    Years ago, I tried a similar exercise on my balcony and window sills in London. I didn't grow anything like 580kg, but I did get up to 83kg, which didn't seem too bad from a small bit of concrete. I now grow in containers in a concrete front yard in the Newcastle upon Tyne - and you are inspiring me to measure the harvest again!

    • @HuwRichards
      @HuwRichards  Рік тому +8

      Wow that is awesome!! And measuring crops definitely put into perspective just how much everything adds up, and I think for a lot of people will make them realise that perhaps their garden is far more productive than they thought!

    AFAIK the well-groomed lawn in the house of the American Dream was originally a status symbol for rich people who didn't have to cultivate their own fields to feed themselves. Now this garden should be the new status symbol: a status symbol for a smart, competent, and independent homeowner.

    Huw this is exactly where we are at giving all the economic uncertainty out there, is to use a little space as possible to grow as much food as can be done, with as little effort as and inputs as we can get away with. Integrated, organized yet flexible, year-round production, maximum maintained fertility, large variety of crops, and of course grown organically based upon natural principles old and new. We are just pushing the edge as hard as we can to really come up with a consistent and repeatable system of production each year. There is much pioneer work to do and I am so excited for what's ahead and where things can go, and breaking new ground. Really love where you are going with this.

    I have a full-size allotment, with the aim to invest as little (money) as possible, and to see what I can grow. Rent is £95, an annual load of rotted horse manure another £80. I have not paid for wood chip or wood for beds. Even so I have spent another £100. So say excluding my time (and I already had tools) that’s £275 or £5.30 a week. So I need to get that back each week in food to cover my costs. Bearing in mind crops you don’t like and don’t eat is not food, so you need to grow things you enjoy which might be cheap in the supermarkets. I do though try to max out the value by focussing on crops that are expensive. So Cavalo Nero is surprisingly expensive in the shops. As is an allotment staple Rhubarb. I have used cuttings to create a good patch of blackcurrants, gooseberries and raspberries, which store well and are easy to grow. They again can be more expensive by weight than imported grapes. The final thing is you have to enjoy your garden. So it’s important to try new things, grow what brings you joy, and celebrate your successes. Self sufficient in vegetables but miserable and resentful of the time you spend on the plot is not the way to happiness.

    I've been making moves in my garden all autumn in order to fit in more raised beds. Have depleted my compost supply now so that will need budgeting for this year, although I may try to outsource compost material from some of my neighbours this year......
    Even decided to get rid of dedicated strawberry beds and have replanted them around the edge of the beds instead. My paths were wider than needed so I decided to free up more growing room.
    Mine are only pallet collar sized beds, I now have 16 to manage. I like it this way because I can see to them individually rather than a whole daunting project!
    I pleased to say, thanks to one of your newsletters, I'm also growing an orchard (I now have 5 fruit trees in the garden 😂)
    I'm beginning to use permaculture design ideas in other "rougher" parts of the garden. Becoming a little more creative; Rhubarb now lives in a flower bed creating some ornamental structure instead of taking up space in a veg bed for example.
    My dream is to have a beautiful garden, which is relatively easy for me to maintain around work etc, whilst producing as my food as I can.
    I look forward to the new book and garden, and will backtrack on past videos for now to formulate my plan for next year over the winter.
    Regards and seasons greetings from us, in Kent 👋

    How brilliant, as a half plot owner I look forward to reading the book. Just under a third of my plot is perennial planting, the rest is in 4 beds on a rotation. Only my second year but already produced hundreds of pounds £ of food. Paid for my shed in 2 seasons. Love it.

    Huw. You are now my go to UA-cam gardener. You have proved that with due care and diligence and a bit of space most people should be able to tick the food box as far as veg goes.
    Well done. I hope to be getting the book soon.

    1. You're an absolute gem for putting in all that work and working out the statistics. 2. Thank you so much for putting it all in a book for other people to use. 3. I am buying that book and I hope others do too.

    This is EXACTLY what I needed.
    The place we're moving to has a huge garden space available, over 1,500 square meters (I am totally stumped by where to put my potential raised beds; it's like a pea rolling around on a saucer) but it's a completely blank slate. No beds, no fence for cows and chickens, no compost, just one wobbly old translucent shed and a scattering of cow pies.
    If I can take a similar approach to what you have there, with slightly widened paths for accessibility, I might be able to survive the first year. 😁

    • @HuwRichards
      @HuwRichards  Рік тому +1

      Wow that is a great amount of space you have available! Making wider paths would be a very good choice there. You will be able to grow a huge amount of food though!
