    Welcome back everyone. Let's mix things up a little. Not going to be to everyone's taste but it's a fun tank that shows you can have nice plants with "regular" tank décor. I think we forget sometimes that the most popular section in a fish store is the sculpture section. Let's do something cool with one😊

      MD, I really wonder how you can just grow about every plant with just some ‘random’ lighting and not a lot of fertilisation. While most of the plants in this video are categorised as ‘Medium’ or ‘Advanced’ by Tropica. Seriously, what is your secret? 😂

      @@joostvandenhoek9409 A combination of Experience, Moxie and perfect tap-water, and sheer number of plants.

    • @joostvandenhoek9409
      @joostvandenhoek9409 3 роки тому

      @@temushin Although I could agree with the ‘experience’ part, I don’t think the ‘sheer amount of plants’ would help with plantgrowth itself. If it’s a difficult plant, the majority of them won’t do well.
      And what do you mean with ‘moxie’?

    • @temushin
      @temushin 3 роки тому +1

      @@joostvandenhoek9409 Moxie as in: force of character, determination, or nerve. - it was kind of a tongue-in-cheek answer.
      And I'm pretty new to planted tanks, but when dealing with ecosystems in general, they tend to balance themselves a lot better when you have a wide variety of life pulling in nutrients rather than a monoculture... in this sort of case different plants can slow and accelerate their growth according to the nutrients available, whereas if you have just one plant, that, say, requires a lot of potassium, it will max its growth-rate by consuming all the potassium, but you'll have an overabundance of other nutrients, resulting in algae. If you have different plants with different requirements they'll more easily find an equilibrium. It also helps that he's starting with healthy plants that are mostly already adapted to his growing conditions... the closest LFS to me is 3-hours away, and with covid etc. not really an option. I have to order plants on-line. They're sometimes brown sludge when I get them, and even if not, they often melt after going in the tank, which alters nutrient balance all by itself. The biggest thing, though, is probably his water. He did an episode where he tested it and it pretty much falls right in the middle of all the recommendations for most plants (like George Farmer predicted on his show). On the other-hand, my tap water starts with a gH that's literally off the charts and a pH of 8.4 so now I'm having to go with a mix of RO and tap-water, or switch to remineralized RO. :P I'm not trying to take any credit away from MD at all, he does an awesome job... just suggesting some ways in which he's set up for success... plus there's the Moxie.

    • @joostvandenhoek9409
      @joostvandenhoek9409 3 роки тому

      @@temushin I agree, and I understand what you’re saying. But my question was actually why he’s able to grow plants that would normally require CO2 and high lighting. Do you know wether those tapwater tests also showed quite high background levels of CO2? That could be the explanation behind most of it

      And let's be honest, it's not a BAD hardscape. It may suffer slightly because of the quality of the ship model, but the concept isn't exactly offensive to the eyes. I could definitely see myself making something similar out of a more detailed or realistic ship, but that's because I also like doing model ships.
      Oh, oh no. There's that feeling. The "I'm about to go spend money I don't have" feeling. Please, help me. Stop me before I hit up my hobby stores again!

    I would absolutely veto anything like that in a fish tank - but I don't have kids, and if I did I hope I would have the same "why not?" reaction as you and just go for it! Fishtanks are essentially toys, so let them be fun. And if that takes a plastic pirate ship? Then that's clearly the right way to go!

    Great vid to get younger viewers into better fish keeping. Best way to get that barf gravel and 1/2 gallon bowls phase out

    My son and I have scaped his 5 gallon several times. His T-Rex skull is always in it! This last time he did the whole scape himself. He's 9. It's great way for them to take part in it.

    Hey man good on ya! We parents have to do stuff like this to get the kiddos into the hobby. There absolutely has to be a fun element for the young ones. Thanks for breaking beyond the traditional and looking to what the littles might like. I love what you do! Keep it up!

    being a hotwheel collector, ive thought of building a tank with die cast cars before so I think the little guy is on to something lol. Im not sure if they are safe being in an aquarium with fish but id like to see a goofy build like that. Keep up the good content, ive learned a lot from the channel

      Dude thatd be coooool, like a shipping freighter sunk and it had a whole bunch of cars on it. Then the scape could have shipping containers and cars laid out all over. Cool concept man

    This is nice. But I was really hoping for the kids tank idea you had before, which was to let them choose everything themselves, colored substrate, decorations, fish (within reason), and that they would tell you how to decorate it, where to put everything within the tank. That would be so cute and so much fun. I think they'd really get a kick out of doing that.
