I think an interesting budget video would be for you to take a few hundred dollars into a few stores such as bass pro, REI, sportsman’s warehouse, Scheels or any outdoor store and see what you can get for the same amount of money at each store. Kinda see which store you can get the best bag for your buck!
I think $500 budget with no specific store and trying to make it the most comfortable camping would be cool! I feel like that is a very realistic budget for beginning camping!
These videos are great! Mike's advice about FB Marketplace is spot on: there is a lot of great stuff there. Also having a friend who camps and can share gear is always a plus.
For those that don't know. That condensation is from lack of airflow in a single wall tent with almost no mesh. That condensation can be a killer in colder environments. Over night, the sleeping bag gets wet, your clothes get wet, wakeup wet and cold, hyperthermia sets in. Enjoyed the budget gear vid very much. Thanks.
Seam seal and waterproof the tent with some waterproofing spray, lay down an emergency blanket on the floor of the tent to reflect heat, layer up, get a used, surplus military issued bivvy and you're good to go. All that can be done for anywhere between 100-130 bucks. Not bad for a cold night's setup. Thats what I do. I don't camp all the time maybe twice a year and ive had one of these tents last me since about 2018-2019.
I obviously use a sleeping pad. That was about 15 bucks. And in conjunction I'll put an inflatable one on top that was about $20. So it's cheap tarp, tent on top, cheap disposable emergency blanket on floor, military foam sleeping pad so my body heat doesn't escape too easily, cheap $20 inflatable pad on top of that, then the Goretex bivvy with the jungle bag inside and a surplus wool blanket and I guarantee to you, you can sleep nice and cozy in some cold temperatures for pretty cheap.
I use the rule of 2, for one person a 2 person tent is big enough for one person plus gear, also a cargo blanket on the tent floor helps with a little coushion and some insilation under you, also a simple battery fan is a life saver in a tent like that just to keep air moving and if you are able to catch some flow under the fly keep condensation at minimum if not clear

Great video. You should do another video at a $200-$250 price range then maybe a $500 price range. Kind of a test to find the minimum budget to put together a comfortable function camping set up. So beginners can see what the minimum budget they need to set aside to start off.
I can not imagine how hot that tent gets in the hotter month 😂 As a tip for anyone that wants to camp on the cheap, keep an eye on the walmart and academy clearance sections around October. You can find insane deals if you are patient and not to picky. Got a 300 dollar North Face tent for 60 bucks last year, it is uglier than sin but it is high quality and doesnt leak

I think absolute bare basics camping and having an actually enjoyable experience would cost roughly $300 at a combo of walmart, Amazon and Costco for low to mid range gear. I accumulated probably just under $1k worth of gear before I moved away from home and had to abandon my gear at my parents' place. Hadn't gone camping in years and finally went this year for a friend's wedding in the woods. I actually spent about $500 total to reup on my gear on top of maybe $100 worth of genral outdoor rec stuff I already had on hand, but $200 of the $500 was definitely creature comforts and "just in case" stuff and a lot of it isn't really overland focused, niether was my gear that I abandoned, but more "pull up to a campsite and set up". I bought it with the intention of continuing ot go camping at least twice a year, and I want this gear to suffice for me and my wife, so I went OK quality, but cheap enough that if it didn't meet expectation its nbd. So here is what I considered as part of my $300 "necessities" Gear- Walmart Gear - Ozark Trail Mess Kit - $10 Ozark Trail Skillet Set - $24 48QT Cooler (Would go bigger if camping longer than a few days)- $25 Pop-up Canopy 10x10- $50 Sleeping bag - $20 mini charcoal grill - $15 Grilling utensils kit - $20 Cooking utensils kit - $15 Tent - $27 Knife set - $18 Inflatable matress (can be subbed for a sleeping pad) - $20 Amazon Gear- Folding shovel - $28.00 Camp pillow - $18 200ft of Paracord - $17 Total for above comes out to just under $300 and leaves some space for other creature comforts like maybe a camp stove. Again a lot of the purchase decisions were made with the idea that this gear would be used a few times a year, and dedicated for this purpose. Packaged most of this gear between two plastic totes. Just need to throw em in my truck and go. Get home, take inventory, maybe wash some things, then pack em back up and shuck it in storage till next time.

I drove down to the scheels north of the springs area from Denver and camped out near there with some stuff I bought and they have some things there that are pretty affordable if you up that budget. Keep up the good work man and stay safe.

I can't afford a crate of ammo at once... but a box every other payday adds up. and a flashlight here and a pan there and a sleeping bag for Christmas adds up after 20 years. now all I need to do is move somewhere nice instead of south coast Texas where winter is only in February and it's too hot to go outside between April and november

I was able to find a Coleman Skydome 4-person tent (MSRP: $130 at Walmart) for $40, and took that to my first camping trip at Monte Sano State Park in Huntsville, AL last month. The previous owner had used the tent exactly once, and it was exactly what I needed for a cost that I wouldn't have been too sad over had I not enjoyed it as much as I did.

I would think that you could get a pretty dang good set up for $500. Sierra can have some good deals. Looking for close out deals, clearance sales etc can land you with a good set up and not cost a fortune. I happened to go to camping world when they had an extra 50% off clearance and scored Kelty tents for the kids for $30. I also got a Jet Boil stove for $50.

I get what you’re saying and I am totally on point with you. It is super inexpensive to go camping, particularly if you can get into the National Forest and not have to pay for a campsite. When I was much younger, before I got my quarter of $1 million Sprinter Van, we went out and bought a super cheap tent and brought pillows and things from home and you don’t even need to buy the sleeping bag and all that. it just takes some imagination and excitement to get out and enjoy the great outdoors with even no protection. The cheapest one person tent that I had, and I am almost 6‘5“ tall, was $14. I still have one of those to mark campsites when we are in the woods.
Same. Before I bought my $1.65 million Earth Roamer I use to just through a blanket into the back of my '89 Ford F150 and go spend the night at a free National Forest campsite. We're almost twins. Must suck for you being poor though.

You have to at least spend the money on a good tent or a Harbor Freight tarp . The cooking stuff was okay and would work but your comfort is worth the layout of money. Please do not use that gear! The tent has no ventilation, condensation is going to be horrible. The tent will leak in no time. The sleeping pad has no insulation and will deflate overnight. You will be cold, wet, and miserable. You will be vaccinated against camping for life if you use that cheap gear!
