  • This is a review of the Kum Masterpiece ( amzn.to/2PDSHkU ), a high end pencil sharpener designer to deliver a super long point. It's an expensive sharpener and an alternative to the very popular Kum Long Point ( amzn.to/3stLbrB ).

Dang this is EXACTLY what I've been looking for. Well, just hole #1. I like to use colored pencils unpointed, with just the wood stripped down. Thanks for showing me this.

Pretty cool sharpener! I’ve never seen one like this. Love that you can just sharpen the tip. Also, I love the way you say “because”. It melts my heart a little bit. As always, great review!!

I’ve had good and not so good luck with two-stage sharpeners. Everything from perfect tips to wood demolishing nightmares. Thanks for the review.

I mostly use lead holders in combination with h2 lead these days instead of actual pencils. I find myself using my pocket knife to resharpen the lead more often than not, since the angle can be whatever I want, and I can get it far sharper then with most sharpeners. Doesn’t take long either. Either that or Im using sandpaper to sharpen the lead, but one must be careful to not break the tip right off again.

Obviously, this is for traditional pencil enthusiasts who use their pencil in a particular way.
I'm not in that target audience, I've given up on traditional pencils long ago when I was a kid and discovered mechanical pencils.
I only keep what little remaining pencils I have as "Give Away" or "Loaner" pencils to others who need something to write with that is Pencil in nature over pen.
I love those "Ikea Tiny Pencils" as give away pencils, I wish Ikea would still produce them, but alas, they gave up on them.

I have found a new interest in pens and was searching for pens to buy online. I stumbled across your video of the kakuno vs the metropolitan fountain pens and have started binge watching a couple of your videos. I can see that you are quite passionate and very knowledgeable about the topics you cover within your videos, that is something very special. I really appreciate the videos you make because they provide quality information. Thank You so much for all you do. Keep up the great work!

I also like the Apsara long point sharpeners. They come in bulk but I think they do a good job.

If you haven't already, please get yourself the Blackwing One Step Long. Great design, great weight, and sharpens beautifully. The shavings are encased, so there's no mess. The shavings are simple to discard, so there's no fuss. It's completely made of metal, so it'll last for years if not forever. Its circular design allows you to grasp it comfortably. It sharpens to an excellent point. I highly recommend it! Thanks for the video!

Ali, I use very simple sharpeners made by Nataraj, does the job well. Price is around INR 5 for well made ones. I think they have some higher end models , but not more than a dollar of price. I have been using one which lasted for almost 3 years now and still going strong. 😁

I'm sure your sharpeners works well. The Blackwing One-Step Long Point's unique pencil design and metal construction won me over.

I've always disliked when hand-held sharpeners shred the wood away from the lead and you don't have a nice clean transition from wood to lead. Visually, I could not bear the appearance of this point and would have to either try a different brand pencil or put this sharpener away. I know this depends a lot on the type and quality of the wood used for the case and how well the lead is bonded to the wood. EPCON and WOPEX pencils really shine in this regard but that is only one of very few favorable qualities of those pencils.

Yeah, perhaps a cedar pencils wasn't the best match for this. The point wasn't aesthetically appealing at all.

The reason that this sharpener, exposes the lead of the pencil so much, is because it's a sharpener for sketch and drawing with pencils. It's a great sharpener, because it can do, what we traditionaly do with razors (which takes way longer time and also, you always risk to break the tip and start allover again) For those 2 last reasons only, it makes the best sharpener out there, for sketching, drawing etc. There is a reason, that it costs that much, and I hope I could explain the reasons.

Does the KUM AUTOMATIC LONG POINT (multiple slots) have all the housing made of plastic? Or does it have any part made of metal apart from the blades?
Which one sharpens a longer tip: the all-magnesium KUM MASTERPIECE (double slot) or the all-magnesium KUM LONG POINT 400-5L (single slot)?
And compared to the all brass M+R CASTOR (single slot)?

    • @unsharpen
      @unsharpen  3 роки тому

Long point is all plastic except the blade. Masterpiece sharpens longer

I'd like someone to list, from longer to shorter points, these three:
      - KUM MASTERPIECE
      - KUM LONG POINT 400-5L
      - M+R CASTOR
