Your smile is always warm and infectious, Laura, but it reached pandemic euphoria when the fitting of your spacesuit was completed!
It is difficult for me to comprehend why this is so powerful. I cried watching get fitted in the space suit. I feel the need to explain to others why it is so moving, but I can't find the words. It is frustrating when I am unable to express why something makes me emotional. I am grateful to be moved by the art, it is exciting and awesome. I am a fan of your's, and Tom's work and principles. Laura thank you for sharing this experience.

Sachs views the Apollo program and his exhibit as a form of sympathetic magic but at different scales, budgets and audience size. He hopes visitors will realize the Apollo program is just a magic trick and to see it in the broader context of media mind control and manipulation. Most of it went over most people's heads, but his exhibit got a few friends of mine who saw it to think hard about wether they've been believing NASA's magic tricks.

Like many others in the comments, I was moved while watching this. The space suit fitting gave me chills. Lot's of times, music gives me chills, so having a physical/emotional response to art is a familiar sensation. I enjoy it every time.

Laura! Oh my gosh! My mind is blown. I am so happy for you! I have been a fan of Tom’s since the early 2000s. I have been a polymathleate my entire life. When I found Tom, I was like, yes! This guy gets it. When I found you on UA-cam I thought the same. When I found out the two of you had a bit of a mutual admiration society I thought, “That makes sense”. But this? WOW! I just watched my favorite artist gird with spacesuit and dub with a Sharpie my favorite maker an Astronaut and Commander! My head is about to explode! I bet Adam Savage will be dancing around his workshop when he finds out too! Congratulations Commander, it could not have happened to a more deserving person. Go Laura! Woo-Hoo!

I just watched this again... and I have to comment again. Your face, Laura - your FACE. That smile. Through this process you were transformed into a little girl, with all of a little girl's innocence, joy, and wonder. And by sharing with us, for nine minutes we ALL became little boys and girls. I love this so much. Everything about it felt like a homage to the Apollo space program - and made me feel a little emotional. I think it was the love, the attention to detail and the ingenuity - and most of all the way it captured the beauty and feeling of it all.
This video made me pause my evening binge for a couple of minutes. It makes me think about me, my current life and my life goals. I feel very connected and very disconnected at the same time. This have to be the effects of sympathetic magic...

Thank you for posting this video. I'd heard about Tom Sachs' space program, but didn't "get" it until you spoke of sympathetic magic. Now I understand. What is art, after all, if not sympathetic magic? The artist imagines the world as it is or as it could be, then through painting, sculpture, photography, literature, drama shares that idea with others. By passing it on, the idea becomes powerful enough to actually shape the "real" world in its image. In 1899, a boy in Massachusetts read H. G. Wells' "War of the Worlds." Twenty-seven years later, the man, Robert H. Goddard, launched the first successful, liquid-fueled rocket. In 1929, Fritz Lang released his film "Frau Im Mond." Forty years later, Werner von Braun watched the rocket he helped to build, a descendant of Goddard's rocket, carry the first humans to walk on another world. The cause-and-effect relationship is clear, and even if it took decades and had the structure of hard science and engineering, we can't deny that art changed the world. That's sympathetic magic at work. I see the same thing in Tom Sachs' space program. He understands that everything we normally see as cold science or technology is really an expression of human passion. It doesn't matter that the pressure suits are Tyvek paint coveralls and the spacecraft are built of things that other people have thrown away. It's real to the audience, just as real as a science fiction novel or motion picture that started us on the road to space. Who knows what may come of this?
So cool! I love the space program and homage it pays to Apollo. I have to say though, it's incredibly weird for me to hear Sachs talk about sympathetic magic. It kind of sours this for me a bit. It turns this tribute to one of the greatest technological ebdeavours of humankind into a strange sort of cargo cult, which feels like a weird impedance mismatch or something. Still an awesome project though, I'm stoked you're part of it! I have a friend who works on it too, so cool
Nah, it just means that Laura was the perfect choice in his mind because the synergy they shared made him see her similar to those intrepid men and women that become astronauts.
She certainly has that flair.
I fail to see the difference between this and what Hollywood does. I too had a problem with the voodoo explanation as a follower of Jesus Christ.
