Good video. I would add "not getting any exercise in a fasted state" to the list. If you are doing time-restricted eating, a brisk daily walk in the morning, when you are in a fasted state, will help to pull down stored glycogen, enhancing ketosis/fat burning during the remaining hours of the fast.

I've been low carb since last summer. I've introduced intermittent fasting for about the last two months. I simply skip my old high-carb cereal based breakfast . I feel clearheaded and energetic. My joints ache less, and I sleep well. I don't miss the carbs or the whole aisles ok the supermarket which I don't need to choose from these days. I love it.

I started IF 18:6 at the same time I started Keto on 1st July last year. It was a natural choice for me. I lost 35lbs in the first 8 weeks and felt great: dropped my afternoon nap, had noticeable mental clarity, more motivation and much more energy. Additionally, all the IBS symptoms I had experienced for over 30 yrs literally disappeared overnight. I'm even eating food now that my IBS had prevented me from eating before. IF 18:6 is definitely the norm for me now. I eat two meals a day and one small snack. I've completely cut out sugar, processed food, bread, biscuits and cake, etc and feel so much better for it. The only negative part of Keto is chronic insomnia but I can cope with that. I've been maintaining my weight since September. My weight fluctuates by just 1 kilo weekly. I tried 24 hr fasting but that increased to three days. It was so much easier than I thought it would be but I personally don't think that 3 day fasting is necessary. I occasionally still fast but for no longer than 24 hours. I'm 68 now and feel far fitter than I ever have (without the need to go the gym).

I fast for about 38 hours every 10 days (days of the month with a zero) or 10% of the time. I've gotten to the point where I look forward to, and enjoy, my fasting days because I don't have to think about food, get a lot done during the day, feel amazing, and often loose a kilo as well.

Hi Dr Dan love your straight forward approach to the Keto way of eating and the fact you're UK based as I am. As the Ketogenic way of eating is so new and misunderstood in this country by people and the medical organisations its so good to have you giving good reliable information. I have a question for you, I've been doing keto for around three years with a few breaks which I know isn't a good thing I know but I've developed Gout in the last six to eight months, I'm 51 and are on meds for high blood pressure, depression and asthma. What are you thoughts on Gout and protein rich way of eating. I've had a bit of a frustrating trip to my GP regarding my keto diet and Gout today.

Exercise is great for asthma, depression and blood pressure, just start slowly maybe long walks, then slowly jogging. Cutting out sugar is vital, but also making sure you get enough real salt with minerals like Redmond sea salt.

How ever If you keep fasting , not loosing weight , not feeling lethargic or loosing hair might not the reason be that you are highly insulin resistant ? Or that you still run on carbs? Dr Fung has no problem with fasting frequently or prolonged. As long as you do not starve yourself (long periods with too few calories but grazing will send your body into saving/starvation- mode.)
BTW I train fasting and fast every day 18 -21 hours - plus 48 hours twice a month. My problem : candy days. Gotta deal with them carbs and it is getting better. Less cravings

Hi,Dr Maggs, I have been watching your Videos & they've helped a great deal on my wife's & my IF journey. We started 3 months back & have lost a good amount of fat at the waist & belly. However getting very low Carb foods is difficult particularly in Indian family meals. We are doing IF for 18 hrs per day for 5 days a week. At times I've noticed the Ketosis symptoms, indicated by you, so things seem tobe working. What we are not able to control is " Carbs less than 30gmsper day". So how to go about & how much of a worry is this on our IF journey? . My wife is 71years & I'm 74 years. We are close to desired weight of 60kgs & 72 kgs resptly. Hemant Misra, India

I've been doing OMAD for over 2 years and lost 100lbs but have stalled/plateaued for a whole year. I gained over Xmas cos I stopped keto and omad for 3 days and it took 2 weeks to lose that weight but now I've been exactly the same weight for a month and weigh no less than this time last year. I've only got 1 stone to go but can't shift it. I've done multiple 72 hour fasts but I actually gain on those presumably because I drink more. I'm stuck on what to do next.

As I'm watching this video I'm enjoying a bowl of 200g of bacon and three home grown free-range eggs. It's 2pm and I'm breaking my fast. I'm sure I won't be hungry again until tomorrow around this time but I'm probably going to eat a bowl of fish roe and milt, leftover from yesterday, just because it's there. I won't care thought because, since I've been on a carnivore diet for upwards of a year, I'm so fucken lean and healthy and feeling like I won a million dollar lottery by discovering the carnivore (or at least less than 50g of carbs on any particular day) diet...overindulging is of no concern. And it hardly ever happens since I'm never hungry. I might even snack on an avocado, or a guava fruit, or a big piece of chocolate (100% cocoa sweetened with a little stevia).
Once in awhile I'll do a longer (autophagy) fast of two or three days, and that's easy too (so long as I have extra fat to burn. If not I won't do it.).
Don't forget, "If not NOW, then when?" (That's kind of an enlightenment question actually, but it works for 'When will I start becoming healthier?' as well.) ✌😎

I wonder what your take would be on building muscle whilst intermittent fasting.... Spreading protein across the day seems to be the general consensus for protein synthesis??

    • @159awi
      @159awi 2 роки тому

I do a 16/8 window. I'm targeting at least 100 gms of protein a day. That means at least 50 for the first meal and at least 50 for the last. That gives the leucine amounts required for muscle synthesis twice a day. Also keeps hunger way down.

My biggest mistake might be too much fasting !
    Normally , I might fast for 3 days .
Then eat good nutritional food , between 900cal - 1000 cal
    P. day , for 3 days that seems to be my optimal calorie intake, as I have a heart problem
    ( engina ) !
and unable to exercise too much !
However, I am a bit concerned that the fat I take may clog my arteries to my heart !
I HAVE paid attention to your videos that say I will burn the fat I consume , but everything I have heard tells me the fat will clog my arteries !
My grandfather died from heart failure !
My mother said his arteries were fat cloged .
This makes me think this may be a
    genetic trait !
I will take my chances and stay on
    Keto .
    Whether my life be
    Long, or short !

"Balance" is the hardest part of the journey. By trial and error, learning from mistakes, and being willing to push through the mistakes, I'm finding balance. But balance isn't static, different life-activities constantly require adjustments to remain balanced. But those adjustments are typically small and easy to implement once a general balance is achieved.
Thanks for the video, good info!
