How To Use a Touch Up Paint Pen to Repair Car Paint Scratches (New!)

  • www.PaintScratc... founder Collin Harris demonstrates how to use a touch up paint pen to repair a small scratch on his ranch truck. Paint pens are the perfect product for touching up scratches and chips that are less than the width of a pencil eraser.
    Here is the touch up paint pen process:
    1. Safety First: Before starting, we recommend you wear a dual-cartridge respirator and protective gloves and clothing. And be sure to work in a ventilated workspace.
    2. Practice!: This is the single most important step. Use a practice surface such as a metal can or a glossy sheet of paper and be sure to practice with each of the paint pens.
    3. Cleanliness: Apply a small amount of wax and grease remover to a clean rag. Thoroughly wipe the scratch and surrounding area. If you do not clean the area, the touch-up paint won’t adhere properly.
    4. Apply Primer (if necessary): If you’re fixing scratches down to an unpainted surface, use the primer paint pen as the first layer.
    5. Apply Basecoat: The basecoat is the touch up paint color that matches your vehicle. Apply the paint as evenly as possible. Use light layers to evenly coat the scratch. Allow the surface to dry before adding another layer of paint
    6. Apply Clearcoat: The clearcoat is the top layer that protects your basecoat from damage. Apply the clearcoat in light layers, allowing the surface to dry completely before adding another layer.
    7. Polish with Rubbing Compound: The rubbing compound is used to polish the clearcoat.

    A good tip; If your scratch is just a very small line or circle, use a hole puncher on a small bit of cardboard and tape that to your surface so the hole is over the scratch. The less you can affect the "good" surrounding paint, the better.

    I thought you just had to buy the pen & swish over the scratch. This is all too hard! I'm just gonna buy a new car.

    Ok so why do your preset kits not include the primer pen? Bought the kit recommended and now found out I need this magical "primer pen" from this video.

    This really worked. I cannot believe it. I tried on my rear bumper which had few minor scratches from moving boxes, so just surface scratch. All the repair shop said you cannot buff it out on rear bumper due to its plastic and tell me to bring it in for a $500 repaint job. So I decided to give it try, it turns out it actually worked on 80% of the area that had scratch. I will reapply the touch up paint then clear coat again on the remaining 20% then try again to see if I can get to 20% out. After this, then I will try my hood which is metal with a rock chip. So far, it is looking promising. Takes a little practice and it works.

    I saw a lot of touch-up videos on UA-cam and they all looked subpar. This one looks amazing so I tried it. And everytime I tried to smooth it over it looked bad. Color was off or it was bumpy. I gave up. Tried again on a new scratch a year later and thought it was subpar but better than with the scratch showing. Then I took a white t-shirt and rubbed it down really hard a week later, and presto - any trace of the scratch was gone! This really works - but it is a pain in the ass.

      Tried to, but couldn't control the amount of paint coming out of the pen well enough to get it flush. The pen worked okay for small specks of missing paint, but not for the pinky-length scratch I had.

    Thanks for posting this. We have a brand new Jeep that my neighbor's kid has opened their door into twice. The first time they did it hard enough to dent the door and chip the paint. This morning I saw the second mark and luckily it's just paint transfer. I hate that I have to touch up the car already, but this video is really helpful. Ordering paint now!

      CurvoExpedio The paint needs time to "gas out" or dry properly. A layer of wax over the paint will slow down the process. Although if youre painting a tiny stone chip it shouldnt make much of a difference to the final result.

    Hey can you recommend a video or solution other than full paint to repair touch up paint repair work that well was not all that great? Put on real thick and was not a good match or maybe not shaken all that well. The car is an 03 that pretty much lived in the garage but with 50,000 miles I'm sure theres fade as well. Thanks

      It’s been a few years so hopefully you see this; did you apply the paint a little above the scratch on your car and buff it back out to even with the rubbing compound like in the video? If so did it work?

    I think a pen striping brush works well as you can control the paint better into the smallest of grouges
    .

    • @Paintscratch
      @Paintscratch  8 років тому

      If you have experience then you probably have a favorite way of applying touchup paint. I like the pen, but for a perfect job, I'd always spray the paint.

    • @lclaughton
      @lclaughton 8 років тому

      For all the dings this car has, a complete paint job would be more advisable. But in many instances it would be impractical to re-spray your car every time you got a few blems in the paint. That would make no sense. But this paint stick thing this guy is using does not impress me at all. You do not have the control you would have if you used a quality pen strip brush which will let you put just a delicate bit of paint to fill a blemish.

    Have you guys tried using compound to remove the extra layer of paint? I'm feel a bit timid to do so thinking i will strip the paint in the process. Do you wash the surface area with water or soap + water afterwards (after using compound)? I got some myguirs compound at home and scratch cream too. Any suggestions on how to go about it?

    Ive got about an inch little scrape on my bumper at the very bottom.Its pissed me off a little as i just bought the car in showroom condition for £17,000.I went very gently up a kerb,but that kerb was a little too high.But i dont think it will need a professional to put it right,it is a very small repair repair job,the scratch is so small its hardly noticeable.I`ll just either sand it a little,prime and top coat it or use a scratch pen.

    In all fairness dude, next time use another color vehicle other than white b\c we all know that the primer is white just like the white paint on car. Try it on red, black, green or gray and than maybe you will convince me how great your product is.

    How long should I wait for the primer to dry to add the paint and how long should I wait for the paint to dry before applying another coat of paint? Also can I use rubbing alcohol to clean the surface? I ordered the pen kit and primer, I just feel I can use rubbing alcohol to clean the surface. Thank you this video is very helpful!

    I don’t really car how well it matches. I just don’t want that tiny amount of rust where the scratches are to spread. Also when water and salt gets in there because mines near the coast, the rust sort of drools down the paint of the car. Looks really bad considering my car is only a 2006

    A bit disappointed. I got their paint pen kit which says has everything you need for eraser sized chips, now this video says I need to have primer? Why was it not included in the kit to begin with? Now I have to order separately and wait.
