The DCEU is the shared movie universe, distributed by Warner Bros, for DC's iconic superheroes like Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman.
The movies in the franchise so far have been Man of Steel (2013), Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), Suicide Squad (2016), Wonder Woman (2017) and Justice League (2017).
It's fair to say it hasn't gone as smoothly as the people behind it would have liked - only Wonder Woman has truly been universally liked - and in this documentary, we'll take a look at why that's been the case.
Factors include there not being one person driving the franchise, the lack of consistency in terms of the movies' formulas, and the rushed nature of the franchise's bigger installments.
It also hasn't helped matters that the franchise is regularly compared to the Dark Knight Trilogy (which it directly followed), the TV Arrowverse (which proves live action DC projects CAN still be fantastic), and the Marvel Cinematic Universe (DC's direct rivals who are totally nailing the movie thing right now).
But there IS still time to reverse the franchise's fortunes - and they can start this year with Aquaman, which has the potential to be fantastic if it's done right!
There's so much untapped potential in DC's comic books, just waiting to be adapted into awesome movies!
We hope you enjoy the video! Please leave a comment letting us know what you thought about it. And don't forget to subscribe to Screen Rant's UA-cam channel, so you never miss our great new video uploads in the future.

The problem with the DCEU is that they are trying too hard to play catch up. MCU has built itself, and has a lot of backstories to go with their characters. DCEU, is just rushed, they need to slow down and just take their time introducing the characters, and building backstories.

Totally agree, BvS and Justice League is just too damn rush eventually they ruined the universe itself. A good way to start is like Man of Steel, Suicide Squad, Wonder Women, Aquaman, Shazam, all the solo superhero movie first.

Ronnie, hit nail on head. Why was Cyborg (who is that????) and Flash (know him but not well -- don't know background story) so quick to be introduced? Why not just BM, WW, and SM fail maybe -- just by themselves. Then, they need more superheroes. But, it just happened too quick, in my opinion. Slow the movie down some. But, I love DC and want DCEU to survive and do really well.

That is your opinion and not a fact, as your statement implies. With the passing of time, Marvel becomes better and better, whereas DC is getting worse and worse. That does not mean that Marvel does not have bad films, nor that DC does not have good ones, but their greatest majority is remarkably different. Had DC taken it's time, they would have only made Marvel better. It is beyond any doubt that competition forces Marvel to constantly improve itself. On the other hand, competition forces DC to surprise us with it's lack of professionalism and quality. And before someone reaches that conclusion, no, i am not a Marvel fan. I am not a DC fan, either. I am a movies fan.

My only issue with the Animated Movies is that I'm so sick of Batman. It feels like DC shoves him in, and he always has to be either a key part of the story or he puts up the best fight or show off what a 'badass' he is. Like, when he put up a better fight against Doomsday than the actual superhumans, I rolled my eyes. When he was in Justice League Dark, I genuinely started cursing. It's like DC doesn't trust their own characters to stand on their own without Batman hanging around somewhere.

Yes HeatleyBros It was sickening when they decided to have Batman kill people. The whole DCEU is going to hell. My favorite remake over the years? Batman Begins trilogy. All three were well written, included back stories that gave us a new, fresh perspective of the Bat. Great casting such as Heath Ledger (RIP) legendary actor Morgan Freeman and Christian Bale - who took the role to a new level. I do however love the original 1989 Batman with amazing actors Michael Keaton and and Jack Nicholson (who stole the movie with his untouchable acting.)

The problem is simple. Characters and stories. I know we all heard the excuses a million times. "too gloomy" "bad CGI" "not enough ____" but here's the thing, we'll forgive all of that for a good movie. And what makes a good movie is a great story with interesting characters. That's why you can go back to the original Superman. While it was cutting-edge at the time, the effects today seem quaint but a good story with interesting characters will carry a movie.
There's no substitute for that. Look at the Transformers series. The effects in that movie are top-notch. The Transformers look incredible. Young Felman would've creamed his young pants if he saw them 20 years ago. But that can't make up for the fact that the characters are practically non-existent and the story is such a convoluted mess I don't even think the people making the movies know what's going on. Sure, they can make money with action. But if you're going to create a universe, like Marvel, you can't rely on just that. People come to see Marvel movies to see their favorite characters and fall in love with new ones and see what adventures they're going on next.

Batman Begins and Superman Returns should’ve started the DC Cinematic Universe. Warner Brothers made a mistake not combining the two worlds together.
Both movies were one year apart from each other. Both movies were fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with fans and critics. Both movies looked and felt like they could’ve been in the same universe. Both movies brought the two most popular superheroes back on the big screen after a long hiatus.
Superman Returns referenced Gotham City. Not to mention, it grossed more money at the box office than Batman Begins whose sequels went on to hit the one billion dollar mark.
I Am Legend teased a crossover between them for May 2010. The billboard in Times Square had Bale’s Batman logo and Routh’s Superman logo merged together.

I agree with Screen Rant -Superman should not be that dark. Superman like Captain America should be beacon of heroic ideals rather than a brooding man. The whole point was to contrast with Batman rather than 2 depressing heroes butting head, which BvS ended up being. And BvS had sloppy writing. Clark Kent works at a newspaper, and he does not know Bruce Wayne? Especially since they wrote Metropolis and Gotham to be neighboring cities. Really? I don't agree with Zack Snyder's direction and style, but he and his team does good casting with Gal Gadot and Ben Affleck. And I totally agree that studio carry most of the blame. MCU took years to get to where they are. Warner Brothers wanted to cash in without doing the work. As they say, learn to walk before you try to run; else, you fall in your face, which DC did.

The bubble-headed henchmen were supposed to be parademons, and the big bad in the movie was supposed to be Steppenwolf. David Ayer has even said in tweets that the movie was a train wreck and not the movie he made. Zack had a great franchise going, and he's a huge fan of the characters so he would've done them justice, Execs saw MARVEL raking in money and just wanted a carbon copy. It's a shame that WB couldn't see beyond the bottom line and the skewed (IMO) rotten tomatoes scores to let Snyder finish his amazing vision.

That's what happens when you don't have producers that actually read comic books or go into anal detail of the characters. This is where you see how much the Director cares about what he's making. Justice League that we got was clearly a product to try and match the Marvel franchise success and it got rushed instead of giving it time. Marvel had Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, The Hulk and Black Panther all before making the first Avengers Movie, and all of those individual films were a success. DC made Green Lantern (A CGI disaster, which only had a brief appearance in the battle scene), the Batman Trilogy was a masterpiece and directed by an actual master in Christopher Nolan, Man of Steel was great and that's pretty much it. We only get Superman and Batman again until Wonder Woman sort of saves DC for about 5 months until Justice League covers it in gasoline and throws a match on it while Marvel laughs in the background. Marvel had a vision of all the movies eventually leading towards Infinity War while the DC movies were all just individual pieces, some horrible, some great. And if Aquaman shits the bed like Justice League did, then it's pretty much donezo for DC. They would have to start over and reboot the entire franchise. Personally I think all the leading characters she have had their own movie before making Justice League. It was rushed like hell.

Marvel seems to be in its prime at the moment with the big live actions movies, but DC seemed to have used up most of its magic in the DCAU - things like Batman Mask Of The Phantasm will always be amongst DC's greatest movies ever, live action or animated

They have their studio, it's a division of WB, Just like marvel is a division of Disney. Not only that, but Marvel was able to create their universe, without owning the rights to many of their most beloved characters. X-Men, Spiderman, Fantastic Four, Silver Surfer, Galactus, Dr Doom. Yet they were able to use lesser known characters, like The GoG, Black Panther, and Doctor Strange and make them household names. DC owns the rights to 3 of the most iconic superheroes of all time, as well as rest of their characters, given that they didn't have to sell any of theirs, due to money concerns, like Marvel. So, they just suck at casting, and storytelling.

The MCU, was purchased by Disney after the first Ironman Film, was made. You know the same Disney that owns, the the rights to such franchises like, Toy Story, Cars, The Jungle Book, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Star Wars. Of the all current MCU heroes please name how many critically and commercially successful films, were made before Kevin Feige, Disney's hire? 0, Spiderman was owned by Sony, and still is, but Marvel managed to work a deal to use the character, the Hulk is owned by Universal, again Marvel worked a deal to work him into their films as well. All this was done after they were purchased by Disney. And in case you didn't know. When a company purchases an asset like Marvel, they determine the new direction the acquired company goes in, which usually means the old staff is fired. Finally, the same studio made the Dark Knight Trilogy I didn't hear any complaints than. But now their movies are garbage I hear tired excuses. For the record, I was George Reeves Superman fan, an Adam West Batman fan, I loved all 4 Christopher Reeves Superman films even, yes even the bad ones, I grew up watching the Super friends, loved the idea of Wonder Woman's invisible jet. Loved Linda Carter in the WW show. Michael Keaton's Batman, was one of the first films saw in the theater and owned as a kid, saw every 90's Batman, Kilmer and Clooney. Adored Batman the animated series. The adventures of Superman. Lois and Clark, Justice League, and JLU unlimited, Batman Beyond, and every animated film, DC has released thus far. Point being. I was a bigger DC fan than Marvel, and I've forgotten more about their cinematic and or television filmography, than most of their modern apologist will ever know. But I won't make weak excuses when someone tries to sell a garbage product. Feel free to attempt, to not sound hypocritical, given, that DC had a successful cinematic formula, when Marvel was failing or barely treading water, and DC garnered praise. Yet now that Marvel is successful, and DC is a joke. It's because poor DC doesn't have it's own studio, and Marvel, which is owned by Disney, somehow, still does, even though, they don't. Thank you, I needed a good laugh.

Here's the point, Marvel didn't have the iconic star power of Batman, Superman or Wonder Woman to build a universe on. So they had to use characters like Iron Man, who was an unknown to many non comic book fans. So they had to find a skilled actor, who could set the tone, and carry the narrative. RDJ killed it. The rest is history. DC relied almost exclusively on IP. That's why their movies suck, I don't care about their characters, because they didn't give me a reason to care. DC doesn't need their own studio, they need one head, like Feige, with a vision. They gave Snyder, who's great at bringing comic book panels to life, creative control. Like he was Nolan. Which he's not. They gave the keys to the kingdom, to someone not adept at storytelling, or casting. The two things, Marvel has consistently used to draw non comic fans to their films. That's the reality.

No, it's not. It has nothing to do with the failure of the DCEU. The failure of the DCEU is not tonal; it's internal. It's because the movies that were made weren't thought of as one coherent story that can exist on its own. If the DCEU actually was like The Dark Knight trilogy, we would have a much better set of movies, because The Dark Knight trilogy was a self-contained series of films that did not rely on franchise-building as its main intent. The DCEU failed because it tried to be like the MCU, and it's a fact. Most bad things from the DCEU came from it trying to be like the MCU.

I agree with you that much of the DCEU's problems comes from trying to be like the MCU.
To clarify, I think TheBlackSage7's point about the Dark Knight Trilogy's dark and gritty style not meshing with many characters is accurate. Making things more realistic is fine. Look at how many MCU characters reimagine classic comic book costumes in such a way that they actually look like something you might wear (e.g. in the First Avenger once Captain America becomes active on missions, his goofy spandex-like outfit gets replaced by stuff that could conceivably be worn by someone in the military while still resembling the comic costume). Making things dark, gritty and/or downright downbeat really goes against someone whose whole shtick is optimism and hope like Superman.
That overly dour tone is one of the things that really turned me off the DCEU movies, because I felt like there's no light at the end of the tunnel. If I grew up with the DCEU's version of the Kents, then I probably would be a bitter, selfish guy who resents having to use my talents for other people. Once that asshole version of Jonathan Kent stated that it might've been better to let those school kids die so Clark could keep his secret, I knew I was in for a rough ride.

@@antona.1327 Modern day comics killed off the new 52 Superman and brought back the Pre crisis Superman for this very reason. What I'm referring to has not come and gone. It's a staple of Supermans Identity. For Superman things are reversed. Superman is his true identity and Clark is the costume he shows the world.

Just to start: it's not DC it's Warner. That's the greatest differential to Marvel. Marvel Studios made the first movies and even after the company had been sold to Disney the same people keeps control of the productions. People who know Marvel characters. To me Warner started it wrong by choosing Snyder and put him in charge of all DCEU. Snyder clearly didn't understand Superman and other DC characters. Not to mention the interfering of Warner executives.

Agreed. Doing action scenes Snyder is great but character dev...no. BvS made no sense to me. The motivation for Bats to kill Supes I just didn't get. For as smart as Batman is shown to be in the comics it made next to know sense why he was targeting Supes and putting all the blame on Supes. It was like he was jealous. Totally inaccurate interpretation of the character imo.

I don't like the arrowverse, the plot is all over the place getting twisted shredded and glued back together and the characters are an emotional train wreck with their friends loving them and hating them back and forth, after a while the shows became too cringeworthy for me to watch.

What made the DCEU very interesting with the first two movies is that it explored how could the world react to superheroes (especially with bvs) which is a question that the MCU rushed in the first part of civil war, 8 years after their first movie. The DCEU was promoting a very more realistic version of superheroes that could allow to more identify ourselves with the world described in their movies, in opposite to the MCU. Batman V Superman was not a universally hated motion picture, it's just that it divided a lot of people. In opposite to the MCU where the ratings are pretty homogeneous, a movie like Batman v Superman which divides critics is more interesting to debate on because of the many risks that Snyder and the screenwriters have taken to lead this movie (making a dark version of superman, etc). I think that a movie which divides point of views is much more interesting to study than a movie that just makes the majority appreciate it and then forget it a few weeks later (as for example the MCU; but there are some exceptions like Avengers, Iron Man which are unforgettable).

Great documentary and seems objectively focused on the DCEU. One critique, though, is the awful volume mix. I have a good volume listening to the narration and suddenly a boom of special FX in transition blasts my ears. It’s like watching an 80’s action movie where the characters are talking and then your TV almost explodes from the following action scene’s volume. But that’s all. Thanks for your work!

Wonder woman was average. I don't understand DC's obsession with Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad. She has no power. No fighting skills unless Hollywood says so and she only has a clown hammer. Just a ridiculous character that should have been a psychotic sidekick next to Joker and not on a team of super powered characters.

A-list actors, Great source materials, but terrible directors/writers really dooms not only the movies but the WB budget.
Wheras Marvell focuses first on a script/director and THEN gets up-and-coming actors to make a name for themselves.
Like, the DCU does does things ass-backwards and it murdered their budget. This is why you don't let marketing run the initial production.
