Canadian here. I just got my Trueno Blue GR86 AT6 Premium a few weeks ago. Being a bit of a geezer who had a 1986 MR2 for some dozen years in the Canadian Rockies I decided on getting another Toyota sports car. and this was it. I did no research, I just put in my order and got it 6 months later. I had prior experience with Subaru boxer engines having had 3 of them over a 17 year period and I drove them in the oil fields as my field vehicle, reliable wheels with no real issues, they got me there and back every time. The first few weeks have been a pleasure, I am now on the east coast and roads can be quite windy and hilly. since I received it I have been watching the reviews and they all sing a similar tune, a great zooming package without a lot of modern nonsense and weight that the European cars have for a fraction of the price. that said it actually has a real albeit small trunk that resembles a height limited hatchback when the back "seat" is folded down. I like your review, it is my impression exactly. The functions the AT6 has which are not available in the MT6 bring us into the present and does reduce the workload on a longer haul.

Usually when I watch your videos, by the end, I want to go out and buy a new car. Your enthusiasm for whatever you are driving, and for the driving itself, is infectious. But... This might be the first video of yours that makes me think I don't want to get a new car and instead keep the one I have, because it embodies everything you identify as why the new GR86 is such a great car: Super light, RWD, 240hp, minimal luxuries (doesn't even have power seats), and just a freaking blast to drive. Thank you sir.
So many of these journos/UA-camrs need to go back and drive the GT86 - they’re brilliant. Yes, the GR has undoubtably improved things in quite a few areas but the fundamental driving experience is very similar. Given the fact the GR86 is unobtanium in the U.K. a nice used GT86 seems like phenomenal value for money
The 86 is such a wonderful car, I remember that 718 Spyder video you made that says like "This is so disappointing, it can't be enjoyed pretty much anywhere :(" well, this is a car that you can enjoy pretty much EVERYWHERE, EVERYTIME. And on top of that it's affordable? This might just be the best sports car short of a 911 GT3. I love this car with every strand of my body, of my mind, of my heart, and of my soul ❤️ Yes, there are better cars, but what this offers at a reachable price for most people is unbelievable. And now thanks to the Gazoo Racing brand it feels so special ❤️
I had a GT86 before I got into F-Types, and it was bloody fantastic. The manual gearbox is the best I’ve ever used, light and enough power to have fun with. Would love to try the GR86

Good review. I appreciate the honesty tbh. I gotta say I was expecting the Doug Demuro effect of “it’s fine for the peasants but I drive Ferraris”. Lol. But you were down to earth and on the level. Honestly I actually enjoyed the traffic bits. It's interesting to see how just working the controls in stop-and-go traffic goes. Interesting to see those narrow UK roads and a big motor coach on them too, from my USA perspective. Well done in spite of your less than desirable conditions.
To be able to make polished YT content in a busy world, without a closed environment, often comes with a very low success rate and requires retake after retake. Good man for reminding us how hard it can be, and often is.
I think you should try the LC 500 - you'll pretty much buy it on the spot, I feel. Best GT car that doesnt give you headaches and is (and sounds) drop dead gorgeous!
I watch your videos for 3 reasons; 1. You, you are an interesting person and great at reviewing all types of cars. 2. Even though you speak posh lol, you are someone I would sit at a bar and have a beer with (that is how I rate people, lol) Then 3. Your editing is amazing, but that's the last reason, so thank you for your intro, but it's not a bother. I worked in the UK, so It's still relatable about the roads, and here in Canada we do have a few roundabouts.
Two things 1) Your videos are fantastic and I love the attention to detail that you put into each of the videos. 2) Out of curiousity and I know different breed aims but how would you compare this to the Porsche 718 Caymans?
I have a 718 Cayman S and drove one of these at the local Toyota dealer last fall. Honestly the GR really handles its weight like a mid-engine car and the driving position feels really similar. Obviously the 718 is pushing a bit more power and overall refinement (steering feedback, fit/finish, etc), but from a pure driving experience it really does give you that same silly grin whipping around a roundabout and wringing out the gears. For a whole lot cheaper too!
The opening of video was awesome, so we can appreciate just how much effort you put into your mega content!!! It’s not unnoticed mate!!! Love the GR86!!!
Good one Sam, much appreciate your honest talk. Cool to see you took Twiggy along for the drive and in the end, you got there✌ Just a note, has the Dacia Spring landed on the British shores? Perhaps suitable for a next episode of getting coffee in a new car. Paul, Tony, and yourself off to somewhere nice. As always, thank you, keep at it please, 600K YT subscribers is on the horizon 📈
Love the honesty Sam, that's what makes you and your content who you are, and that's why we keep coming back. Good days and bad days, continue to be true to who you are. Hang on in there, spring will come, one day maybe in May?!
Honestly, Your videos stend out amongst others with quality of visual presentations, beutiful shots and editing. Farewell to Jaguar F-Type is just stunning brilliance. But. Huge part of why Your videos are so good is You. Your perspective, thoughts, just chatting to us, viewers. And if sometimes everything is agaist you like traffic, weather, flocs of pigeons carpet bombing everything on the ground ;P , don't beat yourself and carry on, we will enjoy wathing your content enyways.
We don’t mind Sam - those of us who follow regularly know you’ve got the goods👍 I’ve been wondering about one of these to replace my 2006 Boxster. Similar specs on paper. Can’t quite bring myself to lose the soft top and the Porsche badge to be honest! Despite the maintenance bills…
We appreciate the content you make dedication to what you do sometimes can make you doubt yourself & sometimes angry , so it’s fair to take your time enjoy what you’re doing & we will be patient & wait for the location’s & quality you provide… Sometimes you have to compromise to deliver… Thank you 🙏 Another road trip on a ferry wouldn’t go a mis either 👍👍🏁 cheers
American GR86 owner here! Loved the review and your ability to sum up exactly why I love the GR86 even as a daily driver. Love seeing you review more easily accessible vehicles :)
I came to see yet another praise video about the GR86 and ended up paying attention to the dog in the passenger seat listening like he's the one being told about the car. That's a good boi...
My dad has had over 60 performance cars in his lifetime. From 200bhp integras to 500bhp+ Evos, M4's R35's etc. He got his GR86 about 6 months ago, and be absolutely adores it, so much so he's placed it in the top 3 cars he's ever owned. He loves the way it drives, he loves the way it looks and he loves the effects it has on his wallet.
So what exactly do you think makes this car so fun? It's just crazy to think your dad has this as his top 3 assuming he's owned over 60 performance cars.
I’ve been waiting to hear your thoughts on this car! As someone who gets to experience the best the automotive world has to offer, it’s refreshing to see your reaction to something people could potentially afford. Great job!
Sam, your one of the best Automotive Content creators out there and we fully appreciate the 110% you out into your videos! Keep doing what your doing 🔥
Sam, loved the video as always. Maybe it isn't like your normal video's but it was still really good. It was good in a different matter, it was honest. I think most of us don't know how difficult it is to be a youtuber. It just seems amazing etc. but it's actually hard work. And that is exactly what you showed us today: a day of honest hard work. I really appreciate what you are doing! With this youtube channel but also with the amazing podcast series of behind the glass. The drive home from work on thursday is so much better while listening to BTG. Also sundays are a great day usually because of your new vids. Test drive month is amazing so far!
Good to hear the efforts and frustrations of making a video. I certainly hadn’t realised that much work is required. I also like the fact that your trousers are the exact colour match to the gate you’re parked next to 😂. Keep up the good work.
Sam, I watch the content for you mate. I ADORE your cinematics! They wow me every time! And it baffles me that you put as much effort as you do into getting these incredible shots! But we’re all human, we understand that it’s not ALWAYS possible. So as a struggling youtuber I completely understand your frustrations because I’m too harsh on myself too! But I watch your videos to hear your opinion on the car, and continue to watch it to see your personality shine on camera! I’m sorry that’s so cheesy, but I genuinely enjoy your videos just because it’s you 👍🏻 Don’t be too hard on yourself mate, it’s unnecessary stress 🤷🏻♂️ you’re doing great 😁👍🏻
Yeah.. We all have crap days where nothing works out even close to the way we hope for. ..but the end result in this case is a good look into what the Toyota GR86 is all about. You did good, despite the challenges. The car: I absolutely love the idea of this little one, could easily live with the looks and the interior, think the (sticker)price is spot on, but i HATE how that engine sounds in the cabin. Hate it enough to get annoyed within the first minute of watching you drive it. For that reason i can't see it being for me, but i give Toyota a standing ovation, and a lot of love, for bringing it to market.
First time, American, viewer and despite having acknowledged the right side vs left side driving position at the beginning, I had a "oh shit, that's right" moment when I saw you pulling up to that intersection at about 10:21 and saw the bus swing wide INTO the RIGHT lane Was thinking to myself at first "Oh so NOW you get in the right lane- OH WAIT!" Cheers man, enjoying the video so far!
Great video Sam.. I pick up my new GRGTS next month here in Australia A$50k (£27,000) on the road & plenty to be had although with a bit of a wait. Such a shame that the UK is limited to 400 cars as they are such fun to drive, especially around the Cotswolds where you are & I am originally from.. 😀Love your work!
I would watch every video you put out regardless as I know how hard you try to produce the best content you can and appreciate how difficult it must be . Your my favourite channel bar none and I'm 58 this year , even bought a car from Tony lol ... Try not to beat yourself up too much we all know how much effort you always put in - keep up the great work .
Sam, content is fabulous. And we are more than happy to see down to earth vids aswell as the awesome ones. They are all great. You do a great job. Thank you for all you do. Make my week slightly better!
A well sorted slower car has got way more scope for fun than their super fast counterparts on public roads. Not much chance of new slower sports cars though thanks to development costs and electrification but some older cars may well be worth revisiting. Are any of them still cheap?
GREAT video! one of my more favourites of your recents. after the annoying start it looks like you were actually enjoying it rather than just having to make a video
I’ve always been adamant that you don’t need to have that perfect combo of RWD + manual + light + cheap and simple to have fun in a performance car. I hate it when journalists and other car lovers drive that agenda home and conclude that any car that doesn’t have all those is rubbish and manufacturers hate people like us. That said, really impressed by that little car, great package for the money.
Love the video, I was lucky enough to get an order in & completed 7mins after the order books opened. It was delivered in December after a long wait and love it! It reminds me of my greatly missed series 1 Lotus Elise I had for a couple of years over 20 years ago, but had to sell to put towards a house purchase. The GR86 is all about ‘the feel’ & ‘fun’. It is the perfect compliment to my 2nd car, a R35 GT-R which I’ve owned for 10 years and would struggle to ever part with. A working man’s supercar… but stretching its legs on the roads is license worrying! Not so in the little old GR 😊
Interesting point about UK roads and traffic. I had an mr2 Spyder. Not a fast car by any means but whenever I'd take it out for a spirited drive I'd end up frustrated and stuck behind traffic. My only answer was that you'd have to get up super early or go out during the working week. Neither of which I could be bothered/was able to do. I've often contemplated getting something faster but I feel the allure/dream of owning a sports car in the UK doesn't align with the reality.
The U.K. is overpopulated sadly. France has double the landmass with roughly the same population. It’s no wonder we’re so congested on the roads unfortunately.
@@sceett good point. One plus is that cars are really competitively priced in the UK compared to elsewhere but the congestion is a massive downside. I do daydream about getting another sports car but unless I get into track days the reality is that it probably isn't worth it for the majority of the time I spend on the road.
WHAT A CAR & WHAT A VIDEO SAM!! And under those horrific weather and traffic conditions, I gotta give it to you mate, you’re dedicated to the cause and we thank you for that! Tell tony he’s a legend aswell! 🫡🤌🤣💯👏👏🙏👌
This guy brings tonnes of amazing videos and then worries when one isn't 100% up to his standard. Either way, I enjoyed it like I enjoy all your other videos.
Hi Sam. I’m in Australia, the GT86 (old model) is pretty common. My thought is that they are a modern Datsun 240z. A good, fun car that if you hold it long enough it will not only be a classic but also fetch a tidy sum when you sell it. Great video also. I really enjoy most of your videos and your podcasts with Tony. Hoping to see you on your Australian visit. Please come to Melbourne. I saw your little dog pop up a few times which is very cute. Regarding content. As an owner of a Nissan 370z, similar type car to the 86, I really enjoy watching you test these more affordable cars. Driving a three pedal car with pretty basic options is still a lot of fun. With most roads in Melbourne having very low speed limits (40-80km) it’s not very conducive to owning a fast car.
Agree. I have a '17 BRZ. Hoping to purchase another or an 86 in a few years when the last boxer engines are rolling out before it becomes some electric bull shit. Hope to keep them both for years as a collector.
Thanks for the insight of the real first two mins. Its what Ive experienced myself but only get to see the final polished videos you put out. thanks for sharing and keep them ccoming
Lightweight cars with strong engines with as little plastic parts in the engine bay as possible are a good thing. If royal mail werent so greedy i would of bought one of the previous models as a daily.
What a great little sports car, your right, its the simple recipe light weight small power and cheap enough that if you put it in a hedge backwards you won't loose your house which means you drive it harder more of the time and enjoy it, it's almost come full circle from the 80s and 90s where hot hatches had this recipe and pushed out the tired old British sports car
As someone who owned a brz 2018TS it’s a amazingly fun car. I was on the order list for the second Gen and even got to try one and the power increase was noticeable and tuning was their but compared to a lot of other cars on the market without a turbo it just never gave most ppl The power they wanted. Sure would Increase the price and change the weight/ dynamic of the car but most ppl would Glady pay for it . I’m a lot happier I went with a 22 Veloster N DCT but if Toyota ever went with the GR powerplant of the Corollagr in a 86 platform I’d buy it in a heartbeat
Current 2017 GT86 owner really wish could get hold of a GR86, as would be another choice on top of GR Supra for my next car. Nice to hear you enjoyed the car, imagine it is quite special. Glad you managed to get some nice shots in the end Sam, cannot imagine how difficult that is.
Great video Sam, despite your troubles this has come out top quality as ever! You really need to do a video behind an ND2 MX5 RF the 2.0 with 184hp as a comparison, id be super keen to hear your opinion on the mighty Mazda!
Owned the Mazda prior to swapping it for a 2022 BRZ. Both great cars and really hard to choose between. The BRZ is a bit more “serious” out of the box. It’s great on track even stock. The Mazda is a bit too soft for track work although it’s a brilliant backroad car (and maybe more fun than the BRZ on a bumpy narrow B road). The Mazda feels torquier than the BRZ even though it’s not. The performance though, is not poles apart. Where the Mazda has it beat is low speed fun, the Mazda’s a hoot at 5/10ths (but gets a bit ragged at 9/10ths), and fuel efficiency (it’s really economical and the BRZ really isn’t). The BRZ is better composed the harder you push it but a bit of a yawn until you are leaning on it. And the BRZ murders the Mazda for practicality. You could have one as your only car. The Mazda is a toy and would be very difficult to live with as your only car. You can’t really make a bad choice here though.

Your editing is amazing, but that's the last reason, so thank you for your intro, but it's not a bother. I worked in the UK, so It's still relatable about the roads, and here in Canada we do have a few roundabouts.
Two things
1) Your videos are fantastic and I love the attention to detail that you put into each of the videos.
@@Picketfencespence Thanks for the feedback! got some thinking to do now.. see which one I end up going for
The opening of video was awesome, so we can appreciate just how much effort you put into your mega content!!! It’s not unnoticed mate!!! Love the GR86!!!
Great video!
One of the finest british car youtubers. Quality content. Behind the Glass is absolutely fab also. Keep up the good work!😀
Good one Sam, much appreciate your honest talk. Cool to see you took Twiggy along for the drive and in the end, you got there✌
Just a note, has the Dacia Spring landed on the British shores? Perhaps suitable for a next episode of getting coffee in a new car.
Paul, Tony, and yourself off to somewhere nice. As always, thank you, keep at it please, 600K YT subscribers is on the horizon 📈
Mx-5, Alpine A110, and this...each their own strong points, so happy time choosing!
I enjoyed the transparency here to be honest! We appreciate the work you put in 👊🏻
you are doing a great Job , it is an arduous task releasing great content every time. WELL DONE!!!
Probably one of the last proper sports cars.
Thanks for persevering sam! Great car!
21k miles on mine in one year, I’m still loving every second!
We appreciate the content you make dedication to what you do sometimes can make you doubt yourself & sometimes angry , so it’s fair to take your time enjoy what you’re doing & we will be patient & wait for the location’s & quality you provide…
Sometimes you have to compromise to deliver…
Thank you 🙏
Another road trip on a ferry wouldn’t go a mis either 👍👍🏁 cheers
I’m sorry that’s so cheesy, but I genuinely enjoy your videos just because it’s you 👍🏻
Don’t be too hard on yourself mate, it’s unnecessary stress 🤷🏻♂️ you’re doing great 😁👍🏻
Love the review, great car, perfect for British roads. What you fail to point out is that you’re wearing a damn cool watch….got one too.
nice to see twiggy have a slight cameo in the videos again
Thanks for the video. I am waiting for my GR86 here in Bahrain for 8 months after booking it in November 2022. Cant wait to get my hands on one.
You can unplug / get that sound turned off.
First time, American, viewer and despite having acknowledged the right side vs left side driving position at the beginning, I had a "oh shit, that's right" moment when I saw you pulling up to that intersection at about 10:21 and saw the bus swing wide INTO the RIGHT lane
Was thinking to myself at first "Oh so NOW you get in the right lane- OH WAIT!"
Cheers man, enjoying the video so far!
Excellent as usual. Don't worry about what you can't control. Your efforts always show through in your videos.
Same here in western parts of germany. If you want empty roads, get up early or drive while the national soccer team is competing
Spot on,I've mk1 mx5,same problem held up everywhere apart from runs out into the Peaks, and that as to be early in the morning at weekends.
One of your best, please carry on.... you can't be beaten if you don't give up.
Sam, any content from you is better than none at all. And remember: perfect is the enemy of good
Love the fantastic the beginning ! Gives us followers a real life view on how hard it can be to produce 5 star content like you, do !
the road to Kemble from cirencester has just been resurfaced and is nice and smooth now....
Toyota make amazing cars, I recently tested a new RAV4 it was brilliant I wasn’t expecting it to be so good. Up to 10 year warranty says it all.
Awesome little Co-Pilot 🐕❤
Love Toyota for bringing these cool cars back
Glad this one saw the light of day! Top notch as always Sam. Keeping my eyes peeled for when those live podcast tickets drop!
70k miles on mine already! Been loving it
Lightweight cars with strong engines with as little plastic parts in the engine bay as possible are a good thing. If royal mail werent so greedy i would of bought one of the previous models as a daily.
Love the content and you attention to detail - I mean, matching the colour of your trousers to the gate is granular detail to say the least!!
I really enjoy this review! The care I'm sure is great, but your dog is a star..
Toyota is the best reliable fun to drive vehicle in the world. Mine over 350,000 and still running like new except for one time absorber change.
Keep up the hard work, Sam. You’re the man!
The hype is real
Twiggie out here being the ultimate navigator. ✊🏻
Haha I love how the dog is so chill while you’re whipping that thing around. Great passenger 👍🏻
As someone who owned a brz 2018TS it’s a amazingly fun car. I was on the order list for the second Gen and even got to try one and the power increase was noticeable and tuning was their but compared to a lot of other cars on the market without a turbo it just never gave most ppl
The power they wanted. Sure would
Increase the price and change the weight/ dynamic of the car but most ppl would Glady pay for it .
8:40 I love that you brought Twiggy! I bring my dog Penny on most of my drives! ❤️ 🐕
Your idea of a 'flapper' is still so well put togteher. It's remarkable that a 'one man band' can make such quality content.
Always Enjoy Everything You Produce Sam .... don't be hard on yourself
