I’ve read a fair amount of McCarthy and so had to read Suttree after I watched this video. Just finished. Suttree is such an interesting character and wild to read of his experiences along the river. I have just three more books to read now in the McCarthy canon (Outer Dark, Child of God, and No Country for Old Men) and looking forward to it. Thanks for the video, Ed!
Suttree was challenging for me to get through; the audiobook (reading along with it) helped me immensely. Overall, I loved the book. It’s one of those weird ones that’s special, but it’s hard to figure out exactly why. It has heart, for sure, especially for a McCarthy novel
Loved the passionate review! This is one I need to read before I die for sure, and I’m very interested to expand my McCarthy experience beyond the Road.
Love Suttree, and think you put your finger on it with the word “heart”. And that you mentioned The Crossing in the same sentence makes me think you’ve got it 👍
Great video! I loved the passage you chose to read. I'm also a huge fan of McCarthy and Blood Meridian is also my favourite. Have you got a favourite passage from Meridian? Thanks to your video I think I'll wander back into Suttree and see where I get to.
Both great. Suttree in my mind belongs on the top shelf of American Literature. And his best work, althoughI confess to not making it through Blood Meridian the 1st time. I need to give that another chance, given the acclaim.

McCarthy's prose is next level in general. McCarthy's prose in Suttree is next next level even for McCarthy.

I totally understand why. I am really intrigued to check out the audio book. It’s certainly a unique book that makes you feel many unique things.

Great video Ed! You and Will have me really intrigued about this author. Will definitely have to check his work out.
Cheers P.L! Hope you enjoy him when you get to him.

Thanks for watching Ben! McCarthy is certainly worthy of a little dedication!
Ed
Happy reading to you! 😊
And to you Safina!

I'm hoping to start this either today or tomorrow. Today has been busier than I expected. Love the review though.

Thanks Sam! Oh I have tonnes from BM. My favourite is probably the Comanche attack. How about you? Thanks for watching!
Ed
Beautiful passage.
“ Melons in the Moonlight” 😂😅lmao
Hahahah never eating them again!

I gotta know more about this goat man
He steals the show for sure.
Ed
Suttree was probably my favourite McCarthy book, then The Passenger came our to dethrone it
I am buzzing to read The Passenger this month.
Ed
That’s interesting, I thought the Passenger was pretty mediocre for McCarthy’s standards. I felt Suttree was a much strong and well rounded character.

Yes I would read it. Most of McCarthy is too violent for me but this one sounds rather more gentle. As long as nothing horrible happens to the goats.🤕
Definitely lacking the violence of his other novels! The goats are safe, fear not.
Ed
The Goat Man existed in real life.

Sadly, Mr. McCarthy died today at the age of 89. He leaves an amazing legacy with his writing.
So sad to hear this. A truly sad day.
