Art Supplies Haul & Swatching! ✶ The one in which I'm traumatised by a pencil sharpener...

  • Update on the pencil sharpener: I've emailed Jackson's Art and I'm now waiting for a response. I asked Dominic to try using the sharpener too, and he had the same issue. It hacks and tears every pencil to shreds rather than sharpening it. We watched a UA-cam video on the sharpener, and it turns out that we were actually using it correctly, so my guess is that I have a faulty one.
    This is a mega long video! It's full of gorgeous art supplies but I don't mind if you want to skip through it a bit or put it on in the background while you work etc. I didn't mean for it to be this long and I'll probably never upload a video to UA-cam that's this long ever again (don't even ask how long it took on our awful internet connection!). ;) My favourite part is the swatching and testing of the art materials. This starts at around 13:30 if you're more interested in that part, although I do show and tell you quite a bit about the art materials beforehand, and go through the prices etc. Included in this art haul are: Holbein Acryla Gouache paints, Caran d'Ache Luminance pencils, Neocolor 1 crayons, KUM Masterpiece pencil sharpener (*cough*), Faber-Castell Pitt Artist brush pens, Posca paint pens, Royal Talens Art Creation sketchbooks, and various papers. I hope you enjoy it!

      Try turning the sharpener instead of the pencil.

      Just intrigued, did you also try tweaking the little screws?
      I have a decades old sharpener from Germany and i need to tighten the screw every now and then.
      And of course replace the blade when necessary.

    I didn't see how long it was before clicking on it and was surprised 50 minutes had passed when I got to the end. Never thought I'd enjoy spending nearly an hour watching someone scribble on paper ;) In all seriousness, I appreciate reviews like this. Art materials are expensive and it really helps to see them in action before spending a load of money on something that might be disappointing. Definitely going to check out the sketch books, they're such a good price!

      Ha ha, that's good to hear because when it ended up at 50 minutes long I was like, "Is anybody going to even watch all of this?!". Really good to hear that you enjoyed it and that it's been helpful. I'll definitely be making more of these videos in the future.

    Absolutely a joy to watch. I love the black papers. Be interesting to see how the neocolor ll water soluble wax pastels work on them. They are my current fav medium. Great video. Thanks Natasha 😊👍

    Hi Natasha! I made it to the end. As always, I had a lovely time with you Swatching! I love to watch when you swatch. It's so relaxing and soothing. One of these days I'll draw while you swatch, but actually I like to watch you paint too so I'd better not!! Lol! I'm going to buy certain supplies instead of sets, that way I'll use what I have instead of letting supplies sit and go to waste. Anyway, sets are expensive!! I wish I wasn't so poor...It makes things hard, you know? I'd love to sell my art but I can't go anywhere and I have no one to do it for me. Anyway Natasha it's been a pleasure as usual. Take care!!

    Loved this video Natasha, I have had those Faber castell grey selection of pens in my art supplies for years and have never opened the packet, seeing you swatching them has made me want to use mine. I was impressed that you managed to get some Holbein arcyla gouache from Jacksons, every time I go on there they seem to be sold out :-(

    • @NatashaNewtonArt
      @NatashaNewtonArt  3 роки тому

      Ooh yes, you should use them! I used them in a landscape drawing in my sketchbook today, just to add some lines. Looking forward to experimenting more with them though! I have loads of problems with the Holbein Acryla Gouache being out of stock at Jackson's too! I don't think I've ever gone to their site and been able to buy a) all the Luminance pencils I've wanted in one go, or b) all the Acryla gouache I've needed. I have to keep checking back regularly, and when they have some back in stock, I pounce! This is why I place so many orders, because it's impossible to get everything I want in one go.

    That is so strange, I am using KUM (not this one but a wood-encased one but it looks fairly similar to this) and I have never had any issues, in fact it worked on all of my pencils incl. pastel ones! i hope your issues will be solved soon.

      Thank you! Yes, they're generally very good sharpeners - I love my heavy brass KUM sharpener. It works perfectly every time! I uploaded a video today showing the faulty one in action - Jackson's Art Supplies asked me to do so, so that they could see what the problem is.

    I call the Pitt set of grey shades “shadows in a box” and use them for that. Have you used these much, since? If so and if you’re ever doing an art tour I’d love to see how you use them. (If not that’s fine too, of course.)

    • @NatashaNewtonArt
      @NatashaNewtonArt  2 роки тому +1

      That's a great name for them! I use the Pitt pens quite a bit - I often use them as the base layer for my mixed media drawings.

    When I use a hand sharpener, I try to twist the sharpener and not the pencil- it reduces the amount of torque applied to the pencil and prevents breakages. But my favorite sharpener is the Mitsubishi Uni KH-20. Well worth the money!!

    Are the FC Pitt brushpens water solvable? Or do they stay put after drying even if you combine them with a water medium?

    • @NatashaNewtonArt
      @NatashaNewtonArt  2 роки тому

      I never use them with water, I always use them as my base layer and then work over the top in coloured pencil, pen, or Neocolor! But that's a good question.

    Interesting that your Kum pencil sharpener didn’t work, did you find out anything about it since? I have another Kum sharpener, the one with the blue cap. And it doesn’t work for coloured pencils at all, and not even all graphite pencils. :(

    • @NatashaNewtonArt
      @NatashaNewtonArt  3 роки тому +1

      It seemed to be faulty - however I tried to use it and however many pencils I tried to sharpen, it did the same thing to all of them! Coloured pencils and graphite. Jackson's gave me a refund in the end, and I haven't attempted to use it since then. I value my pencils too much! ;)
