  • Welcome to another Sketchbook Time, a series of videos where I work in my sketchbooks! Sometimes I'm drawing or painting something specific, sometimes I'm swatching different colours/palettes, and sometimes I'm just having fun! You can choose to create along with me, working on your own projects as I chat to you in the background, or just lose yourself in these relaxing videos and enjoy the satisfaction of watching a page or two of a sketchbook being filled. I hope that they inspire you to get your own sketchbook out and allow yourself the time to play and experiment too!
    This time I've used washi tape to divide the page into panels for my astronomy paintings. I'll be painting moons and stars in two different ways, and at the end we'll see whether the tip I've been given for removing the tape actually works!

    To save your acrylic paint, try covering your pallet in a ziplock bag and placing it in the freezer. When you are ready to paint again, simply let it defrost (which takes only a few minutes) and the paint should be perfectly good.
    I learned this trick while in art school and I have used it for many, many years 😍

    I love the idea of painting the moon and stars! I sometimes lack the imagination to create art in my sketchbook! I enjoy watching you swatch different art materials and what can be created with them. You can't grow without trying new supplies! ✨️

    When I use masking tape in my sketchbooks, I usually try to reduce the tackiness a little bit by laying the tape on my clothes, usually the legs of my trousers, before I put it down on the paper. The fibres from my clothes reduce the tack just enough so I can easily get it off, but it still does not bleed. Hope this makes sense. I generally just use usual painters masking tape.

    Painting the night sky is one of my most favourite things to do, I used to fill up whole journals with celestial illustrations, they are forgiving and somehow cooperate most of the times if that makes any sense 🌷🦋🍀🍀✨💛🌈

    My first watercolor kit was the cotman tube set of twelve colors. Its was about the price of one large tube of professional paint. I found the paint not much different to the higher grade paint and because it was a small color selection with all the basic colors it really taught me how to color match. Was a great set to learn on. I have since moved on to more lightfast pigments but I still have my first set and will drag it out every now and again to play with. You can still get replacement tubes for it as well which is lovely. Thank you Natasha I enjoyed our sketchbook time together, its great to see your painting process and gives me an excuse to sit down and relax for a few moments. :)

      Thanks Lesley! The following made me laugh so I thought I'd tell you: When I go to answer comments, UA-cam makes auto-suggestions for quick comments I can click on to answer (I never use it, although it is a source of some amusement). It suggested this to me to answer your comment: "You can do it!". 😂 So there; I've passed on UA-cam's message to you. 😂

    Same here on the “artist tape” pulling up my paper *sometimes *and bleeding underneath. I have loads of washi tape, I may try that, although since the adhesion of some of it is just “so so,” I’ll just be crossing my fingers. Thanks! p.s. here in the states, Daler Rowney paint products are usually mostly student grade.

    It is goods to just have a day or even weekend working in a sketchbook and seeing what happens. I discovered recently you can actualy by sketchbooks that have different types of papers in them,not a mixed media sketchbook but actually different papers. I have one that was a gift from a friend that is a mix of watercolour papers and cartridge papers and handmade papers,black papers and grey and tan papers all in one sketchbook.It means you can use different mediums.I love the simplicity of these two night sky pieces,they have a serenity to them.I like the idea of a sketchbook of this mixed paper type.I did think of getting lots of different papers from "Choosing Keeping" and having a go at making my own sketchbook.I wonder what these two paintings would look like if you did a version with the tinted black gansai tambi paints you have...

    • @NatashaNewtonArt
      @NatashaNewtonArt  3 роки тому

      Totally agree! It's so important to make the time just to play and experiment. I love the sound of that sketchbook! I think that something like that would be my ideal sketchbook as I love to work in different media. I opened a package from Choosing Keeping yesterday (I spent some Christmas money I was given). I only ordered 4 items (and one was a card!), but I bought one of their pads of grey paper with one deckled edge. It's gorgeous! I filmed the unboxing and it will be part of a larger art haul video. I might experiment with the gansai paints on that paper...hmmmm...

    Hi Natasha! Wow you are brave to put that much watercolor on the art creations sketchbook, but the result is beautiful as always! I just wanted to recommend the Etchr sketchbooks (I think they even have free international shipping.) They're pricy but you can use ANY medium on them with minimal buckling and they can take a fair amount of abuse too. I'm not sponsored or anything like that, I just love their products. I use mine for "closer to finished" pieces like this, and my other less expensive sketchbooks for swatches and doodles.

    • @NatashaNewtonArt
      @NatashaNewtonArt  3 роки тому

      Thanks so much, Sarah! I've heard about the Etchr sketchbooks; someone else I follow on UA-cam uses them and I also saw them on the Jackson's Art website just the other day when I was looking for a watercolour sketchbook. I was tempted, but went with the Seawhite one in the end because it was less expensive. But it's great to know that you would recommend them, and I'm now very tempted to buy one at some point and give it a go!

    You can actually get low tack artist's masking tape,which I discovered recently that really works in my sketchbooks. I do use washi tape sometimes too. But the lw tack masking tape is a good option too.

    Thank you for sharing! It’s always a pleasure to see you work. I really want to start trying gouache, but I was wondering how it works with colored pencil. Like maybe using gouache to create an under painting and then adding detail with colored pencil on top. I was wondering if perhaps have you ever tried this. 😅

    • @NatashaNewtonArt
      @NatashaNewtonArt  3 роки тому +2

      Hi Francisco! Thank you. :) I haven't had much luck with applying pencil over the top of the Holbein Acryla Gouache that I usually paint with, but it's quite different to normal gouache (or it could be the pencils I'm using - I have yet to try it with the Derwent Drawing Pencils and I think that they might layer over it more successfully). I'm only now starting to experiment with mixed media, so I will have a go with my regular gouache (Winsor & Newton Designer's Gouache and similar) and report back!

    In your opinion, how did the gouache paint work over the watercolor sky base? Did you find it easy to manipulate while painting the moon?

    • @NatashaNewtonArt
      @NatashaNewtonArt  3 роки тому

      This particular gouache (Holbein Acryla) seems to work really well over watercolour - no problems at all!

    • @NatashaNewtonArt
      @NatashaNewtonArt  3 роки тому

      Thanks Giuseppina! The tape I used here is MT masking tape (it's a type of washi tape). I bought mine from Choosing Keeping but many places sell it. I used it yesterday on watercolour paper and it came off perfectly again after heating it up with the hairdryer, so I'm very impressed with it!

    I'm not sure whether the topic has already been addressed, but I would love to know what you have to say about mental health and arts. During the first lockdown, I started to paint to calm my mind. I'm wondering if painting/drawing has any therapeutical effects on you?

    • @NatashaNewtonArt
      @NatashaNewtonArt  3 роки тому +2

      It's so strange that you've mentioned this Valérie, because just before you posted this comment, I had written about this exact subject yesterday in the latest post on my Instagram account! I find that art is hugely beneficial for me mentally. It calms me, and gives a positive focus during difficult times. It's so important to my mental health. It's interesting to hear that it has the same effect on you too. x

    Have u tried washi tapes? They come off the paper easier then masking tape,I have duct washi tape that I got from hobby lobby and I really liked how sticky it is I havent tried taking it off paper so im not sure about that but.

    • @NatashaNewtonArt
      @NatashaNewtonArt  3 роки тому

      I have! So far, I've found that the one I used here works the best - it doesn't rip the paper but it still sticky enough to prevent the paint from going underneath.
