I remember when I first heard the Traces demo within days of it being released on UA-cam. That guitar tone blew my fucking mind and I was (still am) a hardcore Meshuggah junkie at the time. These dudes are....were...the real deal and I wish they would go back to their roots.

One of the hardest "zero" tracks ever made, Pretty much the Bible on how to construct a "zero" song (just a song involving a lot of "zero" riffs, the open unfretted note on a guitar)
I learned to play the album version on guitar, and it's crazy how much they're able to create dizzyingly complex riffs by bouncing on and off one root note
ever since their single last month I have listened to nearly nothing but vildhjarta, as I got into them from that single even though I should have started over a decade ago by now. didn't know this existed until now, so thank you.
I was fresh out and I feel like it changes music for me. I was just getting to an advanced level with guitar, where I could make sense of what they were doing and think "So many people aren't going to appreciate the genius of this just yet." I felt like it was my secret. I had several metalhead friends, but only one who had any interest. But he was as on the up and up with it as I was. We were both fully onboard with deconstructing it and hanging on the edge, wherever it moved we would study. And we were doing that with the sense that we were not the only ones, and that would make it worth it in the music we would hear and maybe make ourselves. I mean... I was obsessed, but was I wrong? It really felt \like the precipice of a new era, a dawning of empires. Listening to it now, it feels like the rawness has been lost. Not to mention, doing this back when they did was taking risks. People didn't know what to make of this stuff a lot of the time. There was like, the core that was setting up for the wave like "Aye, you hearin this?? Get ready." And then there was the greater metal spaces kind of struggling to integrate them in a cultural sense. You could basically put whatever you wanted in a djent song, so long as somewhere in its bones were some hallmark djent components. I think a lot of people didn't like it sneaking into their little genre parties. Now, it's like you can't escape those components, but none of it is really as compelling as this is without trying half as hard to make it good. A lot of stuff from this time just feels alive, because the ground was moving under everyone's feet, all of these new micro-movements taking hold. I think we were lucky to come up in the period we did, where we were transitioning more of how we do entertainment to the internet. Things were still wild-west, yet strong inroads were forming that let these underground artists have a shadow reach that would basically permeate everything and change it.

I will say, as someone who's just started listening to this band (really impressed so far) this was a very pleasantly surprising listen, even if I don't think it's enough to be called a masterpiece. I don't know if any band's made a masterpiece as their debut EP.
Yeah I agree, I definitely find their more refined material more artistic. But hearing some of the ideas that they’re incorporating as they continue to make music so many years later is so awesome. Such a unique group. I really hope they continue to innovate

I said this way back in 2011! The version they shipped with Måsstaden was so compressed and with so much bass it was actually overwhelming in a sort of "I'm not hearing what's going on here" kind of way. And then they dropped the ambience which is much of what made Omnislash so great. Their unique approach to ambience had me and many other metal artists yearning for something similar for years to come. A bunch of bands like Tesseract kept pursuing it, though. It's still a staple of early 10s progressive metal.
I literally love both renditions of all the tracks that made it to the full length. Some parts on this EP are so fuckin sick and magical, and they were changed to fit the Masstadeb vibe. Idk man I think they're all fire in their own right. Thall.

it was just a demo. their first actual album was originally going to be more this style, but just before that was finished I think there were some lineup changes and they decided to move towards that different, darker, slightly less rhythmically technical sound they have now. I don't dislike what Vildhjarta became, but their album was a huge disappointment for me because I fucking loved this, and was expecting this but even tighter and with better production quality. Can't believe I've been sleeping on this band for this long. There are some things that make this seem almost amateur-ish, to try to describe it, like the abrupt cut offs at the end of certain songs, or the inconsistent production (mostly very good but generally think it had some problems that a more seasoned and professional project wouldn't have), but for a debut EP, this is amazing, and given what people have been saying about the band's insane return, I expect I'm going to absolutely love some of their other stuff.

Might be kind of weird or disappointing since this comment is from a year ago, but the reasons I haven't gotten to their other stuff yet are three-fold. First is that I get busy and distracted, and second is I have a ton of other music I also want to get around to. Third reason is that I've been having some issues with my ears lately so I've been catching up on music more slowly than usual this year. I still want to listen to more of these guys sooner or later though, and I'll try to keep this thread in mind and get back to you when I've heard more.
