  • Having just fitted new Michelin PS4S N0 tyres on my Porsche Cayman 981 GT4, now was the perfect time to get a four wheel alignment done. No point ruining a new set of tyres with uneven wear due to poor geometry.
Who better to do the wheel alignment than the good folks at ‪@centergravitychassistuning‬. Having done such a good job on my Porsche Cayman 987.2 I gave them the job of working on my Porsche Cayman 981 GT4.
I thought there was nothing wrong with the existing setup… boy was I in for a surprise. Watch part 1 of this video series for further details.

Had my car done initially by Chris for a strange knocking noise which he identified as several nuts and bolts not torqued correctly. No more knocking noise. Returned a few months later for geometry. Pete took the car to another level of fun and e enjoyment. The car now feels sharper but with that it became easier more relaxed. Now i can enjoy. From booking in my car for its inspection initially to the final visit for geometry the whole process was fantastic, Holly, Chris and Pete made it feel more like a day out a d a visit to meet up with old friends. I wish them well for the future it makes all the diffrence when people gave good social skills and you can meet the people doing the work. Porsche service could learn a lot from center gravity work ethics.
    Thanks again

For sure. It’s easy for a shop to take your money. It’s super hard to make the customer feel like they are getting everything they are paying for and then some. We’re humans end of the day. Social creatures. OPC just want the invoice paid and move onto the next customer…

Wow. The way he was describing the handling characteristics made it sound like the car was borderline dangerous!
You probably don't want to name the company who did the previous recent 'alignment', (I'm wondering if it was an OPC, just imagine how many cars they've ruined!) but this video has brought home to me the importance of not just going anywhere to have a wheel alignment but make sure it's a decent place with a good reputation.
Looking forward to parts 2 and 3.

Very interesting, never even thought about the level of the ramp, obvious when you think about it.

Crazy to think the car wasn’t 100% all this time but good thing it’s been fixed! Gorgeous color btw. Best color 981 GT4 I’ve seen

Unless you have driven many cars on the same road in the same conditions, it’s hard to know how a car should be handling. You need to be able to find roads where you can effectively LET GO of the steering wheel and see where the car wants to go. I don’t really take my hands off the steering wheel… so the issue was masked by me holding the wheel steady mitigating the uneven forces going through the suspension. Full disclosure I did feel like a complete idiot driver to not be able to call the steering out as sub-optimal…

Car was purchased more due to the colour than the fact it was a GT4. There were plenty of GT4s on the market when I bought this car, only one is Voodoo Blue

I definitely a 981/gt4 with such geometry for my twisty roads

My 997 is doing exactly this after putting pss10s on. I've had the shop align it twice. I suppose it's time to find a new shop with a calibrated ramp!

Well, I don't think that camber contributed to the issue that car wanted to pull to the right, it was the rear toe messed up and produced the issue. Front wheels are not connected to powertrain and even if you put different size of wheel (forget about rotation mass) it won't make the car pull to right or left as long as wheel is straight. Also 50' difference in camber is totally fine, having you sit on the car vs empty car it creates like 10-20' camber difference on softer suspension.
You had rear toe in (positive toe) and left rear is pointing more to right side by 10', it is a lot of toe difference between 2 wheels that you can obviously feel the car pulling right.
For leveling, I also don't feel the mark on lifting arm would tell the leveling in precise, what if your tire wear left and right is different? What if the wheel base the car sitting on is worn over years and have different thickness left and right? If I were to design alignment machine, I would use the laser device mounted on the wheel which is centered to the axle as a baseline and compensate the calibration based on how that is measured.

Judging by the tech's description of the handling problems, I'm somewhat incredulous that the owner did not pick up on even one of these things early-on. I notice the most minor pulling to one side, no matter how subtle. If I owned a GT4, I would be very in tune with the car. I am in the process of buying a Cayman/718 and hope to become familiar with the car's quirks and feel on the road soon after purchase. I also am surprised that the position of those bolts on the strut tower, not symmetrical with the other side, would have much to do with the alignment. Are the suspension components on both sides exactly the same, regardless of what other mechanisms might be on one side? I built race cars at one time and found this questionable.
