- The Enterprise crew discovers a parallel world where the United States lost a nuclear war to Communist China. Centuries later, the decedents of the Americans cherish the documents of their ancient heritage, but have forgotten their meaning. Kirk explains it to them.
My grandfather would sometimes get irritated at Star Trek and make us go to bed early which was quite upsetting to three little boys who had lost their mom two years earlier.
Then one night we were watching this episode when grandpa walked in.
He listened to it and after that he never made us miss it again.
good science fiction makes you think. shatner's delivery is usually irritating. imagine that voice ordering a pizza, bleah. but for a speech like this? no, it is perfect.
Written with a pride never seen before or since. WE THE PEOPLE

People like to laugh at Shatner's acting, but at moments like this I only see a great performer delivering a great moment as it should be done.

A visibly emotional Shatner confessed to Sir Patrick Stewart that for years he felt ridiculed and embarrassed by criticisms of the show and his performance in particular. It was only after he saw the gravitas and majesty Stewart brought to the Captain’s chair that he fully grasped the importance of the role and the show.

I wonder why so many people only see it as a USA patriotic speech and leave it at that. I'm not from the US and find it very moving. Yes, is a product of its time, being literally Kirk preaching the US constitution but the essence of the message, that freedom and liberty should be for all people holds true to this day and for the future as long as there is people anywhere. Which in turn is how I see this scene and the whole of all good old media, the meaning behind it is what matters not the literal sense.
I can say things that might get you arrested if you said them in your country.

@@yourhuckleberry6757 I agree that the US has a level of freedom and liberties above the rest of the world. But we are not that far off, specially when you look at the foundation of our countries. Just to give you an example, one of the articles of our constitution states that the private activities of men that don't affect moral or public order, and don't harm third parties, are exempt from authorities. And I can definitely asure you that we have freedom of the press. By the way, I don't intend to make a comparison one-to-one with the US and say we are exactly the same. What I'm saying is that Kirk's speech can be taken in a much broader sense, even if it's specific to fit the US's worldview. I just find it horrible to take it as an imperialist worldview, when the message fits many worldviews.
When was young, this speech made me think...now that I am older, I weep. one of the best in Trek, hands down.

No. Not at all.
Liberty is the latitude you are accorded within a certain framework of constraints.
Freedom has no artificial constraints imposed.
And this is why Liberty is a greater concept than Freedom.
As for what the essence of the word means, it helps to look into its Latin roots. Consider the abbreviation for the British Pound: £. And in American English, the word pound is abbreviated 'lb'. Both come from the Latin 'libre'. Same with the zodiac sign Libra. All of those words, along with the word 'liberty' are rooted in that Latin concept of 'libre'. The word refers to a BALANCE. These are scales where one thing is put onto one side, and it is balanced by another thing onto the other side.
Well with liberty, what is placed on one side of the scales is 'freedom', and this is balanced by 'constraints to freedom' on the other side of the scale. Inherent in the word 'liberty' is "What are the proper limits to personal freedom?"
Put another way:
Liberty is Freedom that has been tempered by Justice.
Look at that swagger and charm Kirk has. What an amazing actor he is. The way he walks, talks and enunciates the words breathed so much life into the Constitution and you felt a connect with him.
This and "Risk is our business"..are the two best Kirk speeches.

And A Taste of Armageddon, the horrors of war speech is applicable in today's world of drone combat.
Perhaps ironically for two of the not-so-great episodes. The Taste of Armageddon and Mirror, Mirror speeches are probably the best combination of great episode and great speech.
Always like the "I will not kill today" speech from "A Taste of Armageddon".
One of Kirks great moments. I give the ending of Mirror Mirror a slight edge, another great speech to bearded Spock.

It’s even funnier because Shatner is Canadian.
In the case of Star Trek, "Constitution" class pays homage to the Constitution of the Federation, as in the United Federation of Planets, not of the United States. But of course, that's a thin distinction since the show was an American show during the time of the cold war, and obviously words like "United" and "Constitution" weren't chosen by accident.
This speak is especially relevant today and should be reverberated to everyone "WE THE PEOPLE...", "MUST BE APPLIED TO EVERYONE..."
He just kept talking in one long incredibly unbroken sentence, moving from topic to topic, so that no one else had a chance to interrupt-it was really quite hypnotic.

He does... And at 2:25 ...Spok tries to get a word in and Kirk talks over him. That's the only time I've seen that in Star Trek - can quite clearly see Leonard Nimoy either recoil in irritation - or- realise it wasn't his line - but I'm guessing he was supposed to have a line there and Kirk carried straight on to close the scene. ...Since Spok says nothing more it would be a bit strange for him to jump in with a line he never had there.
It's hard to make out but I think Nimoy says "doctor" - McCoy is looking at Spok like he expects a line. ...And only reluctantly returns to look at Kirk. To my eye, I think Shatner just cut a bit of dialogue there on the spot between Spok and McCoy - to the irritation of both, the way they rather non-commitedly leave the scene says as much to me, like they didn't expect that take to get accepted... But Shatner carries on regardless... Like a proper prima donna. ...Aye, well, he is the lead afterall.

i get tears in my eyes every time I see this. Especially at the end where you see Old Glory, worn and tattered, but still there. But Captain Kirk's words--even more than 50 years later, they still resound.

I show this video every year in college ethics class I teach. I do so as a part of an exercise I do regarding things in your past that formed your ethical core. This formed mine as an atty. When I was a gov. atty., I tell my class, I was asked so many times to assert legal positions that treated people differently, usually based on sexual identification. I always remember Kirk's speech. I then ask the class to tell me a story about what in their past helped form their ethical core. It's always a great exercise.

Did your students often bring up the farcical irony of these words being said to the backdrop of slavery and genocide? The more important lesson isn't whether or not we choose to treat others equally but that often we tend to falsely fulfill ideals like equality by moving the goalpost as to what makes someone an "other". In cases like this, high minded ideals become an armor of false righteousness instead of a tool of honest evaluation.
@@markuyehara7880 All depends on the lens through which you view the ideal. The Preamble says "....In order to form a more perfect union...." It doesn't say "in order to form a perfect union." Perfect is not possible, especially in a system run by _people._ People with flaws and agendas. People with parochial interests. What matters here is the American _Idea._ That WE have the ultimate power to shape our destiny - that our public officials have no power over us that WE didn't consent to. That if our leaders don't measure up to that ideal, WE have the power to vote them out. Name another place where _the people_ have that power over their government. The fact that we don't exercise it is a product of a complete lack of education on how this system is designed to work. We haven't taught civics for over two generations now. That might be by design - after all, the last thing our politicians want is an educated populace. It's still up to us, in the final analysis. We didn't inherit this American Ideal; it's not a birthright, it has to be fought for and defended by every succeeding generation or else it fails.
There's lots of examples of America not living up to its ideals; there's just as many examples of America wising up and getting past its own contradictions. If our system fails, it's 100% on We The People. WE were given the ultimate power over our public servants. There's no place else to turn to; can't blame the other party, can't blame our "rulers." Not when the Constitution gave _the people_ the freedom and power to choose who governs them. If there's a problem with this in the 21st Century, it's that we seem to _want_ to be ruled, because we don't want to bear the responsibility for being engaged in public affairs. So much easier to blame someone else than to blame ourselves for our shortcomings. None of this has to do with the failings of Constitutional government; if it fails, it fails because We The People failed to uphold our end of the bargain.

I have been watching Star Trek remastered on Amazon, and I can't remember ever seeing this episode before. It was very patriotic & inspirational, and yes, a nice salute from Captain Kirk himself!
Saw it when it first aired, and this episode was the one that hooked me on _Star Trek_ for good. Science fiction that made you think. The irony here is that this was a speech worthy of a statesman, given by a Canadian actor about America.
This show had such an inspiring message.

@@JohnAnderson-jy2js Actually, "Where No Man Has Gone Before" was created as the first ever 'second' pilot only after Lucille Ball (head of the Desilu studio where the series was filmed) lobbied NBC network executives to give the show another chance after they dismissed the original pilot "The Cage" as "too cerebral" for and 'action/adventure' TV series.
Interestingly, The Big Bang Theory was also sold on a second pilot. The first pilot was said to be atrocious. They only kept the two leads.

This episode gets a lot of criticism but I loved it as a kid and still do.
Yeah Kirk really told it like it is. He would be a great history teacher too. Too bad more people today don't believe and talk like Kirk did. This country was founded on God! I always like this episode. God bless America and everyone!

So many people hear what they want from this speech...the meaning muddled over time, the words spoken but...their meaning is lost. So quick to label, so quick to judge. "Can you tell if someone is evil just by looking at them!?"

Not just for people who agree to one way of life, but for all to live their own lives, for all to have what is promised, not just for those deemed worthy.

Further more, I think JJ Abrams and I saw 2 different Star Trek's
Abrams did the same thing that the first ST films did and exactly what Nimoy pointed out in his interviews: they turned Star Trek into an action fest with fancy fx. Not what ST:TOS was about.
It's amazing how certain meanings of symbols and ideals are changed and manipulated today to the point where they've lost their true meaning.

What Kirk is saying that the best, the only acceptable, form of government for people who would be free is the republic. A nation of Law.
That document, the E Plabnista, is not a permission slip granting permission for citizens to do or have certain things, but a cage constraining government. This was always the difference between the yangs and the comms, whether they be found in Asia, in America or among the stars. Those to whom the individual and his rights are sacred, and those to whom the individual does not exist except as an abstract representation.
Yangs, who view government as a necessary evil, and comms, who view gov't as the source of all good. Yangs who view government as an impediment to prosperity, and comms who view government as the solution to all problems.
The Law, as a check on the ambitions of those who lust for power over others, who lust to "do good", to fundamentally transform the world to match their vision of it. The Law, limiting government to its proper role of protecting the rights of the individual.

God, that twist felt like taking crazy pills they really put suspension of disbelief to the test with this one and its made even worth by the fact that they stated, that this type of parallel evolution of symbols doesn't really happen about 2 episodes earlier so we cant even tell our self this is just the kind of thing that happens in the star trek universe.
From IMDB: 'During the final scene on the planet, Kirk, Spock, and McCoy are standing together before they leave. During a pause in one of Shatner's lines, Nimoy starts saying something on top of Shatner, then abruptly stops. The camera keeps rolling and you can see Nimoy's eyes roll over as he realizes his mistake.'
Purportedly this is due to the line that Shatner delivers at that moment actually meant to have been Nimoy's. Furthermore you can see DeForest looking at Nimoy, then casting a perplexed look over at Shatner.

The original Star Trek was the greatest of all time. All other spinoffs never reached the level of patriotism and inspirational vision of the future.
The world needs more Kirks.

2:25 Shatner steals Nimoy line, Nimoy rolls his eyes at him. Watch it again and look at how Deforest was ready to interact with Nimoy, but he got surprised when The Shatner(tm) stole his line. What surprises me is that even then, Deforest managed to pretend nothing happened (besides a strange WTF blink) and quickly moved his head back to Shatner, so the shot could continue.

Wow... Goosebumps... Truly truly amazing when they weren't afraid to lead and show the way with our words and flag. "It must apply to everyone"... is so epic. It doesn't matter that it came from the USA or the American flag but justice, equality and liberty apply to all. I just hope they can continue to shine the beacon that America is and have others too shine their own beacons as well
