    "Is this the future of electric charging?"
    No. For three reasons:
    1) Any external appliance that needs a fan (with its entry and exit holes, what with insects, dust and other problems), is doomed to failure;
    2) Any external appliance that uses an off-the-shelf Raspberry Pi (not designed for the external environment), is doomed to failure;
    3) Any OS-driven device (like the Raspberry Pi) is a security nightmare, able to be easily hacked. And with WiFi doubly so...
    All right, with #3 above there are many (many) mitigations which would ameliorate this. But so many vendors use an out-of-the-box distro with no thought to security that I fear they've done the same thing. And even if they try, the attempt is often a Band-Aid rather than a proper security solution.
    I'll also say: if they're new, they don't have many customers, so of course their customer service is responsive. Wait until they get a million customers...
    Finally: I, personally, simply cannot use this charger. My charge point is two floors below me in the underground car space for my apartment. It gets zero Internet. It certainly can't connect to my home Internet with WiFi or hardwired Ethernet, and it's a cellphone blackspot. All of your touted advanced features are useless (much as I'd love to run a rave down there?)
    Oh, and if it makes sparks it's either high voltage or (very) high current. Low voltage cannot spark unless the current is abnormally high (in which case the metal itself is melting...)

    • @alexflav23
      @alexflav23 3 роки тому

      Correct, but missing the point, and naturally so, because you get to witness a product at a moment in time. Integrated computing takes longer to deliver, users don't care though. Pis are not there to last, fans are not there to last, they are there to prove a point. On the customer service, we shall see what we do with a million more users.
      Otherwise all negatives here are not long term features, in fact they are melting before our very eyes. Only the good stuff remains!

    • @johnadriaan8561
      @johnadriaan8561 3 роки тому +1

      @@alexflav23 Cool! So that means that you'll be replacing all of your installed first gen chargers, for free, when your next generation product that solves these issues is released? Unlike Jordan, most people install a car charger for years, if not decades. A long-term product that uses items that are "not there to last" is doomed to failure.

    • @hypervoltev
      @hypervoltev 3 роки тому +4

       @John Adriaan Everything we put out is comfortably tested to last 5 years, even with such "non ideal" components. In our whole career of many thousands of chargers, do you know we have only ever replaced one that actually failed? And that was because of a loose connector on a part we buy off the shelf. Sure there's room for much better, but it doesn't mean things are flimsy, they are in fact some of the best around by a country mile. There are other products even further along their vertical integration cycle no doubt(1 or 2 of them), but that won't be true for very long!

    I’d recommend not placing those grub screws on the paving slabs under your work area, particularly when near pebbles. One inadvertent flick with the cable and those screws could disappear instantly and be very hard to find. I speak from experience. I temporarily store small components in a dedicated screw cap container to keep the safe and easy to find later when required.

    This thing sounds like a really bad idea... that RasPi has a rather high base power consumption already (somewhere around 10W), so the fan will have to run even in our colder climates, which costs money, is a huge invitation for moisture buildup and for insects/ants/.. nesting inside. For an outdoors device you'd normally want IP54 or better. This thing will need cleaning out and checking for corrosion several times a year (except if you want to replace it regularly..)
    But hey, it's got a ton of LEDs, so it has to be good..
    (and I'm not even getting started about this being cloud connected and the vendor having access to my charging data and possibly others, since the RasPi becomes a regular part of your home network and can be used and abused for anything)
    Also, an EV charger should not need OTA capability, as there are no regular changes to the charging standards. Updating the firmware on a charger should be a once-every-few-years thing if it doesn't work right when you buy a new car, but that's all. Doing those updates manually via bluetooth is perfectly fine.
    This thing has a lot of shiny but useless features on its advertising brochure, but fails at the most basic requirements.

    • @hypervoltev
      @hypervoltev 3 роки тому

      Appreciate your comments! We are IP54 rated, and now going for full IP66 in our next version. Baseline consumption is a lot less than 10W fortunately, and there is no moisture build up or space for insects or ants to get in as you say. Firmware updates should never be manual, that's something we'll defend to our grave and one of the biggest problems with other products. OTA is quite crucial actually.
      It fortunately fails at none of the basic requirements at all, but granted it's hard to please everyone!

    • @ThePrawlin
      @ThePrawlin 3 роки тому

      @@hypervoltev I wouldn’t touch an EVSE with auto pushed OTA updates with a ten foot barge pole!....... Who wants suddenly changing behaviour without any warning or my express permission. OTA stream of new bugs provided for free. No way to revert back when it all goes tits up with an update. And please don’t tell me your software is so good it has no bugs..... All software ever produced has bugs. Thats a fact. Also, the fan is not a good feature, it’s negative and a downright liability. The fact that a fan is needed in such a device is indicative of a less than optimal design. The internal dissipation should be so minuscule such that a fan and/or case ventilation is simply not required. The only significant product heating should be when mounted in direct sun and/or high ambient. The components and design should be able to withstand that and maintain reliability in a well designed product. Peter.

      you are technically right, in terms of user experience for our users that don’t want to care about details, it’s worth seeing things a bit more holistically. Do people care about what kind of computing they get, or do they care about an effortless experience?

  • @robertbaird7001

    It needs a plug park. And a better way of storing the cord like a compact retractible air hose/extension cord like they have in workshops. Also if the plug was dropped in some dirt or got wet you would want some spray cleaner and a micro fiber cloth to clean it. These would be nice to be at hand in the unit, and could also be sold as consumables for extra revenue and would fit into the wasted space in the housing.

    Thinking of things like sea air corrosion etc, as we live 1 road back from the seafront in Blackpool so get the prevailing westerly winds blowing in off the Irish Sea. Although the front of the house is facing away from the sea, the windows do still get covered in sea spray during stormy weather.
