All the guys bitching about what he said is hilarious, he is exactly right. Watch his videos, he points out any flaws on any brand and he is right 90% of the time.
Got a 2000 Chevy 2500 with a 6.0 vortec been the best purchase ever. 250k miles and only ever needed a starter and a fuel pump. Been the best vehicle I’ve ever owned.
And the tailgate cables. I'd replace the cables on the first day if I were to buy one. If the cables break and you have a load on the gate it would crease it against the bumper, thus screwing up the gate forever.
Richard DeRiso when you load them up with junk and try to close the tailgate they bend and the cheap plastic handles break off. There good only man trucks but not good for work...
Just bought an 02 Silverado 4.8 extended cab long bed. I personally never thought I’d by a Chevy, considering I owned 2 mopars before that, but I surprisingly can say the Chevy is the best truck I’ve ever had. I’ve driven a handful of fords and dodges but this Silverado is just a smile on my face everyday. I ragged on them for years and now I see why everyone loves them
Yeah, I was a solid Chevy guy cuz my dad had a 98 1500 w a 350, & his current 04 GMC Yukon. It’s a nice vehicle, but it gets 13mpg. I was a chevy/GM guy until I got a 95 7.3PSD as a first car. Did some minor power mods, exhaust & new sensors/new wearable parts. Had a lot of fun with it. I drove it for a year & then got tired of the auto, & all the computers, so I sold it & got a 93 idi w a ZF5. Oh yeah & the 95 had weak injectors & needed a head gasket. I love running my idi on waste oil & ive done most of the updates & coolant additives.
I have been a Gm parts counter man for 23 years These were very good trucks what i used to see the most was the fuel pumps when we started getting more ethanol in the fuel they were going out like crazy the i shaft in the column was big ,oil pump failure after they get old ,seat bases were cracking on our large bretheren ,lets not forget the window regulator those cables would fray....and cables on the end gate latch would bust...the instrument cluster that was big, water pumps and fan clutches too the tail gate handle bezels will fall off the yokes on the rear end leak around the seal ...the center console lid will break for sure master switches and seat recliner levers, cracking dashes, the clips on the tailgate handle the green and the red both crack catalytic converters were going out for a while..and another biggie is the blend door actuators in the dash those will go bad...but really these trucks were very good most of that stuff is normal wear and tear
Daniel Relph I don’t consider all of that stuff ‘normal’ wear and tear. It’s more that an annoyance when interior stuff like seat bases, consoles, dash cracking, instrument cluster failures, etc. go bad on a $40-60 thousand dollar vehicle, even past 100k. That’s just cheap parts sourcing and GM bean counters of the era f’ing s**t up. The drive trains are bulletproof for the most part if properly maintained. Rust can be and is an issue if not properly addressed with an aftermarket rust proofing, like Krown, or similar.
The 99 and 2000 model of Silverado and Sierra had both an iron block and heads. That makes them a super durable setup and has done wonders for me. Lq4’s are awesome!
I’m buying a 2001 I researched that engine and from what I read this was gm best yr because the reliability of this engine! It sold the truck to me! I drove 2 fords and did not run was something wrong with both them! This one runs like a dream!
It's funny how you said "if it was built on a Monday vs Wednesday " that's so true. I work at the peterbilt plant In Denton tx. If the guys are pissed or had a heavy weekend. Things tend to show that on the quality.
I come from Texas (thankfully rust is not a common issue in the south), I personally don't care for cosmetics, I bought my 2006 Chevy Silverado because of its longevity in the powertrain, and it has been a fantastic truck overall.
Grayson Reichert same. im from texas, and bought a 99 sierra because it was comfortable, cheap, can tow a car, and i knew itd never leave me on the side of the road.
I bought a 00' escalade that came from texas. dont know how it came to be in montana, but I bought it because it had no rust. .... now if the front diff would lock in, and the oil pressure guage would stop twitching I would be delighted with it!
Thanks for the video, great job! I got a 4.3L 2003 Sierra with 194K miles on it, I live in Georgia, it is still almost perfect. What a great truck, I paid $15,600.00 in 2003.
Don't forget the cheap interior paint, where it chips off if you touch it more than a dozen times. This can be witnessed around the radio control knobs
Mikey Mulhearn. common GM issue at the time, its funny to look inside a Pontiac Vibe and see the GM radio compared to the Toyota HVAC and other switch gear. not only are theu obviously from different manufacturers but the radio is usually missing so much paint you can see through the knobs. not that Im a toyota fan boy, they tend to look and feel cheap but unlike some other manufacturers they dont tend to go down hill from there.
My first vehicle was a 96 yukon with 200k+ miles on it, no problems at all. My second vehicle was a 03 tahoe with 360k+ miles on it, no problems. Now I have a 07 yukon with 135k miles on it, no problems. Long story short vortec engines are some of the best ever created!
I had an 03 avalanche and put 260000km on it with a single issue. Then I got a 08 Yukon Denali and put 292000 km on it with only two problems. A bad wire from the gas pedal to the throttle and a second bad wire for the transmission. I now have a 17 Yukon denali with 44000 km and zero issues.
@@alisaleh2509 it's common, it's lifter or rocker tick. Caused by gunk in motor causing oil not to get to certain areas. I have a 6.0 also, it ticked at idle also drove me nuts so I researched. Pour in some sea foam drive it for a day or two then change the oil. I had to this twice to get it to go away, it's been gone now for over 20k miles. And I run full synthetic high mileage. Now have 163k miles on the lq4
ABS pump, blower motor resistor, tcase pinhole leak, fuel pumps, 4l60e sunshell gear stripping, intake gaskets. I'm sure I am missing something, but I have 240k on my 99 and it has been the best truck I've ever owned. I live in Idaho, so not one spot of rust. You guys in the rustbelt need to sue your local government over using salt on the roads. We use a liquid here (can't remember the name) and sand. Works like a charm, and our cars dont rust.
Ontario has massive salt mines, they love to coat the roads up here and they put down some sort of liquid brine before the snow starts and then they start the salt trucks rolling.
I bought my 2004 Silverado 1500 extended cab with 5.3 liter. 16 years later at 94,000 still running great. Usual service and reapair. Ordered my 3rd instrument cluster because transmission indicator dim.
My first Truck was a 2002 Tahoe with the 4.8 bought it as a birthday gift to myself. Fast forward to today 15 years later, she is still with me, pushing strong original engine and transmission. Added 3 more of these gmt800s to my collection best dam trucks on the road.
Good video! Thanks for taking the time for this! I am currently restoring my fathers 1999 GMC Sierra 1500 reg cab 5.3L. Everything you mentioned in this video is what has, at one time or another gone wrong with this truck. The break lines blew twice, and the rust is unbelievable. Had no emerg break either as the cables rusted through. One of my interior rockers were completely gone and the rest of the rockers were almost gone. Big hole in fender under fuze box, and the 8ft box was completely unsafe to drive with the truck after 19 years of Canadian salt. There is a new box on it now & all the rust will be gone with new steel fenders, rockers and paint. This truck is going to last me atleast another 20 years from now!
I’m in Vermont w/ a 2000 Sierra 1500 & it’s has been super reliable& STILL pretty rust free. Undercoating certainly helped as well as rear wheel well liners from LMC Truck. LMC has been a really great resource!
Well I can live with some cosmetics and easy stuff to fix as long as I got a good engine and drivetrain! Getting parts is super easy, too. 2005 GMC 2500HD
@@twanttwtcc3804You got lucky. Four wheel drive is a must, even if you live in Florida. Try backing up to hook up your camper at the campground and you will keep falling into your ruts without 4wd.
I have a 2004 GMC Sierra 4x4 slt. 350k miles on it. original 5.3 engine and transmission. no ticks or knocks on cold start. best era to buy a gm truck only because best era for the v8s offered for any trim gm truck. all interior features work including cruise control. bought it for $1500 with 330k on it. love my truck. ps its the extended cab.
My 2001 Z71 has 407,000 kms, (4.8 liter)and it still runs awesome. Undercoating it yearly has kept it from rotting a slow death. There is a bit of slop in the drive train, and is still my daily driver.
The 5.4 was used by koenigsegg and the ford 5.4 gt. It's also available in the dually f350. The reason they fail is because they are actually used unlike the vortecs. I haven't seen a 5.3 in a 3500hd Silverado or in a dually. The transmissions mated to the 5.3 will blow up within 100k. The triton engines are amongst the hardest working engines ever built. They fail around 350k-1m miles and the triton 6.8 which is just a 5.4 with 2 extra cylinders is used in the f750 so to say they are a bad engine is just stupid. It certainly is not perfect but sit the obvious choice if you will be doing any type of work with your truck
5.4 in the ford GT is not the same as in the trucks, its a DOHC 32v 5.4, based off the 03/04 Cobra, but with more displacement. The truck engines are nowhere near the quality of the DOHC ones.
+97taurusSHO they share the same design. The truck engines are not perfect but they sure are better than the competition. The modular engine came out in 1996 cross-threatens mains and deep skirts. The ls came out in 1998 totally ripping off its block design. Idk what people expect from the 5.4. It does everything it's supposed to do. I have beaten a Cummings 5.9 in a 5.4 triton I trust it with my life idk how it can get any better than that honesty. Idk what you guys use your trucks for but mine works and it puts other trucks including diesels to shame idk what people want honestly
My Duramax LB7 dropped a valve a few months ago. Spent the last couple months rebuilding it almost completely. As of yesterday it roared to life again after a completely disassembly, very proud of my literal home garage built Duramax
I bought a used 05 with all the minor known issues. I’ve got everything fixed finally, besides the bad airbag sensor (I’m assuming). It’s pretty satisfying to own these trucks you get all these small problems repaired.
I’m currently going through the TLC process with mine. ‘06 Sierra 1500 Z71 w/ a 5.3 and 317,000 miles. it could use a new top end, it’s got that lifter tick you hear on a lot of these trucks, it goes away after the first 5-6 miles though. the bottom end of the engine still runs great. Would it be worth working on this engine or should I explore junkyards? I’ve done front brake rotors, calipers, and pads. Valve-stem seals. Driver side valve cover (pcv valve) and PCV hose. Knock sensors. Intake mani. gasket. Valley cover gasket. Valve cover gaskets.
March of 2023 I bought my 2004 Silverado 2500 6.0 crew cab with 141k miles on it. Completely rust free California truck but the roof and hood had some paint issues. I've already addressed a few of these issues on it that he described in the video. Knock sensors are another one. I most recently had a body shop repaint the roof and hood. It seems like its going to be super reliable as I've seen other 6.0 Vortec trucks go over 500k miles.
My 01 Yukon has 311,000miles on it. I can't complain only have had to do minor things like fuel pump, a couple coil packs, passenger side wheel hub and regular maintenance. Engine still as strong as when I bought it with 94,000 on it. Oh mine also has the autoride and I had to put a new compressor on it.
Dodge2017 ... Yeah I would definitely go look at it. Check the brake lines, Chevy/GMC are terrible you will be driving and go to hit the brakes and they go to the floor. They are notorious for going out if you live in the salt belt other than that just check your normal things and give it a good test drive. I actually was a import guy but my family is Chevy all the way. My brother talked me into buying my Yukon in 2009 with 94000 miles and I never dreamed it would last this long and the motor (5.3) is still as strong as the day i bought it. Good luck bud
Great video. I just purchased a 2004 Silverado. Love It! I have experienced most of the issues you mentioned. To me those are minor problems with the exception of rust. Thank goodness mine was garage kept and super clean. I plan on keeping this rig for as long as she lives and then some. Thank you for making this video it is important to point these issues out because they are fixable. Even the steering colum has aftermarket versions that claim to eliminate the rattle. Looking forward to many more informative videos. Keep up the good work.
Rear knock sensor usually goes out from moisture getting trapped under the rubber boot on the harness. Rear tailgate handle bezel and handle break often. The cab hinges bend easily and are welded to the cab so in order to replace them you have to cut them off and drill holes to mount new ones. Front end parts wear faster too but they ride amazing
I have the tailgate handle and bezel issue. I've only replaced the handle once, but countless bezels. Found them at JC Whitney for $7. I buy a couple at a time. LOL
My wife still drives her 1999 suburban everyday , and we live in Michigan. I have oiled the frame every year , and get it washed every week in the winter. The only thing we have done to it it was the button for the 4 wheel drive went out a few years age . I went to the junkyard put that one in , and has worked every time.
our 99 chevy express van had the older vortec 305 (gen 1 style block) and it managed to get 20mpg highway ,really good for a full size van that weighs over 5000lbs. the 305 only had 225hp but seemed to have plenty of torque ,we had it full to the brim with wet fire wood and drove up crazy steep NC mountains and it didn't even kick down into a lower gear. What more could we ask for? 20mpg, overloaded and it powered right up mountain back roads, i call that good enough.
everyone I ever known that had this style of truck ran forever, my dad, uncle all my friends they only ever complained about the small stuff not lasting overall if you want a truck that will last forever these are a good choice
I agree these were the last true work trucks that gm ever made. No touch screen, no internet. Hard plastic dash, 40-20-40 split bench. The ls engines last forever and with the tow package the 4l60e isn't bad.
@@daltonbrink6336Only thing decent is the engine. Rest is junk. All I do is put money in mine while it rusts to the ground no matter what I do. Tired of working on the sum bitch lmao
@Furn333 Yeah the frames are known to break on the 1500's right before the rear axle. Friend had to weld plate to his also the crossmembers under the bed rot out
I bought a 06 GMC Sierra SLE 1 4x4 Crew Cab, full towing, off road, nevada package with 75,000! miles for $15,000 there were some minimal issues but man I love it and still going strong!
My coworker just paid $15,000 in 2021 for a 1999 Chevy 1500 4x4 with 75,000 original miles in mint condition. He said it was way cheaper than paying $70,000 for a brand new truck.
A 2002 8.1 Allison 2500HD gets the same fuel mileage as a 1988 3500 5.7L 4 speed manual. Both are extended cabs. When you need power, the 8.1 is awesome and engine braking is a plus with the 8.1. Compared to the other big block gas engines out there, the fuel mileage of the 8.1 is best in my opinion.
I love my 07 Silverado Classic my first ride. Been keeping up with maintenance, there's no rust. Truck has over 400,000 miles on it now recently put in a LS2 6.0. Best truck
Hey.. we bought a 2016 1500 Silverado based on YOUR recommendation The 6.2 liter engine hauls AZZ!!! The interior is nice and it drives like you're sitting on a couch..... plus so quiet. We got the LTZ edition. Thanks again for the recommendation. love your channel.... Merry Christmas.
Yeah, turning a key is a bitch. If you can't turn a key then you probably shouldn't buy a truck unless you have someone else to load and unload it for you. I bet opening the door is tough too.
REEF X mr Same. I love the 2018 models with the white or blue paint with the painted bumpers and grille. Sexy looking trucks. But the new 2019 Silverados are uglier than the shit I took an hour ago.
I have an 07 GMC Sierra classic SLT with 250,000km. I've had it since Feb 2010 it has been a very reliable truck. I've kept is undercoated so rust Isn't an issue, and i do live east coast Canada so same climate as you. I do however have the same steering clunk which I really only notice on the highway changing lanes. Thank you for letting me know the issue! I have also had issues with break lines until I replaced every single one on the truck with stainless 4 years ago, after chasing a few. They came pre bent and only cost $500 Canadian for all of them, best $500 I spent on the truck. The only complaint I have is the chrome door protectors are starting to bubble and I have the famous GM check engine light. and warns me to close my gas cap. I am told it is a small evap leak which does nothing but make the computer think the gas cap is open. so i bought a code reader to read and delete that code.I normally have to erase it 1-2 times per month. Bottom line is i cant complain about the 1st gen. I have had it for 9 years now and still love it. This truck owes me nothing, and I cant say that about any other vehicle I have ever owned. and as for fuel mileage I avg. 15.2L per 100km I would say that is pretty dam good for a 12 year old truck. not sure if you remember how bad the old S10 with a 4.3 was. I had 1 and that was a fuel eater. Half the truck for twice the fuel haha.
I daily drive an 05 with the 5.3 and you're spot on. The rear fender flares fell off cause of rust, frame is rusting and it leaks oil but runs like a clock. Only has 132k on it and i plan to drive it forever. Love these trucks
8.1 did last through the entire 1st gen run. If memory serves me right, the 03-07 was detuned a little versus the 01-02. It’s worth mentioning that the 8.1 was not an LS engine, as it was modeled after the 454 cubic inch. My dad had a 01 3500 with the 8.1. It was a great truck, but we lived in Washington state, so no salt on the road. The worst rust it had was limited to the undercarriage. Edit: I hate autocorrect.
Just bought 2003 1500 4x4 only 107k brought from my buddy original owner. I already fixed Guage cluster still some things here and there but at 107k I am in it for the long haul. 💪😎
Gmt800 is a good value. Yeah your going to have to fix things, fixing an old pos still cheaper then payments on a new pos. Plus I don't worry if someone hits it.
Had a 97 gmt800 z71 I fucking loved that truck. But they are just as bad maybe even worse when It comes to rust both my doors had rust on the front doors. You could stick your hand in it and unplug the door speakers
this is why i love my 2005 GMC Sierra. it was a custom built from the factory so it has features that not even my dad's 2006 has, like heated leather seats, six-cd changer and folding mirrors. he also has a 2011 and it just looks so weird with it's boxy exterior. it also doesn't ride as nice, while mine sits lower to the ground. since then i've upgraded the receiver, all the internal and external lights with white LEDS, , new headlights, tailights, third brakelight. installed a halo system and removed a bunch of the tacky chrome i got tired of seeing. i'm probably never gonna sell this thing and will probably turn it into a performance truck later on.
I love my '99 z71. The only issues that I've had with the truck has been finish and body rust. Other than replacing rocker panels and cab corners, the truck has been great.
I have a 2004 Silverado work truck 2500HD 4x4, now I have 848,565 on it, and it still looks pretty good, I will tell you I've put two other motor's in the truck, one had 100,000 when installed, the other a crated motor, changed both due to low oil pressure, which I found out later I could have a bad O ring in the oil pump causing it to suck air.
I bought a 2003 6.0L 2500HD when I was stationed in Alaska and still have it as my main farm truck on my farm in Missouri. It's towed a C-Dory, 24' Bayliner, equipment trailer with various tractors and other things. It has spent a good part of its life off road and has been from Prudhoe Bay on the north slope of Alaska to Panama City Florida. I initially had a problem with the push button 4wd selector not always engaging but it sorted itself out after the first year and no problems since. My drivers seat has a hole on the bolster like you said and my gauge cluster took a crap about 3 years ago so I bought a ScanGauge II and plugged it into my OBDII port and I just use that. I have had a persistent minor leak from my master cylinder and I am getting ready to replace the intermediate shaft but this is the first truck I have been completely satisfied with and still have no desire for a new one. My paint has held up well and I have almost no rust for some reason though I have been through several bumpers from them rusting out. Its been a great truck.
My buddy has tons of these trucks. He said he sends the dash cluster off the be rebuilt every once in a while. I think it is like $150 to have them rebuild it in the mail for you.
I have an 05’ Hummer H2 LQ4 Vortec 6.0, it has 140,000 and drives like a dream , but I have changed the knock sensors, throttle body gasket, valley pan gasket, intake manifold gasket , oil pressure sensor, vacuum hoses, updated valve covers with new gaskets and so on. Lots of maintenance and lots of maintenance to go ! Very reliable though .
Spot on. I have an '02 Sierra with a 6.0. Low mileage with a recent trans swap because a mechanic screwed up and fried it. It's my work horse and trailer hauler. Great truck!
I took out the cabin filters and somehow it got hung up on the blower motor resistor and snapped it clean off..... Off to eBay I went and $13 had me a brand new one with a lifetime warranty two screws and I'm good to go
Grand Negus, how so? I'm just genuinely curious. The TBI SBCs are one of the simplest EFI systems out there and there's very very minimal wiring in the entire truck. Only wiring issues I've ever had with my old 93 Silverado that used to be my daily driver for 10 years was a short here and there like the starter power wire melting and shorting out on the passenger side exhaust manifold for example. And now that I let it set up for the better part of two years and rebuilt the transmission recently and have began restoring it, the speedometer and voltmeter fluctuate but I know that'll clear up as I clean the grounds.
Backyardmech1, true. I recently purchased a set of good condition Vortec heads from a 98 to swap onto my 93's 350 with plans to run the GMPP TBI-compatible Vortec intake but my 2000 Sierra 2500 was ran into and totaled a couple months back and the 350 Vortec I purchased was ejected from the back of the Sierra and damaged the heads so I'm just using the 2000's powertrain to LS-swap the 93 instead of the Vortec head conversion.
deans2020 wiring goes bad some gauges dont work. I broke diff and trans, its not very comfortable it's at 210k miles but i dont want to get rid of it because it is so damn simple. Ive done everything except the trans myself
For owning a 4.8 litre, V-8, 2007, GMC Sierra Classic crew cab, oil change and maintenance every 3,000 miles and pulling a 6,500 lbs. camper twice a year. My opinion of this truck is awesome and very reliable. Gas mileage is outstanding (if not towing) and the towing capability is average on the highway (I usually don't exceed over 60 mph) as well as on hilly terrain. I'm from Alabama and we do most of our camping on the Florida Everglades. Thanks GM (Great Machine)!
I have an 03 Sierra I bought new , everything you mentioned in this video I have done to my truck. I have also replaced the left wheel hub twice and the right side once. I just had an issue with it not wanting to start after its ran for a while. It turned out to be the coolant sensor , the plug wires rusted off causing the computer to think the motor was running hot. Easy $30 fix.
@@ericbrenner690 Bought my 2000 Tacoma 4x4 brand new with auto trans, 2.7 liter 3RZFE engine and factory tow package ( front discs and over-sized rear drums ). It now has over 330,000 miles on it, and 75% of that mileage was either towing my single or tandem axle trailer for work, or my bass boat. I worked the snot out of this little truck and with dings & dents, it runs & drives as good as the day I drove it off the dealer's lot on all original engine & drive train, wheel bearings, CV joints, U-joints, AC compressor, starter, alternator, etc, etc......all still original. The ONLY things I've had to replace ( other than the usual belts, hoses, break pads/shoes, etc ) was 1 of the 2 coils, the radiator ( nobody makes a truly durable radiator anymore, due to plastic tops & bottoms ), exhaust manifold and leaky valve cover gasket/plug seals & driver's side outer door handle. And those parts only replaced once. That's it. NOT A RATTLE IN THIS TRUCK ANYWHERE. Even the auto trans still shifts perfectly.
I got a 2004 Silverado it has been a fantastic truck it has 300,000 miles on it replaced the starter and wiring harnesses and blow out the fuel solenoid that is it I love it.
Len M. I had a 93 6.2, thing had 5 hundred and some thousand kilos on it still going strong when I sold it except anything under -1 it wouldn't start without either. Sold it cause the tranny went and brake lines rusted out. Couldn't warrant spending that much on such a old worn out 2wd truck.
I've got an '84 6.2. Chevy K20 with every option and 700R4. No idea on mileage, either 140k or 240k. Much better than gas jobs of the era. Tons of power, averages 20mpg.
The gas engines of the mid 70's to 80's even 90's but the 1970's-1980's carburetors robbed power big time.....Swap that and the gas engines wake right up on those era trucks....I had a GMC 454 changed the carb added headers and it woke up,beat any diesel of that era..I even had a Dodge 150 with a 318 2bbl,swear it was a 1 bbl..I put a carb from a 68 Dodge and the thing gained 30 hp..it woke right up and was decent...
the only thing ive noticed on mine is that the lifters are really noisy, and they tick constantly. and the seats are destroyed, other than that there a great truck,
MotorsAndMore lol all right then. I actually got a long screw driver and listened to the valve cover and the fuel rail because people where telling me lifter problem lmao. That's when I started working on my own shit lol
My '04 Avalanche had the steering intermediate shaft changed under warranty. In 15 years, it's never gone bad again. I did change our the instrument cluster also. Zero rust issues in the Pacific northwest. No tailgate issues either. I use it for my remodeling business and tow a 5 to 7000 pound trailer regualarly. I was looking at new trucks recently, but decided to keep mine for 5 more years.
2003 chevy silverado here in texas...never done anything but tune ups tires and breaka...140k still running like a top. I love her. More loyal than any man.
@@westernstartruck2528, you do realize that these truck is over 15 years old. I do not think that Ford's new 5.0 will last that long. The coyote engines are crap, look it up. And do not get me started talking about the CRAP the triton 5.4 engines are.
Joe Pellish I’ve towed with gassers and with diesels. There’s a pass on my way home. Downshift on my truck and chug up it in 4th gear no problem. My truck broke down and I had to borrow my brothers gasser and I hit the start of the hill at 70 by the end Semis were passing me. I was down to about 40mph. The torque just isn’t there. It’s not good for highway hauling. Torque is LOOWWW. And it makes 325hp. My 6.2 Yukon makes 425hp
@@mr.lowslow7702 hook a trailer to the 8.1 and see how fast you can go up the pass. Now hook it to the 6.2 and do the same. No matter the outcome do it over and over again until one of the trucks is either worn out or one blows up. Bet the 6.2 blows up first from working at 5 grand for hours on end while the 8.1 is at a happy 3 grand and still going. And yes diesels will walk all over an 8.1. They have forced induction. Take the turbo off the diesel and see where your at. Better yet put the turbo on the 8.1. Then tell me how much power it has. This is like the Ecoboost vs gm 6.2 debate. It's totally worthless because both have turbos and the 8.1 and 6.2 do not. The 8.1 will Outlast that 6.2 pulling heavy Everytime.
Joe Pellish just gonna look at the numbers the 6.2 has more HP and more Torque. I’m sure that the 6.2 and the 8.1 will make it up the hill. Not as good as a diesel. Thats the only point I was trying to make.
You're totally right on this era of GM Trucks. Even up into the current era. One of the reasons I didn't buy a GM Truck again from the 2004 I had was the interiors. The 2004 was cheap, but damn I kept asking myself how much more can you guys take out of these things. Ended up buying a 2012 Ram Big Horn because of this. My parents actually have a 1999 Silverado and runs great, with 4.8. I want to add to your list....the window regulators on these years and on the 2003 to 2006 the HVAC Actuators in the dash.
I’ve got a 2003 Silverado and just replaced window regulators and now the tailgate won’t open! Aside from that, it’s a comfortable ride, has plenty of power and doesn’t mind towing a load!
Got mine brand new in 2002 been a great truck no problems still going strong just replaced the fuel pump one window motor that’s it almost 200000 miles
1999 Chevy Silverado Z71 Extended Cab with 248,572 miles on it and it's still running strong. I was suprized to learn it has a 4.10 rear end being a half ton but other than the cab rust, everything is decent and even the A/C still blows cold.
halfalanche I would like to know as well. I just bought the new shaft and, supposedly, better bushing and when I install it I would like to know where to put the fitting. Thanks.
Pull the mid shaft out. Separate the inner and outer shafts. Fill the outer shaft with silicone. The kind you use for showers, tubs, windows, etc. while it’s still wet, slide the inner shaft into the outer shaft. Reinstall. Let the silicone cure before using. Several hours or so. Drive until your hearts content. No more knocking steering shaft. The heat will not bother the silicone. The knocking steering shaft drove me crazy when I had my 01 z71. GM had a tsb back in the day. They did the same thing but with a thick grease. Would only last about a month.
Thats what Gm tried to tell us on a campaign but inevitably the I shaft must be replaced...the Tahoe's were the worst culprits....GM patrs man 23 years.
Great video, my dad has over 210k miles on his 2001 1500 sierra crew cab. But the number one issues he has to do every 5 years since he bought it new was replace a transmission. I think my dad's truck was built as an experiment at that time of the 1st generation GM trucks. But everything you stated is spot on just like my dads truck. Great truck versus the 5.4 F150 for sure.
At first I was slightly offended reading your headline, but then after watching I pretty much agree with you. I have the 1999 Silverado 5.3 Liter Vortec V8, which is essentially the GMC. I am the original owner, and still have mine, still driving in 2024, 410,000 miles, and the Engine is a reliable workhorse. I did change the oil faithfully myself, no synthetic ever, every 3,000. My Engine gets an A+. I do change the Spark plugs every 3 years because I want fresh clean plugs all the time, and boy does she peel out afterwards like new. The body parts... Yes, hood clear coat burnt off in the Texas Heat. Rust, I have the Fiberglass Step-side, so I already have a 50%edge there. The bottom of the door does have some. AC went out early, got replaced. The driver side window wire got frayed, and tangled early. Replaced that. On my second Alternator. On my 3rd Fuel Pump. (Changed that on the last by removing the bed, just 4 bolts, and two friends). Probably my fault for being poor, keeping the fuel low. Tailgate, you hit the nail on the head, but it works. Suicide 3rd Door plastic handle broke in half (the one on the open door edge).Replaced that. Water Pump failed, so I changed that myself. Had to remove a lot of plastic up front to get to it, but I got it done, and scraped the block face clean, before putting the gasket, and sealant. Still, like you said, aside from those items, the Engine is reliable. same Tranny too, no work ever done. I will say that I get great gas mileage, 2WD. I get about 24 mpg now on the hwy. Used to be about 28. It has lasted the lifetime of 5 vehicles, for that I am grateful to God for. I drove my baby Daughter home from the Hospital when it was brand new from the Dealer, 1999, and she is now going to be 25 this year. I would not trade my 1999 Chevy Silverado Truck for anything. The nice thing about this truck today, is that I can order practically every single replacement part online for the items mentioned, and do it myself, making it look brand new again. I left the AC up to the experts cause it was major work. Great job on your review.
Didn't see anyone mention anything on the water pumps. Water pumps are a common thing to fail/leak on the model year as well. Luckily it's pretty easy/cheap to replace (unless you accidently snap a bolt in the block like I did). Had a 05 sierra slt z71 5.3 with 210,xxx miles on it when I traded it in and I still miss it. I beat the piss out of it and only had a few issues but luckily I am mechanically inclined and was able to fix most of it myself. Loved how comfortable it was and how it felt driving it. Transfer cases on the 4x4s like to give some trouble once you get over 150,000 miles. Had pump rub issue causing pin hole leak and chain rubbed through making it noisey. Also abs/wheel hub problems will potentially arise. Had to change front driver side wheel hub, was throwing abs light.
Water pump was the first thing I thought of that wasn't mentioned, I agree it's an easy fix though but premature failure due to poor design. Seal leak on the rear of the pump
1999 gmc sierra. 425,000 miles original engine and transmission. lot's of towing. it is still running.

We still have my grandparents 2000 2500 with 94,000 original miles. Great truck!
Got 2001 2500 6.0 4×4 great truck. It is a gas hog though
Tailgate handle always breaks
And the tailgate cables. I'd replace the cables on the first day if I were to buy one. If the cables break and you have a load on the gate it would crease it against the bumper, thus screwing up the gate forever.
2002avy91 ya they love to break thank god my dodge has a metal tailgate handle.
gm replaced mine on a recall on my 00 silverado
Richard DeRiso the whole tailgate bends only letting one side latch. I'll stick with first gen dodges...
Richard DeRiso when you load them up with junk and try to close the tailgate they bend and the cheap plastic handles break off. There good only man trucks but not good for work...
The seats in the older GMs are so freaking comfy and soft. Feels like a cloud.
I consider myself a Chevy guy, but I pretty much only like the older Chevys.

Your not lying man lol everything you mentioned is true but dam. If I don't love my Chevy truck haha!!
Bondpit Yes but you’ll see this type of crap from all other brands.

Mag chloride? That's what we use in Colorado
Michigan,Wisconsin, and illinois are just terrible for vehicles.
Ontario has massive salt mines, they love to coat the roads up here and they put down some sort of liquid brine before the snow starts and then they start the salt trucks rolling.
That brine is worse than just regular salt, too. Trust me, the roads guys at my work put down loads of it...You can almost hear your vehicle rusting

Everything you mentioned in this video is what has, at one time or another gone wrong with this truck. The break lines blew twice, and the rust is unbelievable. Big hole in fender under fuze box, and the 8ft box was completely unsafe to drive with the truck after 19 years of Canadian salt.

There's far more things wrong with the 5.4 Triton
Greendude33 yes, there are lol
ua-cam.com/video/ijjkAlxzvOA/v-deo.html

So I’d be ok with a 180 k Sierra it’s got the 5.3 gonna go check it out next week

Friend had to weld plate to his also the crossmembers under the bed rot out
I agree with everything that was said I own a 2006 GMC and I'm love it
I bought a 06 GMC Sierra SLE 1 4x4 Crew Cab, full towing, off road, nevada package with 75,000! miles for $15,000 there were some minimal issues but man I love it and still going strong!
My coworker just paid $15,000 in 2021 for a 1999 Chevy 1500 4x4 with 75,000 original miles in mint condition. He said it was way cheaper than paying $70,000 for a brand new truck.
Thanks for the info. I have an 02 and have had a few problems. Bought it new and has been the best truck I have ever owned.
Great to hear. Merry Christmas! I'll take that case of beer if you are still offering! Good bottle of scotch will do too!
yes, I am still offering...... your advice got us a bad azz truck!.... contact me
Yeah, turning a key is a bitch. If you can't turn a key then you probably shouldn't buy a truck unless you have someone else to load and unload it for you. I bet opening the door is tough too.
Sounds like my dream truck
I just bought a 2001 Chevy. It had high mileage on it. I had to fix a lot of stuff, but it seems okay now.
I have a 2004 silverado 5.3 and I can honestly tell you guys it runs better then my 2017 traverse and it has 200k miles it's even quiter
Just bought 2003 1500 4x4 only 107k brought from my buddy original owner. I already fixed Guage cluster still some things here and there but at 107k I am in it for the long haul. 💪😎
Got a 2008 vortec 4.2 inline 6. Best engine I’ve ever owned hands down.
Now the electrical issues, that’s a whole other story but I love it
Gmt800 is a good value. Yeah your going to have to fix things, fixing an old pos still cheaper then payments on a new pos. Plus I don't worry if someone hits it.
Amen
I've had late model and old. Payments or not they all brake down...
If by "good value", you mean "worst trucks general motors ever made", then i agree!
My old 2000 Silverado 5.3 had 312K on it when I sold it great trucks
Everything he said literally happened to my truck
Haha me too! Everything except the rust but I live in Texas so that’s never really been an issue
Fuel pumps were crap and expensive. Door handles and tailgate handle breaking.
That damn tailgate latch always breaks an so does the that blower motor resistor
I've broke mine twice lol. I've got 400k+...I just stop it and she takes off every time. The longer I own my truck the more I love it lol
Stomp it lol &)
I took out the cabin filters and somehow it got hung up on the blower motor resistor and snapped it clean off..... Off to eBay I went and $13 had me a brand new one with a lifetime warranty two screws and I'm good to go
Just bought an 06 with 120k so far so good
88-98 review?
Justin Stafford Not to mention with TBI you can also get away with using different heads and cams to a certain degree without having to flash an ECM.
Backyardmech1, true. I recently purchased a set of good condition Vortec heads from a 98 to swap onto my 93's 350 with plans to run the GMPP TBI-compatible Vortec intake but my 2000 Sierra 2500 was ran into and totaled a couple months back and the 350 Vortec I purchased was ejected from the back of the Sierra and damaged the heads so I'm just using the 2000's powertrain to LS-swap the 93 instead of the Vortec head conversion.
deans2020 they rock. and in the rust belt, they rot. I have 225k m on my 98, my dad put 340k m on his 91
deans2020 wiring goes bad some gauges dont work.
Thanks GM (Great Machine)!
l love my '05 4.8L. I do have the steering column clunk noise, but the truck is super comfortable and durable.
There's a plastic piece under the steering wheel that wears out and causes the clunk. It's a cheap part, but it's a PITA to replace of course.
I’ve had mine for 17 years and I’m scared because I haven’t ran into any problems yet with my truck
How is it doing now lol?
i love how when you start comparing GMS the only thing you can really talk bad about it is engine wise i love it GM are the way to go
Proud owner of an absolute rust bucket 05 5.3. Things an absolute tank but everything this man has said is extremely true.
Easy $30 fix.
my 00 excab 2wd has 400 000km on a 4.8 bare bones truck but a/c blows cold most dependable truck out there by far
still like the 4.8? what MPG do you average?
1999-2006.5 GMT800 are my favorite years of GM trucks...
You forgot the crappy front wheel bearings on the four wheel drives. I have seen these fail in under 40000 miles.
@Furqan I had a 2000 S10 that ate through them every 10K.
I own a 2007 GMC Sierra with 350,000 miles original everything including the alternator. She’s been loyal and I love her to death!!
82ish 6.2L Diesel trucks seemed to last forever. Those were great trucks.
Len M. Xsa
Len M. had a 6.5 suburban that had 550xxx km on it when I sold it. have a 6.5 Sierra now with 370. just gotta make sure to plug em in below -10
I've got an '84 6.2. Chevy K20 with every option and 700R4. No idea on mileage, either 140k or 240k.
Much better than gas jobs of the era. Tons of power, averages 20mpg.
The gas engines of the mid 70's to 80's even 90's but the 1970's-1980's carburetors robbed power big time.....Swap that and the gas engines wake right up on those era trucks....I had a GMC 454 changed the carb added headers and it woke up,beat any diesel of that era..I even had a Dodge 150 with a 318 2bbl,swear it was a 1 bbl..I put a carb from a 68 Dodge and the thing gained 30 hp..it woke right up and was decent...
the only thing ive noticed on mine is that the lifters are really noisy, and they tick constantly. and the seats are destroyed, other than that there a great truck,
It's not the lifters. It's the injectors on the fuel rail or if it does it only in the mourning until warm, it's broken exhaust manifold bolts
james dean No its the lifters, because ive put new lifters in another truck and the problem is gone.
MotorsAndMore lol all right then. I actually got a long screw driver and listened to the valve cover and the fuel rail because people where telling me lifter problem lmao. That's when I started working on my own shit lol
I'd take lifter or piston slap noise over any of the 5.4's issues!!!
hochhaul True!
4:17 : II CONCUR !!! Well played Sir, well played indeed.
I love her. More loyal than any man.
stuff wrong with the LS engine?? BLASPHEMY
🤣🤣🤣
I believe that the ls is overrated
i take the 5.0 coyote 10x before this pos gm
@@westernstartruck2528 They're both great engines IMO
@@westernstartruck2528, you do realize that these truck is over 15 years old. I do not think that Ford's new 5.0 will last that long. The coyote engines are crap, look it up. And do not get me started talking about the CRAP the triton 5.4 engines are.
The 8.1l engine is great!
I made up my mind to never get rid of mine since they don't make them anymore.
I agree. Anyone who disagrees has never pulled with one and is sucking diesels dick
Darth Mall my 04 has none of these issues with 244,000 miles. Great trucks
I’ve got a 2003 Silverado and just replaced window regulators and now the tailgate won’t open! Aside from that, it’s a comfortable ride, has plenty of power and doesn’t mind towing a load!
Post-bailout GM interiors have made a BIG improvement. Modern Silverado's have great interiors, especially the LTZ's.
To fix the steering shaft problem install a grease fitting and grease it every service . Never clunk again
I would like to know where to put the fitting. Mine has been clunking 9 years and it still drives me nuts.
halfalanche I would like to know as well.
Thats what Gm tried to tell us on a campaign but inevitably the I shaft
must be replaced...the Tahoe's were the worst culprits....GM patrs man 23 years.
Mid shaft was the problem. Mine was fixed by the dealer for free. It was a recall
You should do a video on the gmt400 (Silverado 89-98)
No talking of the mighty 4.3 and the 5 speed.
HA! Having to replace the transmission every 5 years makes that truck anything but great.
