Giving the Tribbles to the Klingons had massive consequences. The Klingons judged the Tribbles as an ecological menace. They considered the Tribbles mortal enemies of the Klingon Empire. The Klingons sent hundreds of Warriors to hunt down every Tribble. An Armada annihilated the Tribble home world.

KIRK: AN EXPLOSION, MR. SCOTT?! SCOTTY: Aye. Did ya not experience any turbulence while you were over there? KIRK: Well no, I was... buried among a pile of tribbles. And I could've sworn somebody was up there tossing more tribbles down on my head. Scotty, did you use the external sensors to scan for any... other activities near the station? SCOTTY: Aye captain, all we picked up right before the explosion was a tribble and a tricorder floating in space... WITH A BOMB LOCATED INSIDE THE TRIBBLE! KIRK: A BOMB... INSIDE THE TRIBBLE?! SPOCK: Fascinating. KIRK: Yes indeed, Mr. Spock. But... how did the bomb get inside a tribble? Could the Klingons... or ARNE DARVIN have had anything to do with it? Kirk at first gets upset at the thought of Scotty transporting the tribbles into space but, isn't sending them to the Klingons and even more terrible way of getting rid of them. You know that the Klingons killed and perhaps ate the creatures.
What I love about this part is that Kirk is getting increasingly agitated over getting the run around and he's ready to give a dressing down to someone until he hears what Scotty did that he can't help but laugh.
Imagine if the Klingons got the right to develop Sherman's planet , and the enterprise transported the tribbles there. They would have been like locusts on the crops.

Instead of a steady 1:1 24 frames every second the projector would flash the frames in sequence at the 3:2 ratio which translated to a 30 frame per second television scanned frame rate. All this was done mechanically by the projector. Today films (when actual film as opposed to video are used) are mostly scanned frame by frame and processed electronically to the television rate.

The only worse scenario would be the one in the animated series [pre-The Motion Picture] where "altered" tribbles in colonies explode into tens of hundreds of tribbles when fired upon.
It's like trapping a bunch of legless mice in a cage of hungry legless-mouse-hating lions and then laughing because you are so clever. It really taught those lions a lesson. I bet you they won't be happy again until they have destroyed the last legless mouse. It's genius. And funny too. Hilarious even.
Worf said that the last tribbles were eradicated at the end of the 23rd century. The Khitomer conference was in 2293, which places the Praxis explosion at 2292 or thereabouts. They were facing a famine in addition to environmental destruction on Q'onos.
I never liked that solution, knowing that the Klingons will kill them. Shame on Scotty and the rest for doing something that would hurt such a wonderful sweet fuzzy thing.

they are afraid of them... think of someone with arachnophobia and then have a room filled with spiders. yes they would kill as many as they could from a distance with phasers, but no Klingon would get up close and personal with them so having them flood the ship would most likely just have them abandon ship, possibly self destruct the ship in the process.
But.. but, the Klingons are just going to slaughter the Tribbles. Scotty should have beamed them into "energy only." Don't materialize them, just leave them in subspace. Anything is better than being stomped under a Klingon boot.

Without Gene Roddenbery's vision of Star Trek then this program would have only lasted for 1 season.

Transporting them to the klingons, genocide followed.
It would be inhumane to transport them into space but the Klingon surely killed all of them on the ship and then exterminated the Tribble homeworld.
