Just wanna say that I've been looking for about 3 days for an easy-to-do root tutorial without any luck. Every other one was plagued with people freaking out that something didnt work right. Thank you so much Reverend...u are truly a man of GOD.. lol subscribed and "thumbed" up..cant wait for ur next vids!!!
THANK YOU!!!! I've been driving myself crazy trying to figure this out. No one explained this as clearly as you. I had an idea of what I needed but most didn't explain just what unlocking would do. Great tutorial.
Fantastic guide. Nice to see an easy 1-click application rather than having to use the ADB command line interface I had to use when unlocking and rooting my HTC Sensation. Viva La Nexus 7!
Wow, you made this so easy. I have to admit my n7 was also reluctant to change. Hung up in the rebooting dialog of the rooting sequence. However, a manual reboot of the device and a restart of the rooting sequence finished without any more complications. Thank you for taking the time to make this video. Definitely subscribing to see more.
Well after multiple try and rooting attempts, I believe I successfully unlocked and rooted my Nexus 7. Scared to death during all the freezes. Now just waiting for an OTG cable to arrive. Cool stuff!
This is my first Android, and first time of unlocking and rooting anything. I followed these steps , and it was easy. I saved a back up, and that takes a little while. Now have to figure out how to get my F.F.3 game back. Thanks very much.
Very nice video. One shortcut you can think of adding is when you install the drivers you can "disable" Nexus 7 in device manager and then the ADB device works without a hitch. No messing around needed.
Awesome! I had to manually install the Samsung Drivers because I was getting hung up using Windows 8, which would not allow installation of unsigned ADB drivers, but after this, everything went exactly as you showed in your video. Thanks, Rev!
Just rooted my Nexus 7, excellent step by step video actually took less time than I expected. I I can use all my external storage devices now, yessir!!
You are the man! I've rooted devices before following directions from other sources, but those instructions assumed I would already know some things (like why I need to use USB debugging). I don't have my Nexus 7 yet, but I'm anxiously awaiting it and will follow this video for sure. I appreciate it!
Thank you you , Reverend Kyle! I got the recent Jelly bean update earlier today. I watched this video a few days ago but was waiting to root my 8g N7 till I got that JB update. I rewatched this video and had no problem doing this procedure . Again , thank you and may the wind always be at your back just dont turn around to pee in it.
Great vid Rev. I never rooted any device before, but I decided to go for it after watching your video. It worked great and now I can use all my thumb drives on my new tablet!!! I was even able to install flash on it. This tablet now officially kicks ass :)
The unlock didn't work the first time for me, but I just unplugged and plugged it back in and it worked the second time around. Other than that, no issues! Thanks for the tutorial for the "average joe".
HI Rev., Just a suggestion. you could eliminate that bright glare on the desk in any subsequent videos if you would place a dark cloth or something non-reflective down first. It would make the video a whole lot easier to watch and also make the device stand out better. Keep up the great work.
This One definitively Save me.... I was having a Problem with another video SuperSU will say something like" Binary Not install do a Manual re-root or something like that. Thanks you for the tutorial
Nice guide, my root went smooth as hell!! I have one question, now there is n update for the landscape mode out for the Nexus 7, how do I install that update now? can I just update it or do I need to wait till it gets cracked or something?
Thank you very much for this video. Too bad I don't have a computer or else I'd do this right away. However I do have a question. What exactly would unlocking and rooting my nexus allow me to do that I couldn't do already? Now I know that you already mentioned that it would allow me to root certain apps but what other capabilities would I have by doing this? Again, thank you for this video. Much appreciated :)
Thank you! Didn't work for me the first time around, got the 'Temporarily booting twrp' message. Clicked 'root' button again and it worked perfectly for me the second time around with no fuss.
Nexus 7 32 GB Build JOP4OD ToolKit 1.6.2 Followed this vid using the above and it went fine. A couple of extra steps in the updated toolkit + I made a backup before starting, but all went to plan.
If the tablet is factory reset again, through the standard settings after the Unlock and Rooting has taken place, will it stay Unlocked & Rooted, or does it revert back to it's original non-Unlocked non-Rooted settings? I'm curious for resale purposes.. thanks
I just picked up this tablet last night and am definitely an average person trying to do all this. Are there any real major things I can do with rooting this or should I just save myself the time. Any insight would help!
Yes..you stil receive OTA updates. You may install OTA rootkeeper , just in case the OTA update causes the root to be lost. It also doubles as a temp unroot solution, for times when you need to use your wallet account etc
Thanks for everything works perfectly for me 1 quick question though how do I get my Google credit back because I backed up everything I backed up my media/data and all my apps but when I went to go back to sign into Google and went on the play store my account balance was at 0 and I didn't spend any of my money before I rooted the device?
It does work with 4.2.2, if your nexus doesnt respond to the program, tap "Connected as a media device" in the notification bar, then tap "Camera (PTP)" then it should work
Rooting voids warranty, but it's not illegal. With rooting you can use some apps that works only on rooted devices, like one app that deleted ALL ads from apps and browsers
click "About tablet". At the bottom you will see the build number. Click on that repeatedly 7 times. You will get a pop up on the screen saying "you are now a developer!". The "Developer options" menu will now appear in your settings. :D
Hey Rev, Richard here, it's Fri., 10-12-12 as I write. You probably already know, but just in case you don't, here's a heads-up as a thank you for your fine videos. During a search, I just ran across... well, it won't let me put a link in... It's about an update to Jelly Bean which will allow landscape mode on the Nexus7 tab. Wish I could have given you two links, one is the file itself.
Yes, but any apps you have downloaded are linked to your Google account - this means that although they will be wiped from your tablet, you won't have to re-purchase them. Just go into Google Play store to the downloads tab at the top and you'll see all your apps there, ready to be re-downloaded.
hey thanks for the guide.. i've already rooted my n7 without flasing the cwm. my question is, should i unroot the n7 and root it back and flash the cwm or is there any other way ?
I need to know too! I kind of regret recklessly updating to 4.2.2... We'll probably have to wait a week before someone develops an airtight flashing method for the latest version.
So, let me ask you something. The unlocking will factory reset the device, so..If I get this tablet, straight out of the box like you and inmediatly proceed to unlcking and rooting, is not neccesary to backup, am I right? The backup is only neccesary if I want to root when I already have downloaded apps and all that stuff?
I kept getting an error when trying to unlock the Nexus 7. The error says "fast boot" not found. When I had got past this, the "unlock boot loader" never appeared on the Nexus. PC needed to be rebooted. Not sure what to do next.
Can you back up your apps and data before rooting then get them back once rooted and still have your current status because I have lots of accounts and apps I don't want to lose if I root
PROBLEM WITH FASTBOOT FIX: If ADB wont communicate while in fastboot mode its because its a different device in the device manager. 1. install NRT_v2.1.9.sfx (wug tools nexus tool kit) 2. sometimes ADB doesnt see the device in fastboot 3. device manager must see nexus as "android adb device" 4. while in fastboot mode (power + vol down) load the driver from wug tools install location. "android adb device" should be in device manager 5. unplug and replug nexus to get "android adb device" to show 6. now you can unlock bootloader using commands or the toolkit I spent about 3 hours as the instructions I saw didnt make it clear to check device manager while in fastboot mode.

thank you so much for making this so easy!
i was terrified of doing this until i watched your video twice to make sure i was doing it right
This is my first Android, and first time of unlocking and rooting anything. I followed these steps , and it was easy. I saved a back up, and that takes a little while. Now have to figure out how to get my F.F.3 game back. Thanks very much.

Thank you Reverend Kyle for making this so simple. I never rooted a device before even though I have had plenty of Android phones and tablets.
Just rooted my Nexus 7, excellent step by step video actually took less time than I expected. I I can use all my external storage devices now, yessir!!
Great video! I was having issues with the ADB interface at the beginning until I found this. The rest was quick and painless.
You are the man! I've rooted devices before following directions from other sources, but those instructions assumed I would already know some things (like why I need to use USB debugging).
I don't have my Nexus 7 yet, but I'm anxiously awaiting it and will follow this video for sure.
I appreciate it!
Thanks for this. With my first 7 i didn't have any issues and tonight it was killing me till I saw your post.
Thanks for a perfect howto guide, used the latest toolkit on my 2012 Nexus 7 running Android 5.1.1 and it worked first time just like you said.
I just rooted my device. It worked perfectly. There were some differences because the app has been updated. But this is a great video. Thanks RK!
great guide - some new options and slightly different screens for NRT v1.8.0 but still a valid and excellent guide. Next step - AdBlocker.
Thank you very much, Kyle. It is my first tablet and i would probably have no idea how to root it, but you guide has solved all my problems.

Works perfectly, thank you! (2012 Nexus 7 5.1.1)
This is one of the best videos to explain it to us newbies. Have you got one for Nexus 10 yet? Thanks
The unlock didn't work the first time for me, but I just unplugged and plugged it back in and it worked the second time around. Other than that, no issues! Thanks for the tutorial for the "average joe".
I received my Nexus 7 Today and i did the same thing i unlocked it already. Thanks for the video man!
Thank you so much! An idiot's guide was EXACTLY what I needed lol I had no idea how to use the root toolkit before this video.
Awesome! Wug's U/I is a little different with the latest version (1.6.1) but I was able to follow along with no trouble. THANK YOU so much!
I don't wanna root my device but this video helped me for the hidden developer options, now I know how to activate it, thanks! :)
HI Rev.,
Just a suggestion. you could eliminate that bright glare on the desk in any subsequent videos if you would place a dark cloth or something non-reflective down first. It would make the video a whole lot easier to watch and also make the device stand out better. Keep up the great work.
Yes. I have been told that movies will not play from the Play Store, but I have not tried that myself. OTA updates will still occur while rooted too.
Thank you. the step by step is perfect for new guys with the Nexus 7.
Thank You very much, First thing I did after obtaining my new Nexus 7. This is an excellent guide.
Just rooted my Nexus! It's awesome! Thanks again!
This One definitively Save me.... I was having a Problem with another video SuperSU will say something like" Binary Not install do a Manual re-root or something like that.
Thanks you for the tutorial

great ,guide worked well, followed step by step instructions and rooted no problem.great keep the guides coming.
That's how a guide should be, thanks, that's 5 devices I've rooted now :) next is the galaxy s4 when it's released
Thank you very much for this video. Too bad I don't have a computer or else I'd do this right away. However I do have a question. Again, thank you for this video. Much appreciated :)
Thanks for the Walk through Kyle!! It was as easy as you said it wold be!!
Root achieved! 8/19/2012 11:45AM EDT
Reverend Kyle: Thank you!
Very nicely done. Concise, clear and complete. Kudo's
Back in my day we had to walk 50 miles in the snow to root.
This was very clear & easy. I'll be tring it this weekend thanx so much..
Thanks for the post. I was able to root by Nexus 7 the first time.
Thank you! Didn't work for me the first time around, got the 'Temporarily booting twrp' message. Clicked 'root' button again and it worked perfectly for me the second time around with no fuss.
Nexus 7 32 GB
Build JOP4OD

Followed this vid using the above and it went fine. A couple of extra steps in the updated toolkit + I made a backup before starting, but all went to plan.
awesome, worked in my nexus 7 that just arrived to Chile.
Thanks
This worked great. He also teaches you how to kill a fly like a ninja at 20:10.

Thanks @reverendjkr for the detailed video. It did help me to restore factory image on my unit.
I just picked up this tablet last night and am definitely an average person trying to do all this. Are there any real major things I can do with rooting this or should I just save myself the time. Any insight would help!
many thanks man, awesome demonstration, but I don't call it '' idiot's guide to.... '' but I call it '' Perfect guide to .... '' thank you again. :)
Thanks for the video my Nexus is now fully rooted. Thanks again.4
About to try it now, thanks for the video.
Yes..you stil receive OTA updates. You may install OTA rootkeeper , just in case the OTA update causes the root to be lost. It also doubles as a temp unroot solution, for times when you need to use your wallet account etc
Super Video.... Thanks for taking the time to put it together

Thank you so much for a wonderful tutorial
Far from my first root but may be one of the easiest. Thanx Rev Kyle
Thanks for everything works perfectly for me 1 quick question though how do I get my Google credit back because I backed up everything I backed up my media/data and all my apps but when I went to go back to sign into Google and went on the play store my account balance was at 0 and I didn't spend any of my money before I rooted the device?
Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU, for putting up this guide!!! :D
thanks a lot mate, it works perfectly for my nexus 7.

love ur videos dude, nicely done and very informative.
click "About tablet". At the bottom you will see the build number. Click on that repeatedly 7 times. You will get a pop up on the screen saying "you are now a developer!". The "Developer options" menu will now appear in your settings. :D
Good practical guide, worked just fine thanks
works perfectly for me thank you :D instructions were clear, great job!
So cool.. This was the advice I was looking for. Thank you.
Hey Rev, Richard here, it's Fri., 10-12-12 as I write. You probably already know, but just in case you don't, here's a heads-up as a thank you for your fine videos. Good question. Yes, you will.
So if you unlock it can you do the backup
estore thing and it will all come back?
My tablet is now stuck on boot loader screen. Says booting downloaded image. Keeps being stuck. Waited 10 min. How long it suppose to take?
thank you so much for making this so easy!
Yes, but any apps you have downloaded are linked to your Google account - this means that although they will be wiped from your tablet, you won't have to re-purchase them. Just go into Google Play store to the downloads tab at the top and you'll see all your apps there, ready to be re-downloaded.
Shall try it now, thnx for the help!
Thank you - very clear and informative :)
Thanks for the video. It was a great help! Thumbs up!
hey thanks for the guide.. i've already rooted my n7 without flasing the cwm. my question is, should i unroot the n7 and root it back and flash the cwm or is there any other way ?
Thank GOD!!!! Finally someone that speaks proper English and doesn't have a dirty indian accent!!!!
LOL
Thanks dude :} worked even on 4.4.2 KOT49H
Thank you. You helped me so much.
Thank you very much, I really appreciate your help :)
My tablet is stuck at boot loader screen. Says booting downloaded image. Waited 10 min. How long it suppose to take? Keeps staying there.
Thanks Rev. it worked for me
Thanks for this video. It helped a ton.
When Rooting, my Nexus 7 is stuck on "Booting Downloaded Image"..and I have to reboot Wug's as well as Nexus 7 everytime! Any solutions??
Perfect video. Thanks!
The movie itself or was the playback of the movie affected by the rooting?
;)
I need to know too! I kind of regret recklessly updating to 4.2.2... We'll probably have to wait a week before someone develops an airtight flashing method for the latest version.
So, let me ask you something. I kept getting an error when trying to unlock the Nexus 7. The error says "fast boot" not found. When I had got past this, the "unlock boot loader" never appeared on the Nexus. PC needed to be rebooted. Not sure what to do next.
Thank you! Perfect tutorial!
Can you back up your apps and data before rooting then get them back once rooted and still have your current status because I have lots of accounts and apps I don't want to lose if I root
Awesome tutorial! many thanks.
I'm running stock 4.4.4 and was wondering if this would still work, also will I be able to update back to 4.4.4 after the rooting process is complete.
Won't need to. That's why you select your unrooted build in the setup.
Great video! I'm up and running a rooted N7 without the slightest hitch. Like'd and sub'd!
Great video thanks. My Nexus was resistant to change. lol
PROBLEM WITH FASTBOOT FIX:
If ADB wont communicate while in fastboot mode its because its a different device in the device manager.
1. install NRT_v2.1.9.sfx (wug tools nexus tool kit)
2. sometimes ADB doesnt see the device in fastboot
3. device manager must see nexus as "android adb device"
4. while in fastboot mode (power + vol down) load the driver from wug tools install location. "android adb device" should be in device manager
5. unplug and replug nexus to get "android adb device" to show
6. now you can unlock bootloader using commands or the toolkit
I spent about 3 hours as the instructions I saw didnt make it clear to check device manager while in fastboot mode.
