- Produced between 1994 and 2004, the #GTV and #Spider “916” are perhaps the most collectible #AlfaRomeo models of the modern era.
And it’s easy to see why: their design looks every bit as fresh and attractive now as it did a quarter of a century ago.
Add to the mix the lusty “Busso” V6 engines or the characterful Twin Spark 16 valve four cylinders, and the cachet of being the last Alfa models ever manufactured at the historic Arese site, and it’s no surprise that prices for good survivors are firming up.
I've made this video in collaboration with Sfera Channel, which provided the stunning footage of the yellow "phase 2" Spider and rare "phase 3" GTV.

These cars still look unique and modern. The design was ahead of its time. I think they had a concept called Proteo as well.
Yup. The Proteo was made by the Alfa Romeo centro stile under Walter De' Silva, and it was based on a chopped 164 platform. So the two projects have been roughly contemporary, but the cars aren't actually related.
@@Matteo_Licata That Proteo concept was massively overengineered for that time. Not only it had implemented 164 Q4 all wheel drive system but also it had four wheel steering. But at least that paint colour went into production on later 164 models as "Proteo rosso".
It's an absolute joy to own and drive. My 1998 Phase 1 916 TS Spider Lusso. Grigio Chiaro (a beauiful silver) in colour and only 45,000 kms. Bought it 4 years ago for a bargain $11,000 now worth twice that and climbing. A 1 owner car with original everything including paint. Total love affair drive, and my 7th Alfa Romeo.

I bought a 1996 Phase 1 Twin Spark 2.0 GTV (Rosso Red) in January 2008. Been in storage since 2013, but I am now restoring it. Brilliant cars.
And this is why I have alfa romeo spider 916 phase2 in nero with the underrated TS 2.0 engine. Great video!

I remember when these were new. There was a billboard I passed on the way to work which made me drool. Later the V6 GTV was released and it looked so good it hurt. The 916 had flaws but they are so lovely as are most Alfas. This channel makes me smile... Alot! 😎

Funny enough, I lived in walking distance of Alfa’s historic Arese plant while owning a green 916 Gtv 2.0 TS in the early 2000s, my absolute dream car at the time. 😍 Not exactly a 🚀 with a laughable trunk, but we loved it and put a lot of kms on it. Thx for the memories.

@@Matteo_Licata Black 2.0 Twinspark Spider with saddle-coloured Momo leather. Crashed it in an aquaplaning accident. Classic case of spending your last penny on the car and having nothing left to renew tyres in time.

Always loved these as a kid. Got myself a Phase 1 V6 Spider a couple years back after a loooong time waiting for a good model to come up second hand. Glad I snatched one before prices climbed. Still afordable, but have gone up in value 25%+ in the last 3 years, at least V6 models. If you want one I'd say be quick!.
V6 models have appreciated significantly, especially here in Italy, where everything wearing an Alfa badge is hot at the moment and V6s are rarer.
At the moment I'm not in the position of buying a classic car, but I'm dead set on a 115 Spider when it'll be the right moment.
@@Matteo_Licata Yep, prices have gone right up here in Spain too. 2.0s are selling for what you used to be able to snatch a V6 for not so long ago.
And 115 is a great choice. I would love to own a Series 1 some day, but I guess price is not on my side on that one. I'll have to settle for a Series 3 (or Series 2 if I'm lucky) eventually, but I feel in terms of looks they got worse on each restyle :(

I had a '96 Gtv for nearly 6 years, dark blue with white leather interior. Great handling car, loved it so much, I've had many nice memories of it. To me the first ones were the best looking, I didn't really like the front on the phase 3's, it was atrocious compared to the subtle scudetto of it's predecessors. Was hoping to buy a Ph1 Busso Gtv again one day, but the prices keep rising... Great video as always, thank you for your amazing work!

I agree. The facelift was simply a "marketing ploy" and makes the front look awkward. The smaller scudetto is much more appropriate for such a petit car. I still own my Gtv and as long as petrol is sold I will not give her up. If you still want one, now is the time. The market in many countries is in turmoil.

Nice history. My 04 RHD Rosso JTS Lusso Spider is a very rare car .. especially in Australia.

@@Matteo_Licata there is a healthy population in Australia and a history of successfully racing them for over 50 years. There’s a good AROCA club scene, club racing and even a GTV and Twin Spark Cup.

I was waiting for this one; & not disappointed. I think the cars 1st came to the UK in late spring of '96 if memory serves. Auto Italia had a great review of them in it (still have the copy). I prefer the phase 1 with its initial vision. I have a silver GTV sold from Reg Vardy in Cheshire that June. the cars have a fascinating design. Lots of lovely little touches like frameless doors, letter box windscreen, etc. Thanks for the video.

Avuta anche la 2.0 Twin Spark del 96, sempre bella ma il motore giusto è il 24v 3.0/3.2.
Anche come design preferisco la terza serie, che con il kit aerodinamico parziale (che consisteva nel labbro in plastica sotto al paraurti anteriore, per carenare le ruote e quindi migliorare la resistenza aerodinamica) e i cerchi da 17 è splendida, con un assetto ribassato di 1/1.5 cm poi ancora meglio!
E delle 3 serie è quella sicuramente invecchiata meno, sembra uscita ieri. Bel video, uno dei pochi interessanti su questo modello 👏

Same as a few years earalier the Volvo Tundra project from Bertone ended as a Citroen BX, the Alfa GTV was actually the Audi Quartz project from Pininfarina back 1980; as you can see if you Google, the concept, the front, the rear are nearly equal. Nice video, thanks

Beautiful car the 916 GTV. Back when Alfa had a decent lineup.
It's funny that the 155, GTV/Spider, 145/6 all have the same wheelbase although it may not look like at first glance. It's great how Alfa (and Fiat) made 5 different models out of a single platform, and nowadays having the Giulia platform that has been praised by the media, they won't even produce a coupe of that car. Shame really.
5:36 So, a GTV rear subframe should theoretically fit a 145/155 🤔. Giving it the multilink rear suspension. My mechanic told me the GTV project was meant to be a AWD as the Proteo, but it ended up being FWD only 🤷🏻♂️.
Good to see them appreciate in value, as '90s Alfas got a lot of hate for being FWD, but they remain more charismatic than anything that they made since. In my country they ask 15k to 25k USD for GTVs/Spiders hahaha. 145/155/164 for Youngtimer Alfa ownership it is then 😅.
As far as I know, there's never been any intention to make a 4WD GTV, not even at the design stage. I know that some Fiat Coupé owners who track their cars regularly have been fitting the GTV rear end, as it has more adjustability than the trailing arm setup used on the Fiat. I don't know if the aluminum subframe could fit all Tipo 2 cars though, as there may be some clearance issues with the different fuel tanks. But I'm speculating here, as I've never attempted such a swap.
Even the twin sparks are amazing. My dad had back in the day a 2.0ts. Now i have a phase 2 1.8ts. Thing handles good and its with winter tires plus the little 15 inch wheels.

@@Matteo_Licata a GTV. I bought it a few weeks ago after searching for a couple of years. Spring pans, poly bushes, cam belt, clutch, stainless exhaust all done. A1 interior, decent Vela blue paint and everything works. I paid just £1250 (€1400) and it’s wonderful 😁

@@Matteo_Licata I agree - the wife and I drove home thinking we’d be arrested for theft at that price. We washed the moss off it, a deep clean, new MOT, engine flush etc and it just purrs. Drivers of certain German brands seem to want to race; we let them go and remain looking cool 😎

There were so few of these sold in the UK that the survival rate it criminally low. Same with the FIAT Coupe........just all gorgeous
Lovely Alfas. I tested once a JTS, most beautiful than the previous versions but I didn't like it the JTS engine, you don't notice those extra HP and sound wise no comparison with the TS. Again, excellent video.

One question: I agree that type 2s are the most beautiful ones, but please advice me about the engine. I believe that 2.0 are easiest to find, but what about the horse power, 141, 155 or 166?

Regarding the Phase 2 engines, the Twin Sparks available were the 1.8 and 2.0, and there isn't much to separate them. I'd say go for the best example you can find within your budget, regardless of engine displacement and horsepower.

It's one of my favorite car ever. I remember when these where around 1000 euros here in Serbia, but now there are few left and the price tripled. It's very hard to find one in good shape.
They never got quite that cheap here in Italy, but prices for the very best ones have indeed been rising in the last few years. Busso-engined cars are priced at a significant premium over TS ones, at the moment.
@@Matteo_Licata they got cheap here for a reason, they were not being held in best condition and were serviced with the cheap parts and unskilled labor.
I could some gtv from enthusiast, but you don't have much choice.
I remember seeing that car in Gran Tursimo 2 and thinking that must be ugliest car every, and only when I saw one in front of my high school was I blown away. I feel in love and knew I want to have one.

The only thing alfa or other European cars need to make a drastic improvement is the 'reliability'. No worries about the design. Most can be relevant in any era.

While the SZ was the car that got me loving Alfas as a kid here in the States, this when I was about 13 is the car that got me to fully commit to the marque. I saw a few snaps of it in a brilliant light blue parked at the edge of what I believe is the river Arna near Florence and knew that when on a trip to Austria to see family that I had to see one. It was the late 90's by this point and we couldn't get so much as a drive in one without swimming for it and I finally got to see one in Tyrol. A TwinSpark, it was parked and modeled itself in black against the mountains,,,,,,,is there a way to speak of Alfas without sounding like you're describing your first love? lol

@@Matteo_Licata I would be, however, as much as I love the original car, for some reason I am smitten with the 2003+ version. Normally, I'm not a huge fan of updating a classic. But, that slatted grille with a slight bump to the hood works for me. Were a '96 V6 to come along in perfect condition at a fair price, I would indeed find myself wondering if the seller would accept PayPal or not. But, if it would be possible to have the engine and airbags removed and still get it aboard a ship to put it back together once over here to sidestep the regulators,,,,,,,,

The Phase 2 GTV is "the" modern classic Alfa. If I didn't have my 156 3.0 I would look for one and keep it forever. It would have to be in black with red leather, with 17" teledials. No Cup for me, I dislike the bodykit, give me the classic GTV shape without spoilers and side skirts any day.

Previous owner did, that was about 7 years ago. Apparently it's from a 166 and just fitted straight in there. Made 232bhp on the rolling road with standard 2.5 ECU! I was thinking about selling it but now I'll keep it forever.

Unique design and a generous engine options made this car stand out.
The only thing I dont like about this car is side line design which - to me - is like a radical cut which separates the car into two halves. With a more conservative side line the 916 would be among my favourite car designs ever and I would surely have bought one already....
Yep, another pair of modern classics although for me the Coupé Fiat is the leader of that pack. My association with the number 916 is however more with Fabio Taglioni's wonderfull Ducati motorcycle design. So it's high time for an extra channel! :-)
You're not the first one asking for a motorbike video... But I don't think it'll ever happen. I like to talk about things I know, and I'm not so much into bikes to teach anything about them.
I think the gtv knocks the coupe into a cocked hat, but we're all different!
Although if I was to buy a GTV I’d probably opt for the Alfetta based Giugiaro version, this is a beautiful car, and one that is rightly now regarded as a classic. I miss the genius of Pininfarina - modern cars have very little in the way of beauty sadly........
I bought a GTV 2 liter V6 turbo new in 1996. Early 1998, someone set it on fire in front of my house on the canals in Amsterdam. It completely burned out. The rear suspension was never good and the turbo failed once. I bought a Fiat Coupe 5 cylinder turbo to replace it in 1998. After 5K kilometers, its engine blew up due to failed timing belt. Did not buy another Italian car until last summer, when I got a rusted out 1972 Lancia Fulvia. It's almost done.

When I first saw pictures of it back in -94, I didn't like it. It didn't look proportional. Though, when I saw the first video of it in movement I changed my mind completely. That's when the lines really came to life and when I finally got to see one for real I knew it was gonna stay around. Never had one myself though, just didn't fit what I need from a car.

Hi Alex, with the right mods like Q2 diff, uprated rollbars from Alfaholics, and proper tyres, a 3.0 GTV can be made to handle quite well. I have been doing regular track days in mine for about 10 years now and its lots of fun. I recently acquired a low mileage 2016 Porsche GT4 and I am still enjoying throwing the GTV around, so fwd or no, it can't be that bad!

I love your videos and have had a few Alfas, but I have to say I found the GTV and Spider to be a disappointment. There is no comparison with the later Brera which was truly orgasmic.
The world would be a pretty boring place if we all liked the same things, wouldn’t it? :)
The Brera was a much more modern design than the GTV and I can see why you preferred it. It’s all about what someone expects from a car and the way it’s used.

oggi ovviamente e' solo storia, non c'e' piu' nessuna traccia di quel retaggio, ma se gia' fiat falli' nel tentativo di entrare in un segmento diverso dalle utilitarie quando era da sola (mi ricordo argenta e similari, che non reggevano in nessun modo il confronto con le alfa o le tedesche), perche' farsi concorrenza interna dopo aver acquisito anche alfa? (lasciamo perdere le modalita' con cui alfa arrivo' sotto fiat, cosi' come lancia... ma vabbe').
non vedo il senso di tirare fuori la coupe' fiat, quando avevi in dirittura d'arrivo la gtv... cosi' come del resto il senso della chroma quando avevi intenzione di fare thema e 164... se le ultime due hanno un loro senso, puntando piu' sull'eleganza e il comfort per la thema, e sulla sportivita' per la 164, chroma, pur essendo stata un'auto validissima (ne abbiamo avute 2 o 3 in famiglia, dalla 2.0 cht, niente di che, alla turbo, e quella si che era divertente) non avrebbe avuto alcun senso in un'ottica di salvaguardia di lancia e alfa.
lancia in quell'epoca era gia' defunta, con l'oscena delta hpe o la dedra... (si salvava la q4, ma ne hanno fatte pochissime, e costava uno sproposito).
per poi, pochi anni dopo, tornare sul tema coupe' con l'alfa gt... brutta, semplicemente, rispetto alla gtv.
Comprendo ma non condivido.
Fiat ha commesso una lunga serie di errori, di cui sono stato anche in parte testimone, lavorandoci due anni. Da una parte è vero che Fiat rilevò Lancia ed Alfa per evitare che finissero in mano a concorrenti, dall'altra non si possono negare i notevoli sforzi fatti su Lancia durante tutti gli anni 70 ed 80, e poi i grandi successi con Alfa Romeo a cavallo degli anni 90 e 2000.
Sia Lancia che Alfa Romeo non erano in condizioni di continuare ad esistere da sole, ed una loro acquisizione da parte di soggetti terzi era l'unica via alternativa alla bancarotta. Per Lancia non c'erano soggetti stranieri realmente interessati, mentre Alfa l'avrebbe presa la Ford... Ma non possiamo sapere se sarebbe andata meglio o peggio con la Ford. Si può speculare quanto si vuole, ma non ci sono basi per affermarlo.
@@Matteo_Licata guarda, come avrai forse intuito dalla risposta dell'altro video, sono di torino... ahime' conosco l'atteggiamento fiat, e come ha agito.
tu dici che ha fatto bene per lancia, si, non l'avrebbe forse rilevata nessuno... ma tagliare la stratos per portare avanti 131 nei rally e' stata la prima enorme minchiata.
chiudere con i rally la seconda (e' anche vero che tutta la vera squadra vincente ormai era evaporata... visto che le lancia rally non sono opera di fiat, ma abarth e altri grandi messi insieme, e in gran parte confluita in autodelta).
alfa aveva mercato eccome... ma ovviamente essendo statale, e trovandoci nel "regno agnelli", piuttosto che venderla, e bene, ad un competitor che l'avrebbe valorizzata (il marchio alfa e' piu' apprezzato all'estero, specie in oriente, che non in italia), e oggi non farebbero solo suv, e mai sarebbero usciti aborti come la mito.
I prefer the phase 1 actually. And the phase 3 nose is an abomination.
