Traxxas TRX4M Portal Axle Kit - Are They Worth It?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 жов 2024
- In this video I unbox, install, and review the new Traxxas portal axles for the TRX4M. These are complete axles, ready to bolt on, and will net you 10mm of additional ground clearance plus go a long way towards reducing torque twist. Priced at $130, they are more expensive than many existing portal axles on the market currently. But are the genuine Traxxas axles worth it? Watch to find out!

Thank you for being brutally honest. This price is ridiculous!
What a joke of a company. The price tag of these is just ridiculous, huge disrespect to their customer base.
Good , honest opinion. Injora started cranking out upgrades for these things almost 2 years ago when they first came out. Traxxas didn’t offer most of the upgrades until later on, and if they did the price was outrageous. I ended up building a couple trx4m with aftermarket, mostly Injora and Meus because the quality was there, and the price was significantly better.
Considering that an ascent 18 comes with portal axles and metal gears for less than the price of these portals, I'm guessing it's probably better to just get one of those
The redcat ascent is killer..smokes even my modded trx4m. One of the best rtr and cheap too unreal value
@@Marksworld...1 I've been torn between getting an ascent 18, cr18p Rushmore, or a katana.
When you can get metal portals with bearings ect for less money it’s no comparison
Yeah and I feel like they have to be metal or it will be super top heavy on the high trail models
Glad you didn’t fan boy out like other RC tubers ….
I agree. Price is definitely too high. I definitely can get better axles elsewhere. But thanks for doing the review.
$130!!!!!!!!!!!! For a $250 truck, that’s insane. Imagine Traxxas selling a $500 part for a $1000 car. Insane
Well here in the U.S. the truck runs for $175 I have the Chevy k10 and the Ford F-150 High Trails. I got them one at a time no rush. But yes the Portal Axles are cool, if you really want them. I want to put these on my TRX4M Ford Bronco or Land Rover Defender since I have all 4 TRX4M's. I could just buy one set and test it to see the difference. But I would love to put these on the Bronco or Defender more than the high Trails. With bigger tires 62 or 63,64mm.
Wait you’re totally right. I forgot the truck was $149 not $249 lmao. It’s been a while since I bought my trx4m. That makes this even worse
Do you have a link for the electric screwdriver you were using?
Where are you from? The base trx4 is $160. And the MT is $200. And honestly I don’t think the Xmaxx batteries are far off. Definitely 400+
@@hdsport06 that's an injora electric screwdriver.
Traxxas playing catch-up to FMS and failing 😂
I agree with your analysis! 100% to many options out there already...
Thanks Cape! Honesty is king!
Traxxas is soo outta touch it's down right disrespectful to the community
Agree
Yeah, plastic, bushings, composite gears...for 100+ one would expect bearings and metal gears at least
I think they're way overpriced for what they are. I mean, come on, plastic gears, housing and no bearings!! I agree with you, there are much better options for the money.
its cool to have portals from traxxas, but that price is crazy. You can get a whole ascent 18 for that price or a set of metal axles.
Always appreciate the honesty!!!
For that price I’d just get the Injora metal axle housing, some metal gears and bearings, and Meus portal conversion kit. Traxxas upgrades are way too expensive lol
These are the same price as a full-metal set of Treal portal axles, which are VERY nicely built and durable. Heck, the Meus portals are also full metal and run about $80. I can't recommend the Injora diamond portals (also $80), since they seem to be suffering from a manufacturing defect that causes the dogbone shaft to snap off very easily. I'm currently waiting on a replacement part from Injora to see if they've resolved the problem, but my hopes aren't high after seeing other reviews.
So I can give traxxas $130 for this, or meus racing $50 for aluminum ones that reuse the stock axles.
139 dollars is crazy seeing as I can get a brand new trx4m for 150 or a high trail for 160
1. I am not surprised at what Traxxas is charging for them
2. I am surprised that Traxxas missed the opportunity to sell the optiional gears separately rather than including them like they did.
3. Why would you ever buy these with the composite center diff, no bearings, and lack of aluminum or brass for the axel housing, diff cover and inner/outer portal axels.
This is just overboard, even for Traxxas. Price is nuts with metal gears. They just won’t stop doing this until we stop buying. It’s insulting really, right to our face. It’s just wrong in many ways. Great vid. You would be good at politics haha.
Great review, these are decent plastic portals, but they are way way too expensive.
I didn't realize that the portal boxes have three gears. I assumed the extra gear that came with the transmission somehow reversed the rotation but I see that happens at the portal. I maybe would have kept the portals as a standard two gear and then include an extra little add-on connector of some kind that flips the motor wires around before it goes into the ECM. That way it is kept easy with no soldering and can be reverted if necessary.
The Portals Axles are not that bad looking on the high trails trucks. A bigger tire set will look nice to fill the gap a bit on stock shocks. Nice video Adam thanks for sharing. 👍🏻👍🏻
They are really cool, but I agree, I'd never buy them for that price
Traxxas should have come out with a portal upgrade pack that has all the parts to be added to the stock axles they already have. Price would have been easier to swallow.
130 for a lite plastic 😂😂
Thinkin about pickin up a mini crawler to play with. Wondering if i grab a trx4m, what to start with for wheel and tire combo
In sheer materials cost, portals wouldn’t be much more expensive than a normal axle. Stock axles on the Traxxas site cost $60 for 2, and a gear set costs $5. This means a stock TRX4M without axles would cost $95. By this logic, if Traxxas were to release a TRX4M with portal axles being the only difference, it would cost $225. That’s just absurd. As Adam mentioned, almost every aftermarket company makes much better axles made of much better materials, and guess what, for much cheaper. The only company I can think of who doesn’t follow this trend is Treal, their axles cost $150 for both axles with everything included l, but taking a look at them I think buying Treal over Traxxas was the most justified purchase I have ever made. It’s worth noting that Treal discontinued their axle kits, but you can still buy all the parts necessary (housings, portal boxes, gears, etc.) to match the kit for around the same price.
I would like to see you use them on something more LCG oriented.
I can try them on black Betty or the tarantula
Decent vehicles but I’ll stick with third party for aftermarket. Traxxas obviously doesn’t pay attention to market sales.
Try the ones from injora
I know it's a lot to ask, but can you put them on a Defender ? I'm was thinking since a loong time on a Defender build but I just can't imagine how it will look.
As clear as water. Thats not the way Traxxas…
what is that sweet electric screwdriver??
No bearings and plastic gears for almost the price of a whole truck… no way! 25$ a axle would be more appropriate I know it didn’t cost more than 4$ in materials to make that
I’ll stick with my injora all metal portal axles that were $85. I’ll buy traxxas models but not so much their upgrades. That’s downright disrespectful to the community to charge so much for something like that
i hate how everyone adds width to rc trucks, the scrub radius gets so out of control
That thing is fugly, but now you can stamp some 1.5 inch wheels.
Definitely need to fill those wheel wells!
Spot on!
That's way too much money for plastic.. you can get metal ones for half that price.
How do they accomplish not reversing the motor rotation?
And this is what they’ll keep doing. This is how companies get rich they’re not looking out for us. They’re looking out for their bottom line I mean really $20 less than what the actual truck cost come on now you guys keep buying the stuff and we’re gonna keep paying more and more, don’t buy it
I have never had a RC with portal axles..........
I get torque twist with my Meus portal axles, wonder if you get the same with these axles? 🤔🤨
These do a really good job mitigating torque twist
Is there any difference in steering angle or turning radius between the portals and the stock axles?
I don’t believe so. I think the portals are equal, possibly less steering angle. But I can check
Torque Twist? Isn't it same as Torque Steer?
No.
Torque steer is what’s you get in a FWD car that doesn’t have a good diff.
Torque twist manifests itself in chassis lean, not so much in the steering or direction of the truck
Nah $129 for $69 axles I would pass
40 dollar axles at best
Way too much $$$. Traxxas should just release a PRO TRX4M that includes the 2speed and Portals. And include ball bearings this time 🙄
I like that idea!
Time for 1.55s 😄
better watch out traxxes fina put a hit on you lol
Haha I’ll be ready 😂
Way too expensive
Who is buying this stuff?
This is why I have never , and will never support Traxxas!
With plastic gears and bushings I'm out! Too much for nothing.
$130 🤣🤣🤣
Pricy but probably worth it thanks for the video
LOL! Not even a nice try TRAXXAS
I disagree. Nice try, but the price point is ridiculous! Even at half the cost they are asking would be too much.
Absolute garbage from traxxas
Man people in the comments are raging. At a higher speed youl need better parts but the original parts won't break if you just drive it right.
If you want to bash a trx4 you will Break it.
You don't have to upgrade anything if you don't hold the eccellerator for a hour. And hit alot of bumps.
Redcat is the same and the parts for redcat are cheaper.
Traxxax is more available
What they said was i actually wanted a losi.
Get a traxxas.
