      I hope you got to see it live. I was able to in 2006, NOLA. The crowd didn’t make a peep other than a random drunk here and there. Total respect for those involved with the loss and awe for the performance.

      Me too. A 52 year old stubborn dude who rarely shows emotion, but I swear I get so choked up every time. I think it’s because i not only deeply sympathize for him or anyone for that matter who’s lost their mother, but I feel like it’s prepping me for the day when my beautiful mother has to pass on.

    My mother passed away in 2020 after suffering a stroke and being paralyzed and mute for 18 years. We read the lyrics "Shake your fist at the gate...give me my wings" at her funeral. Probably not too many 72 year olds have TOOL lyrics read at their funeral 😪

    These two songs are a tribute (eulogy) to his mother, Judith Marie, who spent over 27 years in a wheelchair, but never lost her faith in the lord… something Maynard struggled to accept.
    In this album he reconciles those feelings.

    Arguably one of the most hauntingly beautiful, masterful pieces of music ever composed. This song, lyrically and musically, allows you to feel every emotion associated with loss… the anguish, the fear, the rage… both individually and all at once. Absolutely spectacular and wrenching

      I've often described it as his soul, laid bare. And yes, it's an internal journey through grief. I saw an interview with him. He used her ashes in the soil at his plantation, so every vine that grows has a little bit of Marie in it.

    Wings&10,000 are part 3&4 of Maynard coming to terms with his mothers condition and death.
    #1 Jimmy (tool-Aenima)
    #2 Judith (A Perfect Circle)
    In Jimmy, his reference to 11 is about his mother being paralyzed by an aneurysm (for 27 years/10,000 days until her death) when he was 11 years old.

    I’ve seen a lot of bands and I’ve seen tool 8 times. But there was no other experience like seeing these two songs played live. I was 100% lost in the music. It was at night, outdoors, the crowd, the band, the music, and myself were like one thing. It was wild.

      Interesting and if it is good for you then by all means enjoy. However most of what I hear when this is done with out modifying the audio it turns out to be messy. with the 2 parts being written in the same time & key it makes sense there would be some overlap.

    I am so late to react, but in the s cond part, wings for Marie, -Marie was his mom and she suffered in pain and non-functioning for 10,000 days. She was very religious. Maynard loves his mom beyond belief and pretty much thought she was a saint. And all the stuff about "you're going home" (to heaven) and Maynard wonders why he was given her "torch/light" but he uses it in respect to his mom's beliefs to use his light to guide her path to heaven. And the line "give me my, give me my wings"- he believes that his mother truly deserves wings to fly on to heaven.

    My best friend passed away and he was so very sick and took his own life by shotgun because his pain from his fluid in his lungs and shear pain was just too much. Doctor's told him he should live to about 16, but at 21 he was still wonderful. But he just couldn't take the physical pain, nor the "waiting "of his parents to watch him die from his disease, so he chose his own death. It ruined me. And though I am angry with him, I am so very happy he is at peace. R I P. Jim.😅

    I always heard it as "Ignorant flippants in the congregation", using flippant as a noun to denigrate his mothers' church congregation further as if they do not understand and do not care and are just not truly serious about God and faith as his mother truly was. Lyrics online are often wrong and are rarely posted by the music creators themselves. Another example of bad lyrics you have there is with the line you read as "so who could deny you were the one who eliminated your little piece of the divine" (maybe you did say illuminated, hard to tell), but I always heard that lyric as "...the one who illuminated MY little piece of the divine". It ties in better with the preceding lines about the little light of mine a gift she passed onto him and ties in well with Maynards disillusion with, and downright hatred of early on, the church. She though was the one divine thing illuminated in this whole dark congregation of misguided "faithful" in that church. She was the light who gave him the light, a little piece of true faith and it helped him come back around on God or at least on understanding his mother and her steadfastness in adversity.

    • @markwillis675

      Another part of the story that I heard. Right or wrong. Is that the congregation blamed Judith Marie for her condition. Saying she didn't believe string enough. So this was God's way of punishment.

    • @robertsaterlie4124
      @robertsaterlie4124 5 місяців тому

      @@markwillis675 I think I heard that as well. If so that is even worse and I can understand Maynard's animosity towards them and the church in general. The church and the men who run them are fallible, do not blame God for the weaknesses of men. With the gift of free will many a mistake have been made, though never should those mistakes be attributed to God directly. It is tough battle mentally to understand when things like this happen to good people. So very sad.

    I'd add MJK was mad at his Mom's congregation because in this moment of his mom's passing. Their takeaway was that if she was a better Christian, God wouldn't have punished her in this way. But as she followed the path seemingly better than any of them, it was a Judas betrayal of Judith and their faith at once.

  • @thepooz7205
    @thepooz7205 5 місяців тому

    I don’t know where you pulled lyrics from, but they are quite off.
    Examples:
    “ignorant siblings” is “ignorant fibbers” - in context it is members of the congregation that lie about how devout they are, because devoutness is a measure of status among the congregation in the church. I see others saying flippants instead of fibbers here in the comment section, but don’t think that fits in context. He wrote another song called Flippant and I think people are retroactively hearing it here too. Plus “flippants” is not a word.
    “Eliminated .. little piece of the divine” is actually “illuminated”. Soon after he quotes “this little light of mine” which follows from the illuminated lyric.
