I was recently gifted a Winchester 1895 in 30-40 Krag. Serial #1355. According to the Winchester records I've been able to find, that means it was manufactured in 1896 I'm a lucky bugga.

To say the Russians did not use them is incorrect. The did in fact use them quite vigorously, some units were rejected by the Russian inspectors for minor flaws.

You're forgetting the 7.62x54r version of the 1895, which that one is one the holy grail gun for a lot of collectors out there since a lot of them were lost during WW1 and the Spanish Civil war

Just bought this 1895 Winchester gun in .405 Winchester new, LOL maybe I should have gotten the .30-06 option! I already had a BLR in .30-06 White Gold Medalian.

That was my holy grail gun. I first saw it in that movie The Wind and the Lion when the character playing Teddy Roosevelt is shooting it. I was just 10 but loved and wanted that rifle. In 2008 I saw a Japanese made Browning reproduction produced in 1984 brand new at a gun shop in Florida. $899 with all the tags. I grabbed it like a starving pilgrim. It’s chambered in 30-06 and without the tang safety.

I have my Grandfathers original 1895 it is beautiful, also many boxes of original ammo and lots of brass for it. The .405 is a beast and the first time I shot it in 1975 I was hooked it is now my pride and joy and hopefully will continue in my family for many years.

I gotta say, I am so tired of hearing people say that crescent butt plates are design to inflict pain it is absolutely not true! You need to know HOW to shoot with a crescent butt plate. The crescent is designed to go around your upper arm with your elbow perpendicular to your body. When shot properly the crescent butt plate is extremely comfortable with some of the heaviest recoiling loads. The crescent was popular due to its ability to be comfortable and keep the rifle stock in the same place for accurate off-hand shooting.

Well, not to make anyone jealous, but I inherited my Grandfathers 1895 30-06 take down model with factory folding buck horn sights and factory swivel sling mounts. It was made in 1915, It shoots like a dream and is very accurate even with the iron sights out to 250 yards. But, it also has a LYMAN frame mounted adjustable peep sight that extends the range to 800 yards using the small aperture. And as we all know, 30-06 ammo is readily available just about anywhere. 405 GRAIL SCHMAIL! 220 grain round nose 30-06 are HAMMER ROUNDS! And besides I do not plan to shoot Rhino or African Lions her in the USA with it. Just the critters here in THE Bob Marshall Wilderness of Northern Montana. where I live. HAPPY HUNTING Y'all

The rebounding safety doesn't make sense to me, you would have to cycle the action in order to get a live round.

Michael, I ordered mine at the Shot Show 3 years ago and I just received mine about a month ago. I have about 50 rounds of brass and 20 rounds of reloaded ammo that a friend made for me several years ago. I look forward to shooting it and I hope Hornady will make some more runs of .405!

Glad you found one...I bought one from a friend 20 years ago and came with a case of ammo...he never fired it.
Pacemaker makes a very thin Decellorator pad that isn't much thicker than the steel buttplate. I had a local rifle smith put one on mine and it makes a huge difference.
Sold off most of my ammo several years ago on GunBroker...brought $75-95 a box. Since Winchester is making runs of rifles it would sure be nice if Hornady would do a run of brass.
I shoot cast bullets from 280 to 350 grains as well as .410 pistol bullets.
Besides the 1895 I also have a 1885 Single Shot 24" Sporter and a TC Encore barrel that has been cut down to 20". Also had a stainless laminated Ruger #1 but sold it...
On to TRs guns is at the Cody Museum...it has a shotgun butt, not crescent...
There are also videos on UA-cam of a woman in Africa whi used one while protecting her husband while he was working...hers had a shotgun butt also.

I have four 1895s...3 originals in .405 WCF, .35WCF and .30 US (.30-40 Krag) and a 2002 Miroku remake in .30-06. The .405 and .35 were hand-me-downs from my grandfather, I bought the other two. Great rifles. I do most of my shooting with these with cast bullets and reduced loads. FWIW, you can make .405 (and .35 WCF) cases from .30-40 Krag by fireforming them. The cases are a little short, but this is not an issue in a box magazine. Just seat the bullets to normal OAL and have fun! No need to crimp in a box magazine. Most of my shooting with the .405 and .35 is done with reformed .30-40 Krag cases.
Also FWIW I do not use scopes on any lever gun. Peep sights are the way to go. Don't cobble up a slim, trim, easy to carry rifle with a scope.
That said, my favorite hunting rifle for many decades is a Savage Model 99 in .300 Savage. Were I to be looking for a new lever gun today, I believe I would choose the Henry "Long Ranger", probably in .308.
I am sold on the concept of box magazine lever rifles. Their advantages are great! Use any bullet, don't worry about crimping. The only disadvantage I see, and it is a small one, is that the rifle has to be "out of order" for reloading. You cannot top off the magazine through a loading port and be ready to shoot a round in the chamber, EXCEPT with the Henry Long Ranger or the Browning BLR (and some versions of the Savage 99)

I started at min powder charge. My rifle likes the hottest charge of h 4895. From the horady manual. Accuracy and extraction is easy. No flattened primers.. I have 300 loaded and 100 new brass. But will not sell. When I bought the rifle I bought 2 cases of ammo. 30.00 dollars per box. That's how long I've had mine. By the way it will flatten a big brown bear.

I’ve been considering one of these 1895/405’s but the ammo issue has been the deal breaker!
    I’ve got a pair of Model 70’s in 7x57 and 375H&H so I’m covered…

I bleed Winchester lever guns owning several originals myself. The only problem I see with the new made ones is that silly tang mounted safety feature. Total blasphemy if you ask me. Yes I know why it is there and for what reason but the originals already had a safety. It was called the half cock notch in the hammer. As far as the rear sights Lyman made a receiver mounted one. 405 Hornady brass sells now for 4 to 5 dollars each if you can find them so I feel your pain. I now buy them when I find them at any cost. Maybe Hornady will start making them again...

Looking forward to my "Bane-erized" 1895 with a shorter barrel, shortened stock with recoil pad, a plate on top of the bolt to carry a red dot (a la Big Horn Armory's gun) and long swivels. I worry about ever getting back to Africa, but if I do that will be my go-to gun for both plains and dangerous game like crocks and buffalo.

Very very nice gun but would a original made by the real Winchester company back in the day that is very tight with a excelent bore in a caliber thats easy to find like 30-06 or .303 brit or that russian thing not be a wiser and cheaper and more historical option..........
For me i own a original made in 1897 but converted to cal 30-06 reblued with the wood newly oiled (sounds like a franken gun) but the gun is perfect very very tight no wear on the bolt or moving parts and the barrel could be new......I would not swap it for a "Miruko" reproduction one even they might be stronger and and and.
But reproduction or not a 1895 nomatter what company made it,it is a piece off design/technique thats hard to find a match for to compete it.
