Many strops use both the grain and the flesh side of leather, why did you choose to only use the grain side? Also, why is thinner leather better? Love your videos!
I'm not sure what the real experts say, but in my own opinion and based on my own experience, the answer to your 'why thinner leather' question is as follows. When you pull a blade cutting edge towards you on a strop, the geometry of the bevel starts to become convex. A convex edge is considered by some to be ideal, and thinner leather allows you to achieve this in a controlled manner. Thicker leather introduces the risk that as you pull the edge towards you, you are at the same time pushing the side of the edge into a deeper material - like running your hand along a deep pile carpet - inducing a deeper convex shape which in turn reduces the efficiency of the cutting edge. BUT 😉 my strops are all flesh side outwards and so this theory is based on that circumstance alone (even if it does apply to grain faced strops also). Jun is the first person I've known to use the grain side on his strops. I wonder how frequently he has to re-apply compound compared to managing the reverse, but apart from that I won't know whether there is any significant difference in performance until I make one.
