@davebcf1231 Well, I know the screams vocals came out of Hardcore, and some of those bands have more of the hard-core roots than others, but there's a real discussion for Killswitch to be the most influential in modern day metalcore
@@HeroInTragedy It's just fact that metalcore started in the late 80's. KSE is part of the second wave of metalcore. One of the biggest bands of 2nd wave metalcore is Parkway Drive and they had no cleans on any of their early albums. It's not a diss to KSE just to state the fact that the genre had a whole first wave that was popular (within the metal scene) before they were even a band. "but there's a real discussion for Killswitch to be the most influential in modern day metalcore" There are a lot of other bands that came out right around that same time that were hugely influential as well. August Burns Red, All That Remains, As I Lay Dying, Parkway Drive, Unearth, Trivium, etc...
Thanks for sharing the love with this authentic reaction. I was lucky enough to attend this very show in Worcester, MA in 2006. Pre-smartphones, witnessing a band having a moment and performing at their absolute peak - all in front of a crowd that could not have been more amped. To this day, this ranks as one of the best metal shows I've ever attended. A night of pure joy. It makes me kind of sad that it's unlikely to ever go down like this again. Thank you for noticing and commenting on the incredible energy in the room. I always feel the nostalgia so hard when I hear Killswitch. I have such vivid memories of grabbing this CD - with it's gray skull logo and red lettering - from the case clipped behind my '96 Maxima's sun visor and popping it into my Panasonic CD player...purchased from Tweeter and installed on the cheap by a friend's cool older brother, of course. Good days and bad days, this album had some serious anthems.
Howard Jones is THE FUCKING MAN. Words can't describe how good Killswitch was when he was in the band. Got the pleasure to see them twice with him and it was incredible.
Another band that has a huge catalog in 12+ albums including "Truth Killer" coming out later this year; Sevendust. Lajon Witherspoon and Morgan Rose are epic
Howard has an amazing vocal range. He ended up leaving the band and the original vocalist came back(who also is great) . I think he had a medical issue where he couldn’t tour. Ended up making a new band called Light the Torch and they’re also amazing
@6:55 They're from Massachusetts, however the horn symbol is universally adopted by the metal/rock/punk/alternative communities and was first used by Ronnie James Dio (AKA Dio, Rest in Peace) as it was something his grandmother used to do to ward away evil spirits. KSE have also covered a Dio song, Holy Diver which is amazing!
You should check out the lyrics to the 2nd song for sure. I think you would appreciate it. It's called "Take this Oath" Killswitch is actually very spiritual. My parents tried to stop me from listening to this stuff back in the day too but now I send my mom these lyrics and she is shocked lol
It is another song yeah, they freakin rules. In the metal-core scene they are a inspiration for the new bands comin up and growing with this band and bunch of other. The singer you see replaced another guy for couple of years. Than the original singer came back and they even duo on one of their last album. This is a pretty emotional music to listen to. It gives me chills every time!
I think it’s safe to say, BP has a new band to rock out to at the gym! lmao KSE are from my neck of the world. I’m from central Massachusetts and they are from Springfield, MA. this video was filmed at the Worcester Palladium, which is an AWESOME venue here!! I’ve seen countless shows there. but this one specifically, a handful of my friends were in attendance that night.
I just stumbled across this probably cause I love metal and I listen to killswitch and have for all these years. The crowd is like that cause they are in their home town! This was on the set the world ablaze dvd they filmed. These guys are not only musicians. But they’re funny down to earth humans too. And Howard left and it’s Jesse their original singer now but I think their from Massachusetts or somewhere. But man such a good song choice and Howard is an absolute beast on vocals.
It's awesome to see someone who grew up listening to R&B show an appreciation for rock. You rocking out to the first song was awesome!!! I'm around your age and I grew up listening to rock and I'm just starting to have an appreciation for rap. Good to see!
LOL, you're listening to some of the most uplifting metal music. Howard has the most fantastic lyrics in the metal game. He did a short cover of Simple Man you can see on UA-cam...his emotional tone and vocal range are just so good. Also, this concert you're watching is almost 20 years old!
Welcome to metal, for a good portion of bands. The audience comes in knowing the music and the lyrics and most of us just want to celebrate our love of the music together with the musicians. There are bad eggs in every genre, but every metal / hard rock show I have been to have been really positive and therapeutic for the me, and most of the audience.
Thanks for covering multiple songs in that video. There are tons of different "metal" descriptions for KSE's style. My favorite description of the band is they play "life metal". A lot of the songs express sorrow and emotions, but many of the songs talk about accepting/facing problems, persevering and overcoming hardships, not being crushed by hardships and problems.
Awesome reaction! As a western mass native, it’s great to see some local guys getting reaction love on UA-cam! Is the fin still open??? Next reaction Shadows Fall or All That Remains??? Please forgive this other 40 year-old guy reliving his glory days…
Exact time is too weird to call out cause it's live, but during the breakdown when you leaned way back in your chair started double fist pumping... Yes. That is how you listen to Killswitch.
Got to see Light The Torch (Howard’s current band), August Burns Red, and Killswitch…Howard came out at the end of KE’s set and sang the last three songs. Jesse sang with him on the last song. It was so insane. The man has zero quit in him.
This particular show is a "home show" in Worcester, Massachusetts. They're from the Springfield, MA area. Killswitch crowds are always great but the "home shows" are always a bit more crazy.
Let’s GOoooo!!! I am so excited for this one! I saw them live 15 years ago and only Five Finger Deathpunch has knocked them down from my top five concerts- between the people I went with/ the performances- the crowds and people that met were epic!
To add more- Howard Jones is epic and I am hoping that the video is will h Howard not Jesse- Jesse was first - got ill and Howard stepped in, and then Jesse came back- they did stuff with both a few times but there are no hard feelings- Howard came out with a you tube guitarist who is AMAZING Sion- Blade official video When Howard screams and then belts it out- you don’t realize he is 50! The whole album is amazing
@@kraZkins007 His advanced age is part of why I took up screaming after carpal tunnel took the guitar out of my hands. I can put in another 25 years of this at least.
Added bit of context here: this is at the Worcester Palladium in Massachusetts, about an hour away from where the band initially formed in Westfield Mass. Basically a home show for these guys, even a full decade later it's still talked about fondly
You want some absolutely amazing growling? Check out Slaughter to Prevail! Lead singer is Alex Terrible. Secondly Howard is a top 3 metal lead singer! Classically trained, and a certified badass!
@Black Pegasus I know I am a bit late to the game, but I just found your reaction channel. Killswitch Engage (KSE) = Metalcore Slipknot = Nu Metal Ronny James Dio's grandmother who was from the island of Sicily used her pointer and pinky fingers pointed straight forward to ward away evil spirits and Ronny started doing it at concerts and it later became to be known as the Devil horns even though that was way out of context. Now it's just seems to be a greeting of anything metal music related. KSE lyrics are meant to be empowering and to be anything but negative. They aren't afraid to speak on all topics to include death, suicide, relationship hardships, breakups, and how to feel happy. I've been listening to the band since their conception in the early 2000's. They are from Massachusetts also. Also learning to hear low, mid, and high growls is really a familiarity thing. Plus some singers are more clear than others tbh. I would think it would be the same for listening to different rappers who have different styles to the way they bend their voice. Anyways, I hope this is helpful and have a great day. P.S. That was Three songs actually.(The End of Heartache, Take this Oath, and not sure on the last one) Also, The End of Heartache was nominated for a Grammy and lost only to Metallica. They also performed that song at the Grammys.
I was there the night they recorded this for the dvd. Howard was a great friend to me back in the 90’s and 00’s. I was feeling so proud of him that night.
OKAYYY a few things BP! 1. Welcome to Metalcore, it is a subgenre of heavy metal 2. The 'Texas longhorns' symbol is commonly and colloquially referred to as 'The Horns' (i.e "Get those horns in the air) which today really means 'rock on' or 'hell ya' etc. but it started off in heavy metal 3. You listened to 3 songs! A: The End of Heartache B: Take This Oath, a personal favorite of mine C. Numbered Days At 11:54 you mentioned your moms trying to keep you from this genre of music cause of it being the devils music etc, and then you went on to explain you've found it to have more deeper meanings and you are 100% correct. Through the harsh vocals (the technique is called vocal frys or screams or growls by the way) aggressive tones, and intense drumming Rock/Heavy Metal has its roots in blues and Jazz. Alot of tuning, Drop C/D got its start in those genres and it morphed over time. Unless you really really dive into metal you're not gonna find the dreaded 'pray to satan our lord' stuff that most people automatically associate with metal (And I mean you reallllly have to dive deep down to find it) Thats all I can think of for now. I would 100% recommend pulling up the lyrics, especially on your first listen. If you're new to metal its nearly impossible to pick up on the double entendres, expressions etc. Great reaction as always BP, much love from the west coast.
7:50 my dude feeling what every metal head feels at one point or another. One of us! One of us! When someone says they don't understand metal... that feeling right there.
It's funny you mentioned performing with the crowd. I was at a show where they opened for Lamb of God and Adam (the guy with the cape) literally ran through and played guitar from the audience.

Just as the✌ 'V' for victory, evolved to my generations ✌ peace sign. The " Hook 'em horns"🤘, evolved to a symbol 🤘 for 'metal'! Symbols take on many meanings over time and usage. Just as the swastika was an ancient symbol for infinity, till it was co-opted by the Nazi's! Metal music may have the most sub-genres of all, this is considered 'metal-core'. Peace & Love from an old music loving hippie.🤘&✌.

One of the biggest bands of 2nd wave metalcore is Parkway Drive and they had no cleans on any of their early albums. It's not a diss to KSE just to state the fact that the genre had a whole first wave that was popular (within the metal scene) before they were even a band.
"but there's a real discussion for Killswitch to be the most influential in modern day metalcore"
There are a lot of other bands that came out right around that same time that were hugely influential as well. August Burns Red, All That Remains, As I Lay Dying, Parkway Drive, Unearth, Trivium, etc...
I would call them pioneers of the bent pinched harmonic as well, I don't think I heard anyone lean on it as heavily before KSE.
Nah man. They are definitely on the Metalcore Mt. Rushmore but they didn't popularize it. They did lead the charge of the 00's Metalcore era though.
Sevendust is legit badass!!!
Sevendust - Black is still one of my all time favorite songs
I concur
I would definitely agree
Love Lajon!
Howard has an amazing vocal range. He ended up leaving the band and the original vocalist came back(who also is great) . I think he had a medical issue where he couldn’t tour. Ended up making a new band called Light the Torch and they’re also amazing
"Is that how rock songs are long nowadays?" maybe 18 years ago... as the set the world ablaze show was performend in 2005 if I recall it correctly...
You just watched a set. My childhood is happy right now.
I liked it better than the original, but I'm not fond of obviously old recording audio quality.
@@MidnighTokr yeah I’m more a fan of the cover but same as you I think it’s due to the quality of the recording of the original
9:50 Just smiles
You should check out the lyrics to the 2nd song for sure. I think you would appreciate it. It's called "Take this Oath" Killswitch is actually very spiritual. My parents tried to stop me from listening to this stuff back in the day too but now I send my mom these lyrics and she is shocked lol
Had a similar experience, had my mom read some of the lyrics in the cd insert.
I love that you reacted to the hole thing, no only the first song, this video is amazing!
I WOULD OF NEVER DREAMED OF THIS VIDEO. THANK YOU BP. YOU REALLY THE GOAT. Killswitch fucking rock
This was one of my first concerts ever. One of the best live shows I've seen
Seeing you start to rock out to the breakdown at 7:47 forward was fucking AWESOME
I think it’s safe to say, BP has a new band to rock out to at the gym! lmao
KSE are from my neck of the world. I’m from central Massachusetts and they are from Springfield, MA. this video was filmed at the Worcester Palladium, which is an AWESOME venue here!! I’ve seen countless shows there. but this one specifically, a handful of my friends were in attendance that night.
One of my favorite bands of all time
when i see Howard or hear Howard voice's automatically bow head down and hat off and started the headbang.
Howard awesome and legend.
They went nuts. Pure and simple.
My dads favorite band back when I was in 3rd thru 4th grade😌
Signal Fire is another great song by these guys and it features both singers!
Howard Jones = metalcore frontman GOAT!!! 🤘😎🤘
Exact time is too weird to call out cause it's live, but during the breakdown when you leaned way back in your chair started double fist pumping... Yes. That is how you listen to Killswitch.
You did 4 songs . I love it. Glad you didn't realize
Awesome reaction video
Seen these guys at ozzfest in 2005. Such a badass and funny bad. Very fun. I bid farewell from this show is also badass
This live DVD is one of my favourites. Always loved this band ever since I first heard them and their lyrics are amazing and uplifting.
He literally moshpitting there on the chair😂😂😂😂😂 love it!!!
Ahh the nostalgia lol this was my shit through middle/high school..great fuckin band 🤘
To add more- Howard Jones is epic and I am hoping that the video is will h Howard not Jesse- Jesse was first - got ill and Howard stepped in, and then Jesse came back- they did stuff with both a few times but there are no hard feelings-
Howard came out with a you tube guitarist who is AMAZING
Sion- Blade official video
When Howard screams and then belts it out- you don’t realize he is 50! The whole album is amazing
@@kraZkins007 His advanced age is part of why I took up screaming after carpal tunnel took the guitar out of my hands. I can put in another 25 years of this at least.
Bro, this has to be the best reaction video I’ve ever seen lol. You killed it man.
Thems just devil horns my man 🤘 thank you ronnie james dio RIP
So happy someone reacted to this!!! Hell yeah!! 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
Yay! So glad you did this one. Howard Jones is great.
I wish it was 2006 again and I was in the middle of that pit. Great memories
Added bit of context here: this is at the Worcester Palladium in Massachusetts, about an hour away from where the band initially formed in Westfield Mass. Basically a home show for these guys, even a full decade later it's still talked about fondly
My first concert killswitch engaged and Disturbed is and still the most fun I had at a concert
You want some absolutely amazing growling? Check out Slaughter to Prevail! Lead singer is Alex Terrible.
Secondly Howard is a top 3 metal lead singer! Classically trained, and a certified badass!
This is so awesome....daw you taking your cap of the first time....great reaction 🤘🏽🔥
Saw killswitch live in a smaller venue around this era. One of the best live shows ever. BP should check out All That Remains too
Saw them around the same era with All That Remains, small venue in central Cali. Badass show.
F*ck yea man, I grew up with these guys. Love your reaction to this!
So sick seeing you rocking out to some classic metalcore! 🤘
wow not heard this one in a minute , glad you are checking them out and venturing into more rock and metal music
@18:24 This genre is more classed as Metalcore, which is the crossover gap between Metal and Hardcore, whereas Slipknot are considered as just Metal
@Black Pegasus I know I am a bit late to the game, but I just found your reaction channel.
Killswitch Engage (KSE) = Metalcore
Slipknot = Nu Metal
Ronny James Dio's grandmother who was from the island of Sicily used her pointer and pinky fingers pointed straight forward to ward away evil spirits and Ronny started doing it at concerts and it later became to be known as the Devil horns even though that was way out of context.
Damn that's nostalgic. Used to watch this DVD all the time. I think The Element of One from this set is one their best performances ever.
I was there the night they recorded this for the dvd. Howard was a great friend to me back in the 90’s and 00’s. I was feeling so proud of him that night.
OKAYYY a few things BP!
1. Welcome to Metalcore, it is a subgenre of heavy metal
2. The 'Texas longhorns' symbol is commonly and colloquially referred to as 'The Horns' (i.e "Get those horns in the air) which today really means 'rock on' or 'hell ya' etc. but it started off in heavy metal
3. You listened to 3 songs!
A: The End of Heartache
B: Take This Oath, a personal favorite of mine
C. Numbered Days
At 11:54 you mentioned your moms trying to keep you from this genre of music cause of it being the devils music etc, and then you went on to explain you've found it to have more deeper meanings and you are 100% correct.
The breakdowns are my absolute favorite part of metal music. Makes sense honestly since I only used to listen to dubstep back in high school😂
Nice to see you diving into different music i miss howard jones from killswitch engage
Your energy at the end, fucking awesome bro
7:50 my dude feeling what every metal head feels at one point or another. One of us! One of us! When someone says they don't understand metal... that feeling right there.
Lead singer Howard jones is from Columbus, Ohio
It's funny you mentioned performing with the crowd. I was at a show where they opened for Lamb of God and Adam (the guy with the cape) literally ran through and played guitar from the audience.
This track blew me away when I heard it the first time, his voice demands your attention😊 thanx❤...I think you may enjoy sleep token.. jaws specifically 😊thanx again.
Your reaction to the breakdown was SPOT ON! I absolutely love it
I was at this show, great live performance, always high energy. 🤘
Awesome reaction mate, taking me back to my teen years there for sure
need to hear last serenade
Just as the✌ 'V' for victory, evolved to my generations ✌ peace sign. The " Hook 'em horns"🤘, evolved to a symbol 🤘 for 'metal'! Symbols take on many meanings over time and usage. Just as the swastika was an ancient symbol for infinity, till it was co-opted by the Nazi's! Metal music may have the most sub-genres of all, this is considered 'metal-core'. Peace & Love from an old music loving hippie.🤘&✌.
Awesome my favorite band when it had Howard. I think this gets a sub from me
bangers on bangers
Sick track! Takes me back many years haha enjoy the song🤙🏻
The breakdown… you’re reaction bro…. EPIC!!! I absolutely LOVE when people watch this video that have never heard of KsE. TAKE THIS OATH… the song right after is one of my favorites. That verse riff is HARD AS F!$k!!!
And nothing makes me happier again to see the bop. The head bop is how you know an individuals actually into the moment. Truly feeling the sound.
a band knows its connects when the fans when they sing the song for you
Howard Jones. One of the greatest metal vocalist ever. And Killswitch is amazing bro. Keep checking them out
I hope he checks more of their music. I’m back a year later watching this again haha.
Aha yes 🤟🖤. I really enjoyed this reaction. U definitly got hype for a moment there 😂😂.. Love that feeling.. I myself was giving major stank faces on those heavy riffs melodies n growls.. This also gave me major nostalgia vibes thanks for a fun react BP ✌️🖤
This was a great period to be a metal head. Even our unknown artists of this era were great. This was in fact this was the final stretch for most good music. Post this era we got mumble and drill 🤦🏾♂
learning to scream is a legit skill! Hard af to master too - most people sound like cats fighting for the first year or so hahaha
Oh my god once you get out of that phase though and really start rounding out your range... damn is it fun.
You're still going to want the cat like vocal fry for the high-pitched screams though. Black Dahlia Murder or Suicide Silence are a pretty good example.
@@MidnighTokr oh for sure. It's super cathartic
@@qpTheDarknessqp haha yes. There is a time and place for both for sure
BP, slowly but surely, becoming a metalhead.
When their first singer came back, and then they did a collab with the other, then toured together with both bands... Holy fuck was that amazing!!!
Metal shows are the best to see live precisely because the energy is always so high in the pit!
