if you have never seen a playboy based of this commercial you would think that it was a nice informal magazine on current events that you and your entire family would enjoy.

@Jeff98177 This tape was sent in by the director of a communications department at a University and was recorded for some sort of A/V project that clearly involved TV commercials. It's the only tape I've seen where for the most part ONLY commercials are recorded.

Also, I wonder why there was a separate 1-800 number for Georgia at the end of the Playboy commercial.

@skystarless The Excedrin packaging was to prevent in-store tampering after the wake of the Tylenol murders in 1982.

I remember that Playboy ad. That used to air regularly on USA. USA was able to air long ads during its programs (remember, Cigarrest?). The WWF (they had dropped the extra "W" a few years earlier) match shown briefly was Mac Rivera v Pete Doherty from MSG.

That Coke commercial reminds me of something. I remember seeing Coke machines when I was a kid, that would talk with Bill Cosby's voice in pre-recorded messages. Did those exist or was I just dreaming?

@madgang201 You know what? Having seeing it a second time, I now notice the music that accompanied that clip. It now makes the pinata look like a serial killer just waiting there to attack like something out of a Hitchcock film.

It looks like someone was changing the channel looking just for the commercials. Maybe he/she was thinking "In 28 years, this is going on UA-cam!"

    LOL, that jingle for ShoeTown!
And oh goodness, those kids have been deprived of their Jell-O pudding. That's just bad parenting.

I love that Excendrin came in a sealed canister.

@kerberos623 New Coke wasn't rolled out until 1985. 'Coke' started to be used as an alternate name/logo by the company in 1941.

That was some rough channel changing, but now I remember, that person was probably actually turning a knob, like we used to, lol

I think they should make a full length song out of that Shoe Town jingle.

I love how playboy is trying to sell their magazine without saying it's porn. "But honey I just read it for the articles!". sure. ,-)

According to the public access station(?) at 3:20 at least during one point of this taping it was done in Hartford Conn. on May 23, 20 minutes after 8 (pm I assume) on a Monday. Our Monday will be the 23rd too. Heh
There was also a 47% chance of rain, the High was 81, low 58. Dunno, just find this place & time snapshot stuff fascinating. I'm odd like that. Great upload.

6:31 That commercial goes as far back as the early to mid 1970s.

I miss how INSTANT channel changing was (at 03:15). It's such a slow process now with digital. Also I noticed the local cable access channel said 'MON MAY 23' so that places the flippin' in 1983? :)

What was up with that Donald Duck pinata and why was it just standing there doing nothing? Is that channel dedicated to it or something?

TAB guy was barking up the wrong tree. how embarrasing!
A Playboy ad on mainstream TV?
    I agree w/ you. Shoe-Town sounds aammaazziinngg
"Citation" is a dumb name for a car
Michelob might have beer porn, but "succulent Steak Diane" @ 6:19 is food porn
    Bill Cosby-American icon

@pika23 I really doubt he had anything to do with the Tylenol murders. Kaczynski's attacks were all specific targets...poisoning random people simply wasn't his MO. They're just going through the motions to eliminate him as a suspect. I'd be shocked if they ever found the perpetrator.

Joanie Love Chachi was so stupid, they were supposed to be living in the early 60s but it looked like the early 80s. They couldn't be bothered to make the sets look authentic. Also the scripts were dreadful.

@BanzaiM50 coca cola actually changed their taste formula based on a faulty test with testaudiances. But the new flavour of coke was a no go with people, heck they even had peoples movements to get the old coke formula back. And they prevailed, which is why they changed back and for a while it was "classic" on the cans.

@Koala5837 I noticed that in another one of the Vault's commercial montages, that one from 1980. Very odd.

My grandad is a Coca Cola diehard and stopped drinking it after they went to "Coke" for a while, until they reintroduced Coca Cola "Classic". Wasn't really old enough to know, but I assume there wasn't really a change and it was just publicity, but he seemed to care quite a bit. At least it wasn't Crystal Pepsi?

The shows I saw as they flipped through the channels
WWWF(extra w was eliminated like a year or two later when Vince officially took over)wrestling with Bob Backlund and Andre the Giant
Flip Wilson show with Flip as Geraldine(i think)
    Poseidon Adventure
    Square Pegs
Benson(it looked like the kitchen on Benson where the guy was leaning on a counter)

Referring to the Castrol commercial. 4 cylinder cars in the 70's and 80's were crap. My Dad had a 1984 Mazda Truck with a 4 cylinder, he used Castrol GTX in it for a while, and then changed oils, and when he did, that truck did everything BUT run, and when it stalled, it was impossible to get that thing started. And eventually threw the kitchen sink, if you know what I mean. (Motor Blew Up) back in '98. That truck can be decomposing in the junkyard for all I care.

Because Playboy is the first place we all turn for SPORTS COVERAGE, amirite?
    USFL on ESPN, sweet!
    Excedrin-in-a-can for the win!
    The Scorpions at 4:41!
I really wish he didn't cut out the ABC Monday Night Movie bumper -- great theme.
Channel and Rickel were THE home improvement warehouses in the Northeast, before they merged and went bankrupt in the late 90s.
Living in CT must have been nice, you'd get the Hartford stations AND the great New York networks!
