Kirk & Scotty after the fight with Klingons

- My new video with Scotty's best of! • Chief Engineer Montgom...
It's a scene from the famous episode "The trouble with Tribbles". After a bar-fight with Klingons Kirk is a bit angry and wants to know who started it. Of course, Scotty :) I love this conversation and the music in the background.
I do not own this, I do not profit from this video, all rights reserved, Paramount stuff etc.
Subtitles thanks to Chakoteya.net
The mixture of disappointment, disbelief and a hint of humor on Kirk's face upon realizing it was the insult to the ship and not him that started the fight is just _palpable._ I love it.
You are correct. They both pulled this off perfectly. Has to gone down as one of the most classic scenes from TOS.
Cuz he knows he would have started the fight to if they insulted the Enterprise in front of him.
Kirk expected and wanted it to be Chekov who started the fight because Kirk looked at him as something of a kid brother.

"I gave them a very good home, sir."
"WHERE?"
That's why we see it here: i.e. the entire series is supposed to be re-creations of the ship's record.
Insulting the Enterprise in front of Scotty is like insulting someone's kid in front of their parent.
You just don't mess with a guy who stormed the beaches on D-day.
It's like driving your Chevy through the glass into a Ford dealership showroom, jumping out and saying "get this junk out of my way"
Lmfao!!!!
“Laddie, doan’t ye think ye should... rephrase that?” And the Klingon comes back in Scottish accent “You’re right, I should.”
Corsair Carl It's worse!
Shatner is so beautifully wry in this scene. He's been unfairly maligned for being an overactor, but he's quietly hilarious and nuanced here.
As I recall, Shat’s background was as a theater player (alongside Christopher Plummer, no less!), which I could believe could involve aping your expressions and mannerisms somewhat so that people far back from the stage could make out what was going on. Such exaggeration would be considered overacting by tv and movie standards.
@@FS2K4Pilot today, yeah but back in the earlier days of TV and movies, a lot of the actors had that theater training
I so agree!
PERSONALLY I... Do NOT... See IT!!!
no, he earned the derision for his terrible overacting in a lot of scenes and his raging egomania behind the scenes…as great as he dan be, his hamming it up overshadowed those moments
What I've always loved about this scene is how every man in that lineup either knew or had a good idea of who started the fight. But not a single one said a word against Mr. Scott. Even after losing shore leave, even after being confined to quarters. And the crew is never depicted as having an antagonist relationship with Kirk. He's no Captain Bligh that they had to form a united front against. Even under a captain generally regarded as good and fair, no man was willing to sell Scott out for their own benefit.
Helps that they all knew the punishments would be *Relatively* minor. Klingon infested station would be a killjoy and a pissing contest the whole way through. I'd say a fair number of them wouldn't mind catching up on reading anyway.
It's one of my favorite Trek scenes too, because it drives home the intense camaraderie all the crew shared, from Kirk and the bridge officers on down. Roddenberry showed how a diverse group of people could act as a team, a family, to support each other and accomplish truly amazing things.
@@singletona082 most of them were also either present for the klingon insults, or were close enough by to catch the gist of what was said. Everyone was ready to knock a few Klingon brain cells loose, and I can't say I blame them.
@@naverilllang Plus I'd say it's a sort of given unviersal. Nobody talks shit about your boat. Nobody. Especially a bunch of ratty klingons.
Better still, while Kirk was clearly taking a hit to his ego when Scotty didn't defend his honor, but the Enterprise's honor... he absolutely understood and agreed, you don't insult the Enterprise and get away with it. Basically a case of "understandable, but rules are rules so technically I have to punish you". Also, the entire crew refusing to sell out Scotty, even to Kirk who is fair and understanding, is awesome. The crew has loyalty on every level, and they'd rather all be punished in solidarity than snitch on one of their own. Great scene.
The look on Kirk was priceless. Part of it was standard disciplinary, part of it was being offended that Scotty didn't fight the Klingon in Kirk's name, while part of it was thinking "Those bastards insulted my silver lady?"
This guy gets it.
Kirk knew Scotty wanted to hide away reading tech manuals. He's the one who forced him into shore leave in the first place. Kirk's pride may be hurt, but he loves the ship too, so a slap on the wrist it is.
@@billlupin8345 Only Shatner and Doohan could turn a slap on the wrist into a 3 minute drama performance.
U damn right
Hey you don't fuck with Scotty or the Enterprise. Both are iconic
Shatner was masterful at reflecting multiple thoughts in his facial reaction. Wonderful case in point: The Twilight Zone episode, "Terror at 20,000 Feet." The subtle and swift shifts of nuance were amazing and so communicative of the character.
Say what you will about Shatner's acting, but he nailed this scene. So did Doohan. One of the best scenes ever.
Never been a better captain....NEVER.
So do I ! He absolutely nailed Kirk from episode 1.
So fricking great!

Shatner gets a bad rap because it's fashionable to do so.

From my favorite TOS episode, as a cub I found it hilarious.
Chekov's smile while he says, "I don't know sir." Definitely says, "I know sir, just not telling."
I love it.
Exactly ! That's what's missing from every so-called Trek after TOS -- SUBTEXT ! Starting with TNG, none of the writers understand how to write for characters using subtext.
I love this scene from "The Trouble with Tribbles." The disciplinary action Kirk gives Scotty (being restricted to quarters) made the engineer jump for joy because he could read his technical journals. Earlier in this episode, Kirk sees Scotty at a computer monitor. Kirk: "Reading another technical journal, Scotty? Don't you ever relax?" Scotty: "But Captain, I AM relaxing." The expression Kirk gives his engineer is classic!
You know the person who wrote that line knows an engineer.
They had the trouble with Tribles, and we have the trouble with illegal migrants
Both are as prolific! lol
@khankrum1 cool story lady
I used that scene of him "relaxing" to explain to a group of students what a software/computer/game engineer really was. Always learning.
@@IHateUA-camHandles615 Always on the lookout for a better way to do things.
Scotty looks so pleased with himself when he tells him why he fought the Klingons.
"YES sir!" *stands taller*
"Well sir. This was a matter of pride!"
It's so great XD. He looks guilty at first, but when he explains his reasons, he doesn't regret anything.
Well, Kirk can fight for himself, but the Enterprise has trouble with hand to hand combat.
Kirk knows he'd have done the same damn thing.
@@HariSeldon913 For some reason this image of Klingons punching the Enterprise hull appeared in my head. Excelsior asking don't you feel that and Enterprise going "What the fleas? Soon they'll tire out. Besides, I can't do anything without causing an Intergalactic incident."
I love Kirk's face at the end. Shatner at his finest. It's a mix of feeling inadequate, and "Well, what can you do. Scotty's gonna Scot."
And the Enterprise is only as good as her chief engineer, so you best let him keep up to date on his tech.
With scotch
I think he was also thinking that he might have done the same thing if he were there. That's why he didn't come down as hard on them.
@@strikerdelta Scotty's just a big hearted nerd isn't he? But go out of his way if he's been drinking scotch and you insult the Enterprise.
the enterprise was my first ship
That was actually some of Shatner's best acting in the series. Just little inflection changes and facial expressions make the whole thing. Doohan's his typical goofy, loveable self as Scotty there, but Kirk is great.
Shatner was so subtle in his performance as Kirk that he achieved the effects he wanted without most of the audience being aware of what he was doing. Not only in the tiny adjustments of his facial expression, but in the inflections of his voice.
Wonderful actor.
@@kitcat7538 Completely agree. Total commitment to the character from episode 1.
I hadn't realised until watching this just now that Kirk realises _why_ Scotty started the fight several lines before he actually asks about it.

This is why Star Trek is so timeless - good writing, good acting and good fun.
And this is why neo-Trek is so bad.
Very few people highlight the 'fun'. I agree, it was a big part of why the show is still loved by people around the world 50+ years later.

...Aye...!
The Enterprise elicits more loyalty than Captain Kirk. The look on Shatner’s face shows both the disappointment personally and the pride in their ship.
Never insult ANY sailor's ship. It may be a broken down old rustbucket to you, but to them, it is their pride and joy, and even possibly their home.
Captain, "Did they insult me?"
Chief Engineer, "Yes Sir, they did. We can all take personal insults. But they insulted the ship! Sir! That's a matter of pride!"
Especially if said sailor is chief engineer of said ship.
Don't forget a ship is more than a home. She's also a lady and you never insult a woman.

You can just feel the emotions that Scotty conveys when he says "They called the Enterprise a 'garbage scow'!". Like you can feel how much pride he has in his ship. Any engineer/shipwright would feel utterly insulted at having their pride and joy's name be besmirched.
Actually that was a mistake in the lines.
"KORAX: Of course, I'd say that Captain Kirk deserves his ship. We like the Enterprise. We, we really do. That sagging old rust bucket is designed like a garbage scow. Half the quadrant knows it. That's why they're learning to speak Klingonese.

SCOTT: Laddie, don't you think you should rephrase that?
KORAX: You're right, I should. I didn't mean to say that the Enterprise should be hauling garbage. I meant to say that it should be hauled away as garbage."

Even if it was an error in the script.
@@carminemurray6624 Well, to be fair, they still called it a garbage scow initially. Sure, they didn't add in the detail of the rephrasing of the insult, but they still said it regardless, so the scene is still correct for the most part.

That they keep feeding off the original series tells us something. The crossover was pretty good though :-)
How can anyone not Love Scotty?! To the 12 dislikes (as of this writing), this charming and brilliant actor is also a war hero. Wounded at the Normandy invasion, loosing a finger. He risked his life to make the world a better place and then became an actor. He helped make my and so many others childhoods happier. He has been a positive influence for so many in the technical fields inspiring them to excellence. and people claim Shatner was a bad actor.
Really good observation!
😅😅😅!!!
The whole technical journal thing was modelled after James Doohan in real life. He read technical journals for relaxation and the writers decided to put that in the script.
And Doohan was hardly unique. As a engineering geek all my life, I could easily see myself saying the same thing in that situation.
When Scotty appeared in TNG and reminisces about his Enterprise Picard offers him some technical manuals to help his transition to the new Enterprise. Scotty of course refused, being not a raw recruit.

Shatner's comic timing really showed in this scene brilliantly as did Doohan's
The entire episode really put Shatner's hamminess to great use. His insults to Barris, the storage compartment scene, at the end when he is trying to find out where Scotty sent the Tribbles and yells "WHERE?" in exasperation. He really made the most of his lines. Terrific scene (written by David Gerrold) that shows 'Star Trek' was about CHARACTER, not just aliens and special effects. And I love how some of the lines keep it real ("Is this off the record?" "No, this is not off the record!")
Special effects seem to take the main stage these days. Star Trek had character and characters. Usually had an interesting story line, too. Too much techno babble with the TNG series. The most technical TOS ever got was, "Mr. Scott, try inverse phasing".

It was always impressive that the writers and Shatner could pull off allowing Kirk to be a little vulnerable at times. This scene allows Kirk to be a little insulted that Scotty thought of the ship first rather than Kirk. But Kirk never needs to resort to being mad and secretly finds the whole thing humorous. All the while he remains comfortable and in absolute control of himself and his command. Lots of subtle layers Shatner displays masterfully in this scene.
Well said krosny===that is why the original series could never be topped---the big three actors along with supporting cast were so dead on with acting.
Well said as well Jaim Haas. Shatner as Kirk was a master at simultaneously mixing multiple layers of personality in subtle degrees as the scenes called for. In Balance of Terror, for example, the last scene where Kirk consoles the young lady who lost her fiance during the battle, he is able to be consoling and nurturing while fully displaying his sense of command, authority and overall just being a really cool guy. A superb master of his craft as were Nimoy and Kelley.
Troubble with Tribbles ought to be my favourite episode of Star Trek OS, and this to be one of the best scenes. I laughed so much as Kirk says "Scotty" in that low tone, there's such a surprise and shock in his voice.

That was a hilarious scene. Poor Kirk, playing second fiddle to his ship, LOL. Then again, I doubt he was TOO surprised ...
No, it's SCOTTY'S ship. Kirk just runs it based off of what Scotty can give him, usually "all she's got!".
@Kathrina I don't think you get it sweetie. Kirk may be in command, but a ship is only as good as it's chief engineer.
@@strikerdelta Remember the scene from Star Trek TNG Relics between Scotty and Geordi. He was devastated when Geordi told him he would tell Capt. Picard exactly how far they could "push the engines". Scotty told him you always hold a little back, so they think you're a miracle worker!
Nope. As hurt as his pride may be Kirk is a Captain. And, like any other crewman, along with countless generations of sailors before them, insulting "my ship" is far worse.
"I'm a rambler, I'm a roamer, a freeman, a comber. The ship is my wife and the sea is my life; the wind, and the water, and the sky. Ahhh."
Nah. Kirk was secretly cheering Scotty. If he had been there, HE would have started the fight himself. All for our Silver lady, Enterprise!
Kirk seems to be thinking, "Thank you, Scotty, for showing what a high opinion you have of your captain."
It's a matter of priorities for him. Enterprise - 1st, Capt. Kirk - 2nd, maybe.
The original series will never die. So special.
I love how Kirk's face goes from inquisitive captain to "why did I even ask" the longer scotty went on.
A couple of my friends and I did this scene for our high school acting class back in the 70's. I played Kirk. What fun!
This is so well done. I have to say, Kirk and Scott really have their comic timing down pat in this scene. I love it.
The humour in Star trek is so underrated and has never really been emulated as well,. not corny or cheesy, jsut very well written
The comedy in TOS is damn fine. And this was one of the best. The near pride in Kirk thinking that his engineer defended his honor, only to be disappointed it was because the ship was insulted. And he couldn't hid it lol.
Genius. This show was the best in Trek for it IMO.
Regarded as one of the best episodes, Kirk looks tired and pensive all through, but he never is actually dropping the ball. He starts to perk up just when needed; masterful writing and acting having the Captain know when to show his authority or just relax and go with the flow. Interesting comment made on the making of Hunt for Red October, when they got to ride on a US submarine for the making. The captain was very relaxed and just oozed authority and when orders had to be given, he gave them calmly and they noted hes the sort of guy you would follow into hell and not question him. Shatner portrays kirk as both a strong high endurance leader and also accessible but ready for a bit of biffo when needed.
Very well observed, thanks
One of the hardest things for a good officer to learn is to just expect people to obey his commands and not expect it to be a battle of wills each time. It's partly about having the confidence in their own abilities but also to trust the professionalism of the troops they've been entrusted to command.
This is one my favorite scenes in the entire series.
Scotty has it right. I never understood how, "restricted to quarters" was a punishment. One can lay about doing nothing. Some time off work. It is a reward.
You don't think he might have been thinking "if I get in a fight with the Klingons and disobey the captain's orders, I'll be restricted to quarters with nothing to do but ... but read technical journals! OK what's the downside?"
@@tenhirankei I'm saying that is exactly what he thought. He is pleased with the restriction.
I don't think it was really meant to be. Scotty was taking insult after insult, tried to stop somebody else from making the first punch, and was honestly doing the best he could. But he's only human, and he's going to hit a snapping point. Especially when the Klingons insulted not only their Captain, but their ship. Plus, Scotty was reading the technical journals earlier for fun. I don't think Kirk was actually going to punish Scotty, but seeing as it was on the record he had to say /something/ that might be seen as a punishment to some.
@@EchoFrost13 Hummmm. So Captain Kirk was engaged in a deception on official Star Fleet records?
@@soslothful I wouldn't really say deception. He still is giving Scotty a mild punishment, but it's more of a not-so-serious, don't-do-this-again sort of deal. He confined everybody else to their quarters until he found out who started the fight, so why wouldn't he administer the same punishment to someone who was clearly provoked into starting a fight?
no one involved with star trek nowadays could write - let alone *act* in - anything anywhere NEARLY as smart or as hilariously funny as this. truly a classic scene. thanks for uploading this.

"...Sir...Is this off the record?" "NO this is not off the record!" Wow I love this show.
I love Scotty's expression at 2:47. He looks incredibly pleased with himself.
0:39 - “I don’t know, sir.”
_”I.. don’t.. know, sir.”_
Shatner nailed that. 😆
This is one of the great exchanges I remember from watching Star Trek in syndication. 1970 or so.
Their voices are amazing, really full-hearted voices/accents.
can we just acknowledge how 100% in love with the Enterprise Scotty is
and how 100% done Kirk is with his life
Scotty's loyalty to the Enterprise is proof that they had the right man for the job. In the episode "Let This Be The Last Battlefield" Scotty's loyalty to Kirk & the chain of command that prompted him to play his own part to initiate the Enterprise self-destruct sequence (he was numb, in shock, knowing what he was doing...but he did it) is proof that he's right man for the position. That job, that position, was the perfect match for that man.
What a scene! One of my favorites! For once Kirk gets humbled, then again when he disciplines Scotty, and Scotty is delighted! A look at Kirk's stance and face shows he has been truly put in his place! 🤣🤣🤣👍👍👏
I got the thought that at that point, Kirk was thinking, "Why me?!"
..i still recall this episode from when i was a child watching the reruns in the 70's!
Things that stand the test of time are the the truly great things.
Much thanks to the folks that made Star Trek..in front of and behind the scenes.
📽🤩❤
This show never gets old......I could watch reruns forever........... : D. Live long and prosper!
Classic scene in a classic Star Trek episode!!!
"THEY CALLED THE ENTERPRISE A GARBAGE SCOW! Sir..." Scotty's expression 😂😂😂
Brilliant!
These guys are always brilliant!
I own all of this on DVD and I still watch it everynight on ICON!
Biggest LOL ever! This was always my favourite episode of all the Star Trek episodes.
It was a really good episode! So funny!
Kirk: Who threw the first punch?
Scotty: Ummm... I did.
They compared you to a Denivian slime devil!
Kirk: And that's when you hit the Klingon.
Scotty: No.
Kirk: No? (So you won't fight for me, but you'll fight for the enterprise... ok then.)
Lol
I love how he blamed Chekov without even asking if he did it or not. And I also loved how they did not snitch on Scott but when it comes to Scott always remember you can talk shit about the captain don't talk shit about the ship the Enterprise.
Seeing how great this scene is makes me wish they’d made more comedic episodes.
They did.
@@MXB2001Which other original series episodes have comedy running consistently all the way through them like this one? Most episodes have comedic moments in them, but I can’t think of any other episodes so consistently comedic and light in tone throughout as this one.
They used comedy sparingly, but very effectively.
Star Trek was and is a fantastic vision for the future. Way ahead of its time. It was so well written and thoughtful.
2:32 "They called the enterprise a garbage scow" That's the majour insult for Scotty :D That's true today in many Navies, you never insult their ship. IN some ways, Kirk should be proud that one of his Officers did this action defending the Ship's honour. A Captain is only as good as their crew and ship.
Well stated!!
Jimmy Doohan! We were right to venerate you so! Good man. Good actor. Good legacy, worthy of emulation. Mad respect for the man that inspired so many real life engineers around the world!
Still, I love the way Scotty looks like a kid with his hand in the cookie jar.
The best scene in the best episode of the whole OS. James Doohan actually did read technical journals for his own edification. He could also do any accent that you wanted, but, unfortunately, got type cast as Scottish as a result of the original series. I am so glad for actors like him and Nichelle Nichols, Walter Koenig, and George Takei that the movies happened and made them rich for what they had helped to create.
The Doomsday Machine was the best episode imo.
Recall watching this show as a child. Great Times!
Trivia: Trouble with Tribbles became a Trek favorite. This was writer David Gerald's first of many professional work. As a teenager, I got his autograph at a Star Trek Con in 1976, I gushed "I never met a real live writer before". To which he responded, "Neither did I. How does it feel?" XD
The humanity and heart of star trek at it's best
It's weird when Kirk is the most mature, responsible person in the room.
I dunno. O'Brian had his moments.
I’ve probably seen this episode at least a few dozen times over the years. But this scene still cracks me up every time. This was a classic example of the pride and love Scotty had for his ship. He wouldn’t fight the klingons because the insulted his captain. But he beat the hell out of them because they insulted his ship. He probably would have fought all of them even if he was all alone and didn’t have any of his crewmates to back him up. Scotty may have been able to ignore insults about other things. But he wouldn’t listen to one word of anyone disrespecting his ship. Kirk’s reputation as a great captain wouldn’t be anywhere near what it was if he didn’t have Scotty working his magic with the ship.
RIP James Doohan. The best engineer ever.
One of the best for sure.
Another really good Scott moment is when he tells the diplomat he won't lower the screens....When Scott tells u to go F yourself it's a good day.
jaim haas Yes, that was an excellent scene. no one messes with Scotty!
Jen are you an old Trek fan? Did u grow up with it or are you a more recent fan?
@@jaimhaas5170 I'm an old Star Trek fan. Beats the newer ones
This is classic! Very thankful to be able to watch this today. I've always enjoyed that scene; a great snapshot of what made the original show so good, with the unmatchable chemistry between the cast.
Kirk still had to discipline them, but you could tell he wasn't really angry with them. He seemed more bemused than anything.
Exactly. This was Shatner's acting choice, and a brilliant one. Exactly the right tone.
Compare genuine human moments like this to the dull, robotic performances on Discovery. I say let them keep all their lens flairing special effects, I'll take this.
The thing about this writing is that you can use your imagination and feel the power of that ship going into warp....Now with those effects the writing is hardly worth listening to.
The originals were amazing, spock is one of the best characters ever
i watched a little of discovery i say it sucked
Discovery is a steaming pile of shit.
@@dexterdog62 Please excuse my lack of awareness, what is Discovery??
I love ST and have since I first saw it in the late 60's, all be it in Black and White.
I know of the original as shown here plus TNG, DSN and Voyager plus the films I think. So what is it I am missing or is this so new that Australia can't afford it yet.
Cheers from John.
After all these years, still so cute!
Kirk just there like, “So you didn’t stick up for me. Just the ship? Glad to know you care Scotty.”
Many years on, and I still remember that scene almost word for word - and can quote Scotty complete with the accent. Out in western Canada, we were all very proud of Jimmy Doohan, who was not only from Vancouver, B.C., but had landed in the first wave of Canadian troops to hit Juno Beach on D-Day, being wounded six (if memory is correct) times by machine gun fire while assaulting the German strong points. He was taken to hospital (one of the lucky survivors of that first wave) and afterwards was given a medical discharge by the Canadian Army. Which he wasn't having, so he turned around and volunteered to join the Royal Canadian Air Force, where the he became a pilot and flew as an artillery spotter for the rest of WWII. So Scotty's history demonstrated that he really had gone out and stood in harms' way voluntarily and more than once. Just being a survivor of the first wave to land on Juno Beach was kind of extraordinary. Volunteering as a pilot in the RCAF was another. His persona as being a bit of a "bad a**" was not entirely fiction!
"You threw the first punch."
"Chekov wanted to, but I held him back."
_"You_ held...!? Why did Chekov want to start a fight?"
"The Klingons, uh... Is this off the record?"
"No! This is not off the record!"
XD
I'm surprised Kirk sounded as disappointed in the reasoning as he did. After all, it's been established that Kirk loved the Enterprise as much as Scotty did.
That's what I was thinking. "Insult me, but don't insult my wife."
I took it that he just wished someone had stood up for HIS pride.
@@KutWrite Chekov did tho
@@kahlernygard809: Just not with his fists.
Kirk may have loved the Little E as much as Scotty, but nowhere near as much as Shattner loved Shattner.
