I was particularly put off by the judge saying he prayed for them. HIS religious beliefs should have no part in legal cases. His personal beliefs on ANY kind should have no part in legal cases. But religious one...that is really unprofessional. Leave that to the families and the priests/pastors/whatevers of their religion, should they have one. The rest of his statement was very pedestrian, and demonstrated a lack on insight into people and into why this case happened.

Each state is different. Not all state will have the impact statement after the guilty verdict is read, the judge the decide when to hold the sentencing date in which he will refer to both the defendant lawyes and the prosecutor lawyers. Once the sentence date is set than the impact statement will be read in court. This is done before the sentences phase begin.
Sometimes they do a pre sentence info to go over their past criminal history. If a lot… possibly more time, especially if they are committing the same ones over and over. This was quicker because he has zero criminal history. Boy oh boy did he do a doozy on his first one ever.
If you waive your right to a pre sentencing investigation (PSI) and the family of the victims is willing to do impact statements, some judges will do immediate sentencing. It goes state by state in some cases, too.
Especially when he said no matter what sentence it won’t bring the victim back. Sounds to me like words of comfort bc it’s true but at least he’ll rot since he’s not young.

Whether you are a potential victim and your partner is behaving agressively or whether you are angry and feel you can't hold back. Get away, take a step back, do NOT act in that moment, and don't take alcohol or drugs if you are in a distressed state or in high emotion. I do think this defendant may like to off himself, but it depends I guess on prison conditions and whether he can adjust and if he has outside people he can communicate with. A situation of intense emotion and jealousy which unfortunately escalated to the point one should never go to. The South Carolina Legislature drafted the statute so that nobody who is convicted of murder can ever get parole, regardless of the sentence the judge decides to give (which can never be less than 30 years). I guess they decided to give the judges discretion on how many years between 30 and life to give depending upon the mitigating and/or aggravating circumstances of each individual case. I would guess the judge decided to give him 45 years instead of life only because he had no prior criminal record. Nevertheless, he will be 88 when he gets out -- that is, if he survives that long.
