When this came out, I watched it in my car (giant headphone set). I played it for a guy I work with on a lunch break who was a tool fan in his 50’s. He said after: “Now what do we do? I need a cigarette…”.
So many Tool reactors are all like "sorry for how long this is, are you really going to listen to a 50 minute long back to back comparison of studio to live breakdown?" Yes. Yes i am.
Adam Jones was once asked why he doesn’t move around much on stage. I don’t have a direct quote, but he was like “Eff off, I’m counting and calculating the whole time. This isn’t easy.”
@@Spinosaurus4ever it makes sense. The counting involved is ridiculous. Playing against polyrhythms and syncopation isn’t the easiest of tasks. His name is Danny Carey and he's a master of polyrythms. Part of why he's known as "the octopus" is for using all limbs to create beautiful percusions, the other reason is he can keep at least 4 patterns going at one time, 5 if he drops his shorts :)

My interpretation of “one foot nailed down” is that we are born with natural curiosity and wonder and a desire to soar to new heights and experiences; but we are bound by the limitations of our flesh and fears.
Bound by the responsibilities, real and perceived, that we take in and internalize. Most of these "responsibilities" are delusions and self-inflicted prisons of our ego that bind our potential. Fear of failing those responsibilities is part of the binding mechanism.

Let's watch some itw of Danny Carey, the drummer, he says something ESSENTIAL (it's not precisely their own words, but...) : "A good drummer doesn't just play patterns, he plays MUSIC." So, the entire approach of the way he plays drums, the way he arranges his drums parts is defined by this.
Adam Jones told a story how they brought in drummers from other bands like SOAD AND Rage against the machine and they asked Adam if the drums were multiple tracks mixedand he said "nope that's just Danny playing." And they were like WTF, he's a f'n Alien. You can see the 4 different patterns and time signatures at the same time.

FYI, the band records the music and arrangement for Maynard to then write lyrics to accompany. Its backwards from most songwriting. Maynard is inspired by the music just like we are 8).
Someone probably already wrote this, but the 3 guys that compose the music spent a minimum of 5+ years composing and creating these masterpieces in the studio like a regular job. Danny recounts this in an interview from a few years back. So, how they came up with it? LOTS of long, hard work that pays off when you are so musically talented and creative. A vocalist isn't really much help during the writing process of music like this. Its not like he could just tell the instrumentalists how to jam together, and he wouldn't know what to sing until the instrumentation is mostly ready.

Danny Carey just doing what he does best on them drums.
0:33 - As long as it takes! We are TOOL fans.. As long as it takes! :D
Vibrational healing on a spiritual level. Don't fight it. Magic, actual not literal. Hehehe
Welcome to the TOOL family my friend!
GO TO THE SHOW!!!!! I just got back...absolutely amazing
Danny Carey The king of polyrythym
This was my most favorite Toolgasm!!
I believe Danny was 59 yrs old on that tour.
The grudge!
I've heard Tool referred to as "Math Metal". I thought that was pretty accurate.
Got'um ... another Tool Army recruit enlisted...first orders, Spiral Out Keep Going!
Solid comments. Welcome.
You should watch Third eye live. Old skool Tool, magnificent performance.
I could watch it again and again. It never hets ild watching someones brain explode discovering tool. Danny Carey is unmatched. The whole band is from another planet.
I am very excited that my son and I are seeing Tool in February in Austin. Danny Carey has elevated up to Neal Pert status. He is arguably the top 3 percussionists in the world (Neal Pert, Danny Carey, Stewart Copeland).
Mugs- what a great reaction. Spiritual. There’s a fantastic video of him playing this as well. A real drum cam.
I loved going on this journey with you!
Dude, his sticks are moving so fast at times, the camera can't catch it all. Absolutely bananas 🍌
The Jackie chan of drums 🤣👌🏼
37:16 WHAAAT?! Made me laugh. That's such a genuine reaction to greatness. Love it! Danny makes it look effortless. Almost makes everyone else think they can do it too.
31:48 - Those are "Mandala Drums".. They have like 128 different stirike points and 128 different strike streanghts.. And yeah, Danny Carey was there to develope them. :D
The Larry Bird 33 represents the verse time signature of 33/16
It's like a 2 part buildup. The bass comes in to add more depth in part 2.
Only certain humans can perform this level of wizardry .
Since you enjoy TOOL I can't wait for you to experience MJK'S other projects, Puscifer and A Perfect Circle, you will not be disappointed
47:11 A glimpse of Maynard in the background !
He's playing in Boston @ the Gahden for this recording, I was there for this live, insane, he wears a B Ball jersey consistent with whatever arena he's playing at. Danny's Mainly a Lakers and Kansas fan. I believe.
Dude for the love of god listen to Danny Carey's 2002 version of Triad. There's a drum cam video on UA-cam and it's legendary.
You're an official Tool army member now. Now you know how we felt when we first experienced Tool
For me Tool is like candy for the brain, the songs stimulate all the neurons
