I was particularly put off by the judge saying he prayed for them.
HIS religious beliefs should have no part in legal cases. His personal beliefs on ANY kind should have no part in legal cases.
But religious one...that is really unprofessional.
Leave that to the families and the priests/pastors/whatevers of their religion, should they have one.
The rest of his statement was very pedestrian, and demonstrated a lack on insight into people and into why this case happened.

Each state is different. Not all state will have the impact statement after the guilty verdict is read, the judge the decide when to hold the sentencing date in which he will refer to both the defendant lawyes and the prosecutor lawyers. Once the sentence date is set than the impact statement will be read in court. This is done before the sentences phase begin.

Sometimes they do a pre sentence info to go over their past criminal history. If a lot… possibly more time, especially if they are committing the same ones over and over. This was quicker because he has zero criminal history. Boy oh boy did he do a doozy on his first one ever.

    • @trialjunkie

If you waive your right to a pre sentencing investigation (PSI) and the family of the victims is willing to do impact statements, some judges will do immediate sentencing. It goes state by state in some cases, too.

Good verdict and wordings given by the judge. The man just took the life of another man. What did he get by doing that? Life behind bars? Wife is still free to date other men. You should have thought smartly.

Straight talking judge. Truly tragic situation. A lesson for us all. Don't let things escalate EVER. Whether you are a potential victim and your partner is behaving agressively or whether you are angry and feel you can't hold back. Get away, take a step back, do NOT act in that moment, and don't take alcohol or drugs if you are in a distressed state or in high emotion. I do think this defendant may like to off himself, but it depends I guess on prison conditions and whether he can adjust and if he has outside people he can communicate with.
I know he's a murdererer and I am not denying that but I still feel it is tragic all round, even for him as I'm sure that is not the entire totality of his character. A situation of intense emotion and jealousy which unfortunately escalated to the point one should never go to. The ex wife also should have stopped them from meeting up; but hindsight is a wonderful thing and mentalities are loosened by alcohol .
When people ask "what is the point" we need to realise that murder especially in this case is an irrational act. It implies the lack of thought; the triumph of emotion over reason. It never ends well.

Orchestrating the whole thing she knew how to push both those boys buttons. She knew what she was doing. She couldn’t be happier to have him in jail for the rest of his life.
In church on Sunday, they talked about how a man should do all he can. When his wife goes astray like the good Lord does when we go astray from him. He does all he can to bring us back to him. That is what this man was doing.
He overlooked the other times of her going astray. Because he loved her. Oh, but you won’t hear about that. Why, because he would never say anything bad about his wife. He is too nice of a person and it’s very sad that he has to do this.

No possibility of parole in this case. Section 16-3-20 of the South Carolina Code of Laws states: "No person sentenced to a mandatory minimum term of imprisonment for thirty years to life pursuant to this section is eligible for parole or any early release program..."

@@ArnoldCohen-y1y You're welcome. The South Carolina Legislature drafted the statute so that nobody who is convicted of murder can ever get parole, regardless of the sentence the judge decides to give (which can never be less than 30 years). I guess they decided to give the judges discretion on how many years between 30 and life to give depending upon the mitigating and/or aggravating circumstances of each individual case. I would guess the judge decided to give him 45 years instead of life only because he had no prior criminal record. Nevertheless, he will be 88 when he gets out -- that is, if he survives that long.
