To me as an average guy and heavy equipment mechanic i could relate to Colt a lot. He worked out of a home garage, outside in the weather, explained why and how he did everything, and you could tell he was down to earth.
I completely enjoyed this series and I am a fan of all three competitor groups. Colt was the only one who built a vehicle that could do well on UA. Nate built a very cool overlander vehicle with not enough ground clearance, and Rudy built an excellent all around trail / overland rig which was too large for narrow rock crawling trails. Colt really wanted this and it was clear he put heart and soul into this build to win it. I believe that S10 will do very well on UA. It can handle just about anything you throw at it. Well done!
Great series and all competitors were a lot fun to watch. Next year maybe the competitors can all be given the same build vehicle to start and let them develop each into their own creation?
I voted almost everyday for bleeping jeep. They followed the rules and made a sweet S-10. Great challenges and preformed well, know I can't wait to see how they do on Ultimate Adventure 2023.
At the end of the day Nate has already been on UA, Dave will be there either way as an old cronie. Fred Williams was actually campaigning to not vote for Nate and Dave because of this. Im glad that Colt and Matt made the final cut. Nate started with Bleeping Jeep years ago, but theyre just good ol boys working out of their garages. It shows folks that you can build a rig in your garage to go on amazing off-road adventures.
As someone who remembers the early U.A.s before U-tube. This was interesting, but I'm jaded. All of them built great rigs. I knew Rudy's was over the top on the budget and figured many would be playing loose with it, too. I'm glad to see new blood involved joining. Cole is a under dog entry and deserves it starting with an S10. His project truck can possibly keep it real, showing you don't need a mega bucks build to enjoy it.
cool wrap-up / explanation video. i thought right from the beginning that rudy just wanted to build something cool and could care less about UA. Colt built a perfect rig for it. big tires, big axles, leaf springs and storage space.
I saw similar comments regarding next year, I think all competitors should start with the same vehicle or as close as possible. Each team are great fabricators. But if they all start with the same vehicle it would be interesting to watch them build in their own unique way.
Was an awesome series not going to lie! Look forward to more of these. Cool to see how 3 different groups had 3 wildly different approaches to the same channel.
It was also great to hear your insight about the price range/how the costs were tabulated for what it takes to “build” a custom offroad rigs like we saw in these videos.
I felt everyone of the budgets were about as fair as you could possibly make. In all reality they had more money into each rig than what was settled for final budget, but the way you set up the negotiations throughout the team members is exactly how this competition should have been handled, boots on the ground so to speak with each competitor with skin in the game deciding how everything should be priced. Great stuff OnX and Ian! Excited for next season!
Rudy took on a HARD build. Mopars are not cheap. Cars or trucks. The S10 love it. Good example of what u can do with a gm. Next year try something like a Tahoe SUV type build. Great series.
I didn’t watch every single episode but I watched a whole bunch of them and I’d say it was all fair and it was all fun for us watching. I’m glad it all happened and I look forward to more!
I enjoyed watching this series across all the channels! It is interesting that two of the teams started with cheap vehicles and spent a lot building them and one team started with a higher priced rig and did minimal work. Maybe a twist for next year would be to assign an overall budget but break that down into a vehicle cost and build cost. Have one team with a low buy and high build budget, one with an even split, and one with a high buy and low build budget. Start the series off by having the teams randomly draw to see which category they get.
Congratulations on producing such an interesting competition. This demonstrated the talent and effort required to get a rig race ready! Of course they were going to attempt to play fast and loose with the rules. It remained a friendly competition among friends. It all works to help promote the sport. Thanks for your behind the scenes perspective and unbiased presentation. They all worked hard and made good showings for their efforts.
You could tell right away which rig was going to do the best for actual tough wheeling. I was initially blown away that someone would pick a "full size" vehicle for this competition.
I thought the challenges were ridiculous, AND I LOVED THEM!!! It was supposed to be fun and it was. Reminded me of my days in boy scouts. Had you do a activity to show your knowledge and ability to work as a team. Please keep it light hearted next time with the challenges. The riggs are very serious the games don't have to be. I would also like to see maybe a wild card of some kind next time. Like a school or group of kids that get a bigger budget but have less experience.
im going to start with saying great job to everyone I watched ever sec.. next year I hope its done again.. good challenge for next year changing a tire blind folded.. great job to you and your team Ian
Great job with this competition. All of the competitors were great to watch and very entertaining. Everyone’s build was unique and very capable. Great job Ian
Thanks for the run down. Next Year’s OnX Build Challenge. Rocklander Builds on Trans American Trail Run. Virginia to Washington State, across Tellico, Badlands, Colorado, Utah, Nevada, California. Or a Pacific Rim Run. From CA/MX border to Canada.
Ok, I loved the concept and I loved the end product. Next year, build budget same. Contestants have to buy a shopping cart,a Mazda 2 Toyota Corolla a small front wheel drive hatch and turn it into a UA capable unit. Initial Contestants should be chosen by UA-cam audience. So maybe not the same three from 2023 teams. Once the Moab rim part of the challenge is complete these contestants will be reduced to the Three who get to build. I could go on but having 5-6 contenders at the first challenge would push it to the next level, with possible relegation at the first day.
The series was great. I enjoyed it all. While I know the people who have great UA-cam channels bring extra viewership with them, I would like to see possibly another team or two who might be unknown people who are up for a good challenge. Their builds could still be documented on UA-cam. It would be like the readers rides they have done in the past, but they would have to build a vehicle to compete under the same time line and budget constrains. Again, nice job, and I look forward to whatever you come up with for next year.
I would add doing a tire change in a trail situation that they would run into in like a rock field, where they cannot move the vehicle to a flat surface. That would represent a real world situation that could happen while on UA. Great series all around. I would have liked to see more challenges and a few more videos covering the builds and challenges.
I subscribe and follow all three of the competitors and enjoy the heck out of all of them . Love how meticulous Nate is , Love how happy & easy going Rudy and I Love Bleepin Colt’s getter done attitude !!! Made for a good watch !!!
Great competition and all the builds! As for a new competition in my opinion it would be awesome to see a competition that was a little more strict, for instance set a limit on the year of the truck/SUV and have it be all brand new parts and accessories. Nothing used or already owned. Another thing that would be great would be to let people vote that don't have a subscription! That was a very limited factor in the last competition. And lastly have a specific tire size every competitor can't go over! Say no larger than 37s so the obstacles are equally challenging for all competitors. Thank you everyone that was involved in the last competition it was very entertaining and I hope to see another!
I have been thinking of next year, and I think that the vehicles should be sourced for them to eliminate a competitor from receiving a head start on a "discounted" vehicle. I agree that oddball vehicles should be used such as minivans, coupes or sedans that can be put on a frame. Give them all a 1989 Dodge Caravan with the fake wood panel on the side. Also, more teams! Five or six would be great. I know that the sponsors want audience participation, but scale down the points from audience to avoid unfair popularity contests yet still reward popular builds. Have each competitor give required points to the other teams. To avoid UA having to deal with a poor result, have the performance of the vehicle skew higher compared to other things such as votes or competitions. Loved this and want to see it get better every year. Great jobs by everyone involved.
I enjoyed the series, and the videos by the competitors. Good rules in general. I think it is odd that someone can make a good buy on let's say facebook marketplace, and then that good buy is erased, because the competitors found it for more. If someone makes a legitimate buy on ebay or facebook marketplace, craig's list, etc., that shouldn't be erased. The right team won, so there is that. The S10 was the most capable and the least expensive. I was blown away that relatively experienced off-roaders chose vehicles where the body was the same width as the tires. This is an obvious recipe for body damage, which both rigs got. Maybe that works in the sand or the snow, but not on tough trails. You and your team did a great job capturing the events. Another rule to entertain. Every dollar under the budget is a vote. Every dollar over the budget is a subtracted vote. Rudy didn't take the budget seriously, because ultimately there was no penalty for going over.
I would like to see a video where you or a group of UA regulars evaluate the rigs and what you'd do differently based on your past experience. For the next challenge of like to see the teams all build the same base vehicle to see what each team prioritizes. And it needs to be something unusual or different.
Hey, Ian. A thought that I had about the future of these OnX challenges is that it would be that it would be pretty neat to have a well known builder or channel team up with somebody that isn’t well known and have them work together to complete a rig or project that has been started, but hasn’t been finished. The end goal obviously of trying to get into UA. Like, for instance, I have a International Scout II that would be at home on UA once it’s done, but I don’t think that I would ever get the opportunity to go under normal circumstances. It might be a good way for someone who wouldn’t normally go to have a better chance and showcase some talented builders who no one would know otherwise.
Great job everyone ! Enjoyed watching each build and how they did . Now make a mini rock crawler from a front wheel drive moter/trans ,two axles and suspension, tubing ,two seater , and wheels .
The series was great to watch the different builds take place. Maybe throw a 4th team in or have the 3rd not be as well known but has the potential to show case what they do for future build series.
First of all, well done Ian, as clearly you and crew have put a lot of thought into this and relateable to someone flagging dwindling wages in a shop! Though, the format is close, and vehicle builds spectacular; very generally think you are close, but slightly off. Since full disclosure posits $$$ is the arterial blood in said projects, set a buy-in @ 35 large and have all start from scratch, w/ build monitored in similar fashion. Remember Pederen's Mag days, it was 'built-not-bought'; though, any struggler knows these rear-steer crawlers are more like 120 large!
The Ram Charger was my favorite, definitely expensive, all of the competitors did well... hope Rudy gets the Ramcharger's rear quarters back to looking good.
Appreciate the break downs. Was disappointed to hear both Nate and Rudy take some subtle shots at the challenge in their follow up videos. Bleepin Colt earned, and deserved the win!
I first want to say Great Job Ian, ON-X, and especially the film crew. I can only imagine how tough it was filming while walking/climbing up those trails multiple times to film each vehicle. The On-X off road challenge was very entertaining to watch. You could see pretty early on how much experience each team had building custom vehicles was a huge factor of staying on budget, or Not. Rudy struggled a little with this part of the challenge. I do wonder if the cost of the Ram charger would have been any different if Holly had been a part of the build the entire time? (Not that we don’t ALL go over budget on every build. 😂) The last trail was a little more brutal than those 3 Rigs were built for, in my opinion. I do understand, it was a “TV” show at the end of the day and anytime you’re out 4-wheelin you better expect that some damage is going to happen. If you can’t accept that you best head back to the pavement.
First off…I enjoyed the series immensely from all 3 competitors and watch videos from them often. They each are different in their approach but all have great fab skills. Your involvement was serious but fun in just the right amount. I think all 3 teams should have ended up goin but that wasn’t the agreement. On a side note UA was in my area this past week but I didn’t get to go watch if that would’ve even been allowed.
With Colt doing an all leaf build, it made me think that a certain period build off would be cool. Competitors would have to stick to how people built rigs in the 80s and so on.
Click on video, watch two ads. Video starts with a sales pitch so try to skip forward, get two more ads… finally get to 3:00 min in and the video actually starts
Now being from SoCal with a lot of Toyota fans as friends, this was by far the most interesting build for the use of stock parts. I’d say the vehicle is something most people could build in the garage minus the body work. Cut fender wells and front grill for more clearance is not a skill level the average home builder has.
My only complaint about the whole show was the way you had to sign up for OnX, not financially but close, to vote. I voted one time because I was not going to sign up for a service I can't afford and don't need. I am too old, too poor and I don't own a vehicle I can tear up to go off roading. I used to, but it was much more an adventure then. No cell phones, no off road maps. Just topographical maps, a compass, a cb radio and acquired knowledge. Much safer now with GMRS. satellite phones and cell phones.
I agree , then it turns out OnX website votes apparently didn’t matter anyway. Looks like viewer votes were only to gain website traffic which turns into a financial gain for OnX .
Living behind enemy lines to all things automotive related in California, I think it would be interesting to see a rule for next year that they have to start with a 1975 or earlier vehicle. I think it would force a lot of creativity as to what platform is chosen. Anyway, fun series!
The bleeping build was my favorite, the s-10 vehicles don’t get much respect from the off-road community. Where as jeeps and Toyota’s are more the in thing. Of course most of the s10 build could be done in someone’s garage like colt if you have the build knowledge and skills.
I think the whole series was great and each builder did a really good job. Colt earned the win, can’t complain with how he did/what he built besides the obvious “bleepinjeep” not building a bleepinjeep! Nate did the opposite of your mistake by bringing an overlander to a buggy course (I believe you mentioned in a video about a UA where you brought a race Jeep on a overland trip). Rudy and Janelle stepped up big time and built damn near a race truck on a light beer budget. (Is that kid really only 23 building rigs like that?!?!) missed Holly big time. If you are free next August Ian, my club would love to host you out in Cali for Sierra Trek on Fordyce Trail.
What I would do to ensure a little more fairness in the competition is give everyone the same vehicle and give them the same budget. I feel like the price range went different ways bc of the vehicle they each chose and prices aren’t always the same for everything.
Ian, Great shows, all the competitions and your show; excellent to present what the relevant costs were to build. Still Voting for Rudy and the RadCharger.. Great Rig. Waiting with anticipation for the UA 2023 videos. BTW.. how about a Sticker pack?
I say for next time doing this challenge make a cheap truck challenge style but you only can use parts that are not new ,junkyards stuff , Facebook market place purchases etc.
Hi Ian. Big fan of yours ever since Extreme (280 lbs). I was in the Army when they were phasing out the gama goat m561 in the 80s. The S10 build of Colt and Matt brought back an idea that has gone through my head for a few decades and I'd love to hear your input. An off-road truck that rotates between the cab and the bed. Use some type of embedded rotating rings similar to a gun turret that the driveshaft passes through the center of a carrier bearing or maybe the t-case is mounted in the rings. It would give an unlimited amount of articulation. It would probably be a one trick pony where articulation is a must such as low speed rock crawling, but would definitely be unique. Thoughts?
Their mechanic is part of Lite Brite at this point. So technically could be Kevin and Chris as a team, and they would be fine. If it was Brittany and Kevin, no, I wouldn’t think they would be capable.
As with most people we go back and make repairs, improvements or simply changes. Bring back the same competitors with a new budget and same vehicle. However the problem with that is all three are already making changes. Maybe three new teams but have them all start with 3 of the same vehicles (that Ian provides) or very similar. Maybe Ian can start collecting them now.
Need to have a mapping challenge. Idk how you would do it other then a team would have to map a trail then the rest of the teams have to do that trail. Now gotta figure out what rigs your building or what area you teams would map a trail in. But something to think about. 😂
So luckily my team I was voting for won. Just an fyi I have had 2 accounts on onX and have not been able to vote. They refunded me for my first account. I don’t know if anyone else had this issue. However I was pretty disgusted at the time. So happy bleepin jeep won in the end.
It was awesome to see all the builds for the challenge but all 3 teams should have been invited to UA instead of a competition. It would have been great to see how all of these $15k builds performed on the UA.
More teams... like 6 teams... logistics nightmare I'm sure... Must be willing to sell the rig to random Viewer for 15k.... lots of fun watching so far..
Have them build the same platform, Something popular but cheap for beginners, xj, wrangler maybe 4Runner. All get identical or really close to identical ones, vehicle price not included in the budget. Or just do same challenge as this one, thought it was good challenge and voting and competition stuff always gets people upset, I don’t really care just like to see the builds but I understand the reasoning behind it.
I would have liked to see more offroad/vehicle challenges rather than silly games. I wouldnt consider a camp set-up race, or the "one hand tied up" challenge really being related to UA. I think things like winching/self recovery of your vehicle up an obstacle with the engine off (engine died/blew up) changing a flat tire while on an obstacle (debead/ripped sidewall), maybe points for how easily it is to source/replace a certain failed engine or drivetrain component. Things that actually are real world challenges while on UA.
I'm a Cub scout leader, and the challenges of setting up camp in the dark are real. I actually use setting up camp in the day vs camp set up at night as a valuable learning experience. Heck, do it in the rain!
@@BigTireGarage I agree setting up camp at night or in the rain isn't fun, I've done both, and both together lol. But I don't think that's a good representation of a "who deserves to win the spot of going on UA" type of skill. The other things I mentioned are more make it or break it type challenges. In my experience with wheeling trips, camp set up is an inconvenience, not a challenge.
Ian, can I ask you a question that has nothing to do with this video? I had a crazy thought, I have an 84 K2500 longbed chevy that needs some love. In an effort to do something different I am toying with the idea of lowering the motor and moving it back. I realize it will take a ton of fab, my question is will the juice be worth the squeeze? It is destined to be a car show queen and occasional off roading rig. Bigblock and t400, 14 bolt with dana 60 up front.
Absolutely loved the series! I thought the $15,000 budget was a little low. I think that the participants should have had to produce receipts for what they spent on whatever parts they bought. For example, call said he bought a set of used springs for $150, but the group assessed him a higher value on those parts. If you could have produced a receipt that would’ve ended that argument. I would like to see all participants produce receipts for the actual purchases. For the next onyx, off-road adventure, I would like to see you guys go to New England. I know finding places to go for wheeling there is difficult, but not impossible. We always see Utah, Colorado, Arizona, Nevada, California, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and so on. How about New England or New York State?
Maybe not these particular rules, but I would like to have seen some nascar-ish type limiting rules instead of such a tight budget. Something like, tires 37s or less. No Coil overs. Again, maybe not those particular rules, but you can see how limits on tire size and suspension type would force the budget lower all by themselves. Just an idea.
Ok Ian now its round 2 so maybe they can build a engine and to not exceed 400 cubic inchs no superchargers and no blowers. If you plan to run a Carburetor you can only run 1 Carburetor if you plan to run fuel injection 1 injectier per cylinder if you plan to run on Throttle body injection. Oh the engines can't be over 400hp
I actually tried to vote several times . Couldn't seem to navigate the onyx site . Then started seeing others with the same issues . Apparently onyx isn't that good
Love the challenger and challenges, but damn that last challenge killed the ram charger body and hp killed the rear axle. The ram was the best looking and had most people votes with the overall build. Lots of thought and planning. Too bad holly was not able to help with the build, glad to see Rudy’s gf step in to help.
One rule I like is if you’re caught cheating a price, such as “used leaf springs” that are new, you’re charged 2x the actual price. Your tires are “used” for $500 are actually new, 2x actual price. Can also be done for just putting wrong prices. Like if you put a price more than 50% lower than actual maybe actual price + the price they put. More incentive for people to be truthful.
The real challenge is a UA vehicle for under $15k, no exceptions for breaking the budget. Not in this economy and it doesnt matter how much of the work you do yourself. Only way I can see is if you buy an already built rig for a steal.
Maybe next year, keep the “Budget” build theme but make it where they ONLY get to use the Elite Partners for the build parts. Also, maybe don’t do teams. Seems like the “teams” part fell apart for a couple of them. Also, not count the cost of the rig but it cant cost more than a certain amount ($5000.00 or so). So someone doesn’t go and buy a straight up rock crawler buggy or something.
Personally, i would like to see realistic costs to build all 3 different rigs. ie: labor rates, custom part fab, et. Very few beginning builders have access to the tools and equipment that any of these guys / gals have.
I own half the tools I have because I built it in the garage, and every one of the competitors started the same way. Half the fun of these builds is figuring it out in the garage with your labor.
did not add shop rate time for installing that stuff, their all over budget. guys around that own shops in town near me run $150cad/hr for some things i can do in 20 minuets on the acreage... took a full 7 days to put a modified AAM in my car fully replacing the ford 7.5 CV axles that keep bending making very bad road vibration. shop time $25'000cad just for putting an axle in it. consolidate engineering papers = monthly bill of 2700 and 17 months pass still not finalized, then its a $25'000 shop bill added. new one with the... is too same $. one dollar willy with the half slice baloney sandwich finds mustard on it... adds cost of new AAM, 100k for a $300 salvage service truck axle cleaned up with new paint on it "just because they had money" then their aren't any around. city inspectors and work permits make it so...

Super fun to watch..well done..I’m glad nobody built a Jeep..it was refreshing to see less common rigs
I think you are very professional and keeping to your guns helped pull this together quite well.

He was penalized votes for going over...I think he got hit with almost 3000 votes subtracted
I would like to see a video where you or a group of UA regulars evaluate the rigs and what you'd do differently based on your past experience.
For the next challenge of like to see the teams all build the same base vehicle to see what each team prioritizes. And it needs to be something unusual or different.
Really appreciate this vid. Interesting to see the vast difference in "cost" of each rig, and how low Bleepin was able to keep their build
Cool follow up to the series! Looking forward to the next series! $50,000 4 wheel steer w.e. Rock rigs would be cool.
Very fun series. We loved watching the series and everyone's build videos.
I loved this!!!! Thank you for doing this work. It was incredibly well done.
That was one of the reasons that I made this video.....
The last trail was a little more brutal than those 3 Rigs were built for, in my opinion.
This challenge is at its learning to walk stage…yet I see good things coming….Trail and rig type is important
Thank you for all your efforts. Great job - the series turned out great!
Such a amazing series much love and respect 🙏 keep up the hard work
What I would do to ensure a little more fairness in the competition is give everyone the same vehicle and give them the same budget.
Thoughts?
Is Lite Brite even capable of doing such a build? All i ever see from them is their mechanic doing all the major work.
They dont build anything themselves. Just drive it like Holley
The challenges were perfect 👌👌
Next year have the challengers do the other's front axle during the built portion of the competition.
Fred was right, the Rad Charger was to big. Well done.
Those windows are lucky to still be in that truck
Need to have a mapping challenge. Idk how you would do it other then a team would have to map a trail then the rest of the teams have to do that trail. Now gotta figure out what rigs your building or what area you teams would map a trail in. But something to think about. 😂
I think it would be interesting if the competitors had the same vehicle to build supplied to them. Then do the 15k budget.
Hair-dood, that key ring is a copy of the Keybar.
So luckily my team I was voting for won. Just an fyi I have had 2 accounts on onX and have not been able to vote. They refunded me for my first account. I don’t know if anyone else had this issue. However I was pretty disgusted at the time.
So happy bleepin jeep won in the end.
Didn't vote but I'm glade colt won. he had the best budget build that the average joe can build.
Cool KeyCase 💯
When does Colt and Matt go to UA? I'm just wondering when we can expect to start seeing videos of the event?
It was awesome to see all the builds for the challenge but all 3 teams should have been invited to UA instead of a competition. It would have been great to see how all of these $15k builds performed on the UA.
Hey M8! good to see you on!! ... can you please put on CC ( Closed Captioning)> thanks!!!!
It takes time to populate...I am sure I allow it
More teams... like 6 teams... logistics nightmare I'm sure...
Must be willing to sell the rig to random Viewer for 15k....
lots of fun watching so far..
Next year, give all the competitors the same vehicle. A VW van, or old NY Taxi. Something you wouldn't expect to see as a rock crawls
Hey Ian are you still doing the video Q&A sessions? I’ve got some questions for you I’d like to see answered!
Rear axleshaft change. Grade safety, time, cleanliness/environmental considerations
If you don't rhink setting up camp in the dark is a relatable xhallenge, you have not been on UA...to make it more UA like it should of been raining
I don't think it will be worth it TBH
I like that idea....but I also like to see what everyone creates
@@BigTireGarageright, you'd have to be careful to not inadvertently cause all 3 teams to build the "same" rig.
The teams using stock motors were definitely had reliability in there court, proved high hp isn’t a needed.
Yay Ramcharger!
Winching challenge sounds like a good idea for UA.
That was why we added it
@@BigTireGarage I guess I missed that video. Well I guess I’m going to have to watch them again.
HE'S BACK!! JK I do miss your coffee break style videos tho 👍🏻
Witch one of the 3 would you prefer to build?
Im still mad i never got to see the 6x6 apocalypse rig done
Awesome video
Thanks!
Next year - SUPPORT TRAILER with a $2500 budget
I actually tried to vote several times . Couldn't seem to navigate the onyx site . Then started seeing others with the same issues . Apparently onyx isn't that good
Love the challenger and challenges, but damn that last challenge killed the ram charger body and hp killed the rear axle. The ram was the best looking and had most people votes with the overall build. Lots of thought and planning. Too bad holly was not able to help with the build, glad to see Rudy’s gf step in to help.
Team Bleepin had more votes without the challenges when voting was closed
One rule I like is if you’re caught cheating a price, such as “used leaf springs” that are new, you’re charged 2x the actual price. Your tires are “used” for $500 are actually new, 2x actual price. Can also be done for just putting wrong prices. Like if you put a price more than 50% lower than actual maybe actual price + the price they put.
More incentive for people to be truthful.
That Matrix glitch at 16:40 😅
The real challenge is a UA vehicle for under $15k, no exceptions for breaking the budget. Not in this economy and it doesnt matter how much of the work you do yourself. Only way I can see is if you buy an already built rig for a steal.
I really liked the Lexus, you should have done easier trails so it could keep up. This was buggy stuff and Colt is too good of driver, not fair.
UA won't give them "easier" trails
