I like your method of tapping the seal into place...brilliant! Once again shows the nearly infinite uses of electrical tape, which is why I always carry a roll with me when out for a ride.
Try a 'sealmate' to see if it fixes the leak before tearing the fork down. I made my own using a plastic jug. Worked for me, saved a lot of time & $$$ in new seals. ;)

I case you don't know, you only have a spring in one leg. RaceTech makes a kit that puts a spring in the other leg. It runs about $100 and it helps stiffen your suspension. It kinda depends on what you consider expensive. You can get the RaceTech spring kit from crfsonly.com. There are also videos on UA-cam that cover the installation of that spring kit.

Meaning that it's not necessarily an "over and over" scenario, and might just be a "once every several years" scenario. In which case, it's really not worth buying a tool when a few rounds of electrical tape works just as well.
