- In this episode, we'll go hunting mule deer up on the ranch with a great old 1895 Winchester Deluxe rifle. Join us as we sneak up on a mulie buck and try to get within shooting range with open sights.
Proves those old guns can still put meat on the table...good show!
That had to be a thrill to the senses. It is natural for man to hunt. You did it Teddy Roosevelt style. Definitely a good eater.
seeing somebody using one of my favorite guns to hunt is definitely one of my happiest moments on UA-cam
Nice shooting, beautiful country. I have always said, the trophy is what’s on the table, and that buck will be a mighty fine tasting trophy.
Real hunting! No optics, no black plastic rifle. Well done! From South Africa.
I love watching this hunt. It is nice to see you shooting the cowboy way.
Fantastic, great to see it done old school. I have only hunted bird but I really enjoyed this. Thank you. Im surprised you didn't get any negative comments. We don't need them
I expected some negative comments as well. Pleasantly surprised.
I love it! Congratulations on your harvest old school style!
Killed the biggest buck of my life with an 1886 Winchester chambered in 45-90. It literally flattened the buck at about 90 yards. You have to get close with those old long guns but it made me a better hunter. I would encourage anyone to try it.
That's real deer hunting. I personally don't think hunting over a feeder is very sportsmanlike.Your video reminds me of my hunts in Kansas and Wyoming when I was younger. You walked and stalked and shot your deer and if you coudn't get the truck in there, you would drag the deer out to the truck. Sometimes you thought you would never get there. Thanks Mark!
Had that 1895 rifle in 30-40 myself and mine shot really well. Trouble is I sold it off this summer as well as a few Savage 99 rifles because they've increased in price and I needed to do some vehicle repairs. I miss it but I'm glad it paid for my repairs. A person has to just make due. I will still hunt with my old 94' 30-30 and old 348 winchester leverguns that I still have
I regret selling just about every gun I've ever sold, but sometimes it's unavoidable. Glad to hear you still have some good old Winchesters to hunt with.
What a rifle and what a country. Wish I could bring my .30 WCF SRC and we could get some meat.
Thanks John!
Cool.....fun to watch! That is a long poke for a lever gun. I have missed shooting that distance with my bolt 270 with scope. LOL
Thanks for showing the hunt!
Bryson
Thanks Bryson! It would have been much better if he'd dropped on the first shot. If I was better at editing video, he would have. 😆
You just can"t beat old school. That is how I was taught to hunt. Never had more than rifle, binos and lunch. Great video.
190 yards off hand open sights 120 yr old rifle, very impressive! Make the meat taste all the better.
When I butcher a beef, I like to use my great grand Father's 30 WCF on them. It was built near 1910.
Very cool! I'm sure that would make your grandfather happy.
Congratulations! Opening morning harvest by 8:30 is great. My grandfather used to hunt mule deer with a 30-40 Krag. We hunted the same way you do. Get out and find them. Nice shooting and tracking.
Thanks Tex! I really enjoy hunting with the old school tactics and firearms.
That was great and reminded me of my Muley hunts in Wyoming. 😊
Don't sell yourself short that was really good shooting with open sights and a 30/40 Krag. I really enjoy your channel especially since I live in Oregon unfortunately in the upper Willamette Valley.
Awesome hunt with a stunning rifle. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks James!
Real hunting for a change! And with my favorite old cartridge. Mine is an 1898 Krag Jorgensen carbine. It is capable of MOA accuracy when I am,and when equipped with the Redfield peep sight. You have inspired me to take it Bear and Deer hunting this year. What bullets are you using? The couple of deer I got with this rifle was with 220 grain Silvertips.I don't think they expanded at all! I really appreciate you showing a real HUNTING video with limited technology. Today's new hunters think that sitting in a box, maybe even with a feeder, is hunting. It's a shame!
I've come to really enjoy hunting with traditional techniques and firearms. I was using 180 Core Lokt bullets.
@@thecinnabar8442 The 30/40 and 180grain Core Lokt have put truck loads of deer and elk on the ground. A very good combination
Awesome shooting mark! I heard that last round hit it’s mark. I felt like I was there and I wish I was. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Yea, no mistaking that sound! 😉
I love your videos. I also collect Winchesters (or at least try to). I grew up in Mt.Vernon, not far from you. I’d love to come see some of your rifles for sale someday. Thanks for showing off the best part of our state.
Thanks. We'll be looking forward to your visit.
Great shooting, A nice vintage rifle as well.
felt i was there with you! just bought an 1895 in .405
I can't help but find a magical aspect to such things. Can't help but think of my ancestors that hunted the wild country over 100 years ago.
That's one of the reasons I like to hunt with the older rifles.
That was some damn fine shooting , you maybe getting older but you still got it that's for sure .
Thanks. Even us "Old Timers" get lucky once in a while.😉
Nice shooting love people that arn t scared to shoot open sights easy to track with the sparse vegetation my best open sight shot was 180 yrd s on a calf moose and 170 on a spike horn deer with my 307 Winchester 94 great hunting video thanks
Awsome rifle an that is an awsome buck nicely done 👌
Thanks Dave!
Beautiful country
Thanks Kevin! Enjoyed talking to you today. Good luck with that 1894 stock.
Great shooting. Nice buck.
Thanks Doug!
That was so classic! I had the same luck with an old Savage Model 99, open sights, 2 years ago in Wisconsin. I just purchased my plane tickets for this years hunt there. Now to figure out what old classic rifle i want to take with me. Maybe my 100 plus year old Marlin 1893. My brother and our childhood friends all get together for opening day about every year. I really just like getting together and can care less about getting a deer...LOL. Congratulations.
Sounds like a great time! Best of luck with your hunt. I like the 1893 Marlins. Which caliber is yours?
@@thecinnabar8442 Thanks! It's a short rifle with an octagonal barrel in 30-30.
Congratulations on a successful hunt and an excellent shot with an open sighted levergun. No doubt that buck will make fine eating. Thanks for allowing us to come along.
You're very welcome, Larry!
Great job!👍🏽😀❤️🇺🇸
Thanks Jeffry!
Great hunt and wonderful country congratulations
Thanks Ken! Glad you liked it!
Nice shooting, nice rifle... 👍👏😻
Thank you!
What an excellent hunt! Gosh I’d love to get out there and join you on a hunt like that. Nice calm morning and some good deer meat to boot. 🤠
An enjoyable hunt for sure! Thanks for watching Shotgunner
Putting meat in the freezer! Nice job and a good looking buck.
Well done. I love Eastern OR hunting.
Good shooting Mark, heard that familiar (plok) on the 3rd shot.
Great way to spend the day God has given us. Thanks for taking me along.
You're very welcome Jeff!
Thank you for taking me along on your hunt! I had to give up hunting a number a years ago so I enjoyed your video. Thanks again!
You're very welcome! I hope it brought back some good memories.
Awesome video, Love seeing Classic Rifles put to use at what they were intended for, Thanks for taking us along
I’m 59 years old and I’m still hunting with open sights. Great hunt
That's great! I have lots of respect for those who hunt with traditional methods and firearms. At 57, my eyesight has gotten to the point that I only use receiver sights like the Lyman 21 on this gun or tang peeps for hunting. Especially if I think I'll be taking longer shots.
@@thecinnabar8442 in South Texas it’s rare for me to take a shot at over 60-70 yards. Most are closer.
Congratulations on making meat with an outstanding rifle! Thanks for taking me with you!
You're very welcome Joe!
Outstanding! And I killed my Good Meat Buck, last fall, opening morning, and at 8:30am also. On foot, Mod 64 30-30 and iron sights. No, Doesn't Get Any Better! Thanks for this!
Good shooting Mark!!! Thanks for taking us along on the hunt.
You're very welcome, Steve!
That right there my friend....
Is what it is all about.
Thank you for letting all of us tag along.
Good shooting and good eating
You're very welcome Rodney! Glad you like it
Great hunt and a beautiful rifle! Thanks for taking us along.
You're very welcome Alan!
Very good video. There is something special about taking deer with a vintage rifle. I watch your channel a lot, you do good sound gunsmithing. I have been a gun smith for 38 years, still learn stuff.
Nice ol’ flatside. My 1895’s have never failed me! Enjoyed the video!
Thanks Robert! Glad you liked it.
Boy that was one heck of a shot. Brought back memories of knowing he's there somewhere and you'll get him. Got all day and a nice trail. That was great. Thanks so much for that. I'm here in Wisconsin and we have deer but wow that open country with the Krag? Got an old 30-40 in my hands right now and still in awe of that shot. Fantastic sir.
Nice job sir
I'm sure glad I found your channel. Those old rifles and that country! Almost an alternate universe.
Living here is almost like stepping back in time to a simpler era. We're very blessed.
Absolutely beautiful country. You are blessed!
Thanks Joe! We definitely are blessed. Thanks for watching!
That country and the old school method are how I hunt. No vehicles either, game cart to get it out.
You tend to think about how it'll be a tough slug to get it out but only for a split second! 🤣
It certainly takes more skill and is more satisfying to me to hunt the old school way. Even when I'm not hunting, I enjoy hiking or riding across the ranch and keeping an eye on things. Thanks for watching and commenting!
@@thecinnabar8442 Absolutely! I like old school hunting because you can hear what's going on around you. I also feel more connected to nature and a part of the food chain, not just a visitor.
That was great! Your ranch is absolutely beautiful!!. Love the old Winchester's!
Thanks very much!
I could hear that thop! On the final shot.
Great stuff mate 👍
Thanks Dean! Glad you liked it.
Thanks for the video Cinnabar. Good shooting & Beautiful Rifle! 👍
Thanks Jeff!
Just beautiful country and a wonderful rifle to carry. Great shooting with this tremendous classic long shot with open sights.
Thanks SGT! It was a very enjoyable hunt and I was happy to share it.
I really enjoyed your video. I am so tired of all of these long range videos with these guys with their so called super long range rifles and scopes. It is just nice to see a real hunting video. Hunting like a real man, a cowboy 👍
Thanks James!
Venison is where it is at.
Tenderloin, backstrap, ribs and make that flank into fajitas.
Nice hunt and really beautiful country thanks for sharing.
Congratulations on a great hunt. Nice rifle.
Well, I'll be darn! Hahaha. That was just great! Way cool for sure.
Just blessed!
So the shot ended up being just shy of 200 yrds???
Thank you for sharing this!
Your video work will get better.
Thanks J.R.!
Congratulations on the buck Mark. Nice job getting him with the nice old 1895!
Thanks Brad! It was a very enjoyable hunt
Nice rifle and shot out to 190 yds with open sights i got my first win lever action last year i bought it from the orignal owner who is 92 and bought it brand new in 58.He figured there was 150 rds thru it i couldn't believe none of his grand kids or sons wanted it so i bought it. Anyway its a pre 64 mod 94 3030 i got a couple of scoped guns who don't get used during deer season cause i like this rifle so much. You got alot of great vids on Winchesters i've learned a fair bit from them keep up the good work...
Thanks a bunch! Good luck hunting with that old 94. It's very satisfying to hunt with these old lever guns.
Great video!
Thanks Paul!
This was a great video, I’m glad to see you got him with irons sights. I myself exclusively use older guns with open sights and it makes for a great time.
Thank you very much! Glad to hear there are others out there hunting with traditional methods.
Thanks for sharing your hunt Mark. Can’t imagine how challenging it was to both hunt and film at the same time. You certainly answered my question about the viability of the 30-40 Krag as an affective hunting round. Nice shooting too! Enjoy that venison and all the eating opportunities it gives you. Until next time. Happy Trails indeed!
Thanks so much, Dogbone! Happy Trails!!
Great shooting.
Excellent hunt and video, thanks for sharing.
You're very welcome! Thanks for watching
Good job. Im gonna use my new production 1886 winchester 45-70 this year in Iowa
Thanks Richard and good luck with your hunt. Sounds like a great choice of rifle and caliber.
Way To Go Mark That Was a Heck of a Shot With Open Sights 😮😀👍🏼 That 120ish Year Old Winchester Still Can Shoot Accurately That’s a Testimony To The 1895 Winchester Design For Sure 😀 Venison Jerky Is One of My Favorite Snacks When Out On a Hunt
Thanks Chris! We love the venison jerky as well. We also grind up a little bacon fat with our venison and make a great venison burger.
Wow, that is a beauty! I've never seen a 95 with pistol grips in deluxe flat sides. That's a keeper for sure!
Thanks, Mel!
Absolutely Beautiful country! Even if it wasn't a successful hunt your rewarded with just being in that area. Congrats!
Great video, fantastic shot.
Thanks a bunch! It was a very enjoyable hunt.
I applaud you sir. Hunting in wide open country like that with open sights. I can tell your priority is the hunting part, not necessarily the killing part. Just being there is the best part of hunting. Great video sir, as usual. PS, great shooting!
What a great hunt with a fine old rifle. The last few years I have started hunting a lot with lever guns and open sights. It has really put the fun back into deer hunting. I just stumbled over your channel and had to subscribe
Thanks, John and welcome aboard!
Great video. Thanks for keeping this channel going. I've been spreading the word about it at every opportunity.
Thanks a bunch! I really appreciate the help
Thanks for the video
That place looks awesome, I love the views and the hunting was really good, thanks for the video
You're very welcome. Glad you enjoyed it!
Great hunt . With that vintage Winchester, a few years back I passed up one like that at a flea market in .35 win for 400bucks ( what was I thinking!
Nice hunt. Really like that country. Drew the interstate tag this year but the bootleg fire fixed that for me. Out chasing blacktails instead. Thanks for showing your hunt.
You're very welcome Brian! Fortunately, the Bootleg fire didn't quite get to us. Best of luck on your blacktail hunting.
Nice shooting with that ole gun looked to me you weren't as far back as you thought
Good shooting mate. I think I'll take the scope off my Enfield.303-.270 sporter. A great old Aussie rifle should be used as intended I reckon.
I would love to vacation on your farm!
We're looking into building some cabins and offering "shooting vacations" here on the ranch.
Great shooting! Nice to be able to take a buck with a rifle like that.
Thanks! It was a very enjoyable hunt.
I love that rifle and congratulations on your hunt. The .30 -40 is one of my favorites mine is in a Krag carbine that is one of my best cast bullet shooters.
Thanks Flint! She's a real beauty! The 30-40 is a pretty underrated caliber. While it may not pack the punch of some of the more modern 30 caliber cartridges, it is more than adequate for mule deer.
Great deer, great rifle. Love the Model 95
Thanks James!!
@@thecinnabar8442 you're welcome
Fantastic video. Thank you for sharing. I wish I got to do this kind of hunting. Where we are, it’s basically sit in a tree stand or ground blind and wait. Not enough land to walk and stalk like that unfortunately. Keep up the great videos and God bless!
I really enjoy getting out and covering some ground and seeing some country when hunting. I'm not sure I could have the patience to sit in a stand.
Nice job solo filming your hunt and congratulations on your buck.
Thanks. It's a challenge, but I like the way it turned out when I was shooting with the camera mounted on my hat. Unfortunately, I turned my head slightly when I shot and the deer went out of frame. I'll have to remember that next time.
Good shooting, Thanks for sharing Cheers 🥂🥂🧔
You're very welcome!
Man I enjoyed that! Sneaking around with that old 95 that is fantastic. Congratulations, t-loins for dinner tonight
Thanks Robert! Glad you liked it!
Stunning. One time official weapon of Arizona Rangers
Thanks Larry! I have an 1895 that is supposed to have belonged to an Arizona Ranger. I doubt he used it on duty though, since it has a 36" barrel. I shoot it in one of my other episodes. Thanks for watching!
That was one of the best hunts I have seen in a while. Great shooting....subbed ya for more. congrats
Thanks so much Steve! Glad you like our channel
Excellent video ! Great hunting experience! Makes me want to get my 1901 1894 30WCF I had punched out to 38-55 out and take it hunting
Good luck with the hunting Brad! That old 1894 sounds like a great gun for all sorts of big game in your neck of the woods.
Fantastic shooting for that distance !!! Congratulations!!! Didn't get my deer this year , so it was fun tagging along and seeing your success.... I recently ( 2 months ago) picked up an original Model 1873 in 38-40 ,,, would love to do next year what you've just done ... That's if I can ever find some ammo for it ..... rarer than hens teeth these days ! Congrats again , and really enjoying your videos ,,, Happy new year to you and yours...
Thanks a bunch, Dan! Hope you get an opportunity to hunt with that '73 next year.
great video! my bucket list goal is to take a buck with my Springfield trapdoor carbine. this was most impressive!
Thanks a bunch Paul! Best of luck on getting a buck with that old trapdoor.
Great hunt and great eating :)
Thanks Jim!
