Audi's engineers have been genial when designed the R8. It has redefined the Sportscar meaning not only due to its performance, but also thanks to the engineering approach. Before of the Audi R8 LMP1 it was unthinkable to change the gearbox and the whole rear axle in few minutes! It was impossible also for Formula 1 teams! Many rivals complained about this and ACO changed the rules. I don't agree with federation's response, because there was nothing wrong or illegal in this Audi peculiarity. You cannot penalize engineers and team because they've had a so brilliant idea! R8 has won a wide number of races because it was a wonderful car: fast, reliable, smart, a easy to manage. It could be considered as the 956/962 of the new millennium. Love it!
i would argue that the decision of banning gearbox changes was not completely without a good reason, not allowing to change the gearbox means that you have to build that thing to last 24 hours at peak revs and maximum power, Wich is nuts but i agree is not enough of a reason imo the better solution would be having 1 extra complete gearbox as a spare for both cars and spare gearbox parts too so if one of the cars bust its gearbox, it gets replaced quicky and then the busted gearbox have to be fixed in the case that the other car blows its gearbox too i would argue that its a good strategy for other parts like engine and suspension exept for tires and brakes
I think it was mostly because changing the whole rear axle is very, very expensive and most teams couldn't hold up economicaly, while Audi basically had unlimited budget for that kind of heavy, overkill repairs, and that is not fair
@@mickael_guitara you are going into Le Mans, one of the Top competitions in the world, you dont get into it with Spare change only, for that we got Lemons :v
F1 teams can do it as fast, if not faster. The reason they can't do it in F1 race(Besides regulations) is simply down to the race distance. F1 races only take 90 mins, so a 6 min gearbox change is going to ruin you in F1.
that's generally how all rule changes work. when you're so good at something that no one else can hope to match you then a rule get's made stopping you from doing that thing. the audi engineers must have treated themselves to the tallest pint of beer you've ever seen each time a rule got changed because of them.
This also happened in F1. The only time I remember happening was in 2005(don't mind my teen arse). Ferrari was winning too much, so in 2005, I believe FIA made it so you can't change tyres in the middle of the race, with the exception of changing weather and punctures. And it worked, with Fernando Alonso and Renault winning the 2005 season.

Yep. Changed the rules so that the gearbox casing could not be removed from the car (only the individual gears). Pressure from other teams is what saw the Audi factory team leave the race after 2002 (the last two victories for the R8 were in privateer hands). It's also why the ACO implemented BoP rules, adding larger restrictors (dropping power from 610hp in factory spec down to 520hp in 2005) and larger ballast
@@fw1421 I understand your objection but it must have been costly to engineer a modular rear end and the other teams simply didn't have the money perhaps. Uli Baretsky's diesel was pure genius

Everything does not look/sound same not even close. Coming hypercar class that replaces LMP1 brings even more variety.
Yeah rules were changed after this cause Audi dis this like 3 times and kinda gave advantage with new parts they knew what they were doing smart as hell
The gearbox is another word for the transmission or the part of the car that translates the high rpm low torque power directly from the engine into higher torque lower rpm to send to the wheels with your different gears. Nitrous is not allowed, but it isn't a magic boost like games make it out to be so its not really a big deal. Different teams ran turbo and NA set ups, the Audi was a 3.2L turbo V8, the Panoz a 6.0L naturally aspirated V8
There has alway's been an unfair advantage at one point or another through time. This applied method was thought up by Reinhold Joest. A few years later he came up with brake and rotor change that only took about 10 minutes or so. Reinhold was a master contingency planner. It was the same general principle. Teams alway's find loopholes in the rules and exploit them. Schnitzer BMW team found a loophole with the GTR M3 and they dropped a much more powerful V8 in the car that ended dominating it's class. Porsche cried fould as the argument was that the V8 wasn't a production run motor at that time. Audi had an unfair advantage in the 1990's with the all wheel drive Quattro. They were underpowered compared to the competition but made up for it big time with the quattro drive. Subsequently the rules changed the following year as they alway's are after such exploits occur. But Audi showed the world what domination is. As the continued to do a decade later with the R8 through the R18 E-tron Quattro. 13 wins in 15 years. They didn't change the transmission because of a transmission problem, they changed it because it was faster than switching out all the suspension components that were damaged when the tyre failed.

I think the whole idea that Audi has won le mans is just not legit, the transmission can’t last 24 hours, therefore your car is no good for a 24 hour endurance race, what’s left for a win?
The issue wasn't the transmission at all. The left rear suspension was damaged after the Michelin tyre failed. Changing the whole rear assembly including transmission is much quicker than replacing only the damaged suspension components.
