Self Sufficient Me is based on our small 3-acre property/homestead in SE Queensland Australia about 45kms north of Brisbane - the climate is subtropical (similar to Florida). I started Self Sufficient Me in 2011 as a blog website project where I document and write about backyard food growing, self-sufficiency, and urban farming in general. I love sharing my foodie and DIY adventures online so come along with me and let's get into it! Cheers, Mark :) - Навчання та стиль
Thanks Mark. I watch many gardeners but I always come back to you as a favourite. You don't waste time on useless information or self promotion. I like the way you explain things and show results. A genuine guy :-)
I am keeping all these ideas tucked away in my brain for when I finally have my own house and the space to have projects like this. Thanks for sharing!
Good luck, it's really a great goal to have. I have a half acre, that's plenty for me.
@@nancyfahey7518 me too😢😢😢😢
same here. lets make it happen .
You were very honest in your criticism of your carpentry skills.
Hey Mark, I’ve been following your channel for a few years now and we are finally getting into starting our garden at home. Thanks for all the great content! It has helped us feel confident in getting started. 😃
Once again fella ~ Love All that you do 👍🏼🙏🏻👍🏼👍🏼 better than the TV.. ( Blessings from the UK)..
Should be Taught in Schools I Say .
Thank you SO MUCH for this video! We have been talking about growing snake gourds and snake beans and other food plants that need trellis and we really needed this instruction video. You did a great job with this project and I thank you very much.
Good job mate ! Thank you for all your video ! i'm a neighbour for New-Caledonia, same climat as your and your joy of gardening is contagious !
I always love watching your videos. You're really personable.
Thank you so much for this video.
This is the best garden bed that I have seen and will be trying from a first-time garden builder!
Hi mark, I love all your videos and your garden is beautiful. I live in the USA and under a layer of ice at the moment but I'm excited to get my garden started in the spring it's my first time having any space for any plants I have been watching your videos. Your videos are great not over complicated but filled with tons of great information. Keep up the great work!
We are in the process of improving on our trellis and raised beds. Gourd and luffas are among our favorite vegetables. You provided several tips that I am sure my husband would find helpful as we improve on our raised bed and trellis. Thanks for sharing
My husband and I are big fans of your videos. I am very surprised and happy to see you growing Chinese Loofa guards. I am a Chinese and I am growing it in my garden right now too at Florida. Just a little Information to share about this nutritious and yummy plant with you. This veggie grows very well in the southern part of China. It is a heat lover. It is one of the popular summer vegetables over there. Cook it like you cook the zucchinis, but be sure to peel the ridges down to the green skin level. Do not need to peel the green skin. Cut it into sections (2-3 inches long each), then quarter each one, wash it, then stir fried it with beef along with ginger, garlic, onion, oyster sauce, salt and pepper to taste. It will be done when you know the inside almost become transparent (don’t cook it til complete clear. It will loose the wonderful texture by doing so.) I will highly recommend growing this plant in your own garden because it is easy to grow, very minimum maintenance, most of all it is so yummy when you cook it right😋
Wow it’s amazing 😊 love gourd tunnel
love this! i saw a business insider video on roman grapes and they are grown like this! i immediatelly thought, well, that could be done with gourds probably.... glad you tested it first! great video
❤ the gourd tunnel!
Great idea...thanks for sharing!😊
you did a fine job and it's nice of you to share your wonderful ideas. I enjoyed watching and will use your tips. Thank you!
Absolutely gourd-geous Mark!
Hi Mark and thank you!!! for this video!!! I love to watch your videos and learn from you. Your humor and obvious joy you get from gardening and sharing your knowledge is so refreshing to watch. Continuing best wishes to you and yours!!!!!
By the way Mark, I especially appreciate this video as now I can see how to incorporate it in my garden with my cattle panels and rebar. Although I presently us the tubs cattlemen use for salt I think, then resell back to the co ops, so they come to about just below the knee and when filled with soil are heavy enough to keep the cattle panels in place creating an arch way that is very strong support for veggie plants that need that extra support, and they last for a very long time, I prefer your structure to mine. I am always looking for a way to work smarter more than harder and the aesthetics in your garden are eye candy and more!!
You crack my eggs man! Your videos are my fave 🤙🏻 this year I'm regrowing a head of Romain lettuce, onions, celery, & potatoes like you did in one of your videos.
I am following lots of your ideas. i was tired with bamboo and wooden stick temporary structures. I am going to make this tomorrow. Thank you very much.
That's an impressive Gourd Tunnel. Ridge Gourd is one of my favorites for 30 years. Very nice Indian curry and mouth-watering chutney can be cooked. I will try growing Ridge Gourd in the UK in my small garden. Thank you for the video.
I've recently found your channel. It's highly recomendable. And helps me to understand english, because you speak very clear. Thanks
Looking fantastic and beautiful wow job so well done congratulations sir and keep up the good works I love your luffas grower and your vegetables gardens thanks for sharing 👍
Love love love ♥️💛💚💯been watching and taking notes for a year🙌🏾💫✨👌🏾 you've helped me change my garden 🌱🌴🍏
Superb Sir👍
You are really very encouraging.
God Bless you🙏
Omg this is the best!!!!! It’s so versatile you can use it for peas or beans or even grapes
When I was a child growing up in North Texas, we had a tunnel trellis structure on the back of our house. It had grapes on it every summer and provided awesome shade for playing in the back yard. We moved to East Texas before I was 9 years old and when I went back years later to visit, the new owners had torn it all down to expand the house. I was heart broken to say the least.
Looking good Mark!
Hope you and you're family had a good Australia day yesterday!
If you grow them into large size butternut pumpkin shape, you can dry and store them for a yr or 2, they can make beautiful little bird houses! 😊
I love the idea of this tunnel. It grows vertically and provides shade relief to understory plants. Lol you crack me up “ you can’t handle the heat” 😊
good day to you my gardening friend, excellent video on your gourd tunnel trellis today Mark !!
Love the ideas of raising the raised beds up to waist height. Great idea!
We are thinking of putting in 2 raised beds with trellises for tomatoes before spring. Watching your builds and garden vlogs are always so encouraging! All the best from the clay banks in Alabama, USA.
This is a GREAT idea. I've been looking for something natural to plant near the chicken coop to provide shade & add a pretty quality to the area. The top of our run broke over the winter due to heavy snow so it has to be replaced. NOW I've decided to use the page wire on top, add a large feed troth in front for the raised bed and add some summer squash, zucchini squash, eggplant, green beans ?, Acorn butternut & table queen squash, and some bird house gourds! 2 long troths (one on each side) will provide shade & all our squash for the year! Amazing, thanks!
Love your trellis. You inspired to build one next year!!
That is amazing! Iʻm having gourd tunnel envy... thanks for all your awesome vids!
You are an inspiration! I love watching your videos man!
Hi Mark, I built one and it works :-) I am impressed at how the pumpkin vine just got stronger as the pumpkin grew!
Good inspiration here. I only have a narrow strip of garden bed but I am keen to grow bitter gourds.
That is amazing!! Love your ideas!
saving this. As i plan to make one this weekend for my luffahs. Thanks so much!
Beautiful work still and that's a great idea.
Great Job!!!!!!!!,....thank you for sharing. It will be my project in 2020. Totally fantastic, I see that at first time and think about all positive features.
I love your videos - always cool. Your yard is amazing!
You did a really good job. Yes nibbler makes work so much easier. I hope its lasts for years to come.
Great concept, great ideas sir...
Great video, gives me great ideas for my homestead
Wonderful thank you for sharing
Hello from Virginia U.S.A. I love both your channels, they are, you are inspirational. Thank you. I had no idea you could eat goards.
Another Great video-Thanks Mark from the heart of Texas!
Another awesome video Mark and I'm really loving the humour that you're injecting into these vids... I did laugh at the "Oh My Gourd... Tunnel" and the "You can't handle the heat". Anyways, the actual description and build of the tunnel was perfect, easy to understand and the results speak for themselves. A thumbs up from me mate. Cheers Adam
This project is perfect!!!
love your videos, keep up the great work mate
The bitter gourd contains Quinine just like tonic water. You can reduce the bitter by slicing thin and salting, then rinse and squeeze out the water. You can also blanch in boiling water and drain before using. They are very cooling in hot weather and excellent for cleaning the liver, especially when paired with turmeric. I wouldn’t mix into other stews as they over power other veg. The sweet ones are great in curries and soups( pairs well with pork or chicken). I buy bitter melon, but haven’t grown successfully yet. The white less bumpy ones are the least bitter. I’ve grown the sweet ones and the are wonderful. I use them in place of zucchini.
dude that's a really great idea. thanks!! i had a bunch left over from a garage build and wanted to use some for domes over raised beds in cold weather, but this is another super smart idea. if you have more tips on what and how to recycle materials around the yard I am all ears!! lol
Omg. I had to stop the video at the 0:07 mark because I was cracking up already. Your videos are my favorites!
Very informative. Thanks!
Very cool. I love gourds and love to see them hanging in tunnels like this. Try some of the hard shelled gourds of the genus Lagenaria. They are lovely and dry hard to be made into bottles, bowls, bird houses and musical instruments. Luffas make great sponges. This year I hope to grow Zuccas and African Wine Kettles.
I like it, nice. Here in the US I made a tunnel with 16 feet cattle panels and t posts in my raised bed garden and have a video on it as another idea easier to build. Tied it together with twine from hay bails.
This is the way to do it. Concrete reinforcement mesh is intended to be permanently encased in concrete so they don't bother to remove toxic metals like nickel and lead.
Another great video...cheers!
I always look forward to your videos
Wow i love vegetables and i love planting too
I love it! I think it turned out really cool.
Nice trellis, really good using recycled materials, I need to fix my gourd trellis
love. love. love. Thank you!
Hi Mark. I remember that in one your episodes/vlog you had suggested that you didn't particularly enjoy the bitter gourd. Try slicing them thin and deep frying them to a crip, with or without a batter coat - they are quite delicious! Ofcourse, scoop out the seeds/pith before slicing thin.
Hey Mark...I see you could live where I lived in Morayfield/Caboolture area...My kids are still in Burpengary and Dayboro...That stinky heat is why I left OZ...can't breathe for 8 months of the year in the humidity. Am going to build one of those square edged tunnels, right now. I just sat down, hunting for trellis ideas with my builders mesh from last year's mistakes I made with it...but that's how one learns! ...I want to make a "shade house" for softer veg that can't stand full sun. We get 3 months of very hot weather here in North East Hungary, but thankfully, only one or two humid days a year, so this square tunnel will be fab! Can't wait now to get outside when winter ends soon.
love the video mark and all the other content you put out on youtube
Well done
The Vietnamese build large elevated platforms like yours for growing all kinds of squash and gourds. Luffa, calabash, bitter melon, chayote, and other squashes grow very well from the elevated platform. The Asian long bean would grow very well on that structure as those vines easily grow from ten to twelve feet long and they are extremely prolific.
Lovely video.
Oh my gourd😂 love your garden gourd..
Very good job 👍
Thank you! On our little ranch in Emmett Idaho we always try reuse things around the ranch and check for free online. Best Day to you and yours this 2019! Faye Emmett Idaho
Great work!
Good job 👍🏼
I dont have nearly this much space, but i do have a spot about 2 meters long i can do a similar design. Thanks for the inspiration!
Thanks for the information. I don't have room next to my raised bed (another house is too close) to do the big trellis, but I reckon I can find a way to make a smaller one with the same idea.
Bitter melons are my fav vegetable. Been eating them (Chinese style) since I was 4 or 5 years old. I grow the gnarly long Indian variety. Bitter and astringent as all hell ! Yum !! Great video Mark 👍🏼
That's awesome man salute
Awesome tunnel Mark😘
Thanks for this vid i think im going to use the pvc vertical idea to hold up the side of the arch that will be the side of my house i rent . Save expense and drilling into the walls of the rental.
“You can’t handle the heat!” LOL that made me laugh. I’m going to use some cattle panels and arch them over from my one raised bed to the one next to it. I’ll use it for gourds, cucumbers and beans.
IT IS PERFECT
That tunnel is gourdeous looking.
Nice sharing
Great video!! Thumbs up from Canada!
Love the new intro!
I have a backyard patio I want to try to shade, using this method. I have 12+ ft. tall posts that used to support shade cloth that tore in the winter with the snow load and deteriorated in summer under the sun. That concrete wire would work better, and the gourds would die back in winter. Many thanks!
Just bought birdhouse gourd and luffa gourd seeds and I’m excited to get warm weather here in the US. Great video!!!
My wife planted two puffs seeds last year and got tons! Oh my they took over the place.
I planted birdhouse gourds and they did the same. Still have some up in the trees that I couldn't get.
Thank you so much for this. I grew gourds for the first time this year in UK . I didn’t think I could . I placed 2 large wooden containers 6 foot by 3 foot with 6 ft trellis parallel to each. Other and connected the top with bamboo sticks and wire mesh on top.. I am growing bottle gourd, snake gourd and Ivy Gourd. Lucky enough to have good harvest however not so much for bitter gourd . Ridge Gourd seeds did not germinate. Grateful for any tips for germinating RidgeGourd. Thanks
Hi there , i am asian Vietnamese love your trellis ,hope one day i can buy a home with extra space land can build trellis too , love the gardening look
I enjoyed the video, thanks for sharing. You can try to plant chockos...
GREAT JOB FROM NORTH CAROLINA
Pretty cool!
I don’t have the space you have, but you’ve inspired me to make a feature arch for cucamelons. Wish me luck!
I just came across your channel because one day I'd like to live self-sufficently and I wanna learn as much as possible as soon as possible. All your videos sound super interesting and I'm gonna watch them ALL and take notes.
Really don't understand why you don't have more subscribers and views haha
Also: if the world ever collapses I wanna be off the grid and live on a farm somewhere in the nowhere with my bunnies and chicken
GREAT VIDEO!
I’m wanting to grow and dry luffa/loofa gourds on my homestead. I could manage a small tunnel made of one 14’ cattle panel I think. I’ve used a similar method to make a turkey tractor.
Gourd I love your work . Seriously I do
That’s so cool!
