    I've seen this video numerous times and have a copy of it on a computer somewhere but it still really really freaks me out everytime I see it anywhere. I've grown up a motorsports fan so no stranger to speed, but the speed at which the scenery passes the car, and the speed that the road underneath passes, coupled with the fact that the car looks like a beast to drive and seems to want to rip your wrists off.....tight and heavy....with an accelerator so sensitive it'll put you in a wall before you even had time to realise there was a wall coming........this car is literally scary as fuck. Salute to anyone who drove this in anger, and straightjackets to anyone who drove it in anger at night. You crazy fuckers.

      not to be "that guy" but apparently the throttle pedal is actually very heavy, according to some guys whom have driven it and spoken with me about the experience, at least in modern perspective. 600bhp & lighter than an elise, i can't imagine what it was really like to drive. I don't think the steering is heavy on slower corners, heavy clutch & accelerator & massive turbo lag. I think driving one of these at night in the wet would test your mettle.

      It was beaten by the Porsche 919. The reason why this record lived such a long time is probably because the track is too dangerous for the fastest race car categories like F1, LMP1 or Indycar and so we don't see them compete on the Nordschleife anymore. I'm sorry but I think I might upset some people but this footage as brought back memories of just why I wanted too be a racing car driver when I was young boy, I mean come on i'd pay without a moments thinking too watch this on a sunday or any day even if I had to record it . I cannot be the only one who watches the start of an F1 race then wanders off around the house and garden and pops his/her head in too see whos leading the race and then comes in and sits down too watch the last couple of laps of what is in all reasons is a procession of cars that reach 200 MPH if we're lucky. Driving the cars like the one I've just watched took skill and bravery yes bravery or balls if you'll excuse the me........I want too see the driver struggling too maintain control at high speeds.........Murrey Walker said that the day road cars, i.e production, cars started too be made which could travel at 150-170 MPH then F1 Teams would have too produce race cars that could and would hit at least 230-240 mph on race day the fact that they haven't is one of the reasons F1 is dying a slow death right before our eyes.....when I read that they had got one over Bernie and made him sell up I'd never laughed so hard in my life. P.S Thanks for the upload or what ever yer call it truly breath taking thank you.

    Someone not into motorsport told me they must have fallen asleep through a 8 hour stint that it can´t be true. I just said that falling asleep where impossible. The cars kept them awake. No spring travel, no power steering, no driving aids at all and about 640 horsepower, and nearly 400 km/h on the mulsanne straight and bumpy corners, very less steering angle... It was impossible to fall asleep. Even they had to heel & toe the hole way around the circuit and allways they had to get that right.... So as a driver that would keep you alive. Not compareable to nowadays poshy driving........

    • @nickrichard8333

      Apparently none of these people here read much on the 917. Which was estimated to hit 240+. I remember Sam Posey article in Road & Track years ago. In 1970 he was with Ferrari on that occasion, and recollected that Rodriguez, Siffort, et al were remarking they could push it only so far, because of aero lift on the front, slightly losing steering grip/maximum brake efficiency. Hence there was more to pull out that flat 12.
      Hell, even the GT40 back in its heyday was topping 210+ on the Mulsanne.

    • @hertzwave8001

      @kyongslist 7 років тому +3

      my god, YOU are clearly the one who needs a thorough educating on the "917", as you clearly dont even realize from the get go how many variations there were of it. But since were discussing Le Mans, im going to assume you are mainly speaking of the initial 1969, first model car.... it never produced "aero lift" on the front, period. Thats simply incorrect, the car produced very poor results in 1969, it wasn't until the Kurzheck arrived in 1970 that the car attained its legendary reputation. The first version of the car was unstable at high speeds due to the lack of downforce at the rear of the car, the tail was far too long and lacking any sharp, traverse tail. It wasn't until they contracted other race teams that they realized (by virtue of someone noticing the entire car EXCEPT the rear tail was covered in dead bugs after a days driving, indicating no air traveling over the rear of the car, and thus the rear wheels not recieving proper levels of grip at high speed) the issue, and modified the bodywork accordingly. The 917K, sporting the shorter, more upswept tail, and the most well known version of the car easily, never was officially clocked at 240.... thats fact. And even if it did hit 240, the sacrifices they would have to make to lower the drag, would subsequently decrease downforce too, which would hurt there cornering speeds, effectively canceling out any benefit the higher top speed would have on the laps average speed. Moron

      It didn't. The original 962 was a single turbo to comply with IMSA regulations. The 956 had twin turbos. The other difference was that the 962 had the driver's feet being the front axle line, whereas the 956 was ahead of it. Rules mandated the use of the 962 chassis and they simply fitted the 956 engine to it.
      Besides, Group C was a fuel economy formula. So the sorts of outrageous claims made on the internet about how much power they produced and how fast they were in a straight line are frequently wrong and mostly there to impress the easily impressed...
      The 956 and 962 were both plenty fast in a straight line.

    246 what ? mph ? they couldnt , I think ? farther to the end of 80s , yes , they reached this speed , but in 1983 there was no need . Why 1983 ? I cant understand why 1983 not 1984 if the commentator speaks about the winning porsche that averaged 150 mph a lap LAST year that was 1993

      In 1983 it was 246 mph (396.3 km/h), but the fastest ever is still 255 mph (almost 410 km/h), which was done in the WM Peugeot P88 in 1988.
