  • Well I thought I'd seen this but I hadn't, Major definitely hasn't seen this. We're still in Britain and this time watching LAYER CAKE, Starring Daniel Craig, Sienna Miller, in this wild, very LAYER-ED (Pun) movie. Reminiscent of Snatch and directed by Matthew Vaughn, producer of Snatch. This is a request and we really enjoyed it. Rule Britannia!
    Enjoy my friends.

That scene of Daniel Craig walking down the hallway with the pistol is legit the reason he got the James bond job!!

Layer Cake is such an underrated gem of a movie, Glad you both enjoyed it.
I'd say there's 3 more quintessential British gangster films you need to see. Get Carter, Brighton Rock, and what many would say is the best of all, The Long Good Friday. Bob Hoskins gives an incredible performance with an iconic ending. I'm sure it will go down well.

The Korean bands name is Bomb the stage =BTS.
The two finger gesture means “Fuck you”, it mythically from the Battle of Agincourt where British archers destroyed the French army and won the battle while out numbered nearly 2/1. When the French captured a British archer, it’s said they would cut off those two fingers, so that the archers couldn’t use the longbow anymore. To us British the two finger gesture is a “fuck you, we still got our fingers”. But the origins are disputed, (that bit was for the trolls). I’ve seen Americans students get the peace gesture the wrong way round do get into trouble with doorman in my local town of Canterbury, which is a university city.

Always think of Guy Ritchie directing this when I see this movie. Just can't shake that thought. BTW, the alternate ending just had Craig driving off with the girl and the ex boyfriend following them in his own car. This ending was more vicious and startling and worked better for sure.

OMG, two for two, wtf is going on today? THANK you for this watchalong! I forgot what you were watching at the time but you mentioned something about liking the layers of some film and I suggested this flick, and as usual 'knowing' it would never happen (especially since I'm not a patreon member), so again, a big thank you.
So... - I don't know if it's just lazy casting or what, because the Broccolli's wanted Daniel AND Sienna Miller for Casino Royale. Sienna declined saying something like she wasn't ready for such a role. Frankly, I consider her and the other female in this movie, Sally Hawkins (Maudie, 2016, is a stand-out), two of the top ten best actors today. Sadly, Sienna isn't as, uh, 'hungry' to showcase her talents so that's a bit of a loss there (you just have to compare this role with her in the Alfie remake, her moments are easily some of the most effortless looking bits of top-tier acting I've seen).
    - Ben Winshaw, the shooter at the end... also goes on to help 007, as Q.

And the fact that he's anonymous throughout the entire film. At no point does he say his name, or does anyone else say it.
Even in the Credits his name is XXX as he's literally that cautious.
Most people don't pick up on it first time around. He only says it after he's been shot and is dying. So you barely notice he says "you don't know my name" type thing.
Coincidently I know ome of the Actors in this. The Crack house they go to looking for the big gangsters daughter.
When they are interrogating the two junkies. One of them, Darren Healy, is Irish.
Known him about 30 years but haven't seen him in a long time coz he moved to London for Acting work.
He had sone great potential and starred in a few movies.
He usually ends up playing the gangsters like in this. But he's doing what he loves. So more power to him.

    • @MajorProgress
      @MajorProgress Рік тому

I've heard he was already a fan fav in Britain (movies and TV), but not so much here. And so the casting of him got much backlash. So he leaned in and was like "fine, I'm not the Bond you want, but I am the Bond you need." He and the team the produces Bond films was right. Brilliant.

I know you're getting recommendations all over the option, but as a Brit it'd be remiss of me not to mention the following things you'll likely enjoy. As you enjoyed Trainspotting then let me point you to Shallow Grave, with several cracking moments and another adaptation of an Irvine Welsh book, including creepy baby doll. Given the love for Dead Mans Shoes (and I live in the same part of England as Meadows), then the This Is England series would be cracking nostalgic look back through the eras. But the most slept on film, that in many ways kick started the new British gangster flick was a film by Antonia Bird called Face, not underrated but hugely slept on, led by Bobby Carlisle and Ray Winstone it's brilliant romp of a few days in London
