Hobby photographer here. I have picked up several to add to the collection but in reality I only need one of those. They are all just toys for me to play with so I can relax. There is no push for me to get anything done. I liked your presentation and reasoning. Good stuff.

I’m really just an advanced hobbyist who have shot events and weddings for money from time to time but mainly shoot for the art and enjoyment of it and I have a Canon 1DX, 1DX MKII, Canon Power shot G16 and GX7, GoPro: two 5’s, 10 and 360

I still use a 12 yo professional camera because it has a huge shutter resource and works flawlessly in low temperatures and high humidity. Both in the streets and in the studio, that's my working horse. As long as I stay below ISO 250-320 with the day light or strobes I stick to it. If I shoot in a club, at night or I need more delicate halftones I switch to a recent semi-pro body with a smarter image processor. Both are APS-C, interchangeable lenses. So far this approach has never let me down. Diversify and create, guys.

Finally!! A good use for a zoom- to help figure out which prime to (actually) use! Ha ha... great story
Three bodies: Two D750s married to normal and medium telephoto primes. D500 married to a long zoom. Several happy marriages there, and one (very) happy me.
(And as of now, pretty affordable bodies)
    Great video, as always!

I'm just a hobby shooter and confess to owning three Bodies and four lens. None of which I NEED. But, I just like to own and use and appreciate the engineering that goes into them.
I also like to take pictures as well 😀

I have many more cameras than I actually need.
However, I actually only need the following:
    a. 4x5 large format film monorail view camera with four lenses
    b. RB67 medium format SLR film camera with seven lenses
    c. Nikon F2 35mm film SLR with two dozen lenses
    d. Leica M6 35mm film rangefinder with three lenses
    e. Fuji X-Pro2 APS-C digital mirrorless with eleven lenses

I have two Sony Alpha bodies (A7RIII and A9) and carry them both when I travel.
A7RIII is for landscape and people photography (24 - 70 mm GM) while A9 I use almost strictly for wildlife (birds) and 200-600 mm nearly never leaves that body. Yes, it does attract looks in less traveled destinations but this, two camera setup, enables me to take a lot of different shots.
    Thx for great content!

I was a black and white only professional wedding photographer back in the 1950s and 1960s and used 2 Yashica mats. Trix x film with Unitol development. Bromesko paper.
I did a wedding for a friend in 2008 with a Nikon D40 with 18 70 and 55 to 200 lenses with a Sb600 speedlight. Someone else shot video. The pictures were great but the stress was high as it was back in the old days.
Now I please myself andI am back to medium format film with a Rolleicord Va and a Kiev 6c with a 90mm 2.8 lens.
I also have a Nikon FE with a 55mm 2.8 ais macro lens.
I collect old cameras from 1910 to 1980s. I use them occasionally to kept the oils in them free and my own juices flowing.
I have about 20 and rescue others when people give them to me.
Latest gift to me is a Pentax Auto 110 with a flash and couple of lenses. Film is available again so it's working again. Say Aaah.
Best camera that anyone can pick up and shoot successfully with is an Olympus Af1 35mn 2.8 lens.
Weatherproof and the results are wonderful. Prints for an album.
    My laptop is never used.
I have a Huawei P10 plus smart phone with a great camera that I use for WhatsApp, Internet, Instagram, Email, UA-cam et al.
    I love my photographic life.

The story of a bad camera reminds me of shooting over 20 rolls of film before I realized that the focusing screen in my camera had been jarred out of place. Every photo on those 20-some rolls was out of focus. Some of those photos were for what would have been paid work. In addition to lost income opportunity, processing all that film to find no usable photos wasn't cheap.
I've not done paid photography work in 30 years, but I usually have multiple cameras for a variety of reasons. My top two reasons are (1) that I often like to carry two cameras in order to have quick access to two different lenses and (2) that I prefer different cameras for different purposes. I've recently switched to all mirrorless cameras, but I still regularly use three different cameras from the same maker: one full frame and two APS-C. I prefer each of the three cameras for different things.

As you mentioned, the fastest lens change is having a second camera.ready to go; and that works for me. To manage costs, it always seems to be the just-discontinued model. As I recently changed from Canon to Fuji (size, weight savings), it paid for extra.lenses. And like you, it's best not to count the really old cameras. We'd be in the support group together.

I’m a non pro but seem to be evolving to that effect. I have three digitals, one cell phone and I’m always open to having one of my many 35mm SLR cameras in my work bag to capture the boats I work with on the river during amazing sunrise events. I have recently implemented an old m43 Lumix into my landscape routine as that it has a mega zoom with image stabilization and a flippy screen so I can shoot off my knee while driving my boat and if it falls in the water I can pick up another one for a couple hun or just chalk it up as experience and adapt to another camera to keep it interesting, always aiming for the best results.
For fast high paced portraiture and fashionista projects I’m inclined to use my XH1 with my old XT1 as a back up using native digital lenses for their image quality and autofocus while exposing both my camera and lighting manually. It seems to me it all could be simpler but this is where I’m at with it.
Your vid aside from being informative and insightful looks great- set, lighting, exposure, focal length and delivery. 👍🏼

I finally took the leap and purchased a second D850. I'm not a full time shooter, so to justify a second body wasn't happening. I rented a second body for a couple of jobs and spending time going through the menus to put in my preferred settings is what convinced me to get a second body. Haven't been happier.
Happy Holidays to you and your family Daniel!

I have a total of 5 camera bodies. Each one has its strengths and weaknesses. 2 Full frame Nikons D810 and D610 backup. A Crop sensor Nikon D500 for action sports. Then two Micro 4/3rds one for studio Team & Ind. Shoots and one as a backup and also for street photography.

  • @MikeJamesMedia
    @MikeJamesMedia 4 роки тому

All smart reasons for backups, Daniel, and although I don't make my living via photography, I shoot a few professional jobs per year. (been shooting since 1974) I shoot Nikon, and right now, I own a D810 and a D500. The D500 has a higher pixel density than the D810, so if required, (i.e., shooting at an air show) I can put more pixels per inch on a subject with the D500, if I want to. For me, the D810 is for high resolution stills, and the D500 is for speed and filed of view change. I own a 14-24mm, 24-70mm, 70-200mm, 200-500mm, along with a 100 mm macro, and 50mm prime. (all full-frame lenses) So, on the D500, the zooms give me a field of view of 21-36mm, 36-105mm, 105-300mm, and 300-750mm. This setup lets me do everything I want to do, and (aside from the 200-500mm) it's not a super-heavy system to carry around. (Of course, if money was no object, I would own a wider variety, but as it is, I don't feel "handicapped".)

    Fuji xt2 and Fuji xh1
I had only the xt2 at first but i need a second camera wich is also capable of shooting 4k for 30 minutes. And it is also the same quality unlike the Fuji x e2 i had before as second camera.
And even tough the xh1 is maybe a better photography camera with better functions, the xt2 feels like slipping in a perfect fitting glove.

Im in a prime lens mood right now so 2 cameras , a 23 on one and 50 on the other gets me most of what I need. I had the shutter on a Nikon FM 2 fail while I was photographing Willie Nelson, glad I shot some on that 8008s !!

I have two of the same body, and carry both with different lenses. Additionally, the second body is a backup in case one goes bonkers, as Daniel says. Carrying two with different lenses when in the field eliminates most of the lens changing that lets in dirt.

I am not a professional, but done some photo shoot for a customer requiring a hotel rooms to be photographed. I used consumer level cameras, but definitely made sure I had also backup camera and other stuff for backup. The cameras themselves are not so expensive, but missing the opportunity (or time window) would have hurt me (and the hotel keeper also) bad because there is some arrangements involved to make sure there is enough time to shoot the rooms and interiors meaning hotel customers have to be turned away for that time. That time schedule must be obeyed, after all there is customers in the hotel so better have 2 camera systems ready for the work at the moment schedule says there is short moment available to make the shots, because the hotel customers must also soon get back their services they pay for.

    Currently Shooting with 4 Cameras
My paid work is Studio Portraiture for that I have Pentax K-1 (Full Frame) as my main body and my older Pentax K-3 (APSC) as a backup or second body - it has faster fps and a greater reach - it has a higher megapixel count than the K-1 does in crop mode so I use it if I know I need the reach rather than cropping from the K-1.
I also have a Fuji XF10 - which was bought mainly because it'll fit in the front pocket of my jeans so I actually take it place with me comfortably.
My last camera is the DJI Osmo Pocket - I obviously use this for video which I am experimenting with a bit at the moment - it has great image quality a gimbal head and fits in my pocket so I see it as ideal to capture a bit of vlogging and B-Roll so that I can learn Premier pro /davinci etc.

I have two Canon 6D bodies. I shoot live music so keep a different lens on each body. If it's a small venue it will be a 16-35 f/2.8 or maybe a superwide prime on one and a 24-70 f/2.8 on the other. At bigger venues I'll use a 70-200 f/2.8 instead of a wide. It just saves having to swap lenses in the pit, or worse still, if there is no pit. Also if you only get three songs or less there's no time for swapping lenses. Like you, I'll not mention all old film cameras.

D750, xt3, xt20, rx100m3, a7rii. As an amateur I don't need backup cameras but having cameras that are more portable than others is extremely important to me. I often find that the Sony rx100 or the Fuji xt20 is with me as they are so easy to carry. The d750 is my general purpose workhorse - absolutely love it with cheap vintage lenses. The xt3 is brilliant with a long lens - af system is superior. Probably could live without the Sony a7 but simply had to see what 42mp would do for a landscape shot. I probably will go for x-1 camera where x is when my wife shouts: "you got too many cameras!" 🙃

Generally, two bodies. To prevent lens exchange as much as possible to prevent dust getting in.
We generally do not need more than 24MP. So, imagine a Z 7 with the very good 24 prime and you can easily crop to 50mm angle of view. Then a Z 6 with an 85 prime. Now you spent less than buying bodies with expensive zooms, carry less weight and look less intimidating when your shots have excellent detail. And you have one body that can do video more elegantly.
I never used zooms. You train your brain more easily to learn the angle of view of your lenses and after some time you don't need to look through the camera anymore to see the frame, perspective, etc.

I sold a couple of bodies (Nikon D7000 and D600) and half a dozen lenses three years ago to buy into the Fuji X system -- my introduction to mirrorless. That left me with a D800 and an old F90X film camera. I also have a variety of other medium format film cameras.
So now, I have the X-Pro2 and three Fujinon lenses and the D800. Then, last spring I bought the Nikon Z6 and use the D800 for backup, though it stays mostly in the bag. I'm slowly building native lens collection for the Z6 and plan to buy a second Z6 body next week -- they're that good, for stills and video.
I've also owned a GoPro Hero2 for 8 years and (as per my latest video) "Mrs. Claus" bought me the Hero8 for Christmas.
I'll be selling the Fuji system and ... maybe ... the D800, but keep my F-mount lenses.

I just recently retired my old Nikon D3200 after receiving a sizable amount from a injury settlement case and I went out and bought a series of cameras.
    1) Nikon Z6: For when I start my UA-cam channel in the new year, this will be my primary video camera for most of my work with that and a backup stills camera
    2) Nikon Z7: My primary stills camera for business and personal enjoyment which I will be using when recording my tutorial videos
    3) Sony Cybershot RX100 VII: This is going to be my run and gun vlogging camera and backup video camera for the Z6
    4) DJI Osmo Action: This is going to be a third backup vlogging camera and used for run and gun vlogging
    5) Insta360 One X: Going to use this when I want to get really creative with my social media for photos & video
    6) DJI Mavic Mini: Going to be my B Roll camera for my UA-cam channel and new hobby
I also have 3 mic systems for all depending on what I am doing. I have the Rode Videomicro for use on the Sony and Osmo Action, Deity boom mic for in studio work where I am just talking straight to the camera and the Rode GO wireless mic system for when I am moving around alot and want to still have great audio while moving around

I have done some shots that would require HSS and the images are ok with the 5300. But now! I always take two. Nikon D500 as a primary - very capable DX (crop-sensor) for the reach, autofocus system, etc. - mainly for sports but general purpose as well. D5000 as a secondary, several steps down the Nikon scale (and 9 years old!) -- just as you said, this was the one I kept as a backup when I upgraded to the D500. My D200 third camera got passed on to my daughter. I also have remote releases for both cameras, and of course all my lenses and flashes are fine on either.
As for other stuff - GoPro for action and remote wide-angle stills, and a pile of film cameras for fun - 6x6 and 35mm, several of each that work, plus an expanding assortment of non-working "shelf queens". :)

I’m a “purpose driven” camera guy. I love a good all around camera, but I prefer a specific camera for a specific purpose. I currently have two D810s, one with an L bracket on it for landscape work and another with a vertical grip on it for portrait work. I also have a D500 for sports and wildlife. I still have one of my old D750s with over 300K shutter actuations as a video camera. I use a fujifilm X100S for kick-around street/“snapshots”.
I want to get rid of one of the D810s in favor of one of the Fujifilm Medium format cameras, but I haven’t been able to justify the expense yet. And I won’t discuss my vintage film cameras either.

Side note, the osmo image quality seems better than the mivo.
I have one camera. Purely due to current budget. However, now that I have a decent kit of a body, lenses, and lights. My next purchase is a second body as revenue grows. I do use your method of renting a second body for paid jobs. I also planned on buying the newer generation body and keeping my current as a backup.

Missed buying the Leica Q - 'Snow' (white) limited edition in February 2018 @ $5,395 which is less than half the price compared to M10-P (white) that comes @ $14,500 and with taxes/custom-duty, it cost me $18,170. Also, need to get other accessories like Thumb-Support, VF-Magnifier (1.4x), Soft Release Button (12mm), Display Protection Foil ... for a few $$$ extra.

    Good Advice.
Old cameras aren't worth a great deal.
So you tend to end up with a lot of cameras.
1 camera in the studio - you have spares.
at least 2 cameras in the field.
A third second backup can stay in the car.
Each camera can have a different lens - very quick.
And it reduced dust intrusion when changing lenses.

Even on a personal trip when the plane tickets cost as much as a camera/lens, I'll take 3 bodies and 3 lenses, same brand, not necessarily same models. For example, Yellowstone in the winter, E-M5ii plus 12-40 zoom, E-M1 with 40-150 zoom, E-M1ii with 300+1.4xTC. All three fit in a medium back pack if no grips are installed. If hiking extensively shooting wildlife and landscape, I might leave one body at camp/hotel. So minimum 2 bodies for anything I can't do over inexpensively. For work (industrial), always 2 bodies, duplicate shots with second body/lens when possible, download and check results on notebook before leaving site, backup to separate usb drive before leaving. Much less stress and worry with digital than when shooting Kodachrome/E6 slide film and not knowing. I don't miss E6 film and processing at all. Or C41. Or Tri-X. Or loading film on reels in a bag...

    Daniel,
Thanks for this video. It helps put things in perspective. I purchased sale-priced a Sony A2 on black Friday, and then added the Tamron 35mm 2.8 because what other excuse would you have not to shoot 35?mm But to the point of your comments. I purchased the DJI pocket to video capture my daughter over a year ago. Prior to purchasing the Sony camera or learning how much I do not know about photography, the DJI captured some cool panoramic pics from the Grand Canyon. And I find my phone (android) or my wife's iphone are a safety net for my focus limitations. (I am now moving to manual focus to eliminate any excuses.) So please keep sharing your thoughts and being an inspiration for the rest of us.

I really enjoy your videos, very informative. As to cameras, many is the short answer. In the film days I used the F5 and Contax 645 system I also used leicaM6 and ExPan for people/landscape. I keep them all! Today digital Nikon and Leica(collected a lot of M lenses over the years) Have not shot film in a long time although have stored film stored in the fridge

Hi Daniel, Old pro here who seems to hoard cameras- EOS 1ds (camera works but charger packed in), 1DmkIII, 5DmkII, 3x V series ‘blads (with digital back), Sinar F2 & P3, M8, R9 with DMR, Nikon D3, just took delivery of an EOS R two days ago... I need to clear some space, not that the old stuff is worth anything. Cheers Paul.

    5 cameras.
    D610 for anything wide angle.
    D500 for everything else.
    another D500 converted to infrared.
    D300 for camping/biking tossing around. (+ 2 older lenses 24 and 50)
    And a D5600 for my everyday walk-around.
And way more bags than cameras.

Having a backup saved my bacon this past summer. My main camera just stopped working while shooting a wedding. That wasn't the first time either. My back camera is generally the same brand, but I use my previous camera as the back up. On any given job I will have at least three cameras with me.

Right now I only have the Fujifilm X-T1. It's my first camera, bought used about 10 months ago. The sensor's not in great shape so I pretty much can't go over F/2.8 without introducing spots galore. So, it makes learning photography a fun challenge. My main equipment goal for 2020 is to get another Fuji camera body and then to see how much the sensor can be cleaned up.

My approach is I don't buy gear if it doesn't make money for me. I bought my D610 in 2014. It was my only body up until this year where I bought a Z6. Now I have the convenience when shooting events to have two bodies with a lens ready to go. For all my other work, two bodies doesn't make much difference for me. Oh, and my phone in my android and I still have my Minolta film body, who's lens have gained a second life too.

I have 4 cameras. 2 full frame Nikon d800 & d810 bodies and 2 aps-c Nikon d7200 bodies. I use full frame for portraits, important corporate events, weddings and aps-c for real estate and outdoor more casual events. I wish I could get by with only having the d7200 bodies and lenses.

    Personnaly I have 3 bodies
    - 1 FF 24 Mpix for reportage - Alpha 7
    - 1 FF 36 Mpix for studio and portrait but also a backup of the first one - Alpha 7r
    - 1 APS-C to be light - Alpha 6000
They all use the same mount so all my lenses work on all bodies. And all use the same batteries

That's exactly what I do. I kept my D5600 as a back up when I purchased my D810. I thought that would be a good idea for shooting at the shelter and for clients. When I go to the shelter I have a very limited time frame to do the shoot. If something goes wrong it would be a total waste of time etc. So, I always bring my D5600 as back up. Yes the full frame lenses do very well on it. I also bring a speed light (now I have two) just in case I have a problem with my main lights. Yes, I know they don't have the power as my main lights but I will still be able to come away with some decent shots. I don't want to waste the shelter's time if I have a malfunction. Thanks for reminding me to test my back up camera. I need to do that asap. It's been a while since I used it.

Daniel I'm a subscriber and I watch all your excellent content for which I thank you! I would note that for folks like me in relatively rural areas, there is no such thing as "rent locally". Also, there are certain situations where having two identical bodies comes in handy, for example event work where I have say a 24-70 and a 70-200 and have them set up identically makes it easy to drop one and grab the other depending on the situation at hand. But I understand your point of having two somewhat different bodies with different capabilities.

I'm living on the edge with just one camera. I'm going to buy a second body but I've been holding off until early next year on the advice of my tax accountant. Also, I have a Canon 5DIV and have been thinking about adding a Sony, either the A7RIV or the A9II. I settled on the A9, more or less, but then Canon rumors percolated about a 75 megapixel R that sounds pretty good. Then I watched a UA-cam video about a Canon 5DV that will be a hybrid between a DSLR and a mirrorless that will take both types of lenses. So now I'm just frozen with indecision (but still leaning toward the Sony A9).

I have today two main cameras. Nikon Z6 and D850. Then I bought a Nikon D5300 for my daughter and consider that one a backup for the backup (I am thinking of upgrading her to a Z50). I also have a Panasonic Lumix pocket camera ... that I wish to sell (so maybe I will change it for a Z50? and my daughter can keep her D5300 ...). I have two action cameras both Nikon KeyMission 170 (probably the only one in Sweden with two of those, one I bought as they where new, the other one I bought when a local store was selling them for less then half of the prize to get rid of them ... ) ... I also consider my iPhone to be a backup ...
For wedding and crucial work I take the Z6 and the D850 with me.
For my daily work as journalist I only take my Z6, here my iPhone works as backup. Or if I have a camera at home for a review, as I often do as freelance for a Swedish magazine, I use that one as main camera for my daily work and have my Z6 as the backup ... I am also part time employed and at that place I have access to other cameras ...
For long travels I take them all.

You need to edit your title because it says may instead of many. I have five cameras 📸. I have three Nikons (F5, F100, EL2), Fujifilm X-T10, and an Impossible Project I-1 Polaroid camera 🎥. While I was in photography school, I have used four different cameras 📸 (F5, EL2, X-T10, I-1). The I-1 was for Polaroids in constant lighting, X-T10 was used one time early in the class than the rest of the time it was with my Nikon F5 and EL2. The F5 was shooting color and the EL2 was shooting black and white with an orange 🍊 filter. Most of my shots came out great 👍 and shooting with film 🎞 was a great learning experience as far as learning how to shoot film at ISO 100, shutter speed 1/125th, depending how light or dark the backdrop paper than it would be either F8 or F11 on color. Due to the Orange filter having two stops of light, than it would from F11 to F5.6 and F8 to F4 to compensate the two stops of light from my Orange filter for my black and white photos.

Hi Daniel! I have two of the same camera. I always rename the basic file name in my camera's settings as DG1 or DG2 so I immediately can tell which image came from which body. For me, the ease of having two bodies with the exact same custom button setups makes the most sense, so I don't have that brain shift of "Oh wait this button does something else bc I'm using the other camera."

The only camera I have which don't need is my old analog Leica R6. I keep it just for nostalgic reasons. My main, every day and portrait camera is an Olympus Pen F. My back up, wildlife and sports camera a Panasonic GX8. My macro system and compact camera is the Olympus TG-6. And for special art projects I own a 5x7 and a 11x14 large format contraption. If I want to take a picture and have no camera on me, I use my Samsung S7. Should I have to select just one camera out of all of them, it would be the Pen F.
