It just amazes me that people ever doubted Daniel Craig being cool enough for Bond. He like couldn't be more Bond. Love him in Munich too, between this and Casino Royale.
I used to live a mile away from Stoke Park golf club where the scenes with Jimmy and at the end were filmed. It was also were Goldfinger golf scenes were filmed and numerous other UK films. Great place and me and the missus had a lovely lunch there. I tried to tell the matrodiee , "A little privacy, Angleo" and he looked right through me. He had not seen Layercake, obviously!
@@chrissiereacts Just in case any "complete muppetts" come on here doubting me, and to show off a bit", I lived in a village called "Iver Village". 2 miles west of Uxbridge! If you find that village then look on a map and go 2 miles north / north - west you will find Stoke Park golf club. You will also find Pinewood Studios, 1 mile north west of Iver Village where numerous films (Aliens and 1000 more films) were filmed. We also went to Black Park with our toddler which is also slam bang in-between Stoke Park and Pinewood Studios. Coincidence....nah! Just where we lived and take that mo-fo's!
I love how effortlessly slick Layer Cake is. The rise n fall of the lovable rouge… the antihero… a chancer… the very epitome of the British soul. I always felt that “The Gentleman” borrowed heavily from Craig’s character in the form of matthew mcconaughey. Actually… it’s kind of a part two if Craig hadn’t been killed off. Glorious movie. Glad you enjoyed this tasty morsel 😊
Another great choice, can't believe more people don't know about this one. Guy Ritchie's producer Matthew Vaughan stepped up to direct this one and almost out-Guy-Ritchie'd Guy Ritchie! I've mentioned "Sexy Beast" before but the more I see from you, the more I think it'd be right up your alley :)
One of my favourtie films... Seen it so many times I know every word, every inflection and every look off by heart. Really enjoyed watching you watch it :o)
This is the film that got Daniel Craig the James Bond gig. He was excellent in this, and indeed the whole film was excellent. Brilliant viewing, glad you enjoyed it too!
I watched this in 2005 for the first time. The cafe scene with Morty relentlessly beating Freddie was so unexpected. It seemed so random that Morty, always calm, would just SNAP on someone for no reason, and then you hear why, and think "Oh, yeah. That would explain it".
Absolutely stacked cast, the old school of British cinema with the all the up & comers it’s like a passing of the torch. Craig’s performance landed him Bond, Sally Hawkins Oscar nominated multi bafta, Tom Hardy, Ben Whishaw. It’s a brilliant film
Always loved how wonderfully different Sally Hawkins is in this to almost all her other roles. She plays working class so well; it's like when you see Kathy Burke play posh. Brilliant.
Oh my poor ears after that scream at the end Chrissie... 😂 Layer Cake is still one of my favourite movies... And although it was a short reaction... It was an excellent reaction none the less... I'm so glad you enjoyed the runner up movie Chrissie... All the best... Cheers. 🍺
Daniel Craig's best movie and most people have never heard of it much less seen it. The title makes it sound like possibly a rom-com. But when a rom-com experiences the car bomb, they turn it off.
Great story, great actors, great soundtrack and easily in my top ten all time faves. One of those movies I seem to always need to see at least two or three times a year. Another top review Chrissie, well done!
It’s absolutely insane how much a love this movie…sound track gets into your skin ….Daniel Craig pre Bond ..saved the franchise and set the bar so high that they are probably screwed.
@@chrissiereacts If you go full Monty on the bond thing put on some comfortable shoes, that’s a journey. In my opinion Craig hit the re set button on the franchise. He was bludgeoned by the press when he was initially picked and so were the broccoli’s. With the pending direction of the franchise post Craig it’s an interesting story.
I'm going to assume you've not seen Sexy Beast. It's Ben Kingsley's best performance. Very lowkey, small budget. Dialogue heavy. My mate worked on it. An absolute masterpiece. You'll never look at Kingsley the same again.
THE ENDING GOT ME TOO!! I'm glad you got this ending because in the USA they had an alternative ending where he doesn't shoot he just follows them in a car. I think I read somewhere that the director said that Daniel Craig's character doesn't die from the gunshot..so that something.
Matt Vaughn's directorial trajectory has been a wild one. Here he starts as a knock-off Guy Ritchie (albeit an excellent one), whom he produced many movies for. Then he tries some studio pictures (Stardust, Kick-Ass, X-men) before coming back to this more familiar GR-esque style with his more recent movies like Kingsmen.
Great choice of film for a reaction. I have a feeling you would like "Best Offer", from 2013. Also, if you enjoy British cinema, I highly recommend watching a younger Tom Hardy in two successive roles, "Stuart, A Life Backwards" and "Bronson". Phenomenal display of his acting chops.
I love this film, and the cast is so stacked. Also I don’t think the end is what it seems, given how XXXX is dressed he clearly moved to the US and became a private detective with a preposterous accent.
Soon as I saw this movie! I predicted Daniel Craig would get the BOND role! This was a perfect audition for Bond, and Im convinced this movie got him the role!👍🤔
Ooo...you beauty....just what I needed! Will watch now. Hope you enjoyed! Hope you have had a good day! You need to review 90's Rave music as well! The best of times for us old timers :) Taking "E's" and Coke and living it large! :)
Part of a trilogy - Yellow Card & Final Cut are the other two films, different stories but basically all the same British actors using their real first names. 🌞🎥😎🙌👍
Couple of fun facts, the large white country club at the end where XX gets shot, is Stoke park, west of London. It was also used in James Bonds Goldfinger and briefly in Rocking Rolla which you should definitely watch.
Chrissie...can I suggest watching (if you haven't already??) 'THE BUSINESS' starring Danny Dyer, Tamer Hassan and Geoff Bell...an absolute belter of a British gangster film...you'll like it...with all it's twists and turns...and the 80's soundtrack is awesome..
Sorry did I just hear someone say was Van Halen big in 84 ..wawawawhhhhat!? Lol. Yes they had one of the greatest albums ever “1984” it had “ hot for teacher” “ top jimmy” “ I’ll wait” & even “jump” which is …whatever also you’ve got the privilege of hearing zep 2 & 4 from start to finish, lucky. I’ve heard those two albums so much I can sing evey word every guitar riff solo drum roll & basslih , if they separate “heartbreaker & livin lovin maid” I get borderline homicidal. Enjoy! That’s a treat, you’ll soon realize I hope 🫡
I've always thought that the shower scene after the murder, and the fact Sienna Miller is in black stockings and suspenders, are references to The Long Good Friday and Get Carter. Therefore I wasn't expecting a happy ending. Did you spot that the lad who shot him at the end was played by Ben Wishaw. He's Q in Daniel Craig's Bond films and also the voice of Paddington.
@@chrissiereacts The first 2 are also British Gangster films. I'm assuming you've seen the Bond's and Paddington films. If not, you have to put the Paddington's at the top of your watch list.

'Layer Cake' is a really, if you'll excuse the pun, layered film. Every character gets their moment in the sun. Those are the best movies, where no one's a stock character. Not as big or twisty, but 'Heist' and 'The Score' are a couple of good crime films. Anything Guy Ritchie. And you could do worse than 'Zodiac', that's for sure.

I think this is a very good movie, but there is one big hole in the plot. The Serbs would not have accepted losing the pills to the police. They would have demanded payment no matter what happened to the pills.
That's unrealistic but it does allow the reveal of the pill *juggernaut* they're running. A million E's would be manufactured in that production in no time at all. The police seizing and destroying the pills are a footnote to the Serbian boss, so he writes them off and accepts the Duke's head.

That ass-kicking in the Regency Cafe is one of the greatest scenes in film history.
