lillywhite and just name the album after him? Show some respect.
It doesn't matter because it wasn't released. The band doesn't care what it's called.
I posted the mastered version of LW on my website at jake1729[dot]com/dmb

Ive got nothing against this song, and it sounds really good, but in my opinion its not the best DMB song, let me explain.
1. It doesnt have great meaning really (Where did you think that gray was the color of this?)
2. The band hated writing the songs for the Lillywhit sessions (including this one)
3. It seems unfinished, if they worked on this song like the did with GreyStreet and Captain, then this could become one of my favorite songs.
If you disagree with this don't vote it down tell me why
Nobody cares.
Thanks for your thoughts. I'm just meh with it as well.
Yes, the band has stated they were in a dark place when working on the lillywhite sessions, but imo, it's some of their best work. Such a shame it wasn't released as is. You mention "captain". The LWS version is so much better than what they changed it to on BS.
Download from my website... jake1729[dot]com/dmb Now you can sleep good!!
You are in luck... I posted high quality version on my website at jake1729[dot]com/dmb
Dude, you're favorite DMB track ever? I don't get it. Not to hate, but, it seems sub-par for DMB.
I think I read someplace that Dave was unhappy with the sessions and generally depressed because he felt he was not writing good songs for his band. And this track, to me, would seem to support that.
By the way, can't wait for the next album & tour. : ) I saw them last year at the Hollywood Bowl and they played some great new tracks.
hmmmmmmmm . . . Its cool i guess, but they have so many songs that are so much better than this . . .
