Give credit to the engineering staff for designing, re-designing the car to allow for such a quick gear box change. I worked in engineering for 25 years and the amount of work and brain power that went into this was enormous.
@@agontprevarator5214It does show that, no matter how fast a car is in endurance racing, quick pit stops make the difference between victory and defeat.
You're welcome. This is such an iconic moment, still often talked about, but was really nowhere available. I had to upload it. These "garage moments" are one of my favorite parts about Le Mans.
This was amazing to watch it as it happened and the Joest team did a spectacular job changing the rear end without nearly losing a lap. Any factory team going to LeMans needs to see this video
They not only raised the bar they broke it! From then on the new rule is that you must finish the race with the same gearbox case that you started with!
Imagin an average mechanic shop with a team that works on cars finishing jobs within an hour and how much business that shop would generate. I took my van to my local shop and it took them 10 days to complete the repairs and nothing major but a couple of sensors needed to be replaced.
I love the look on the Audi teams faces at the end. See American or British teams would be smiling dancing etc we did a change in under 5 minutes new record wow we just changed racing forever etc etc they’d be chanting it screaming about it popping Champagne you name it. What do the Germans do? Immediately hold a serious meeting right then and there where the swap took place looking over their stop watches asking why it took so long and where and why they got bogged down. Then talking about how to improve it so it never happens again and threatening to fire the guy if he takes 2.84 seconds longer like that ever again. Seriously tho not one smile or high five or pat on the back. They really did probably think they were slow. This is another example of how Audi changed racing forever especially the Le Mans 24 hour. The Le Mans timeline should go raced started 1923 didn’t run for several years during ww2 Mercedes had worst car wreck in history and Audi changed the Le Mans 24 hour and all racing especially endurance racing forever in 2000. They proved they could push hard all 24 hours like a sprint race instead of endurance and if something broke it would only take minutes to fix. They changed the game. This is why their road cars are the way they are this is why German cars are the best. Hopefully they never change and never forget that!
They tried nerfing the Audis as much as they could to make the LMP class more competitive. At that time, Audi were the only major manufacturer while the rest were privateers (Chrysler being the exception). By 2005, a combination of ballast weight and turbo restrictions made the R8 only slightly faster than the GT2 class in a straight line
Imagine *THE FACES OF LITERALLY EVERYONE ELSE THERE* . Imagine (as a driver) being said "Audi is on box for a gearbox swap, we're 8 laps down, PUSH, PUSH, PUSH!!!!", to later, just 4 or 5 minutes later answer to your team principal "HOW?! *THEY JUST CAME OUT FROM BOXES???!!!!* " Also: Watch that video with this OST from GRID, it really makes it even better xD
Exceedingly impressive, though one would think making a gearbox last the whole race would be easier than making the car so modular it might as well be Theseus' Audi.
Shit happens during a race that you can't plan for. the time made in weight-saving was probably more over 24h than the 7/8 mins wasted doing a gearbox change

Nah.. it look easy, just remove old gear box and put new one

The level of preparation, planning and engineering - they richly deserved their Le Mans wins.
"richey" is right my man, Imagine the money spent on the team and car.... Crazy
I watched this Live when it happened and it was amazing.
Also.
I REALLY miss Speedvision.
Trust me I miss Speedvision too.
Jp Kalishek I watched it too. Speed was a great channel for race fans
me too!

I also watched that live and was blown away....we miss you Speedvision
One of the best moments in racing history
All this talk about whether racing drivers are athletes; guess what? These mechanics are athletes as well.
Thank you for putting this on UA-cam. I have been looking for this clip for years.

Great from both the engineers who designed that car and the mecanics for actually doing it in 3 minutes
This moment got me HOOKED on endurance racing. Thanks for posting!
Every time I watch this video I am reminded of the pure creativity of the human spirit
00:27 Andrew Marriott's voice. Epic. Watched it live. Still chills even all these years later. -U10
I saw it live too. It's one of my FAVORITE racing memories!

2020 and still amazed.
2022 as well

Lol, ACO and FIA sees this and said, "That's cool, but we'll make it illegal for next year."

To be fair, it does go against what Endurance racing is. It's not really putting parts through 24 hours if you can change half the car in 5 minutes.
@@RacingAtHomeYep, it's a ship of Theseus problem

did they end up winning the race?
Yes
not that car though
The #8 car won the race. The #9 car (shown in the video) finished 2nd and the #7 car finished 3rd.

Things break for a thousand reasons out of your control even if you build the perfect car.
I think they banned the possibility of doing this the next year.
Lemans has the best mechanics in the world
Is that allowed back then?
Can anyone tell me the name of the car that passes by at 1:26?
It sounds exactly like the BMW V12 LMR, but that car only raced Le Mans in 1998 and 99.
@@lukaszpowalowski8342 There was one privately entered BMW V12 LM in that race, one of the 1998 cars in privateer hands, so it might well be that.
Amazing
Like Lego.
they know ho to design a car that can have it's gearbox changed in 5 minutes and road cars need 7 hours to change the clutch.
Incrível!
What? Impossible
So, 5 minutes of handwork, it cost a bargain! 🙈🙈🙈🙈
Even though it's amazing, thank god they banned this. If your gearbox can't last the whole race you should have to retire
I like the idea though of having to design a car so it's quick and easy to replace parts though
As a racing mechanic I'm all for being able to change parts quickly and easily.

...wouldn't it have been more time efficient to design a car that wouldn't need this?

If you are asking that question, then you don't understand endurance racing.
