Not interested in stickers, but do have some questions for you. Would you consider doing a series of educational videos? Like welding 101, fabrication design, or anything similar? Who would be a dream collaborator or group of collaborators? Is there any location in the world you haven't been to that is a bucket list off-road destination? Thanks for sharing Ian. Your teaching roots shine through and outlets such as UA-cam allow you to reach more than you could in a classroom. It seems you're living the dream.
In my experience as a fabricator, everything Ian stated is 100% correct about anti-splatter spray and the gas selection in regards to splatter control. At times in commercial fabrication it would be easier and more efficient to use anti-splatter spray for a 10 min job vs resetting the weld setting and preping the metal which adds extra time to a job. Same with the weld table it is quicker to spray the table as opposed to grinding back the splatter before starting the next job. As a handy tip if you have no anti-splatter spray left you can get your oxy/acetylene and set it too that sooty flame then put a coat of soot over the job and/or table and it will stop the splatter from sticking.
Thanks for tackling my question on frame stiffeners. I've been researching that issue for two years. I can say with some certainty that your dialog on it is hands down the best content on the internet about it now!
East Tn here. I know that my LJ on 37s, breakover angles at 107 were great. Now on 40s I feel that I want to stretch it but I don't want to bottom out. 42-43s is the final goal and I feel that 113-116 is going to work great based on the guys Im riding with.
Just wanted to echo what a lot of folks seem have already said: thanks for the thoughtful answers to the questions you pick. Great info in digestible portions.
Absolutely love the series! I know what you can build because I’ve been watching you do it forever. I really enjoy the insight as to why that you share here.
It’s incredible to listen to the amount of knowledge you’ve got on welding and fabrication. It’s truly inspiring for somebody like me who’s “built” my first Jeep and is only a few years into off-roading and things that fit into that category. I do hope one day to get my hands on a project and be able to do a full revamp of it, and with your videos and knowledge I know it will help. Thanks!!
I just noticed the MJ engine is tucked in. I've been wracking brain trying to figure out how you stuffed it o low lol. Makes sense and now I'm jealous. Excited to see more progress when the season settles a bit.
Hey from Ottawa, Ian. When you lived up here full time, how much wheeling did you do in winter ? Are there any significant changes to make when building a 4 season rig ? Thx for sharing all that you've picked up over the years.
I have a where is it now question the green S10 you and Jesse Combs built I think you guys called it truggy that thing was absolutely wild I'd love to see that again
My question is a what would you do. I have a full running and driving 83 toyota 4x4 minus the rusted out frame and cab. I've been wheeling for years and want a budget build. Do i salvage yard a newer toyota truck or sami frame or wait and save up and tube chassis?
Awesome show.. thanks.. my question for you .. ROCK Lights ? Do not see you using on most of your builds; is there a reason that they are not on your rigs.
For someone who dismantles and parts out vehicles to fund projects what are some popular parts in the four wheel space that sell fast but don't drive up the price of a scrape truck? Ex what are axels that would sell versus axels that are too much work or not as common (aftermarket support) for someone to build with?
I eventually want to build a samurai based rig. My question… while planning out the engine, trans, x-fer case set up…. Where is a good place to look for help on what pieces fit with what, and what is a good set up? I wheel mostly here in TN, Alabama, and Ky, so I am going to want wheel speed at times but prefer crawling and technical stuff more.
Heres a q n a for ya next session....if i could find an old square body chevy crew cab body...maybe in mexico....what frame would that truck be able to be swapped onto?? Id like to build an old school off road truck maybe a 454...496 and 4l80 trans.thx tomk fdny
I am moving on from short arms and drop brackets on my MJ this winter (finally) for a customs 3 link. I am also exploring a 3 link with a track bar for the rear because I want to keep the factory gas tank. What are your thoughts on coils/shocks vs. coil overs vs. bypasses vs. ORIs?
Question: Used Jeeps like XJs, TJs, and YJs that used to be affordable have skyrocketed in price. What advice do you have for guys wanting to buy a relatively affordable rig for a project?
Hey ian im glad to finally found your channel. I was wondering if you could help me out. I have a 2006 ram 2500 4 door long box that's got a 160" wheelbase, i wanna turn it into a wheeling rig that i can take rock crawling anywhere in the country. I was wondering what size tires you would recommend and how high my ride height should be? For months ive been trying to get a solid answer on pirate4x4 but the only responses i get are shorten it or build something else. The problem is i use it a lot for firefighting drills to haul equipment up to the mountains. Our brush trucks have 40" tires and 25" of belly clearance with 168" wheelbase. They seem to do okay offroad but not ideal for rocks. Any info would be great, thanks!
What's the story with the your MJ, it looks like maybe 5.2 in the engine bay? I have a '96 XJ and have access to a 5.2 from a Grande with low hours. Is this a good swap and what about the electrical system and computer can they be made to work?
Always great info!! Airing Down? My wife and I wheel in a 4x4 van (Ford E-350). Heavy. My question is "airing down" based on weight of vehicle?? Any thoughts?
Ian, do you want to come up to Alaska and help me build a set of 60s to swap under my Roxor? I have everything to build them. 2 Eaton E lockers, new ring sets, 35 spline shafts for the rear. Just don't have the time to learn and get the work done.
I think you mean 116"? Because my supercab, long bed F250 is 158" and it's quite a bit longer than a 4 door JK. 158" is great for work, ok on desert South West trails (which are long and straight with few trees), terrible on any real rock trails.
Good discussion on wheelbase. How about we talk about doublers. Most people these days just send a bunch of money to Atlas, but I like building stuff. I have pretty much everything that I need to put one together.
Where is the Suburban Gorilla?? That thing was built and never seen again even on the show.Got to be one of the most memorable vehicles you built on that show.
On the Willy's wagon how much did you stretch the wheel base? I think original is 103.5. Just curious,. I have a 1956 Willy's wagon that has been responded some before I purchased it.
I want to mount two winch's on my big truck one in front and one in the rear. I am wanting 20K winch's, what winch do you recommend? My trucks too heavy for "real" off roading but I use it to pull out freinds when they get stuck but still want a winch that will still be able to pull me out if I do get stuck.
Weld Spatter - universally accepted and official name is "dingleberry", its in a dictionary somewhere (I think?). Anti-spatter spray and tip dip are invaluable on a large fab job! BTW, Lockjaw was my favorite build from the old show also.
I’m wondering about wheel diameter and width, what’s best for let’s say a 37x12.5. I’m wanting to do 15s on my Toyota but I’m also leaning towards 17s due to availability. Is there a big downside to larger wheels?
@@BigTireGarage I've lived in Arkansas my whole life and never been. Building a 2000 Oldsmobile Bravada 8" lift swapped in a manual shift 241 transfer case.
I bought a set of the newer bf Goodrich km3's for my square body Chevy 35x12.50r15 I haven't really got the chance to put a lot of miles on them yet though. But if you're daily driving it you might wanna go with a all terrain.

What was your biggest fabrication fail? That you didnt know until it was too late?
I 2nd this one 😁 we all learn from our failures
I 3rd this, I like hearing about the process people went through to get good at their craft
Oh that’s a good question
This one
Thanks for the in-depth tutorial on anti-spatter spray. The name comes from horseshoe art that Ive done using used rusty horseshoes.

What do you think about the Side by side world? Have you wheeled with many of them and how do they do compared to a full-size rig?

same thing for a stick welder will that anti splatter spray work? Preston
Great content. Is there a golden ratio for wheelbase, tire size and width? For example I a 4d JL on 40"s the same ratio as a Willys?
