- Well I thought I'd seen this but I hadn't, Major definitely hasn't seen this. We're still in Britain and this time watching LAYER CAKE, Starring Daniel Craig, Sienna Miller, in this wild, very LAYER-ED (Pun) movie. Reminiscent of Snatch and directed by Matthew Vaughn, producer of Snatch. This is a request and we really enjoyed it. Rule Britannia!
Enjoy my friends.
Also Please check out my short film "Strangers in the Night:" on the Screamfest Homepage you can find it here.

That scene of Daniel Craig walking down the hallway with the pistol is legit the reason he got the James bond job!!
I immediately thought the same when I saw it, but apparently it was his role as an assassin in Elizabeth that caught Barbara Broccoli's eye.
Sidney, who shoots Daniel Craig is the same actor who plays Q in the Craig era bond movies,Ben Wishaw.
Holy f*ck that is amazing! Nice catch.
The cafe scene is the same one in rocket man
I love this film. Another fact that I love is that Ben Wishaw (Sidney) and Sally Hawkins (Slasher) are respectively Paddington Bear and Mrs Brown in the Paddington movies; very different roles from here :)
Layer Cake is such an underrated gem of a movie, Glad you both enjoyed it.
I'd say there's 3 more quintessential British gangster films you need to see. Get Carter, Brighton Rock, and what many would say is the best of all, The Long Good Friday. Bob Hoskins gives an incredible performance with an iconic ending. I'm sure it will go down well.
Yes yes yes to all three of those :)
Agreed.
The Long Good Friday is a masterpiece.
The Long Good Friday is like the British Chinatown
_The Long Good Friday_ is also one of those films that someone saw and immediately thought "oh yeah he's the next Bond" about one of the actors.
The actor playing Duke is Jamie Foreman. He is the son of Freddie Foreman, a proper olde schoole gangster. A real villain that worked witht the Kray twins.
Its just cool thing to know.
Layer Cake is the English "Carlitos Way" 🤔🎥😎🙌👍
Fun fact
My friend sells medium to high end cars in Doncaster England.
They bought that audi estate/station wagon at auction.
A guy in their village bought it and drove it for years.
That is all.
That's amazing to hear! Seriously I feel like you could do a doc or TV series just on people who fall in love with movies and then buy things from the film, either actual things or replicas.
Great reaction guys, Layer Cake is criminally underrated in my opinion. Would love to see you reacting to 'Sexy Beast', keeping it in line with the genre.👍
This film blew my mind. It's just smooth throughout and every actor is great. The diner beatdown😮
I had to laugh as "The Duke" actor Janie Foreman is the son of Freddie Foreman, a 80's gangster and armed robber.
One of the few films that I can watch again and again.
Bro, been added to the list now. I will rewatch this on the regular just to remind me of some fantastic story telling! Also DC. Them eyes and that Bond esq energy. Over all and forever, brilliant!
Can’t see anyone has commented this but the golf course at the beginning was used as the golf course in Goldfinger. Nice Bond link!
Finally someone covered this brilliant movie. Good job guys
So glad we did. As you stated, so brilliant.
I'd love you two to do In Bruges. One of the best.
The dog's bollocks of a film.
Coming Soon.
This is the film that got him the Bond job.
Saw this movie on HBO. Loved it the first time through. Its got cool accents, good music, and awesome double-crosses. Very underrated and I agree is a 9/10 for me.
Got this from the 4 for $20 bin at blockbuster. Daniel craig, colm meany, should be good... Blown away! Smooth throughout and the diner beatdown is iconic.
A great film and very true to the book! Also - regarding James bond, Sidney (Dukes nephew) would go on to play 'Q' in the franchise.
this is one of the most underrated Movie of it's time.
@MAJORMOVIEMADNESS you guys are the best.
So worth the watch! Glad we watched it and love that we got the recommendation.
Dead Man's Shoes is great but Layer Cake is brilliant. Love it. So many absolutely top quality actors in this.
You really need to see The Long Good Friday, in my opinion it's the best British gangster movie.
Do "Kill List". It's like "Dead Man's Shoes" but...
And (avengment) that’s like dead man’s shoes as well if you have seen it?
binge watching 'em all lads
top draw
Not sure if you guys realised but one of the major points is that at no point throughout the film do you find out Daniel Craig’s characters name. Hence the bit at the end where he says “if you knew my name you would be as clever as I am”. It’s a brilliantly written script.
Yep! got that on the second watch. Brilliant writing!
Such a cool film and so many well known actors
The Korean bands name is Bomb the stage =BTS.
The two finger gesture means “Fuck you”, it mythically from the Battle of Agincourt where British archers destroyed the French army and won the battle while out numbered nearly 2/1. When the French captured a British archer, it’s said they would cut off those two fingers, so that the archers couldn’t use the longbow anymore. To us British the two finger gesture is a “fuck you, we still got our fingers”. But the origins are disputed, (that bit was for the trolls). I’ve seen Americans students get the peace gesture the wrong way round do get into trouble with doorman in my local town of Canterbury, which is a university city.
Your town makes good rugby jerseys.
I remember watching this when this came out and all I could do was think Daniel Craig would make a great Bond 🇬🇧
And he did!
Always think of Guy Ritchie directing this when I see this movie. Just can't shake that thought. BTW, the alternate ending just had Craig driving off with the girl and the ex boyfriend following them in his own car. This ending was more vicious and startling and worked better for sure.
Big white building at the start is a very nice hotel spa and golf club and just outside Slough, used in a lot of 007 movies near pinewood studios
OMG, two for two, wtf is going on today? THANK you for this watchalong! I forgot what you were watching at the time but you mentioned something about liking the layers of some film and I suggested this flick, and as usual 'knowing' it would never happen (especially since I'm not a patreon member), so again, a big thank you.
So... - I don't know if it's just lazy casting or what, because the Broccolli's wanted Daniel AND Sienna Miller for Casino Royale. Sienna declined saying something like she wasn't ready for such a role. Frankly, I consider her and the other female in this movie, Sally Hawkins (Maudie, 2016, is a stand-out), two of the top ten best actors today. Sadly, Sienna isn't as, uh, 'hungry' to showcase her talents so that's a bit of a loss there (you just have to compare this role with her in the Alfie remake, her moments are easily some of the most effortless looking bits of top-tier acting I've seen).
- Ben Winshaw, the shooter at the end... also goes on to help 007, as Q.
Checkout the film “American Woman” Sienna got a lead and for me did a great job.
And the fact that he's anonymous throughout the entire film. At no point does he say his name, or does anyone else say it.
Even in the Credits his name is XXX as he's literally that cautious.
Most people don't pick up on it first time around. He only says it after he's been shot and is dying. So you barely notice he says "you don't know my name" type thing.
Coincidently I know ome of the Actors in this. The Crack house they go to looking for the big gangsters daughter.
When they are interrogating the two junkies. One of them, Darren Healy, is Irish.
Known him about 30 years but haven't seen him in a long time coz he moved to London for Acting work.
He had sone great potential and starred in a few movies.
He usually ends up playing the gangsters like in this. But he's doing what he loves. So more power to him.
I genuinely thought he should be bond first time I saw this haha
I've heard he was already a fan fav in Britain (movies and TV), but not so much here. And so the casting of him got much backlash. So he leaned in and was like "fine, I'm not the Bond you want, but I am the Bond you need." He and the team the produces Bond films was right. Brilliant.
I know you're getting recommendations all over the option, but as a Brit it'd be remiss of me not to mention the following things you'll likely enjoy. As you enjoyed Trainspotting then let me point you to Shallow Grave, with several cracking moments and another adaptation of an Irvine Welsh book, including creepy baby doll. Given the love for Dead Mans Shoes (and I live in the same part of England as Meadows), then the This Is England series would be cracking nostalgic look back through the eras. But the most slept on film, that in many ways kick started the new British gangster flick was a film by Antonia Bird called Face, not underrated but hugely slept on, led by Bobby Carlisle and Ray Winstone it's brilliant romp of a few days in London
Great film guys, glad you enjoyed it. You should give Harry brown a watch. 👍
Gosford Park is an amazing “whodunnit” drama with a few british/international stars you’d recognize and it’s a hell of a good script.
The presence of Sally Hawkins caught me by surprise.
I highly recommend you guys react to The Sting (1973)
Blue Iguana starring Sam Rockwell is a fun British crime indie movie.
Layer Cake makes me laugh 🤣
One of my all-times. Seen it 3x when it was released in select theaters. Great score, too.
OMFG the cast
Another British gangster for you with a comedy twist, Love, Honour and Obey. Starring Ray Winstone.
George brown plays crooks and high court judges good actor, varied perts
Last King of Scotland, Filth, Four Lions, Sightseers are some more good british films to watch
Get Carter.
Funny that out of everyone one it is Q that kills Bond.
Really enjoying your British movie reactions! Two more recommendations: Face (1997) - a gangster film starring Ray Winstone and Robert Carlyle, and Withnail and I (1987) - a comedy starring Richard E. Grant and Paul McGann.
You mean Robert Carlyle.
@@alastairballantyne7789 Edited. WTF was I thinking? Robert Llewellyn is the bloke who played Kryten in Red Dwarf!
Absolute yes to Face, long been one of my faves, so slept on by almost everyone. I love it, but I've always loved it so definitely intrigued as to what other audiences might think. That said a lot of it is very much in it's specific moment, but so many great performances, especially Phil Davis doing almost everything
@@cockbeard I might be misremembering, but didn't it start out as a two-part TV drama? Then it was combined into a feature film for video?
@@tbone35453 Pretty sure it was doen as a film, but I think Channel 4 were one of the biggest backers so might have well been shown that way as it's premiere. Perhaps if theatrical release was difficult to come by
Looks like a difficult film to edit for a reaction , thanks for the video.
No more than usual
The Kill List. Brilliant film.
7:19 who is that actor! i’ve seen him in things before! cool reaction. totally forgot sally hawkins was in this (she’s amazing)
_YEAH_ Sally Hawkins IS amazing in this and got totally overshadowed by what's her face who did nothing special!
@@dancarter482 sienna miller? i agree. sienna was the “it” girl at the time tho.
I feel dead man shoes has a similar magnetic vibe to shawshank
Not as powerful obviously but on the same direction if nothing else
Wait... you're saying what I think you are saying. Similar or, closely as dope by comparison. YES. AGREED. Because Shawshank is a movie that is mind glowingly perfect and amazing from every aspect of filmmaking,..., ...., ...., Less marketing because, we all know. But just so you know the name Andy Dufresne sits in my head rent-free. For all of my life. First because of the actors, and second because of the way Morgan Freeman says Andy Dufresne. UGGGGHHHH. It's a masterpiece for all the right reasons from forever on.
The dukes dad in real life was gangster
Do The Warriors please
Next English film you should watch is "Boiling Point". Its all one shot. Might be hard for a reaction but it is BRILLIANT
You want to watch Kill List its brutal.
Did you notice Tom Hardy as one of Daniel Craig's foot soldiers.
Yes
Nice. Another good one is Love, Honour and Obey, Ray Winstone, Sean Pertwee, Johnny Lee Miller, Judy Law. North vs South London.
51st State.
Not exactly british gangster but I think it would tie into the overall feel but I'd suggest This Is England
I mean an abosulutley british instution is the original Italian job.
Coming soon!
Great film, have you guys checked out Gangster No1 too?
Superb film
No we have not, I'll look it up though.
At 2:41 did did you guys think the screen/wifi was playing up?
Made me chuckle lol
Audio cut out and I had to fix it.
Knives out knives out knives out!
Can you please do The Limey starring Terrence Stamp??
Also, a bit off the British topic, have you guys seen any Ari Arter movies (Midsummer and Hereditary)?
I have not no. Maybe Richard though.
@@MajorProgress I would seriously recommend these two films. Two modern cult classics
Gangster N0 1 is an excellent British movie you guys should check out
Isn't Sidney related to Tammy and not her bf? I think he kills X at the end because of what happened to the Duke.
As mentioned before, The Long Good Friday is a must. And another vote for Gangster No. 1.
Don't think so - always read as his girlfriend (hence her asking DC to ring her whilst he wasn't looking). I always thought the shot at the end was to do with him stealing her as they still think the Duke was killed by Dragan
@@MrgarethwI put in my dvd in and watched the scene in the bar again. It seems she is his gf or that is the obvious way to interpret it (he doesn't call her a 'gf'). Still, to murder him over stealing his girl...I don't know, maybe. It could have been over the Duke. X didn't have to actually pull the trigger to be blamed for Duke going missing/being killed.
Title says "First time watching for both" and in your opening comments you say you've seen it before... ?
Star trek was never like this
Watch Naked by Mike Leigh.
Guys can u do the football factory please
