    • @PM4K
      @PM4K Рік тому +3

      Everybody says it devalues the regular season for top programs, but I disagree with that. Those teams still want to win their rivalries, they still want conference titles, they want the bye week, it still means everything to them! It might mean less to the fans but it means everything to them still. The expanded format raises the stakes for more teams and makes more games matter, and opens up the door for more awesome and unique matchups. The end of the season has more value.

    • @nathanvandyke9951
      @nathanvandyke9951 10 місяців тому

      @@PM4K The other thing is that your team is no longer eliminated after 1 or 2 losses. For example, once LSU lost to Ole Miss, any playoff hopes were done, and they really didn't have much to play for. Same with Penn State after losing to Michigan.

    • @PM4K
      @PM4K 10 місяців тому

      @@nathanvandyke9951 Eh, I'm okay with that. If a 2 loss team wins it all, they would've had to go through like 3 playoff rounds of the top teams to get there and at least 1 of the top 4. That's well fought if you ask me. A top team losing after a bye week is no excuse to me because they had more prep time and less risk of injuries to key players so they should be more than ready to play, and they deserve that break as a reward for being the best in the regular season. But, would a 2 loss team even be able to do that? That's what we're really asking. Having to play and win more games to get there undoubtedly makes it harder, and the national champion is all the more deserving of the title.
      Plus, the NFL has more than a 4 team playoff with less teams, and people still say the NFL is better despite the fact that we all can see the mediocrity of the NFL.
      Another thing is that the 2 loss teams will have to worry about missing the cut to the top G5 spot, which could be embarrassing depending on which P5 team doesn't make the cut.

    This also gives teams a chance that have drastically improved over the season after they may have lost 1 or 2 games. There will still be arguments for those that get in. But the championship game as an automatic bid into the playoff is a great way to determine teams, being that a few conferences did away with the championship to try and preserve their top team into 1 of the 4 spots by not giving them another game to possibly lose and then lose a spot in the 4 team playoff.

    Nah, more is not always better. I like the current format because , first, it's unique in it format, second, I want the best of the best at the end, otherwise don't watch any regular season games and just wait for the playoffs. So Matt, not everyone who is against it is weird, not everyone is required to like the same thing. Think about it, the FCS has 24 teams, how many of those games do you watch yearly?????? Crickets. I can hear it now, there will be 12 teams, then 16, then 32, it's crazy. I love the fact that I live and die every weekend with my team. I do not want to see an 8-4 team in there even if they win their conference. And please, don't tell me about the NFL and their wildcard systems, why does college have to be like the pros? Yeah, I know it's about more money, but how much of that are YOU going to receive? Call me crazy, but I still believe in the student athlete, some people actually do care about education. I'm not saying everyone now, but there are some who want an education.
    So, I am ok with 4 teams, and I am 60 years old have watched a lot of football, and I want the season to mean something. I like the rivalries, I like tradition, and I like all that was football growing up. I know some of you will come at me, but whatever, but it's my opinion, at least for now.

    i think the final 4 games should the orange bowl, the rose bowl, the sugar bowl, and the fiesta bowl. then the games after that are the final 4. then the national championship.
    i know those games have been synonymous with certain conferences but why not. after all i believe it could just continue to make ncaa a whole lot of money.

    In order for the 12 team playoff to work the regular season has to be either shorter or start earlier. The problem with a 12 team playoff is that injuries and the health of the players since the season is extended. The nfl added an extra game to the regular season and many players didn't liked that for the same reason so if it doesn't work in league, the odds of add more games in college is unlikely but I could be wrong.

    My biggest critisism of the 12 team format comes from the reactions so far from coaches and players. Take for instance... Alabama this year. In the 4 team format, they have a 12 game regular season, plus a championship game if they qualify. Then either a bowl game, or up to 2 playoff games. This puts a season between 12-15 games. Under the new format, if you are not one of the top 4 ranked teams, instead of a max of 2 playoff games, you could end up playing up to 4 playoff games. Now 2 more games might not seem like a lot, but if you have ever talked to a coach or a player, they will tell you just how much work and effort goes into prepping for every game. You also have to factor in other variables. 2 more games means more games for player injuries. The new transfer window is also in this time period. Both the physical and mental health of these players need to be accounted for. As a spectator, the new 12 team playoffs are fantastic and I can't wait to see these games with their stakes in action. But the chaos that this adds to the players and coaches lives during an already busy time make me hesitant to feel good about it yet.

    At first I thought an 8 team playoff would have been sufficient but I have been swayed to embrace this 12 team format. Conference championships are relevant again, a guaranteed G5 spot so no more excuses and what ifs, and the best non- conference Champs get an at large bid. I see no problems here and the first team out will have little compelling argument as opposed to #3 in the BCS or #5 in the current system. Conference championship guarantees also eliminate at least some Conference biases, although you may still end up with stacked SEC at-large bids or to a lesser extent the B1G.

    • @HercuLync

      An 8 team playoff with conference champion autobids, is really an 18 team playoff because conference games become playoff games. It also allows for the people that like to argue to put 2 teams into the final 8. 12 teams is too many. We're trading the regular season for nothing because a 12 team playoff adds the same amount of games as an 8 game playoff.

    As a fan of a Group of Five team, I agree with you on everything, this should have gone in last year! You especially nailed it on conference titles, make conference titles matter again! Remember that time Penn State beat Ohio State AND went on to win the Big Ten, and it was still Ohio State that got in? And this year, TCU loses the Big 12 championship but still gets in, what was the point in that? Make it freaking matter again! And give Group of Five teams a freaking reason to stay in FBS, it's nuts how an FBS team can do everything asked of them, and the best it gets them is "a good bowl." Now it actually looks like we're all here for a reason! Only thing about what you said, "top six conference champions," wouldn't it technically be possible for two Group of Five champions to outrank a Power Five champion, with the right conditions? Said Power Five champion would probably still get in as an At-Large, but anyway, a lot of chances for good things to happen!

    Thing is that we don’t need more teams to make more games that matter. So what two or three more games matter at the end of the year with 12 team expansion. Expanding that much devalues 2 or 3 games a year for ALL teams in the regular season. Expansion should be capped to 6. All power five conference champions make it and then the highest ranked left over team. You inject added value into the championship weekend, add variety, and allow the potential for a G 5 school to make it. You only add one round to the playoffs and the 1 and 2 seed get a bye and don’t have any added wear and tear.

    The 4 team system now works well - with rare exceptions, everyone agrees who the top 4 are, which leads to one national champion. It used to be 64 teams playing in 32 bowl games, leaving 32 winners and no clear #1 (e.g. ‘97 Michigan & Nebraska). The injuries late in the season are detrimental to having 13+ games, just ask the Heisman hopefuls. Football is not basketball or baseball, with a broad playoff system and Cinderella teams to decide a national champ (sic).

    One thing that is not considered is the traveling for fans.
    Unlike a bowl game fans schedule a vacation and go for the week or weekend.
    Take a lower seed who has a big fan base. That team plays 3 or 4 games in the playoff if they become hot.
    I do not think that the fans will travel all across the country for spiked up ticket prices since these are playoff games and the travel would be expensive to say the least depending on where the venue is.
    Just something to think about here. With today's economy I am not sure how well the venues would sell.
    As a purist yes the expansion is great but from an affordabilty standpoint I am skeptical and hopefully wrong.

Teams like Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State, Clemson, Notre Dame, and looks like Michigan is the newest kid on the block in this list of likely champions. I think people are trying to make college football more like the NFL, but people forget, in college the talent/ skill gap between teams are very real. The skill gap between the 12th best team and the 1st best team are insane. The NFL playoffs work very well for a reason, the teams are on a much more even playing field, every year there are new teams that can potentially make a run for the SB. I just don't see college football even coming close to that.

    12 teams is too many. I like the 6 conference champions getting it. That adds value and excitement to the season. Adding 6 more teams makes playing in a conference championship a punishment for teams that are locks. If I'm Michigan, Georgia, USC or TCU, I'm going to play my backups in the conference championship because I'm getting in anyway and it would push better competition out of the playoffs with the automatic bids. 8 teams is the sweat spot. It lets in the conference champions and allows for two teams that lose that game to still get in. The people that like to argue over who gets in can still argue and and pick two teams. Six random teams is too many and makes the regular season less exciting. You say you like this because it's more football, but you devalue the entire regular season for nothing because and 8 team playoff would have the same number of games. The 12 teams system clearly sucks.

    • @brian2440
      @brian2440 Рік тому

      I’d be more inclined to support 8 than 6, because with 6 you have the risk of teams either getting rid of OOC or OOC serving no value at all.
      What happens if you have Coastal Carolina beat Clemson who wins the ACC during OOC play, but UCF goes undefeated? Coastal would be sitting out and watching a team they beat make the playoffs.
      This is rare to occur but it happened with the BCS bowls in 04, 08, 09 and 10.
      Another issue with 6 comes with when there are 3 way ties for conferences.
      This season, a question would be raised with Washington vs Oregon Had Oregon won, Oregon would play USC for the PAC, even though Oregon and Washington have the same conerence record and Washington beat them.
      We have also seen this happen historically with LSU, Tenn, Georgia in 07, USC, Kansas, Mizzou, and Oklahoma in 07, Oregon and Oregon State in 08, Texas Oklahoma and Texas Tech in 08 etc.
      This is why you do inevitably still need some at large spots to cover this historical situation.

Overall, I think it's going to be a lot of fun to watch, and also has the benefit of ending all the bickering about which teams got screwed and how rankings are biased. If you can't make a 12 team field, no one cares what your complaints are. I was against it at first, but the more I hear and think about it, this will be fun. There's a very simple answer, that's to have them all play. You can get from a round of 128 to a final in 7 weeks.
