  • Evo car of the year 2022 has just landed, and the Toyota GR86 beat the Porsche Cayman 718 GT4 RS. Quite a subjective opinion in my view. Nothing wrong with the Toyota... however I fail to understand how the Porsche Cayman 718 GT4 RS was dropped out of the contest before the Toyota GR86, when only earlier in the year the Porsche Cayman 718 GT4 RS was "the best car" Steve Sutcliffe has ever driven.

Hi Max...reading some of the comments here people forget one thing: Who the hell buys a GT4RS as an "overall" car?
Heck, even Cayman/Boxster S/GTSs are purchased as fun weekend cars that you could daily with some compromises.
If this will be your "only" car I think you are looking at the wrong one.....this 4RS has a very specific type of use.
Without talking about ADMs or upcharging by dealers this is a very nice package for the cost...

Honestly I'm happy for the gr86, it's came a long way and i really want it to NOT be discontinued, i want it to get as much credit as possible, to sell like hotcakes so Toyota will make another generation with a slight redesign that will suit the head in the rear end European laws .

I agree, we all need great cars at a much better price point than reflected by the majority of the cars on test. With this new Toyota GR86 vs the new Honda Civic Type R, this rivalry will hopefully keep going.

Ironically the Toyota GR86 is more difficult to buy than the GT4RS. Who would have guessed that.

The issue isn't that the cayman is bad or that it was terrible, there isn't much of an issue with that car. The other cars including the GR86 are simply just better cars

I think the problem with the GT4 RS is it's too stiff for the roads EVO were testing the cars on. If you looked at all the 'special' cars they were all jiggling around as they are all stiffly sprung but the GT4 RS did look the stiffest. My own 981 GT4 would also be a nightmare to drive on some of those roads and Max your 981 GT4 would be too. If I had the chance to have allocation of a GT4 RS I wouldn't even think of the EVO test.

Great article. I’m guessing these reviewers aren’t stupid and really know that these reviews are more for entertainment than credible journalistic value. Much like comparing a golf gti with a 992 and the golf
winning because it has more shopping capacity. Totally redundant as a piece of advice for buyers but entertaining nonetheless

Hi Max, why not starting reviewing different cars as well? Just try out the GR86 for yourself and tell us your experiance on this one as well. You know some of your viewers have had the predesessor (I have already sold my GT86 again after approx. 2 years ownership, but loved it very much as well). But to be honest, no matter the roads I would have probably always put the GT4RS over the GR86 just because of the development and the technology used between those 2 cars...

The goal was to determine which car was the most enjoyable to drive in real world conditions. The Corvette was not there nor was the base Cayman or the Cayman S - and no one in their right mind puts a GR86 ahead of those - so why was the GR there? Probably because it was readily available AND because it’s at a price point that many can afford (aka clickbait). The GR86 is a decent little car but let’s be real - it’s no base Cayman, Cayman S, nor Corvette….

Cars have got too stiff, chasing lap times never helps on the road - perhaps a GTS 4.0 or base cayman would have been better

Porsches are of course generally set up for smoother German roads, do they do any development in the UK?
However great both cars are can you easily buy either of them?
I can see why they chose the GR86 it's the last affordable small sports car, apart from the MX-5.

    • @mgdrive8409
      @mgdrive8409 Рік тому

Not to dissapoint but the roads in Germany are absolutely not the smoothest like you would think unfortunately...
What I know for a fact is that every manufacturer does NVH testing on different road surfaces and needs to decide on their setup. If you want something to fit your roads that you drive on you will always need a aftermarket suspension you can change for your likes or buy one good system like the current GT3 RS has where you can change settings on your steering wheel in real time which probably would have solved also the voting of the GT4 RS in the mentioned test by Max...

regular cayman gt4 is incredibly boring car, comparing to what you're expecting. Yes, it would be fun, if your previous experience consists of rental bmw 3series, but if you get a chance to drive a proper interesting sportcars (which could actually cost less even) - it would be one of the most forgettable car in the world.
gt4rs probably much better due to the engine, but I'd imagine it's still nowhere near of proper excitement and chassis communication. Especially for that insane price, car is like stupid slow for that pricetag.
Of course hardcore porsche fanboys would be butthurt that even 30k toyota is way more fun car that their favourite cayman.
p.s. it doesn't mean that caymans are slow on track; but they will bore you to death while doing it. The only more or less interesting cayman's are gt4 clubsport racing cars, which are obviously far far far away from road cars. And yet they're not an easy cars to drive, crappy cheap platform is doing everything it can to slow you down. You just have to have a car to compare.

      @@StyleXtube gt4rs - no. Gt4 - yes; GT4 clubsport race car - also yes. 992 gt3 - yes.
      So kinda could've imagine.
Chassis is still the same on rs, that stupid mcpherson struts on all corners and so on.
And in terms of perfomance - for crying out loud, this thing is slower than a 5-year old corvette z06 with a manual on a ring; could be faster on other tracks, on waaaaaaaay newer and grippier tires though.

@Sugandese Nuts watched it. Just gave my 5 cents.
They didn't like car that much overall, which is in a line with my thoughts, it's just not enough of a car, price-wise especially.
It's not superfast on track, but utterly compromised on the road. What this car is for?
All I'm seeing in all reviews is screaming about induction noise. For most reviewers that's enough, but in real life Idk, other cars have so much more to give.
It even looks super regular, seen bunch of them in person - downright boring.
p.s. I wasn't talking about grip limits, but more about feedback from the chassis.

@@terminatedphil sure thing. Will name only similar car in terms of size and platforms; but could expand it even more.
Chevrolet Corvette C8 (even regular would work, but I guess Z06 is light years ahead of it even; I tried only regular one).
Much better chassis to begin with; better feedback from it; more interesting engine (this part for z06 only); way more modern and functional interior (caymans have utter garbage interior, it's hilarious how bad it is); way better perfomance (z06 only; though regular c8 with few updates would give the run for its money too); all it comes for way lower price too. You can buy like 2 regular c8's and mod them, lol. And yes, you could actual have fun with them even on the regular roads and it's by all means usable daily's!
Ferrari 488 GTB (or 458 even). Yep, not superfresh platform, but cayman is from stone age itself. Again, proper chassis, proper feedback; more interesting and powerful engines; overall thrill and emotions. Interior is 80's styled, but it has charms too; though quality and few parts are typical italian garbage quality. Much more emotions while driving even on regular speed, again, and pretty good for daily (I double dare you to drive cayman, even regular one, on a long trip - it's masochism, interior clearly wasn't made by persons who actually drive those cars).
Will kill the gt4rs on track as well.
      And it has proper looks.
Porsche 992 GT3 itself - basically, proper suspension setup, way more interesting chassis overall, the same (but better) engine, better interior (though quality are supercarish as to say on the ones I know). And better on emotions side too; obviously, not a chance on track for gt4rs on that battle too.
Mclaren's (something like 600LT) should be better in pretty every way too; I didn't try them yet.
      AMG GTR Pro could be better overall too;
Old Corvettes like ZR1 and Z06 (c7 body) are def better, all the reasons from c8 corvette works there too. Plus could've the manual.
Don't know about the Lambos. But latest Huracan should be fun too; probably better than cayman in every possible way as well.
There is a good video about porsche's in youtube.
"Porsche don't make a great cars. They just make a really, really good cars."
And for the quarter mil you could've a great car.Or good car, but better in every aspect from Porsche itself.
