Is the Tesla Model 3/Y White Interior Worth the Extra $1,000? | Thoughts After One Year of Ownership

- Опубліковано 3 жов 2024
- When it comes time to design and order your Tesla Model 3 or Model Y, you will have to choose between the standard black interior or optional white interior. Selecting the white interior will add an additional $1,000 to the total cost of the car and in today's video I will be reviewing why I feel this added expense was worth the money based on my first year of ownership.

I picked up my 2021 Tesla white on white last week, OBSESSED!!
Congrats! My white on white LR 2021 Model 3 is set to be picked up the 21st! CAN NOT WAIT!!!! LOL
I bet you look good in it

So nice!!!! Wish they had white on white for the model s plaid mode!

I like the white seats but I really like the "wood" trim of the black.
I selected back cause I like the wood trim too. Seems as we are the minority though!
@@palmbeachketoers6557 Did you regret it at all? I'm still on the fence.
@dinh No, I love the black. I test drove a blue Y with a white interior, and that sealed the deal. Black it is!!
Just ordered model 3 yesterday with white interior. Looks amazing
Black interior is the best can’t beat it . Some people like black on black like me , but I really think black interior is the best way to go .
I got my 2021 white on white December 12,2020 so it’s been only 3 days and I love it 🥰🥰🥰
I have kids that eats in the car. They aren’t careful about keeping their hands clean. I don’t have the time to frequently clean my car interior. That is why I chose the black. Also black interior looks more aggressive and sporty. If I was going for the luxury look, I would have chosen the white interior.
I heard it wipes off stains fairly easily. You shouldn’t be relying on a color to conceal the underlying cleanliness of the car interior anyways
black more sporty um not sure id say that but my hot take on it. and least it's probably not some weird outside and interior colour combo or weird patterns ect. as orange 🍊 or hot pink or turquoise blue with the outside in blue, red, green was used on dodge and greed um i though i got it bad with triple dark green mustered working on changing that to cardinal red/perlite white interior F8-outside/same as og
off colours for interiors can work and some body codes can be the same as the interior colour choices but as a combo its a be careful kinda thing
white interiors are better with UV/heat vs black and red or at least in my case is in the middle and bright red was in the usa 50's considered the sporty colour ( Chrysler's 50-60's 300 letter car's are good examples ) and black was for caddy's/Lincoln's and funerals whites was just for fun's/sporty/cruiser's
@@PoM-MoM i oped out after owning/driving a triple black jeep 2000's model no thanks never again way too hot even with middle of 🇺🇸/Kansas-middle and aircon ect. . only way id drive black like that again its it's super cheap and or a gifted or the only one on the rental lot. and im tried of hot but and that's cloth interior can't even imagine leather or vinyls
The white interior is worth it! Highly recommended!
I have white interior in my Model 3 over a year now and it is still clean & beautifully white, no stain at all. I heard that new blue jean might stain the blue color to the white seat so be careful with new blue jean
I don’t think it’s worth $1000 since you risk damages and staining. Instead I’d recommend just getting the black seats then getting the vegan leather seat covers which only cost $250. You can get them in many colors.
@@WaveManMike It's personal preference, and Tesla interiors use a unique patented vegan leather that resists most common staining and spilling.
thanks for sharing
I have a 2020 SR+ with the black interior. Trading in for the 2021 LR with white interior. I feel the white screams "Unique" and thats what Im aiming for with my new Tesla. I pick her up on the 21st! SWEET!!!!
How much did you add if you don’t mind to tell, I like the 2021 update too
Never thought about the white seats not getting as hot. And I do agree it looks way more futuristic in white.
Yes, it is worth the extra $1,000.
When we ordered our Model 3 last November, I decided I wanted to performance version and since we were splurging my wife one of the white interior so we ordered both. After having the car for a year we absolutely love it and are so happy we ordered the white interior. We chose white paint and with the white interior car is just gorgeous. Living in California and having an all glass car you can’t survive the summer without tinted windows; but the car looks so good with the white interior I chose a clear IR blocking tint and I’m glad I did. Also living in California white seats are so much cooler in the summer (even if the car is in camp mode). Also they are very stain resistant and very easy to clean.
I’m a fan of the white paint and white interior! Definitely Tesla’s highest quality paint and in my opinion their highest quality interior.
Thank you for your input. I ve struggling several days to chose one. It gets really hot where I live in California in the Summer so I think I ll do the same thing you did. My only hesitation is I have a little black pug that sheds like crazy. My solution is to bubble wrap him when he gets in my white interior Y.
@@tam8479 I’ve had the car for 2 years now and the white interior is still gorgeous.
Gifted Tesla model x to my sis she loved it even after 7 months seats still look brand new. Thanks Tesla
Great summary - I've got a 2017 Model S with a white interior and I don't regret it at all. The one area where the 3/Y are different is in the S/X the center arm rest is also white - this isn't a good thing. Your skin oils will naturally accumulate there and it gets grimy looking pretty quickly. It's easy to clean but a black arm rest isn't going to look so bad so quickly.
Great point! I didn’t realize the S/X had the white armrest.
White interior ftw!
having had the X for 2 years now, mostly driven by my bf (who is a frequent jean wearer lol) I have to say our white interior still looks brand new imo. like you, I do spritz it down every week to "maintain" them. overall tho I have been really pleased with it. that being said when I purchased the Y (for myself) I did go with the black trim, ig for a difference in style. either way, I find the interior care and overall quality of the Teslas quite good.
*edit* we also have 3 dogs, 2 small and 1 a large breed. we purchased one of those dog "blanket" things for the Y and seems to be well worth a look seeing as that is one solid seat. in our X though (with the white interior) we haven't put any protective cloth and the seats as I said before still look great imo :)
This was so helpful I wasn’t sure if I should order it but it really makes a difference in terms of how it looks inside so worth it
Yes it definitely changes the whole atmosphere of the interior!
Yes!!!! I changed my seats to white. Should be here in a few weeks
Im gonna get a Black exterior and a white interior. soon.
Also Long Range.
Im Excited for it.
How is it so far? I just ordered the same colors and upgrade.
Considering that the temps go as high as 45C in the summer where I live, black seats are 100% no good for my use case, and only lightly-colored seats would work.
I live in Phoenix and it’s 113 today which I think is roughly 45C, I have black interior and its not an issue at all. However I think the white looks nice and clean. So torn on which color to go with in the new Model 3 I am ordering this week.
I had to scroll to the end of the comments to find some in disagreement lol. I’m half and half to be honest. The white is so bright, I prefer the cream interior available in the model S. But in the end black is very common and I want something different so I’ve gone for white. It does make the interior seem more spacious, you’re right.
Black is very common? lmao yeah not when if comes to Tesla white is very common in Tesla’s😂
@@R3cklessExo White is available as an option in Teslas so naturally it is common 🤣. I was referring to regular cars though. I’ve had black seats all my life, now I have white seats. Once you go white you never go back. Er, wait…
Fellow “yinzer” and front line medical worker here as well! Thanks for making a video on this topic! I’ve been wrestling with which interior to order. White on white with the 19” rims looks awesome! Would love the performance M3 but commuting 82 miles round trip 5 days a week isn’t really conducive to the performance model (and potential replacement tire cost). Keep up the great work! Will be sure to give ya a sub!
Happy to help! I think the long range is the way to go. You can always buy the acceleration boost later on if you aren’t happy with the cars stock performance (which is still very good with a 4.2 0 to 60).
what is a front line medical worker?
@@ollagal1 Frontline health workers are comprised of all types of health workers-including nurses, midwives, community health workers, doctors, pharmacists, and more-who provide care directly to their communities
YES YES YES... Love my Model Y white on white... wooo hooooo
Pulled the trigger and ordered my M3SR+ in white because of this video. Thanks!
Great to hear! I think you’ll really enjoy it!
Nice job showing off the interior. Waiting for my MY, 4 more weeks!
When I place my order later this summer it’s definitely white!
My seller at the Tesla store said that the white seats are much better quality than the black, due to it must handle being cleaned a lot.
That’s what I have heard as well!
Beyond that, you will shave 3-6 months off your delivery window if you go with a black/white interior which, IMO, is a very classy look and will be cooler in the hot Nevada sun...
Got my 2022 Model 3 on Dec 13th. After three days i took a magic eraser sheet and wiped down the drivers seat. It was all blue and black from my jeans. Decided to add a ceramic coating to the seats. we shall see how it does over time. ty
I’d get it because it should heat up from the sun less down here in Florida.
I took delivery of my red on white M3LR 4 days ago and I don't regret my white seats at all. If I had gotten black interior I would have been disappointed.
Your video was around 8 months ago. Any change in your thoughts about the white interior? Your vehicle is now close to 2 years old, are they still holding up well?
Yes still holding up well! I plan on doing an update video closer to the two year mark. No visual wear and tear or staining. I’m genuinely impressed with how good they still look.
Great review!
Thank you!
How do you get the Jean stains out of white seats?
ok. I made my decision. I will buy model 3 long range with white on white. I was struggling earlier with different color combination like might night silver with black interior, blue with black interior.
I’m definitely biased but I prefer the white on white!
@@KilowattAuto yes. it looks awesome. Thanks for the great video you produced. Very informative, awesome job!!!
Thank you! Good to hear it was helpful!
The white interior certainly does get stained.. I attest you’re non stained and non torn up seats to your scrubs. There is no careful way to enter or leave a car unless you enter and exit like meth gorilla. The best thing to do is to buy a seat cover for the bottom half of the drivers seat. You do not need one for the passenger unless you ride with one 2/3rds of time you’re driving. I love the look of the white interior and it truly doesn’t get as hot in the sun as black but once you get the stain it’s very very hard to remove.
I think it’s definitely worth it for the Model X and Y but somehow don’t see it being a good value add for S and 3. Sportier cars look nice with black interior imo
If you are a clean freak then no!!! I Just got my brand new model y yesterday and believe me every time I see even a smallest stain it freaks me out! It looks beautiful but I don’t know how I will manage with two small kids 😳
Hey the white looks great.
mine has premium interior and all heated seats even heated steering wheel on my 21 sr+ m3 gray w/white interior
Only if Tesla can make a white steering wheel (like VW id.4), that will be perfect.
That would be cool!
You can get a white steering wheel replacement but it costs like 2k
Interior is bad ass

I'm thinking of getting the start covers but only putting on the base covers.
I’ve watched tons of these Tesla white seats videos and no one addresses the big elephant in the room and that’s the fact that these seats are part cloth in some areas where your hands are pretty frequently or areas where pants rub, such as in front of the two front seats near the base; on the inner sides of the two front seats where they meet/touch the center console and in the rear seatbelt wells where hands are constantly grabbing and connecting the seatbelt connectors. Do the black seats have cloth as well? I was hugely disappointed and felt lied to by Tesla. They are “partly” premium vegan leather - not fully.
Only had mine for a couple months and my driver seat definitely has some bad spots. I wear black pants to work, my wife wears jeans, although does not drive it often.
I have tried The recommended soap and warm water, I made sure to wipe the seats down with water wipes every week or whenever something has gotten onto them. I've tried an interior vinyl/leather cleaner that was highly recommended. I don't even have 3k miles yet and the driver seat has some wear. Blue almost like shading on the left bottom part of the seat, some small parts where my back hits have some dark spots that are not on the passenger side and were not there before.
I have scrubbed with the soap and interior cleaner with warm/hot water, let stuff sit for multiple minutes at a time and did that multiple times. Still will not come out. I guess I was just very unlucky with my seats.
I still love the white interior too much to not recommend it though. The spots are hard to see from the outside, so that's good news.
That does sound pretty unlucky. It seems like you’ve tried nearly everything to clean them. I wonder if a Mr. Clean eraser would do the trick.
@@KilowattAuto oh yes. I knew there was something else I wanted to try! Totally forgot haha. Thank you. Seriously ha
No problem! Let me know if it works.
@@ThatWasRage did it work? Wanna get the white seats as well!
@@rickdbz I wouldn’t recommend white... my friend got the white interior and cleans his seats weekly. If you don’t mind the upkeep then do it. As for myself I decided to do black because of a lot of stain issues I’ve seen and heard of :/
Is the white interior ever too bright - for example, on a sunny day when sunlight is bouncing off the passenger seat or dash? Any insight on this would be super helpful.
The only issues I have seen are in cars that have tinted front windows. The white dash reflects pretty harshly in the window right over the side view mirrors. In my case I do not have any tint so I have had no issues. The car interior definitely feels bright on sunny days but the seats don’t reflect any light nor do they make bright sunlight harsh on the eyes. I think the white interior does feel a bit more spacious because of how the white seats interact with light compared with the black interior.
@@KilowattAuto Thanks, that's interesting, appreciate the reply!
Happy to help!
It look great! I almost got it myself, but the seller at Tesla actually advised against it. He stated that it would age worse than black. I found it a little strange coming from the seller, since it cost 1000 dolsts more. I dont know if his statement are true. Either way, wouldnt worry to much about it :)
Yeah I think it depends on your situation! I’m coming up on two years and it still looks factory fresh. If you have kids or animals I would be more concerned about aging.
My white seats are great, but sometimes the bright white dash becomes a strong glare in my sideview mirror. I kind of wish I could get white seats with a matte black dash.
I hear you on that. I know there are some aftermarket wraps as well as entire replacement dash boards if the glare becomes too bothersome

Is the white interior option $1,000 extra only on the Model 3 and Y and not the Model X and S?
In the Model S and X it’s actually more expensive at $1500.
So 10000$ FSD package can be added later. Not necessary to buy it with car, right?
@@Kumar-nx5ly yes it seems that is how it'll work
The white does look good- but you're missing the wood trim in front!
Is it real wood?
Maybe not- still looks good though, in my opinion
Pretty sure you can add a vinyl wrap to that piece of you wanted the wood grain look. They may even have a snap on piece. Essentially that’s what you get anyways from Tesla. From what I recall it isn’t an actual wood piece.
@@brasha78 oh yeah I guess that’s true
Yes, when I ordered my model Y with the white interior, I was upset the front wood trim was not offered as I think that would look better. Maybe I'll look into the vinyl wrap option if it keeps bugging me.
Im curious how much the temperature difference between white seats and black seats when left in 90-100 degree asphalt lot all morning. I am more evening shift worker. Have to come out to a hot car.
Black interior is way better
I wish more of the interior was white
Down the road there might be some changes. I know the Chinese white interior is getting some additional white door accents.
I liked your Tesla.
Why does it cost $1000 more to have a white instead of a black interior? Synthetic seat cover materials areall manufactured on the same equipment irrespective of thge colour, the material constituents are the same, it is only the pigments that go into the mix that are different.
But the auto manufsacturers used to charge a premium for Ivory coloured leather (and maybe still do) inspite of the cost being the same as any other colour.
Perhaps there is more warranty with white seats and Tesla cater for that in the higher price.
I say no. Buy white seat covers that look just like original for 200 and save 800. That way youre not as worried if u mess them up
Who buys a $60K-$70K luxury car to put seat covers in them?
Wait so people was lying? The white seats are not softer I need help trying to pick out my seats 😭
I absolutely love the white interior and I think I will order my M3 with one. Since I have a young child I want to coat the seats. I have a question regarding this. This is not real leather, but most of the protection coats I have seen are for leather. Would they work too, or could this damage the material? Do i need to find a coating specifically for artificial leather? Thanks!
If you want a protective layer you can get a ceramic coating that can be applied to the seats. I probably would not use a leather protector. To be honest I’ve had them for almost three years now and have had no issues with staining. They come from the factory with a good protective coating and as long as you are diligent about wiping them down with water every few weeks you shouldn’t have any issues.
How do they hold up with kids?
I will pick up mine next week
How will it be in 5 years+
I look at them this way..
The white looks like you actually own the car the black are for the reps, lease and hire..
I wouldn't buy white for a robo taxi put it that way..
Thanks for the information. Do you think i need to purchase the roof sunshade for summer?
No I don’t think that is necessary. I turn on my AC before I get to my car (maybe 5 minutes before) via the app. The cabin is always nice and cool once I get there.
How ofter do u clean the seats bro ? Like does dust comes in quicker than black seats ? Cuz black seats usually gets dirty pretty quick too
I clean them maybe once per month. I think the black seats hide dirt much better but both colors are made from the same vegan leather so I don’t think one would be more or less attractive for dirt and dust. If anything the white seats may be a bit more dirt resistant since they do come with a hydrophobic barrier applied to them. I am not sure if this is the case with the black interior.

Do you think an all black y would look weird with a white interior?
No the black exterior look really nice with the white interior! Good contrast.
Any have what looks like stretch marks on side portions of seating area?
It’s hard to say. The camera picks them up more than how they actually look. The side boosters are smooth and don’t have visible stretch marks under most lighting conditions.
Does the premium sound package include a subwoofer?
Yes it does include a subwoofer.
Is the headliner the same color for either the black and the white interior?
It looks greyish?
Yes it’s a light gray in both the white and black interior.
Any visibility problems because of that white strip reflecting in the front or side windows?
No issues! If you tint the windows I have heard the glare can be bad and seeing the mirrors is difficult.
Is the white portion of the dashboard metal material or leather?
It’s a metal material.
I’ve heard the white interior material is softer compared to the black I haven’t had a chance to check this can anyone confirm?
As far as I am aware both are the same vegan leather material. My test drive was in a black interior and I did not notice a difference in comfort between that and my white seats.
Did you use any special paint protection on your car?
All I have used is Hydrosilex recharge ceramic coating. I made a video on my cleaning/car care process: ua-cam.com/video/qzJky7MxZwo/v-deo.html

Was the Standard Range Plus upgraded recently to Premium interior as default? I can't find it mentioned anymore
No there is still a difference between standard range plus and long range interiors. If you switch between those two options and then scroll down to interior (black or white selection), under feature details you will see that they are different.
@@KilowattAuto Thanks, good catch. Differences are minimal luckily, like better sound and heated back seats and steering wheel, which are used
Yes! I’m pretty sure you can also “unlock” the heated rear seats via an in app purchase if you decide you want to use them down the road.
I trust that the white interior will hold up for a while, but my only concern is that I plan on keeping my tesla for close to 10 years (maybe a little less).
Obviously I expect some damage after using it for years and years, but am worried that it would last as long as the black interior.
I think the durability should be the same between both interiors. The black is just going to hide dirt and damage much better than the white will. The seat materials as far as I know are the same between black verse white and I am not sure if both come with a special hydrophobic barrier from the factory (I know the white one does). You can also buy interior ceramic coating solution and coat the seats/surfaces for added protection regardless of whether you get black or white.
I am curious: What vehicle did you owned and/or you drove regularly before, specifically speaking before the age of EVs? #askingforafriend :)
Prior to this I was driving a Jeep Cherokee.
Did you have glare issues with all of the white? If so, can you describe the places being visually obstructed that show reflection when driving? Thank you.
No glare issues whatsoever, i have heard it can be bad if you get your windows tinted. The white dash shows up in the glass and makes it hard to see your mirrors.
@@KilowattAuto Ah gotcha, if the owner lives in a sunny environment and gets tint, he may be in trouble. otherwise, it's fine.
Yup! Depends on the tint intensity too.
Would you get white seats with kids? I’m currently looking to get the 7 seater Y
Yes I would! I haven’t had any difficulty cleaning stains or marks. But I think it just depends on how much work you want to put into maintaining the interior. The black will hide wear and tear better but the white makes the cabin seem much more futuristic and bigger.
I have a white interior and have a dog. My children are in there infrequently. Easy to clean but it show all mud and dirt. A black interior will be as dirty but won't show as much.
I wonder why tesla could not offer a decent color instead of toilet white, this is just way too white imo. For no reason, the dash also looks very gross and it reflects in side mirrors pretty badly due to its color. I love my wooden dash tho, and in 2018 there was no white but even if it was, that toilet white dash color would be a deal braker for me. They could have easily do any color in the world, and they chose this kind of white, why god why! Beige would look great, creme, or any off white shade. Definitely would look awesome in dark muted red and brown. But nope, we get boring black and toilet white. Elon's jokes...
So if you're a compulsive cleaner then yes.
I’m trying to see what the cost is to change my seats out for white color from the service center lol
