To not confuse people wanting to learn to shoot in log - turning ISO up or down doesn't actually turn brightness up or down (doesn't put more light on the sensor). It synthetically "increases" sensitivity, like a slider does in Premiere or other editing software. To increase the exposure, you literally need more light to hit the sensor.
Increasing ISO equates to increase gain, therefore increasing noise because it "brute forces" the sensor to increase sensitivity electrically. Over the years though, it has significantly improve, but it still does add noise. Aside from noise, the higher the ISO, the lower the dynamic range will become. It also changes middle grey. This is where most filmmakers didn't realize. Yes, overexposing by increasing ISO and lowering it on post, you will have cleaner image, but on the expense of the camera's dynamic range as mentioned. Colorists will also not like you because aside from the decrease of the dynamic range, as mentioned, increasing ISO also changes middle grey, and middle grey is very important in look development. Anyways, just use native ISO, find the middle grey, and expose properly the image based on the middle grey, and if you are shooting outdoors, use an ND filter, or variable ND filter for run & gun shooting. Yes, variable ND filter have color casts and expensive, but there are not so expensive variable ND filters you can buy like the K&F Nano-X pro that lessens these color casts, so its a happy compromise. There are more expensive filters such as the Nisi True color VND which is really close to the colors that you shot without the filter so its better. Heck, I was really surprised that many DOP's were using the 2nd native ISO outdoors (for dual native ISO cameras) if they can without clipping highlights because the 2nd native ISO actually has better dynamic range for the highlights and the 1st native ISO actually has better dynamic range for the shadows. For lowlight situations, if you really want to maximize your camera's capability, add more lights. Overexposing by adding more lights is even better, because as mentioned lowering it on post will result to cleaner image without compromise, just don't increase your ISO (aside from the 2nd native ISO for dual native cameras) to not lower the camera's dynamic range, and be careful of your highlights.
Is there any different between SLOG3 in the PP Menu (when i chance another pp, cine 1 to SLOG3 for example) and the SLOG3 in the „Flexible ISO, Cine EI…“ point in the Settings ?

Hey Matt, just a big thanks for your videos! Rented a Sony FX3 to shoot a rock band and used your settings. The footage is so fantastic. Everything was shot indoors so I had to do the lighting myself. Results are amazing. Just started editing so it will be a while before the video is complete, sorry I can’t share it with you yet. So I turn on log shooting on the menu on my fx30 and leave the picture profile off? Or do I also put it on a picture profile? On my A7iv I just have PP1 set to slog3. Do I not do that on the fx30? Sorry if that’s dumb I just got a fx30 and I’m trying to learn it.
I do a lot of shooting outdoors, especially birds, in rapidly varying light conditions. I have set my #3 button on the FX30 to toggle between ISO 800 and 2500. I also use Cine EI and auto-aperture so it is very different from your manual approach but it gets me a pretty decent result in many different situations where there just isn't time to do things in manual..

While filming a wedding using the FX30 for the first time; I encountered an issue where the screen flashed Red and the camera turned off during the ceremony. When it came back on everything was good and I continued without issue. Although the file of the footage that I was filming turned into an .rsv file. I work on windows os I exported a video from Da Vinci resolve using Rec709 - A colorspace and it looks slightly different on mac os in terms of greens and blues mostly when the color profile of MacBook m1 air is set to COLOR LCD. I tested this thing with many youtube videos the results are the same. But when I changed the MacBook m1 air color space to Rec. ITU-R BT.709-5 or sRGB IEC61966-2.1 the colors were mostly the same as viewed in Windows or any other Android devices. I searched a lot about this - > Which is the correct color space and gamma tag to export from Da Vinci Resolve? > Why there is a difference in colors among Apple devices, windows devices, and Android devices when all are properly color calibrated? > Which color space settings are best for Mac displays so that one video would look the same on Windows or mac display? > Best way to learn these things (i.e. color space, color profile, export color settings) so that we can have the same colors through multiple devices? Please make a good explainer video on this as there is no as easy or trustable resource to gain this information learn about it. 94 is the exact number that Sony says will show you zebras when the camera overexposed. Sure you could choose 95 but it takes about 5 seconds to get things dialed in exactly so I figure you might as well do it right 😊
Can I use auto iso and set my exposure compensation at +1.7? Will this work in lower light situations? I understand in brighter situations it wouldn’t and an ND filter is best. Just curious. Thanks! New to this channel. Goos stuff

Hey Matt, just switched to shooting my first wedding in log due to your video ^^ however I found that switching settings or the light changing on me (clouds) made me lose some shots as in being under or over exposed. Is there a solution to this? Auto shutter (not going under dubbel fps) and/or auto apeture when the iso is fixed at 800? Would come in handy to have all my footage similarly exposed when importing. because now I fear it'll be a lot of work. Just wondering how you do it for suture assignments. Or is it normal to always manually correct parameters to propperly exposure on the go? for example the couple coming out of church into the light.... found it was quite a hassle and fear it might be visible and hard to edit over fluently in post.

So I’m confused on ISO.. earlier in the video when showing the tree decoration you said the exposure was correct at 2.0 but the ISO was way high at 12,500 but then later you said not to go over 2500 for sweet spot. Could you shed some light on this please? (See what I did there?) serious question though.
It appears that he might have reused some b-roll from a a7S III / FX3 (The base ISO on these cameras is 800 & 12800). The Base ISO on the FX30 is 800 & 2500.
This is why I shoot Cine EI. Of course flexible ISO allows you to push your ISO more for loss in dynamic range however, Cine EI makes you think more of a cinematographer where you determine if you need more lights or a faster lens to compensate for the noise.
Just starting out with the FX30 after more than 20 years in the Panasonic world. You just saved me a couple of months of trial and error trying to figure things out. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Subscribed.

Yeah that’s what I like about cine EI it pretty much says “yeah so iso isn’t an exposure tool” and forces people to adjust exposure with t-stop or ND

If 94 is the max and you set it to 95 you will never see zebras, making it useless.

If you are exposing for skin tones is it better to set zebras for lower...I have heard 70? Or should you expose for the entire image at 94
