A google search for differential leak on a Ford Mustang turns up thousands of results mentioning a technical service bulletin to replace the vent with a vent hose kit. A good service writer should have caught that.
Most server writers have little experience or the experience they have is from working at a parts store. Whenever something technical comes up I get dragged over to the phone and have to explain
Yep. Leaking axle vents is an extremely common problem on this era of mustang.
that sounds like the write thing to do
Always check service recalls and bulletin 👍🏻
@Jeff Karpinski l would have done the same thing, and keep in mind that, I have been a master mechanic for over 32 years, so it's not the mechanic to blame for Ford and the cheap cost of the product, like a Mustang.
I've found that stubborn grease/oil buildup comes off way easier when I soak it in WD40 for a few minutes while I do the repair, then I use brake clean on it. It's the difference between using 1/2 a can and 3 cans of brake clean.
Yeah if he soaked it and agitated with a brush it would save a lot of cans of brake cleaner per year 😅
Ray likes to use multiple cans regardless of the need.
100% agree, brake clean evaporates far too quickly to dissolve into thick grease so you are just using it like a firehose. WD40 or pretty much any penetrating oil will soften this up.
@@deborahgeorge3238
It’s fun!
But: time is $$ and depending on the hourly shop rate (and the fraction of that going to Ray) AND the previously made statement that the shop pays for the atomic grease blasters, Rays way makes sense.
Personally, I've managed to make one can last (many moons ago) for TWO rebuilds of 1960s era military "Jeeps" (MUTTS).
BUT I'm cheap and my weekends were too...
For fun & reference, it would take about 20 years of non-stop, constant 60 mph driving to reach 10 million milles.
(1 mile a minute x 1,440 minutes in a day. Plus one day of driving every 4 years for leap year.)
Or driving at 174km/h (108mph) for the 11 years straight its existed to get to it.
Yeah I came here to say that. That car has either been tampered with or the video is clickbait. Not possible for it to have that many miles on it.
@@TehButterflyEffect or its just ford and their wonderful malfunctions
Yea I got 22 years at 70mph non stop
There’s not even a semi with 10 million miles on the clock. I call bullshit
You honestly do single handedly keep the brake clean industry in business. Wow, just Wow....
Good to see a mechanic who isn’t trying to rip people off I really care about the work they do
Now I know what the "shop supplies" fee is for! I can't wait to have the opportunity to try the brake clean pressure washer 👍
i just did it at work yesterday:D works very well:D
the CRC Heavy Duty Degreaser that foams cleaned the hell out my coil packs and top my engine from years of oil spillage and gummy crud (last owner must have had real shaky hands) plus it’s safe for plastics. Quick spritz of that then some carb/brake clean and it comes right off shiny
I couldn't imagine the brake clean high this dude got from all that brake clean, for me it took like 10 seconds of using brake clean before everything started spinning lmao
It's impressive how clean that dif is after 10000000 miles.
Never was 10 mil
Thats ford quality for ya
I was going to say the same thing.
Back in the 70s when I worked at an Exxon station we had a handy dandy 15 gallon barrel of gear lube with a pneumatic pump and nozzle to fill differentials and manual trannies (can I say that here?) We never had to mess with gear lube bottles. Checking the diff was part of every oil change we did.
Back when people got their monies worth.
I have a lovely part number that’ll help you out tremendously on filling with bottles.

I picked up one at O’Reillys and I love it.
Call Guinness tell them Ray has broke record for highest amount of brake clean used on one vehicle!!
I wonder how much she was charged for "shop supplies" lol
minor correction, Brake cleaner used on vehicle while not actually cleaning brakes.
That is gunna come back!
I dont know.....I gotta feeling that Eric O. from south main auto may be the keeper of that record lol. Anyone who has seen his channel knows he is a hard core brake clean user!

A friend had this issue and I guess it's a common issue on 2011-2013 mustangs. The vent needs to be replaced.
Bet invent stuck open
@@Dirtyharry70585 yep it looked like after Ray sprayed around the vent it was moving freely.
I think the dealer fixed that on my 2012 many years ago when my wife took it in for other service.
Great Mexico
A friend’s 2012 needed a new diff shortly after it was bought used with 36k miles. Fixed under warranty but I bet this was the problem with his too.
Us old school guys would have lifted the car first, cleaned it real well and then test drove it. That would better reveal the leak and problems like leaks at the tube/differential joint or cracks in the tube, One time I found the crude was holding a broken vent in place. Just an FYI, for future reference.
One more question. Where is the vent hose? Back in my day there was a hose going from the vent tube up to keep water out when going through puddles.
Absolutely the best way, save from having to do it twice.
Pretty sure they dont put them on rwd cars because they're not meant to be in deep water and if you are in deep enough water to get water into the vent well your interior is going to be flooded.
I've worked on plenty of old cars that don't have a hose on the vent. It is designed to be one way to relieve vapour build up and not allow anything in. It's the build up of crud that prevents them closing so oil vapour leaks out.
It's been my experience that cars just get the cap style and the hose goes on 4x4 trucks, jeeps, and anything that can be considered to be used off-road
@@TheFallenAngel13524 so water gets inside. We saw that all the time. Unless it got deep enough to get in the dash it was no problem. Take out the seats and carpet, clean them and let them dry, throw out the batting and replace it. Reinstall the cleaned and dried seats and carpet and you are ready to go.
Literally just commenting for this; At approx 3:39 someone is playing “Bad Apple” one of the most well known Touhou series songs (For those who don’t know) thanks to whoever it was for bringing out my inner nerd.

Those $1 laundry scrub brushes work wonders for getting rid of caked on grease.
Bit of degreaser or brake clean a quick scrub, then a blast with degreaser or brake clean again to rinse the crap off and it comes up looking like new.
Might be faster than finding shop air and using 3 cans of brake clean.
Ya nothen like giving the car a nice coat of brake clean and grease. Some brake clean and a rag would of cleaned it in two wipes
I dunno man that brake clean air gun looked kinda fun if ya ask me… sometimes ya just gotta live a little 🤷🏼♂️😂
@@KirbyJ89 lol someone should make an attachment for shop air guns so you can mount a can on them like a paint sprayer.
I like using engine shampoo and a tire lube brush to really get it in there, I then hit it with a pressure washer and everything comes right off. I know a lot of shops don't have that on hand but it's cool to see how we all do different things to achieve the same result
Lolol, but then you're 2/3 of the way to a flamethrower.
I had the same issue and also thought a bad weld could contribute to the leak. Checked the fluid level and added 1 0z of oil dye, drove and found it was the check ball in the vent cap. No more worries about the axle tube.
Interesting. Was never aware of "oil dye" before.
As a 37 year mechanic, I have to say it's very relaxing to watch someone else doing the work! LOL. But I am surprised you didn't actually remove the vent to blow through it and make sure it is not plugged.
eh, if its plugged it aint leaking, right?
@@Peter-wo4uo If plugged, can be forced out through the seals and joints as he noted.
2:57 "it's for my channel only". haha. that cracked me up. Love you dude.
I know from my experience with trucks that when a vent cap gets plugged the diff will spray out fluid due to the pressure from the heating of the rear, clean up the plug and change the oil. You cleaned the rear end up too. You’re my hero.🤣
As always, you’re great. Thanks from the North.

You make mechanic work a joy to watch. You really investigate to repair a vehicle instead of replace parts. A well deserved attaboy.
he missed one of the thousand of articles about a TSB related to that air bleed valve and replacing it with a different set of parts. Could have saved a bunch of gear oil and time.
Yeah so what exactly did he investigate? He dumped perfectly good gear oil just to replace it with more. Didn't even address the real issue. Just cleaned the axle.
I’ve only seen 3 of your videos but I’ve noticed two things. Cars like giving you the money shot, and when life gives you lemons, spray ‘em with brake cleaner!
Do we miss the DO-DEE-DO-DEE-DO? A little bit, but going from a bay technician to a business owner and watching this journey, has made Ray one of my go-to channels on UA-cam.

The epitome of “don’t let the bastards grind you down”.
Man, the way you manage to be creative in talking to yourself (and us viewers) while working is exemplary. Wish I had the creativity to do something like that, because I mostly grumble some unfinished sentences to myself when there's nobody around (being the only IT person in a company kinda sucks when it comes to not having a like-minded colleague to talk to). Oh well, I guess I will have to hang in there, knowing that when I get home I get to watch more funny stuff from Ray and his workplace. Thank you for keeping up the positivity, it really helps in the long run.
Apply thread sealant to vent plug.
Tighten vent plug, add hose, secure suspended above axle assembly. Possibly add small breather filter/fuel filter.
That's a great idea. Old school mud running 4x4 style.
RIGHT ON- 4x4 SHOULD HAVE LONG VENT HOSE .
If you noticed he had removed a cap on the vent and cleaned it because it was plugged with oily dirt a car like that is not expected to be used off-road so it really isn't necessary to have a long hose. It could be just the climate where the car is used because as you know in warmer climate oil will expand a lot more and as he said if you're basically hot rodding it it's going to heat up faster and expand. In that case a taller vent would be sufficient.
Having done many diff services on Ford 8.8's, I can for sure tell you they have real gaskets for that diff cover! 🙂
Sometimes watching yours & others repair and shop videos am amazed at the amounts of brakeklean and carbklean used, guess I'm just old fashioned,, scrape, wirebrush, and then the kleaner of a shop towel or rag

10,424,904 miles is almost exactly 2^24 km (just about 25 miles over). So this could be a single bit that got flipped due to cosmic radiation, which happens from time to time. But where did the 95000 miles go? Maybe the memory got corrupted/wiped? Or an error during data transfer to the scan tool.
If it’s 10 million miles, ford should give this guy a latest gt500 as reward like the guy with f150 over the odometer limit iirc?
Seems to be a logical explanation.
The reason that it has 10mio miles and shows 95.000 could be that usely multiple computers inside the car counting miles.
The cockpit computer shows the correct 95k and the engine computer he is checking has the flipped bit and shows 10 mio.
The 25miles of could be the case that the engine got tested on a dyno in the factory for normal quality control.
@@jonasstahl9826 I still don't understand why the 95,000 miles are missing, though. Did it not count them for some reason? Maybe it was defective and stopped at 25 miles, then the bit flip occurred at some point in the past 11 years. Very strange.
Something is obviously wrong. An in service date of 1/1/2011 through today is 4229 days, which would mean the car has been driven 2465 miles per day. Even converting 10M km to miles would result in 1532 miles per day. A single decimal place shift of 153 miles per day is 55k miles per year.
@@joemrkvicka3393 Thanks for doing the math. I was going to do it out of shear boredom on a Monday at work. I thought I would check "Comments" first. That's alot of friggn driving. And on Mustangs tiny gas tank, that's alot of exercise.
Those wobbly vents work ok but require cleaning. The axle seal probably started leaking because the vent was clogged and when the axle got hot the pressure had to go somewhere. With the new axle seal it went somewhere else, I am surprised it wasn't out the other side seal. When anything is done to the axle the vent should be checked (make sure it wiggles) and clean it to ensure it wiggles.
Clogged with Ground Metal Shavings, no less!

Ray loving the Daul brake cleaning also I think there should be a word of the day every because its funny 👍
My brother drove a 1 ton Chevy step van Denver to Wisconsin, freeway all the way. He was stopping to add rear end grease every 100 miles or so. We talked later about it, said the grease was coming out the vent fitting. I had a "wild blue yonder" flash. That truck had never been driven that fast for any distance, so this never came up. I said that MAYBE the step van body created weird air currents and there might actually be a low pressure area right there. I suggested he put a piece of fuel line over the vent and clamp it up high on the underbody. No more problems!
The old Fords from the '60s through the '80s had a rubber hose on the vent nipple, typically going up into a hole in the frame rail with a clip to keep it there. I'm sure that would take care of the problem.
@Marty's 4x4 theres a service bulletin for these vents failing. Second time in for the samething should have been looked into and would have seen its a common problem w a TSB/technical service bulletin. Shes guna be pissed when she comes back a 3rd time for the samething. Hopefully someones smart enough to look into next time
4:19 Do I hear Bad Apple in the background?
After using silicone gasket maker, cure times have to be observed. Uncured silicone will leak. I'm surprised that your shop doesn't have a bulk dispenser for gear oil. Is the vent removable? If so, unscrew it, clean it out, and then reinstall. When refilling, allow time for the gear oil to settle in the pumpkin. Check level again, with your finger.
I just love that "Bad Apple" is playing in the background.

For the reading of 10,424,904 miles on the odometer: this looks like the maximal integer value for a 24 bit number, if we assume the scan tool internally works with kilometers instead of miles.
When we use the following conversion factor for miles -> km :1.60934, we get the following.
(2^24-1)/1.60934 = 10,424,903.997
A mere 0.003 miles off what the scantool says.
Seems too close to be a coincidence.
(Mind you, this is not the most exact conversion factor, the actual one is 1.609344, so I truncated the final 4)
Why the scantool -- or the car's internal computer -- works with a 24 bit unsigned integer in this millennium is a mystery to me. Perhaps someone else can fill that bit of the mystery in.
Uhhh yea what he/she said.....
Good catch. You think it could be related to the single stall event?
@@BixbyConsequence I don't think so, no. The car itself seems to know its mileage well; 95k miles. So I would guess either a bug in the scantool, or some kind of problem in the data transfer from the car to the tool. Perhaps the tool is reading out the wrong memory address or something, which is all 1's. But that's pure speculation.
Maybe they ran it in reverse and it rolled over...to negative milage, ha ha.
A previous comment pointed out a possible bit flip due to cosmic radiation. It happens on very rare occasions, and also one of the reasons why servers that run 24/7 use error-correcting (ECC) RAM to account for the bit flip (among other reasons).
As a real world occurrence, this happened during a town election in Europe when a bit flip caused one of the candidates to have obscenely more electronic votes than the town population. A hint was that the vote count was also almost exactly a base 2 number.
Ray, I wonder why that vent wasn't attached to a hose that would let out the air but if routed correctly wouldn't leak oil?
You should have added a vent line and brought it up well above the diff. When I worked at GM we used to add a fuel filter on the end of said line on stubborn vehicles that leaked from the remote hose.
Finally, someone who loves brake cleaner as much as I do!
Yeah, that axle vent gets nasty; had to clean mine out awhile back for leaking, too. Later got replaced (repair shop somehow damaged the cap when putting a new gear set in). Hard use will net some overflow as well in time. The 70w90 is the stuff and if using one for competition (drag or heavy spirited driving, for example) I recommend a girdled cover. Ford put 75w140 in it originally...for some reason, so I burnt up some axle bearings PLUS a hard bit on the strip ate chunks out of the carrier bearings along with destroying the stupid 2-pc driveshaft. Now have a solid 1-pc steel shaft, custom-made for the car by a buddy that makes HD off-road ones, new everything, and all is well! The 8.8 is tough and versatile, but maintenance is key. Also, if the vehicle sits too long, expect seepage from the axle/pinion seals...along with a LITTLE from driving it; nature of the beast with how the seals work. Great video, thanks!
I wonder if it's got stop/start and it's turning off and they think it has stalled.
Lol def not on a 2011 Mustang v6
not in2011 that was before the nanny state nonsense started
I would just replace the vent. They’re pretty cheap and will last that much long. Plus if it comes back, you’ll know it’s not the issue.
fords are notorious for leaks when the vent is in the axle tube instead of the TOP OF THE DIF!! hard driving or parking in a angle/slope will cause the oil to run to that tube/ fill it, and then come out the overflow vent. Ask customer if they park the car on a slope/ angle. Also the FORD vent likes to fail, the check ball likes to stick open...
The best way to fill the diff with oil is a short peace of small hose. Slide it up on the oil jug and squeeze!! Works great every time. And you wont spill a drop!! Try it!!!
SO satisfying seeing the clean pumpkin cover……..👍🏽
There's supposed to be a hose from the axle to the body that stops it from doing exactly what it is.
Trucks, SUV 4x4 and 4x2 only.
That oil in the rear-end looked fine to me. Efforts to the right side should have been the proper repair.
Another quality video! Question Ray, Has the shop ever given you a hard time about using so much brake clean?
Gets paid for under shop supplies, customer pays.
I also wondered the same, Oh he splashes those suckers, mehn..😂😂
He goes overboard for the channel so I imagine he makes it good with the shop in some way.
Hey Josh Peets@ I was thinking about that too,it seems like Ray would be using the shop's parts solvent cleaner machine instead of all those cans of brake cleaner...🤔
The Subaru shop I used to deal with had a huge bulk tank of solvent and the techs all had "sure shot" cans that could be refilled and pressurized with air. It was supposed to be less expensive than going through all those cans.
I knew I heard Bad Apple in the background. I used to listen to that every morning on the way to work back when I worked at a terrible tire shop for a while.
Ein weiterer feiner Job. "another fine job.".
Another great Rainman production. Dueling brake clean cans. It's been a few episodes. Its a great cleaner. I always have a can around. OK it's a mustang. You really think it's been grandma'ed to the store? My nefew tries to drift his BMW and it's a luxury car. Warm that fluid and try that. Watch how much fluid comes out. This does not mean the overflow is stuck or defective. I would say it's doing its job. They were just nonremovable floating caps. I doubt they have changed much. Clean it, check it over, just like ray did.
You know I like how everyone says how they would do it. See one of the things you might get to realize as you get older, No, 2 people do a job the same. That does not mean wrong or right just different. Replacing overflow, seems pointless. It's an overflow, don't give it Reason to work and it won't. Oh he should have cleaned axle before removing cover. Why? It was not aimed that way. This is Rays show. He does consistently good work. I'll defer to his judgement. You try to work, make a video and have someone pick you apart. See like it's said, hind sight is 20/20. I'll bet most of you would not last a week in Rays shoes.
Well said my friend, well said! 👏
Replacing the overflow/vent is not pointless when these a service bulletin. Since this is the second time the cars been in for this that should have been checked for
Ray the vent needs changing bud and a vent pipe fitting
So did just changing the diff oil fix the leak? Ever really determine the cause of the leak?
We will never know.1
I doubt it. Theres a service bulletin for replacing it. Second time this cars been in for the samething. Should have checked for that. Quick Google search shows its a common issue w a service bulletin. She will be pissed when she comes back for it a 3rd time unless she goes somewhere else cause shes sick of spemding money for no reason
I was waiting for the brake clean interaction sound. WATCH OUT ERIC O! Awesome video Ray.
When working with things like differential covers, get a couple of bolts of the proper thread size and pitch. Cut the heads off. After cleaning the surface, screw the headless bolts into two of the top bolt holes, and hang the cover from the bolts while you get the rest started. Snug the rest down, then replace the 2 headless bolts with the original bolts and finish the job. Cut slots for a flat blade screwdriver if you want, drill for cotter pins if you have trouble keeping the cover hanging on the bolts.
If that Mustang was really 10 million miles he'd be the world record holder of the highest mile longest running Mustang in the world

I don't know what kind of support snap-on has for their tools, but for example if that was a Volvo tool and I made a support ticket they would be very eager to do a remote connect and figure out where the calculation goes wrong.
$120 for the rear differential service and $75 for brake cleaner.
"It can't reach the top of the fill hole because it's a hole"
Sooo wrong, you just need to make sure it goes in faster than it's coming out 😂
Easy to do in cold weather with 85W140 weight gear oil ;)
few spritzes of break clean and a nylon brush you'd been done in seconds and with half a can, you are very in efficient with your chemical utilization!
Older axles back in the day had problems with oil coming out the vent. A fitting installed where the vent went to attach a hose (trans cooler hose works well) with the vent attached at the end of the hose works well. Just have to raise it up a bit and secure it. Also, make sure the correct gear oil is installed. :D
Hehe. Do you guys buy brake clean by the pallet load?
I thought the oil coming out looked awfully thin for gear oil but the new stuff seemed the same.
Wouldn't it have been prudent to change the vent?
Hey Ray, since you seem to work on many makes and models, did you ever think of doing a couple of videos on best/worst cars to own/work on?
Don't give him any ideas, he might just turn into the next Scotty Kilmer 😂
@@jessepickar3297 ROFL!!!
You can tell from the start of this video he wasn't interested in finding a problem, and didn't believe there was a problem until he saw the oil on the axle. Even then he didn't address the problem with the vent, and just sprayed brake clean like an idiot.
Ray loves his brake clean. Amazing solvent...
Tetrachloroethylene and acetone..... absorbs through the skin in milliseconds and the gases through the lungs into the bloodstream even faster. I hope Ray has a nice strong liver.
For an easier way to pump the oil in that I use is a outboard marine lower end gear oil pump, they screw right on to the bottles and you have a handy dandy little hose to fill up the diff or where ever. works great to refill transmissions and transfer cases also
It has been a life saver
This is a nugget of wisdom +1 to you sir
@@oriwittmer my father tought me that a long time ago, he wrenched for 40 years, it's the little things like this that only a seasoned mechanic would know, also not every job has to be done by the book, through my years of mechanics the books and all data info are helpfull, but sometimes there is going to be a faster way to get it done, sometimes not.
The internal casting that holds the differential gears is called the case. The carrier is the external housing that holds the assembly together. You have it reversed. I am a retired engineer from Chrysler manufacturing, so, working in the axle manufacturing plant for 20 of my 40 years of experience gives me the moral authority to correct you. Take that, Rainman! 😀
Nothing says 'state of the art 21st century sporty car' like having a solid rear axle and an open diff.
I thought those had the clutch based diff
@@afhostie live axle unit shows why Mustangs take out crowds! Their first effort at IRS was probably worse in 2017! They should have adopted the Aussie Falcon rear end!
If I remember correctly, that car cost about 23,000 bucks out the door.
You don't sell "state of the art" for 23 grand.
It's more like fun for your money.
It scores pretty high there.
More cleaning than fixing for sure. Something must be up with that vent on the axel.
That's cool! I never seen anything like that. Millions of miles
11 year old mustang with 10 MILLION miles on it? HOLY COW! I saw the vid title, thought it would be a 60s pony. Dang!
I thought that the vent should have a hose connected to keep oil from coming out as the axle bounces up and down.
Its impossible for there to be even a 1million mile mustang given the rising number of Jersey barriers currently in use.
Try soaking with WD40 before the clean, I work in U/G mining and it usually gets most of the filth build up off easier.
Also, do you guys pay your own consumables like brake clean etc or does the shop buy and pass on a consumables fee?
"shop supplies"
I knew the answer to that question before Ray used up the first can of brake clean. The first can he used 3yrs ago when I first started watching Ray.
Ending with a nice and shiny rear end. Love it. Great job as always.
It funny, I had to do wheel seals on a 99 ranger I used to own. After drain and filling the diff with the proper amount I found the vent tube and hose would shoot gear lube all over the fuel tank rock guard for some reason. Mabey the vent valve is bad?
