This Is The Best Tuned V6 Engine

- Most of the time, V6s are far behind straight-sixes as the inline engine offers more of a natural balance, simpler design and easier maintenance. There are not as many renowned V6s, but the car community is somehow more aware of the Alfa Romeo V6 'Busso' than any other six-cylinder of such type. What makes it so special?

I had a friend in business school who owned a 147 GTA. The sound it made would have you singing Italian opera music.
Yeah, my colleague too had a 156 GTA 3.2
The sound was amazing.
From idle to top rev
Lol 👍
Your production quality gets better with every video. Such a pleasure to watch
Thank you!
I'm with you there, awesome to watch.
im always watching these videos too automotive industry is never boring
@@VisioRaceris truth mate! make a video with toyota 1.8 2zzge vvtLi pleaseee!
Soon he can even say Toyota ;)
as an italian petrolhead and alfa romeo fan, this video caused me goosebumps
Yeah its cool when something from your homeland is covered.
Im Aussie, so when Europe or North America covers the Aussie Ford 4.0L "Barra" I6, its pretty humbling.
As a German Petrolhead, I respect you Italians for building such a wonderful Engine and giving our Engines a proper fight in DTM.

Alfa Romeo V6 Busso is the best V6 engine ever made a true legend and unforgettable sound
As a huge Alfista I really liked your well made video. My Dad (also an Alfista) has a 82 GTV6 Balocco with some modifications done to it, like decat, tubular headers, beefier cams and so on. And that car shows me over and over again why especially the GTV6 2.5 Liter Engines are called „Violine di Arese“. Such a smooth well balanced engine with a Glorious Soundtrack.
Hope that I can own my own Busso one day.
I love this engine, I worked at a Ford Dealer, little italian man came in with a 5 speed 164 S, had 211k on it and was still in good shape and ran like a top. They gave him 600 dollars as a trade in on a focus ST, you bet your sweet ass I slapped a dealer plate on it and took it for a rip! The salesman were ignorant and laughing at the "old red car" until they heard the busso rev and smoke the tires off, I wanted to buy it after that... They told me 3k, thinking back on it still worth it, of all m5s, trans ams, corvettes, gt500s, jaguars, I've driven.. The little high miles 164 S was one of my top drives ever, you just can't buy soul. I ended up taking the owners manual out of it which had everything! I would sit in it on break, still smelled like italian leather, I regret not buying it
Traded for a POS Focus. Sad. Also they were selling it for 5x what they gave him on trade? What a sad excuse for a reputable car dealer. Scumbags.
@@T..C..M To an employee no less, I should have said a grand. It would have been a lot of heartache but also a beautiful summer cruiser
In Brazil, Fiat sold 164 5 speed manual and 4 automatic.
The engines were 12v and 24v.
12v has better response in lower rpms, 24v only wake up in 5.000 rpm.
oh beautiful read...like my missed chances with hot dark south italian girls... i sadly have to admit such a regret, having tried so many others and just wasted time... always listen to your inner passion voice, always...
I owned a couple Alfa Romeo's in my life and miss them both.
I owned a 1976 Alfetta GTV Mario Andretti Limited Addition #5 of #150 made!
My little Alfa GTV had the 4 cylinder 2000cc motor.
A lot of fun until I bought a 84 Alfa GTV6. That engine sounded so fantastic and while not the quickest Car, boy
it's Roll on Speed while passing someone was The Best Feeling/Sound/Experience of any car or Motorcycle I have ever owned.
I have owned close to 30 Cars and Motorcycles in my life.
Used to have a Alfa 156 2.5 V6 Busso. Absolutely glorious engine. Drank fuel like it was leaking it, but so worth it to hear that Busso engine sing its song 🎵
I remember a went to buy an Alfa GTV coupe. The owner started it and I heard that engine from about 50 meters away. It sounded glorious. I drove it too. The 3L V6 way too fast for ridiculous Australian speed limits. My only gripe with that car was I couldn't get comfortable seating position and it was meant to be a weekend cruiser. But the sound, torque and power is something that's forever etched into memory. The legends are true about this engine. No headphones can replicate the bark of this V6 in real life. Go to a car meet and listen to the symphony of this sonorous 6.
Our speed limits are fairly standard. I'm more annoyed at how over regulated our roads are.
I had a 2005 Alfa Romeo 147 GTA a few years ago, definitely one of the greatest sounding V6s ever!
Sadly due to financial issues I had to sell it :(
Alfa Romeo love (Italian car love?)is expensive $💔$.
😉
@@leewright7623 Relatable. Grandpa had a 155 and he had to sell it due to rent and him getting old.
@@heymedic6398 same here, my dad owned a 155 super which he had poured maybe 12000 pounds into over 10 years, it had fully uprated suspension brakes etc, fiat coupe 20VT engine conversion remapped to 260HP, uprated exhaust, lots of rare parts like carbon fibre wind mirrors, zender sideskirts from the Fiat Coupe, and a raised silverstone spoiler. pretty much a monster and sounded beautiful too with that inline 5, truly unique. he had to sell it earlier this year because of financial difficulties but ill never forget that car
For the last 3 month now I am a owner of a 166 manual with a 3.0 Busso. I fricking love it! This Engine is just so pleasant to drive, comfortable at low revs for crusing and gloriously screaming if you exceed 4k RPMs. The 166 drives really not how you would expect a car from that class. Its incredibel sporty, the throttle response is instant and the setup even allows the back to stick out, no boring understeer like so many others.
Thanks for your great content!
i have alfa 166 with busso ❤
amazing car
I hate that you could have the more modern Busso engines with only FWD, just three years later after it was gone they turned around and made the brilliant Q4 system which was full-time and transversally mounted, with none of that viscous clutch crap every AWD uses nowadays because they can't be bothered to figure out how a differential works, imagine the 159 with a busso, that thing would wipe the floor with Audi's S4
Even a Brera Q4 with a Busso would've been amazing
I'm not a big Alfa Romeo guy, but I was sad when I was told that the 159/Brera/Spider trio don't use the Busso V6, instead going for GM's Alloytec V6 range. On paper, the numbers still seem pretty strong, but financially, you're better off buying a 159 TBi over the 3.2 V6. Still, the 159's design is truly timeless and if it were to be released today, it would still look modern and fresh.
Also, fun fact, the 159 was supposed to be a joint venture with Saab and the second generation 9-3 was supposed to share its platform with the 159.
You can make a 24v Busso work in a 75 or a GTV6, it’s been done before.
marcin sroda on youtube has got your back. He made a 166 with the AWD from a 159 and a Lancia engine. Check out his channel but just for this discussion, here's the 166's AWD system in action: ua-cam.com/video/RXmCWTHTglI/v-deo.html
The 159 was too heavy due to the GM platform never used by any other car. I used to have one and if only it would have been a bit lighter and mogę agile. But if there was a standard 159 with a Busso I would buy it over the 166. I loved that car
I had 2 Alfa 75's in my life, and i will say those hemi head Busso V6's are some of the best of all time, the rear transaxle is bullet proof as well.
A joy to drive
As an italian, I really appreciate your video. Great video ;)
Glad to hear that!
I am so excited you covered this engine, one of my all time favorites and possibly the only V6 I am truly fond of!
when you have a knoking sensor
but you still want to knock to death
Without any doubt the best sounding V6 ever made, with the one from Ferrai Dino/Lancia Stratos.
Nice to see such a positive video about Alfa and the Busso V6 , a Engine that is one of Its kind.
I once owned a 3.0 164 and may dad a Thesis 3.0 , and this engine was the highlight in both cars. Nice Video !
I had a 166 3.0 V6 24V and what a glorious rav happy engine it was! Glad my brother bought it and i still drive it some times! That engine never gets boring! That unique sound especially under the bonnet due to the chrome intakes are just so cool! It now has close to 300k and still the engine is very healthy!
I had a 155 with the 2.5 V6. The looks were amazing and steering quite direct, but the rest of the car was average. Now the engine, it is hard to convey how deep the sound was, and how rev hungry it was, so that it made it feel so much faster than it really was.
The 155 was a gorgeous car. We rented one in Italy back in the day.
That sound stirs the soul!!!
Had the pleasure of owning a low mileage Kappa 3.0 V6 with some exhaust mods...loved the scream it made in high revs and the looks when people realised that an old boxy Lancia was producing that glorious sound as it went past them....
My mission is to own as many cars possible with iconic engines, I currently own a 3.6 Vr6 and looking to get a 6.3 V8 AMG in the near future
Vr6. A man of taste
Get an AMG with the M113K 5.5 V8!
A whiteblock Volvo R should be in your list. The baby v10

Had 12 and 24v Bussos in 164s, both great engines. Never tried the 2l turbo though, would love to.
Very nice video !
I have à GT 3.2, always à pleasure to drive and the sound is 😍😍😍
Im italian and i know very well busso engine.
Your video give it the right credit.
Thank you visio!
What a pleasure to see such a wonderful material. Thank you! I'm driving a 166 with 3.0 V6 Busso and its sound indeed is a symphony.
I know this guy at the minute 9:22. It's Alfonso Cutino from AC Motor Engineering in Edinburgh. He is a really Alfa specialist.
The one red in the video it's a 3.0 V6 24v supercharge. It's a beast.
Great to see you man on this video
Having owned the 2.5V6 and 3L 24V and now on the brink of buying a 12V 3.0 I can attest to this engines sound response and character. I've also owned the bmw in-line 6 and VR6 but find the busso to be the superior engine for response sound and character
Try a vr6 with the vsr manifold if you get the chanse. (The way the vr6 was ment to be,.. sadly wasnt due to cost cutting)
But it comoletely transforms the engine.
@@tim1polman I've heard quite of few variantions and different types of modifications on the VR6 and it's a lovely engine.....but listen to this :
ua-cam.com/video/JJuDiIKBhdU/v-deo.html
I was thinking that Busso vs VR6 would be a good comparison.
You're making some great videos lately. This is really top quality stuff and the whole way you told the story, the editing and the clips made it feel like I was part of it.
Love the Busso and very impressed how far you've come along.
That's really pleasing to hear, thank you!
One of the most underrated engine.
It was both good looking and good performance
Nice video! One remark, the Autodelta version of the 147 GTA was not developed by Alfa's race department but by a still existing British tuner by the same name. I own a 159 tuned by the same company (with a 2.2 compressor)
Currently at my shop we have a busso engine that we are currently making custom sleeves for because they stop making the sleeves. Plus I'm going to rebuild the cylinder heads!! I'm so excited because Alfa has always been my #1 favorite company in the world, and I'm going to rebuild one literally makes my year!
Visio, you have done an amazing job of this video. I would call it a mini documentary. Your researching skills have become so much better and attention to detail is really good now. Well done and keep it up!
Darcy, I appreciate it very much. That was and is my attempt for any future videos. I am working on a motorcycle engine video for Saturday, also an old unit.
The screaming 12v sounds just that bit more impressive. Those Luigi and Snobeck tuned ones :p pure porn.
Had a GTV 2.0 V6 TB..... glorious sound and with 1 bar overboost pulls very hard
This is some very high quallity content here! Amazing.
Thankfully it finally gets the recognition it deserves, aan V6 that lasted over 30 years. Just amazing
Great video! As an newly Alfa lover and 159 owner, this was very informative for me and also very interesting 🤩
Very nice video. I bought a 156 GTA and still have it, fell in love with Alfa Romeo. It‘s a virus as many say..
You will have 1M subs soon. Such awesome videos!
Jim Kartalamakis has written a book dedicated to all Busso : The Alfa Romeo V6 Engine High Performance Manuel with some imputs from us and our experience of Race Busso
Really great videos! What a beautiful engine, the sound is just amazing 😉
I had a 3.0 24V Busso in my 916 GTV, it was really good sounding. Really thirsty in city driving tho :D
Thank you so much!!! I’ve been waiting for you to do a episode on this engine.
Glad to hear that!
I've had my 3.2 for 17 years ,still love it
Thank god I had one Alfa 164 with this wonderful peace of engineering.
I loved the characteristics and sound of the 3 liter Busso in my 164, back in '96.
Really appreciate the effort you put into your content
Thank you, I do my best!
Woop! Just recently got my 1998 156 2.5 fitted with straight catback exhaust. Sings! Great video on the engine!
Hi Visio...Your video really really helps me a lot always..You are like an History Teacher and an Engineer Teacher to me because you do a lot of Research and you put in on video...I always take notes on all of your videos for Example the Highhest revving 2 stroke and how they rev so high i always take notes those so Thank you Mate cheers and Godbless.

A friend had an Alfa 75 V6 with race cams, that sounded amazing, and pulled so well.
Damn how awesome that 164 looks
The SZ is an amazingly beautiful car!! This is the first time I’ve seen it!!
I'm proud to be italian, and i love Alfa Romeo (a 1993's 164 2.0L Twin Spark was my dad's car for all my childhood 😎)
Amazing video, but you forgot to mention something very important: during Busso's funeral a plethora of Alfa owners gathered and escorted Busso one last time revving his engine that was, and still is, so loved.
Loving the video bro, excellent work
I have a 3.2l in my GT and i can confirm the engine is solid even after 300.000 km with no major issues, the fuel consumption compared to my mom's vw golf is so ludicrous it makes me cry when gassing it up
I watch all your videos. Great content!
One of your best efforts yet. Deep dive and no suprise
Thank you!
Great video! I was quite surprised to see some of my old footage of my 1750 Twin Cam. Cheers 👍
Glad you like it!
I was playing around in Assetto Corsa one day, and I was surprised to learn that Alfa mostly uses V6 engines, even though they sounded so much deeper and V8-ish
Great report on the heart of our racing cars !
The sound has to be heard IRL.. amazing 👏
Great history lesson. Sounds so good
Even old Alfa Romeo have twin cam called BIALBERO (BI = TWIN) AND (ALBERO = shaft). The sound of a Naturally Aspirated DOHC is beautiful.
Now in 2022 in Italy you can find a used one for under 10k $.
Awesome vid with epic clips.
I had a 1981 GTV-6 and LOVED that car! The engine made such wonderful sounds and ran great, once the head gaskets were replaced. The mechanic I use now has a customer car in his lot, a Calloway Twin-Turbo GTV-6, which I may go steal one night.
Great video! Thank you!
